The Boneknapper Family (plus 1)

Summary:

Danny gets flung through a Ghost Zone portal by his sister's terrible driving.

He didn't expect to come across an interesting family, or for them to (essentially) adopt him.

•••

Hiccup, Gobber, and the others were visiting the Boneknappers again, hoping to see the latest batch of eggs hatch.

They didn't expect to see a random teen casually sleeping on one of the female's backs.

Notes:

This is late.
Its Feb 2 and this is an honorary mention crossover meant for Jan 30 ^^;;
This just took awhile to write, and it doesnt help that I started writing the day before it was due oof
And I still got the DC crossover from day 27 to post after this, THAT one shot ended up being so long that I went over the day and I just gave up lol. So after this, I'm gonna finish that one hopefully in the next few days
Bit of context for this, Danny is 17, I think was what I put him as. He was crowned Ghost King a few months after he turned 16 when his core matured, and PP hasn't happened, and the animosity between Amity and ghosts is ongoing. I didn't give him a specific suit in this story so you guys can feel free to search random fanart and pick out the coolest one you like and just go with it lol. I might add art to this eventually, but that depends on whether I can actually figure ao3 out enough to post art or I'll just be stuck with adding a link. Only time will tell
Hiccup is 16, the events of the first movie and the first season of Riders Of Berk has for sure happened. I'd suggest watching episode 13 to understand Hiccup and his electrical scar. Other than that, about half of the 2nd season, Defenders Of Berk, has happened. Time is a really weird thing in these seasons and hard to keep track of so I assume that it's been over a year. Don't ask me for the other's ages cuz idk, idek how old they are in the movie unless they were all 15 at the time
Boneknapper family consists of these:
Eldest female: first egg batch that Hiccup and co werent around for, she had 3 eggs but only 2 hatched, currently in the Short Wing stage
Youngest female: 2nd egg batch that Hiccup and co WERE around for, she had a single egg and it hatched, currently in the Tiny Teeth stage
Middle female: last and current egg batch that the others are visiting for, 3 eggs and all 3 hatched
4th female: idk she gone, I didnt rewatch the Boneknapper legend before this so I made a guess and thought there were only 3 females. Maybe she didn't want to stick around or something
Also, real quick for Danny, he doesnt speak Norse normally. But since hes the King, he needs to be able to cater to all his subjects no matter where they come from. This means he has all knowledge of every dead and Zone-made-up language there is, and with living languages, all he has to do is listen to a few sentences before it starts to click into place. That's how he is casually speaking with the riders without a problem

Chapter 1: New World and New... Family?

Chapter Text

Ugh... That's the last time I'll ever let Jazz fly the Specter Speeder...

Groaning, the teen halfa slowly sat up and warily opened his eyes. Looking around the very bright area, he noticed an awful lot of trees, cold, clean air, and an overwhelmingly rocky terrain interspaced with dirt and extra plants.

Taking the moment to look at his surroundings and get his eyes adjusted to the bright sun shining above, Danny slowly started to get to his feet, using a nearby tree to help him stand when the strength in his body nearly gave out. If I'm this exhausted from being flung into a Ghost Zone portal, I doubt I'd be able to actually go ghost. Guess I'll have to do things the old fashioned way to find a way home for the time being. There doesn't even seem to be any ectoplasm around these parts - it's a miracle that a portal opened here in the first place.

Spotting a high rocky platform straight ahead beyond the tall trees, the halfa quickly debated about it, I can probably use a bit of my flight to negate gravity just enough to make it easier for me to climb that... I need to get to higher ground in order to determine where I am. Oh man, I can already hear Jazz praising me for thinking through my situation... Taking a few tentative, shaky steps, Danny quickly got a handle on his leg strength and soon started to head towards the elevated rock platform.

Once he reached the bottom of the rocks, Danny looked up to determine how hard the climb would be. Well, it shouldn't be too difficult to get to the top following my earlier thought of using a bit of flight. I don't think it'll take too long either, as long as I'm careful.

The halfa activated his flight in a small dose and grabbed the first rock to start his climb. About halfway up and a few minutes into the climb, Danny felt his already low energy reserve start to plummet, so he picked up the pace the best he could. He had to take a few breathers every minute or so, in hopes of regaining just that little bit of energy before he had to continue.

Finally reaching the top of the platform feeling incredibly drained of energy, Danny threw his arm over the ledge to anchor and hoist himself up. He was panting heavily as he dragged his top half over the side, taking a quick breather before he began on bringing over his legs. He looked up from where he was finally over the ledge, and froze at what he saw in front of him.

"What the..."

•••

It has been about a week since the group had last visited Gobber's Boneknapper friend and his females.

When they last went, they all saw that he and one of his females had yet another batch of eggs that were ready to hatch. The Boneknapper has had two previous nestings, and this will be the third nest he has the honor of becoming a father over. Hiccup, Gobber, and the others have had the privilege of being around when the babies hatched in the last nesting by complete accident, but now had the time to prepare and be there early.

Everyone already had permission from their parents and Chief Stoick to stay a few days on the Boneknappers' island to witness the hatching. And Hiccup couldn't wait to see new dragon life be born yet again to such an interesting and amazing species. They were all already on their way to the island, riding on dragon back, with Gobber accompanying Snotlout on Hookfang.

"Ooohhh, I can't wait to see those baby dragons be hatched! We were so lucky to witness the hatching last time! I still can't believe that he trusted us enough to let us see and meet his babies!" Fishlegs gushed about happily from on top of a positively buzzing Meatlug. Both human and dragon were filled with overwhelming anticipation of seeing the new babies.

Hiccup just chuckled lightly and shook his head, unable to curve the other boy's excitement due to his own being the same. He looked ahead to keep eyes out for the island where the Boneknappers will be.

"Fishlegs, I get you're excited, we all are, but for the love of Thor, please be quiet." Astrid hollered back at the rounder boy. Stormfly let out a squawk, eagerly agreeing with her human partner.

"Hey guys, I see the island!" Hiccup calls out from the front of the pack. "Let's maybe continue our excitement once we actually reach the island and see the Boneknappers, shall we?" A couple chuckles and affirmatives later, and they flew the last few minutes to the island.

The group quickly landed on the rocky ground and started to look around. "I believe that the Boneknappers were up there, up on that small cliff." Gobber pointed out as he raised his remaining hand to the rocky platform in the middle of the trees.

"Alright, can't hurt to check. Come on, bud. One last small flight and we'll be seeing some new baby dragons!" Toothless garbled, excited about the prospect of knowing even more baby dragons.

All the dragons and their riders took to the air one last time, heading for the top of the large platform. They saw the Boneknappers in the distance when they leveled off above the treeline, and flew in their direction.

"Is it just me or is there something strange along with the dragons?" Ruffnut called out as she leaned forward on Barf's head, her half of the twins' shared dragon.

Her other half also looked ahead on Belch, the other dragon head. "I don't see it. Oh wait, I see it! Or do I? Are we looking at the same thing?" Tuffnut turned to look at his female counterpart, only to receive a punch to his shoulder. "Ow!"

The twins' bickering caused them all to take a closer look at the group of dragons. But soon enough, before anyone can confirm that something was off within the bone covered dragons, the dragon riders landed on the wide platform. They were all near the Boneknappers, but with a decent space between both dragon groups to ensure no one felt uncomfortable.

Everyone quickly dismounted their dragons and they all approached the Boneknappers on foot.

"I hope we haven't missed the hatching!" Gobber hobbled out in front of the others to approach his pal, the male Boneknapper rushed forward with a gentle roar, meeting his human friend halfway and happily nuzzling his boney snout all over Gobber, who in turn scratched his hook of a hand against the dragon's jaw.

Hiccup, the others, and their dragons smiled at the exchange and approached the two mismatched friends. While the group greeted the mysterious dragon, Hiccup looked over to the females watching them curiously, the three older babies playing together, and the nest of eggs sitting innocently within the mothers' protective circle.

Looking around, the dragon trainer tried to pinpoint what the twins were going on about. He approached one of the females, raising his hand with a friendly smile. He grinned brighter when the mother reacted without hesitation to bump her nose into his palm. "Hey, there. Do you happen to have something new with you? Something, oh I don't know, we haven't seen the last time we visited?"

The female Boneknapper tilted her head at his question, but seemed to understand as she turned her head back around to look at the youngest female, who, until this moment, was mostly blocked from Hiccup's sight by the other two females that stood at the front.

Glancing over the young mother, Hiccup noted that she was simply laying down as she watched the dragon pups play around. But the thing that made him do a double take, was the fact that there was a human teenager casually lounging across her boney back, seemingly asleep.

"Wh-what..? Wait, how... How is there-?" Hiccup fumbled with his words as he tried to process the information his eyes are currently feeding to his brain. Toothless was in much the same predicament, his eyes wide and ears perked up. He tilted his head a bit to talk over his shoulder but not removing his eyes from what he was looking at, "Hey, uh.. Guys? I think you might want to see this..? I think I need a second opinion on whether I'm going crazy or not..."

That got the others' attention as they all turned to their young leader staring off to something they can't see. They all start to walk towards him, questions going on inside their heads.

"Was that supposed to be a question, or a statement?" Astrid questioned as she stood next to Hiccup and Toothless, referring to his inquiry of the others wanting to see something.

"Uhh, both?" He responded as the others got comfortable around him. He raised a hand to point to the young female, making the group look over. It only took a moment before every human and dragon (except the Boneknapper family, of course) appeared to take on the same expression as the dynamic duo's.

The boy, and it did indeed seem like it was a boy on top of the wild Boneknapper, decided to wake up in that moment, grumbling incoherently as he blinked against the sun in his eyes and turning onto his other side, away from the trainers. It took the teen a moment, but he began to sit up and slide down the Boneknapper's back, the female looking at him almost lovingly. He slouched almost immediately once his feet hit the floor - his back to the group - only standing up straight when he moves to stretch his back. The resulting loud crackles and pops that came out causing humans and dragons alike to cringe at the sound.

Finally turning around to face the group, the teen froze in his tracks once he saw the sudden newcomers. Hiccup noticed that the teen was older and taller than anyone in his group, his body lean but filled out generously with muscles, with striking glacial ice blue eyes that looked sharper than any dragon's claws or teeth could ever hope to be, messy, night black hair that hung in front of his face but was cut short at the back, along with a few odd scars lightly scattering his face in different sizes and lengths. Glancing at his gaping mouth showed sharper and slightly longer than normal canines. His clothes confused him though, as they were way too light for the cold weather to be safe, and were like nothing he had ever seen before - he hasn't seen anything remotely similar on even Trader Johann's ship. They were of a strange material, with a nearly all white shirt with black highlights, some interesting looking dark blue pants, and shoes that seemed like it was made with something similar to leather.

The older teen just seemed so colorful in comparison to anything they've ever seen before, that it takes the group a moment to register that it was indeed real. It was enough of a break though, for the strange teen to regain his bearings.

Uttering something in a foreign language that sounded like it shouldn't be possible coming from human vocal chords, the teen called out to someone. Before the group could figure who that someone is, all the Boneknappers looked right to the black haired teen who was looking at the humans with distrust. He called out again and the babies looked between him and Hiccup's group before they all rushed to the other teen.

Said teen moved to the front of the little ones, creating a barrier between them and the group of dragon trainers. The females all looked conflicted, unsure whether to view the group as a threat the same as the newcomer does, but still end up moving closer to the teen and their children.

Before the group could do anything in their dumbfounded state to try and appease the older teen, Gobber's male Boneknapper friend stepped forward and gave out a mighty roar. Removing their hands from covering their ears, the teens and Gobber watch as the dragon admonished his mates and the teen, all of whom looked very scolded and regretful.

"What just happened...?" A few members of the group, Hiccup included, voiced out quietly in a feeling of overbearing confusion at the situation.

•••

After that whole, strange ordeal, the older teen had come around to the group of teens, dragons, and Gobber. Albeit, reluctantly so.

Toothless, Meatlug, and Stormfly went to play with the three babies, while Barf, Belch, and Hookfang all rested nearby, soaking in the sun. Meatlug occasionally took breaks in between playing to converse with the elder two female Boneknappers. Their saddles were off and piled neatly to the side.

Gobber and Fishlegs were both talking to the male and eldest female, trying to discuss about their roles as parents. Snotlout was chilling next to his dragon, ignoring everything that was going on. The twins were trying to convince the babies to be a part of their pranks, but failing miserably and end up being pranked themselves on behalf of Toothless. Hiccup and Astrid were both trying to talk to the strange new teen, hoping to get him to spill where he suddenly came from, with not much luck.

The boy, Danny, (what an interesting name, Hiccup had thought when he said it) didn't talk much. He tended to stay with the young female and watch over her, who in turn showed great affection towards him. He was quiet but kind, and friendly enough. He just wasn't much of a talker and when he did, often spoke with a bit of an accent.

"So, Danny, how did you manage to befriend the Boneknappers anyway? Since you won't tell us where you came from." Astrid questioned with a raised eyebrow, a bit peeved and suspicious that Danny wasn't bothering to tell them anything.

Danny scratched the back of his neck in an awkward gesture, looking away, "I don't know, I just saw them and they walked over to me. I was too shocked to move and thought they were going to attack, especially when I noticed the nest, but they just seemed curious." He shrugged, as if wild dragons completely skipping over their hostility for curiosity wasn't a crazy thing to happen to him.

When it seemed like Astrid wasn't going to respond in her dumbfounded shock, Hiccup took over to ask a question he had on his mind, "Wait, so how long have you been here? With the dragons?" Astrid perked up at that as well, curious to see when this older boy had come along to befriend the dragons since they had just visited a week before.

Danny seemed to think about the answer for a moment before responding. "I think it's been three days? Maybe four. I wasn't keeping track and I slept a lot at random hours at first."

Hiccup thought about that for a moment. Four days with dragons? He had appeared only two days after we left back to Berk. Before he could think further about what his arrival might mean, Danny had spoken up.

"So, you guys ride dragons? With actual saddles? You called these guys 'Boneknappers', what kind of dragons do you ride?" He seemed genuinely curious about the dragons, without a hint of a possible hidden motive in his actions or eyes.

Giving each other a quick glance, Hiccup and Astrid decided to regale him with their stories and descriptions of their dragons, trying to get Danny to pick a favorite between their Night Fury and Deadly Nadder to hopefully lord it over the other's head.

•••

It's been two days since the reunion and subsequent surprise guests arriving at the island with the Boneknapper family.

Danny couldn't believe it when he woke up to the chattering of the male and some new voices, both dragon and human. He was even more confused when it had been a very strange assortment of teens and single adult. The colorful dragons eyeing him curiously behind said teens was new, too.

Living with the Boneknappers was interesting, to say the least. Being able to speak in Ghost Speak and have them understand was certainly a fun discovery that will probably never repeat itself. Maybe. He can't be completely sure when he doesn't even know how long he'll be stuck here for.

The youngest female mother was such a sweetheart, with her single rambunctious baby. They both took to Danny extremely well and was now an honorary member of their tiny family. The eldest female and her two children were rather welcoming as well, and didn't seem to have any problems with him. The last female was the one with her clutch of three eggs, waiting for them to hatch any day now. She hasn't moved much from her spot beside her eggs, often sitting next to them or curled around them protectively.

Now though, it has become rather chaotic with the newcomers.

The twins and Snotlout - seriously, who names their kid "Snotlout" unless they had a vendetta against them - liked to cause trouble, either within their friend group or within the Boneknapper family, it was all fair game. Danny and Hiccup both have had to stop them from hurting themselves or others on multiple occasions. They had tried to pull the babies into it, but Danny and the mothers had always put a stop to it immediately before anything could be done.

Gobber and the male Boneknapper acted almost like old friends - and that very well could be the reason - and simply hung out together. Gobber would talk the dragon's ear off while scratching his hook along the jaw and neck, while said dragon would wag his gigantic, boney tail, asking for more scratches and occasionally showing off his tiny offspring and mates.

The rest of the kids were well behaved, for the most part. Fishlegs often asked a lot of questions, both to Danny and the dragons, but was a good kid, if a bit wimpy and self deprecating. Astrid could probably work with her fondness for dangerous weapons, but he couldn't help but think that she was the best option for punishment when it came to the troublemakers. To each their own, I guess.

Hiccup was an interesting one. He had a way with the dragons, it seems. He always seemed to know if there was something wrong or how to calm down a wild dragon that got too close to the expecting family. His dragon, Toothless, is also strange in his own way. Supposedly a dragon so mysterious and powerful, that they haven't found hide nor scale of another potential Night Fury in all their year of searching since their truce with the dragons. He could agree that they were an amazing duo in the air, though.

•••

"How come you don't take any of our extra vests or shirts? Isn't it cold with just that thin shirt?" Hiccup inquired while they were both lounging against Toothless's side.

Danny just shrugged as he closed his eyes, "I just don't feel cold. I quite like it. You can dump me in the middle of a blizzard with just a pair of shorts and I'll be fine." He mentally chuckled at the thought, thinking he would feel right at home in that blizzard, possibly just spending that time making snow angels.

Hiccup noticed him subconsciously massaging his left palm with his right thumb, seeing the lightning scars racing from the balls of his fingers and up his arm before disappearing into the sleeve of his shirt. His own hand instinctively went to lightly scratch at his own scar from his stint of trying to prove Thor was angry with metal and not the dragons.

A roar caught their attention and all three of them whipped their heads to the direction of the expecting mother.

The Boneknapper moved to stand from where she was curled around her eggs. Now in plain view for everyone to see, they noticed that the three eggs were shaking with vigor. Everyone immediately moved to crowd around the eggs, but leaving enough space in between them, knowing just what happens when an egg hatches.

Danny didn't seem to get the memo though, as he went past everyone to get a closer look.

"Wait, Danny! Don't get closer-!" Before he could finish his warning, the first egg exploded almost directly into Danny's face. The teens and dragons squawked in surprise and faint smoke covered their vision. Hiccup debated going closer to check on the older teen and risking an egg hatching in front of him, when they all heard a stuttering laughter come from the smoke.

The smoke started to fade away quickly, allowing everyone to see a downed, laughing Danny cradling a wriggling baby dragon the size of his whole torso.

"Man! No wonder you guys were all the way back there! Haha! That was an interesting experience that I gotta tell the others." Danny had a wide smile on his face as the baby got used to their limbs, climbing out of his arms and doing a stumbling waddle towards their mother.

When Danny stood up and made his way back over to the safely distanced teens and dragons, Hiccup could see a bit of soot on the boy's face and a few singed-tipped hairs. "Did you enjoy your first egg hatching experience?" Hiccup asked him completely deadpan with a raised eyebrow. But his eyes showed off the mirth and amusement he felt.

Danny let out a deep bellied chuckle, settling into place beside him. The others were all either holding their laughter, or letting it rip while they were bent over or on the ground. The taller boy simply looked back over to the remaining two eggs in anticipation.

•••

The last two eggs were just as explosive as the first, and now all three brand new babies are being coddled and groomed by their mother.

Danny was laying on top of the young female's back, as he always does at night, staring up at the bright moon and star filled sky. It's so clear and beautiful here... there's so many stars that we can't see back in Amity without the help of a telescope... I guess I should join Sam when she goes out advocating nature rights more often.

His thoughts drifted to and from topic to topic, before landing to Hiccup and his group. They're going back to their home island Berk tomorrow morning. An island in peace between vikings and dragons, after generations of war. Almost sounds like a dream come true.

Sighing into the night sky, he turned over onto his side, facing the ragtag group of teens and dragons. He watched as they all slept peacefully by their dragons, the Boneknappers sleeping with their children, and the male sleeping with Gobber.

The young mother he laid on raised her head to look curiously at Danny. She let out a barely audible grumble, aware that everyone is sleeping. Danny smiled and reached out to stroke her boney snout. "Just thinking, mama. Don't worry about me. You should go back to sleep."

The dragon gave him an unimpressed look and huffed out a denial.

Danny released an airy chuckle before looking back to the unique group. "I just wish my town - or village, I guess, in your guys' terms - would be as accepting as theirs is. Sure, they had to take seven generations and a final battle against a supposedly gigantic terror dragon to stop the animosity, but they managed it. I just desperately hope my town could do the same, for my people's sake..." His eyes gained a faraway look as he thought about the ghosts, his subjects, being strapped to operation tables or shot at with destructive ectoguns that could potentially make them fade forever.

The mother gave off a saddened purr, rubbing her nose against his face in hopes of cheering him up. He smiled and hugged her giant snout in a show of appreciation.

"Thanks, mama. I guess it's time to go to sleep, huh? Everything will solve itself out in time, and no point in worrying about it now. I'll be sure to worry when I'm back home." Danny gave one last pat to the dragon's nose before rolling onto his back again, eyeing the starry sky for a moment. Once he had his fill, he turned away from the others, and closed his eyes to sleep.

Had he paid enough attention to use his heightened hearing during his one sided talk, he would have noticed that one of the human heartbeats weren't that of a sleeping person's. He never realized that a single teen leaning against his black dragon had been listening intently to his inner struggles.

•••

The sun rose bright in the sky the next day, and everyone was getting ready for the flight back home.

Hiccup strapped up Toothless's saddle, fitting on the tail piece. His dragon partner watched him with his ever curious eyes for a moment before turning them to look towards Danny. The older teen was by the young mother, playing with all six baby Boneknappers. He was surprisingly good at keeping them all in line and kept them from hurting themselves by accident.

A deep warble caught Hiccup's attention after he had just gotten the last piece into place, and he looks up to Toothless giving him a questioning gaze. "What is it, bud?" He sits back on the heels of his feet as he asks.

Toothless let out a gruff and turned to Danny, then to the direction of Berk, and finally to Hiccup again. He made a rumbling purr sound in question as he tilted his head.

Hiccup raised an eyebrow at the crypticness of trying to understand a dragon without human speech. He looked in every way his dragon had indicated, before it clicked, "Are you trying to tell me, that I should ask Danny to come to Berk with us?"

The response came to him as a wide, gummy smile and the dancing tip-toes. He laughed at Toothless's enthusiasm on the subject before standing up and brushing the rock dust off his knees.

"Alright, bud, I'll ask but I won't make any promises." He turned away from the now patiently sitting dragon, walking over to Danny and the babies. "Hey, Danny?"

Said teen looked up from slowly being piled by giant dragon babies. "Yeah?"

Holding in a laugh at the nonchalance on the teen's face as more and more small dragons clamor all over him, Hiccup spoke the reason for him coming over, "So, uh, Toothless seemed to want to ask, if you would like to come with us to Berk?"

Danny looked surprised at the invitation, looking around Hiccup to see the black dragon in question, before glancing to the Boneknapper family that surrounded him. He seemed to genuinely think on his answer, and looked up again when he got one. "I appreciate the invitation to your guys' home island. But I have to get back to mine soon, and the Boneknappers can help me with that."

Holding in a sigh at the rejection, Hiccup gave a small smile to the buried teen. "Alright. I did say 'no promises' to Toothless." He looked up to the gathered adults either watching their exchange or to his friends getting ready to leave. "I hope they can help you out with that, then. Good luck on getting back home."

He started to walk back to Toothless when Danny called out, "And to you, too. Don't get into too much trouble on the way back!" Danny said it with such a smug smirk that Hiccup had to laugh at it.

"Ohh, you have no idea."

Danny just let out a sudden bark of laughter at his words before responding back, "I think I do. Have a good trip."

The warm smile Hiccup recieved nearly made him trip in surprise, but he managed one of his own in return.

Reaching Toothless, he broke the bad news to the dragon. He looked down with a grumble, but didn't seem to mind too much.

"Alright, guys. It's time to head back home." There were a few cheers and the group soon started mounting their dragons after making sure they had everything packed. Hiccup hopped onto Toothless, sliding his metal foot into the modified stirrup, flapping the fake tail fin open and closed a few times to check that everything was fine. Turning to face the others in his group, he called out, "Don't forget to say bye to Danny."

The subsequent 'bye's, 'goodbye's, and 'see you later's that flew through the air would be impressive, given that they had only known Danny for around four days.

In turn, Danny waved his scarred arm at the group. "Have a safe flight!" The Boneknappers surrounding the boy gave out roars of their own, saying their 'goodbye's and 'good luck's.

With that, Hiccup and Toothless pushed up into the air, the others following behind. Hiccup turned around in his place on the saddle to give one last wave of goodbye to Danny and the dragons.

And just like that, the dragon trainers left the Boneknapper's island behind, on their way back home to the island of Berk.

•••

Danny watched as the dragons quickly flew away from the island towards their destination. He looked back to the adult Boneknappers that huddled closer to him in preparation.

"I guess this is where we part ways, huh?" He chatted to stall for time. The dragons let out whining grumbles, each taking turns to bump their giant noses into his face. He chuckled at their antics before speaking again, "Sorry, but I have to go. I don't know how much time has passed in my world, if time even moved on at all. I need to check on everyone to make sure they're all safe."

The dragons give Danny one last nose rub before moving away. The babies on the other hand, all start to pile on him and cry out adorably. He chuckles and gives them all the pats and scratches they desire. Once he deemed they had gotten enough attention, he gently started to pry them off and set them onto the floor in front of him.

"Be good to your mothers and father, you hear me?" Danny pointed a finger to the rambunctious children with a raised eyebrow. "I have to leave now so behave, you little gremlins."

The dragons all cried out, either in a sassy, spoiled sort of way, or in an understanding, older sibling way. He shook his head fondly at the responses. Reminds me of Jazz and I.

Danny backs away from the large family and gives them all a last once over, trying to commit them to memory. "I'll try my best to come back and visit you guys. I'm not sure when it'll happen, but I'll do my best to return." He closes his eyes to get ready to change forms, and opens his mouth to call out his signature phrase, "Going Ghost!"

The moonlight-colored rings burst out from Danny's chest, separating into two to travel up and down his frame. Along the way, the rings changed his appearance, converting his t-shirt, jeans, and converse into an upgraded version of his Phantom hazmat suit. The Ring Of Rage was nestled on his finger, and the Crown Of Fire gently floated above his wispy, snow white hair. He had only changed forms once during his week in the world of dragons. It was the day after he arrived, and he had to see just how much energy he would need to create his own portal back home.

The three recently hatched babies squealed and jumped back in surprise, having not seen Danny's ghost form before like the others.

Chuckling at their reactions, Danny kneeled down to meet their gazes with a smile. "Hey, sorry for not warning you. But that was funny." He grinned mischievously at the babies, who in turn gave him disgruntled squawks.

Standing back up, Danny did a little hop and activated his flight, hovering above the ground with his spectral tail underneath him.

Looking back up to view the entire family, the halfa raised a hand to wave, while the hand that held the Ring rose straight out to the side with the palm out. "I'll see you guys soon. I promise."

With that, Danny shot out an ecto-blast from his outstretched hand. The green ball of ghostly fire flew out a few feet before abruptly stopping in the air, warping and expanding into a wormhole-esque portal of green and purple energy. He immediately felt a major drain in his energy after making his portal so he changed back to his human form, feet touching back down to the floor.

The halfa glanced at the dragons. They eyed him sadly so he quickly went to give each of them a last hug. "I'm going to miss you guys... Be safe..."

After the last hug, he quickly said his goodbyes, and walked into the portal with a heavy, but relieved, heart. Stepping through to not be seen again in the world of Dragons and Vikings for a while yet.

Chapter 2: Note

Summary:

I've decided on the future of this one shot

Chapter Text

Ok, so, thanks to popular demand (not really, it was just a couple of comments and a crap ton of kudos, but that was enough for me), I've decided to continue this fic.

But not quite how you would expect.

I've been writing a new HTTYD crossover story for awhile now with a bit of a twist (or at least I hope, it hasn't been done last time I checked, but it has been a few months since I last tried searching for this specific crossover), and was planning on releasing it some time soon.

But I suddenly got the idea, "what if I sorta merged this new story with what's already happened in this one shot?"

And so, the birth of a new series has arisen!

I'll possibly keep posting a series of one shots into this fic specifically around Danny's encounters with the Boneknappers, and occasionally with cameos including Hiccup and the Riders. But the main story will involve a whole new plot and whole new interactions.

The new story will take place roughly a year or so after this original first chapter of the one shot. Any extra chapters released here will either happen between the time of this first chapter and the beginning of the new story, or will be during ongoing chapters of the new story as a sort of extra standalone that doesnt need to be put in with the rest of the contents.

Future chapters for this fic may be chronologically out of order bc of this as I just post random moments of Danny hanging out with the Boneknappers.

I'm debating whether to leave this note within the chapters or to delete it close to the time I would post a new part, but maybe I'll compromise and delete this fake chapter and explain in shorter words as a beginning note with whatever I'll post next.

So keep your eyes out for a new addition to the series sometime soon!

I'm trying to post a couple of my stories so I'll actually have an excuse and reason to continue writing instead of leaving them as simple plot points in my notes app. So, as my new tradition (or forced habit I am trying to convince myself to do), I will post the first chapter of the new story soon, update my ongoing BNHA crossover story, and maybe even post another whole new story. I'll probably have my hands full with my BNHA and HTTYD stories tho, so maybe not.

Till next time I indulge in your guys' need for content! Stay safe, take your meds, try to get the right amount of sleep, and good luck in this new school year and at work in this stressful economy! I'll see you guys soon.

If you guys see any grammar mistakes, missing or redundant words, a missing this ' in words like cant so something, or see a thing somewhere in there that I missed while editing, lemme know, I beta read my own stuff, you guys have no idea how many times I end up reading these chapters just to make sure nothing is wrong lol
I might make more one shots out of this but I doubt it, I have several more plots that I wanna do with the HTTYD crossover anyway that require my full (or as full as I can do lol) attention
Depending on how I manage to navigate thru ao3, I might make a 2nd update just for art I made for this, or I might just update this one shot to have it in the chapter, OR i might have to be forced to add the art to the comments. Ya never know. But itll be awhile before I do try, so maybe start checking back in in like, idk a month??
Also sorry if the story wasn't as dialogue heavy as you guys wanted it to be, or for not adding the other teens and Gobber into the mix as much. I tried but there were alot of ppl here and for some reason my writing flourishes in over amounts of exposition, worldbuilding, and details rather than dialogue, and can really only focus on one thing at a time
Hope you guys enjoyed the story!
