Chapter Text

Night had long since fallen, but a light could still be seen coming from one of the Osiris Red dorm rooms. Inside, two students had just wrapped up yet another mock duel and they were now laying on the floor, continuing to chat the evening away. Since the opening ceremony a few days ago, they had been practically inseparable, and depending on who you spoke with, this was either an endearing or somewhat annoying development. For Judai and Johan though, it was just a natural one.

Still on his back, Johan had brought up his legs and rested them against the wall, making a ‘L’ shape. He spread his arms out wide as he looked up with a thoughtful expression.

“Hey, Judai, do you have a good luck charm?” he asked suddenly.

The question came out of nowhere and the randomness of it combined with Johan’s silly pose made Judai laugh. The other boy always seemed to have something interesting to talk about, not that Judai minded in the least. Judai shuffled a bit closer and mimicked his new friend, laying with his legs up against the wall but he let his arms rest on his stomach.

“A good luck charm? Hmm, maybe Hane Kuriboh?” The spirit in question morphed beside Judai and happily trilled.

Ruby Carbuncle also morphed into view, looking ready to pounce as she carefully watched the other duel spirit hover overhead. The jewel on her tail glimmered when she leapt high into the air. Hane Kuriboh’s startled squeak was more comical as opposed to concerning, and the two duelists watched with awkward expressions as the spirits took their scuffle to the floor. Hane Kuriboh had never acted like this before so Judai initially worried that the two spirits disliked each other, but as the days went by, it became evident the two were only play-fighting and they actually enjoyed challenging each other in this way.

The spirits moved their game to the bunkbed and Johan decided to sit back up in a proper cross-legged position. He gave a lopsided grin.

“Do you wanna know something that’s kinda funny?”

Judai saw the slightly playful glint in Johan’s eyes and couldn’t help matching it. He also sat up and raised an eyebrow, inviting his new friend to elaborate.

Johan reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, fluffy keychain. He dangled it from his fingers so Judai could see. It was brown, had two big button eyes and was terribly easy to recognize.

“Kuriboh!” Judai exclaimed loudly with a smile.

“It’s unfortunately not Hane Kuriboh though.”

Judai stared at the trinket, eyes shining.

“I’ve never seen such a cute Kuriboh keychain before! Can I hold it?”

Johan tossed it gently his way.

“Be careful. That’s my good luck charm you’re holding!”

Judai couldn’t help but inspect the keychain more closely.

“This is your good luck charm?” he asked.

Johan leaned over a bit closer and smiled.

“Sure is! It’s a bit ironic, right?”

Hane Kuriboh had made his way back over. The tiny spirit inspected the keychain as well and chirped once in approval.

Judai had to admit that this discovery was a little funny. He never thought of Johan as a Kuriboh fan, but he supposed the brown and fuzzy duel monster was pretty popular. He was surprised with how fluffy the keychain was, the feeling of the synthetic fur was nostalgic for some reason. It was soft and tickled at his fingertips. The same quality couldn’t be said for the big round eyes though. The right eye was almost completely rubbed off. Seeing Judai had noticed this, Johan spoke up as he awkwardly scratched at the back of his head.

“It’s a little worn. When I’m anxious, I rub its eye and it calms me down a bit.”

“His eye is more than just a little worn. You must be a pretty anxious guy!” Judai lightly teased.

Johan hummed thoughtfully before replying.

“Not so much now, but I used to be, I guess. I’ve had that since before I met the Gem Beasts.”

Judai liked how open Johan was about everything. He felt like he could talk with him about almost anything, sitting around and chatting with him felt easy. Judai supposed that was why they had spent every night doing exactly that since the Northern Academia student had arrived.

“Wow, so this guy has been with you for quite a while then. Where did you get him?” Judai asked as he started petting the soft fur.

“I found it when I was younger and ended up keeping it with me,” Johan mused. “It looks unassuming but somehow it brings a lot of comfort when you hold it, and as you can tell by how fluffy it still is despite everything it’s been through, it’s also quite resilient! Anything that special must be somewhat lucky, right?”

Johan laughed then, bright and a bit loud. Judai couldn’t help joining him as he found Johan’s laugh infectious. It stood out to him right away during the exhibition match when the Gem Beast duelist had pretended to summon Rainbow Dragon, tricked everyone in attendance, and then laughed about it like he had made the best joke ever. While some found it a bit brash, Judai chose to view Johan’s confidence as another trait to admire instead.

When Johan stopped laughing, he noticed that Judai was still gently petting the keychain.

“You like it?” he questioned with a small smile.

Judai paused. Johan’s eyes were suddenly much softer and they contained an almost wistful look. Judai couldn't explain why but a warmth bloomed in his chest at the sight. Feeling unsure, he tried to mask it by mimicking Johan's earlier laughter again.

“Yeah, I can see why you find it calming now. This is actually really soft, it’s hard not to keep playing with it.” Judai went to finally pass the keychain back, but Johan shook his head.

“You should hold onto it for me then!”

Judai was a bit stunned.

“Huh, why would you do that? I thought this was your good luck charm?”

“Yeah, but I don’t think I need it anymore,” Johan answered, as if it were as simple as that.

Judai waited for Johan to elaborate but when the other didn’t, he looked back at the keychain in his hands.

“You sure?”

Johan nodded energetically.

“I just have this strong feeling that he belongs with you. Sorry, maybe that's a bit weird to say." Johan grinned sheepishly. "But you should try keeping it in your pocket in case you ever find yourself feeling anxious. I can guarantee its effectiveness!”

“I’m not really the anxious type though, so maybe you should keep it,” Judai half-joked back, but he didn’t let the keychain go.

“Since coming here, when I look at the keychain, it’s started reminding me of you. I want you to have it.”

Johan’s mint-coloured eyes were shining with a hint of something else Judai couldn’t yet place. There was a tenderness to them that felt somehow nostalgic but it also made Judai’s heart race. He looked down at the keychain again. This one-eyed, fuzzy Kuriboh reminded Johan of him?

When Judai didn’t respond right away, Johan continued quickly, “Well, after this school year is over, you can give it back to me if you still don’t want it. How about that?”

Judai had just met the other boy, but the idea of Johan leaving was already something he was realizing he didn’t like to think about. He cradled the keychain a little more carefully.

“Alright, yeah. I guess I can hold onto this guy for now,” he offered.

“Great, thanks! I appreciate that.” Johan gave a wink.

Judai wasn’t sure why Johan was thanking him, but before he could ask, Johan reached behind himself and produced the brown bag he had brought with him that evening. He dumped the contents out in front of them and Judai’s eyes widened at seeing all the card packs that now littered the floor.

“I bought these at the school store. Want to look at them with me?” Johan grinned, appearing quite excited, and it wasn’t hard for Judai to match his enthusiasm.

“Sure! Opening a new pack really makes your heart race, huh?”

“Yeah!”

Judai gently placed the small keychain in his pocket and shifted his focus to the pile of cards on the floor. If the keychain was actually lucky like Johan claimed, then maybe he’d manage some good pulls.

Lastly, thank you to anyone who has read this series! It really means a lot to me. 💖 I have a post pinned on my ‘X’ account that links to a Google Doc with the 2023 version of the entire story. I’ll keep it archived there in case anyone prefers that version over this one.

Chapter 2: Unexpected

Chapter Text

It was late in the evening and Johan was deeply focused on his study notes at his desk, so when he heard a high-pitched squeak coming from behind, it startled him. He spun around in his chair to locate the source of the noise and witnessed Hane Kuriboh and Ruby Carbuncle in the midst of another midair scuffle.

Johan let out a relieved sigh before calling out cheerfully, “You can come in, Judai!”

The door opened and revealed a confused looking Osiris Red student.

“I didn’t even get a chance to knock on the door, how’d you know it was me?” Judai laughed a bit sheepishly as he walked in.

“A certain flying friend gave you away.” Johan motioned to the two duel spirits who were now tussling on his bed. “Next time, you can just come in. Don’t worry about knocking.”

“Yeah, sure, I can do that.” Judai grinned as he made himself comfortable by sitting on the edge of Johan’s bed. As he glanced around, something instantly caught his eye.

“Oh, you kept that?” Judai pointed at the flower crown that he had noticed was resting on the lamp that sat on Johan’s bedside table.

Yesterday, the two of them had been hanging out in the forest to decompress for a time. Judai had just come out of the infirmary after dueling O’Brien, so they agreed it couldn’t hurt to take it easy for a bit. Naturally, that led to them taking an impromptu nap under a particularly shady tree, but when Johan woke up, he was surprised to find a colourful flower crown adorning his head. When he asked his friend about it, Judai gave that trademark goofy grin of his.

“I kept seeing flowers that matched-up with each of the Gem Beasts! I couldn’t help it, it was too perfect.”

Johan felt butterflies in his stomach as he remembered the moment, but he tried to suppress them. There was a good chance Judai didn’t mean anything too deeply by that gesture, but it still touched Johan’s heart all the same. He turned around in his chair so he could better face his friend.

“The flowers you picked were so beautiful. I’m hoping they’ll dry out nice.”

“That’s cool.” Judai was still grinning, seeming happy with himself. He then turned away from the flowers to look at Johan. “If they don’t dry out nice like you want, let me know and I’ll make you another one.”

Johan was sure his expression was giving him away with how happy that statement made him, so he tried to casually stare upwards.

“I think Rainbow Dragon would like it too. I want to dry the flowers out so I can show them someday.”

Judai kept grinning and leaned closer towards Johan’s desk.

“That’s a great idea. Once we find Rainbow Dragon, let’s take your family to the forest and make some more flower crowns together.”

Johan smiled back and eagerly nodded. Before now, he never experienced this kind of discussion so easily. Judai had never questioned it when Johan shared that the Gem Beasts were his family. Johan was sure Judai must be somewhat curious about the circumstances behind that, and Johan didn’t doubt that maybe one day he’d tell him, but for now, the fact that Judai accepted this part of him so easily was deeply moving. Johan wasn’t sure if his new friend realized how much it meant to him. He wanted to express that to Judai, but suddenly found himself feeling shy as his heart beat fast in his chest. Johan defaulted back to their usual banter since a blush was threatening to creep up his face.

“So, what brings you to my door this fine evening? Are you now personally making sure I found my way back to my dorm room this time?”

The night before, Judai had sent Hane Kuriboh to escort Johan back to the Obelisk Blue dorms and it ended up being the right call to make. Johan almost took the wrong turn countless times.

“Yeah, you could say that. I don’t like that you get lost so easily. It makes me kind of uneasy, so I’ll probably just tag along from now on if you need to go back to your own dorm room at night,” Judai said. “Actually, if there’s anywhere you want to go and you aren’t sure about how to get there, you can ask me.”

Judai answered more sincerely than Johan had been expecting, and the earnest look in Judai’s eyes made the butterflies flutter about in Johan’s stomach once more. If Judai kept innocently doing and saying things like this, Johan wasn’t sure his heart could take it for the whole year. The blush was returning to his face as well, and so Johan rested his head in his hands in an attempt to try and hide it.

Johan had enough self-awareness to know that he’d have to confront this crush of his at some point but he also didn’t want to move too quickly. For now, he’d wait and try to follow Judai’s lead. It was somewhat hard to know for sure how Judai felt, but Johan didn’t doubt that if they kept getting to know each other like they have been, he’d figure that part out eventually.

Judai was still staring at him with bright eyes and he looked genuinely excited.

“There was something I wanted to ask you about too,” Judai announced before lightly bouncing on Johan’s bed, as if testing it. Afterwards, he looked dissatisfied. “Hmm, it’s just as I thought. I was worried this was the case.”

Johan was genuinely puzzled. “Is something wrong with my bed?”

“Yup, but it’s not only yours. All the beds in Obelisk Blue suck!”

Realizing then that his friend was just joking around, Johan rested his arms on the back of his chair and naturally played along.

“You don’t say? It’s funny because I’ve been thinking the same thing! It must have something to do with the expensive silk sheets and the pillows stuffed with too much goose down.”

“Huh, goose…what?” Judai mumbled but he quickly shook his head and rebounded. “Anyway, it doesn’t matter because luckily for you, I have a near perfect solution.” Judai pointed with two fingers, giving what Johan came to understand was his signature hand sign.

Johan couldn’t help but find Judai charming in moments like this. He was so lively and charismatic, that even when he was being a bit silly, it was hard not to get wrapped up in Judai’s energy.

“That’s great! So, what’s the solution?” Johan smirked, humouring him.

“It’s easy, you should just start spending every night over at my dorm.” Judai made the statement like it was an obvious one. “The beds are so much comfier, and you get the greatest view of the sunset from the nearby dock. However, the absolute best part is that it comes with excellent company, if I do say so myself.”

Finished with his pitch, Judai crossed his arms and waited eagerly for Johan’s response. Despite their bantering, Johan could tell Judai was actually serious about this proposition of his, so it unfortunately warranted a somewhat serious answer.

“You made a lot of good points but there is one flaw with your suggestion.” Johan turned slightly and patted the paperwork on his desk. “I don’t think I’d get much studying done if I stayed over at your room every night.”

Judai raised an eyebrow and let out a laugh. “Aw, come on! You’re an amazing duelist, Johan. Someone like you probably doesn’t even need to study!”

“Firstly, thank you, but secondly, that’s not entirely true. My dueling record played a part, of course, but I was only allowed to come here because of that and my grades.” Johan gave a small shrug and offered an apologetic smile. “If they slip too much, I might be in trouble.”

Judai’s eyes widened and he gripped the edge of the bed as a realization hit him. “Wait…you mean they’ll send you back home if you don’t do your homework?!”

Johan felt a bit bad bursting Judai’s bubble like that, but it was the somewhat somber truth. Being abroad for only a year, Johan wasn’t expected to keep up the same caliber of grades that he had back home, but even he had to admit that he’d been slacking off a lot since coming here and that was bound to eventually get him in trouble. Given how much he’d been hanging out with Judai too, it was possible they could both get wrapped up in the reprimanding.

Johan continued, “I would like to think it wouldn’t be so extreme that they’d ship me back up North, but I’d rather not find out.”

Judai nodded slowly, seeming to process this newly discovered information.

“No, we definitely can’t let your grades drop. I mean, this island is big, but I don’t know how long I could hide you for if they came looking to take you away.” Judai joked and they both laughed at the ridiculous mental image of Judai secretly trying to hide Johan on the island somewhere.

After the laughter died down, Judai awkwardly looked to the side.

“Umm, so I should probably let you get back to it then, huh?”

Something in Judai’s expression tugged at Johan and he paused for a moment before a thought came to him. “Actually, there’s some kanji that’s been giving me trouble for a few pages now.” He looked at Judai, eyes hopeful. “Do you think you could help me with it?”

Judai’s whole demeanor completely lit up again. “Yeah, of course. Let me see!”

In a rush, he pulled up a chair next to Johan and started eagerly explaining the play the lesson plan was detailing.

--

The next day, Professor Chronos had given the two a scolding for drifting off in class and when Judai complained it was because they had been up all night studying, the instructor promptly threatened him with detention if he didn’t stop lying.

Only once Chronos had resumed teaching his lesson did Judai whisper quietly to Johan, looking exasperated, “See? I told you we should have skipped first period.”

Chapter Text

“You look really tired, are you sure you don’t want to go to the infirmary? I can take you,” Judai offered somewhat helplessly.

Johan was currently lying in Judai’s bed at the Osiris Red dorm. Ruby was curled up by his side in a tight ball and Judai found himself sitting on the floor, leaning against the bedframe and fretting more than he could ever remember fretting in a long while. Johan was normally a rather lively individual so seeing him completely worn out and bedridden like this caused a pit of uncomfortable anxiety to settle in Judai's stomach. He didn't like this, not at all.

Johan kept an arm over his face and his voice was somewhat faint as he gently tried to reassure him. “I'll be alright after resting for a bit. Though, these dis-duels are really something, aren’t they?”

Johan had dueled an Obelisk Blue student who challenged him while he and Judai were hanging out near the beach going over some possible deck builds. Johan came out the victor of the duel but the aftereffects from the dis-belt seemed to be hitting him harder than usual. Judai suddenly recalled how both Kenzan and Jim ended up in the infirmary after their duel not that long ago.

“The dis-duels seem to be ramping up somehow. I think we really should get Professor Ayukawa to take a look at you.”

It wasn’t like Judai to push an issue, but he was finding himself doing all sorts of new things when it came to Johan lately.

Johan removed his arm from his face and gave Judai a small but hesitant smile.

“Can I tell you something stupid?”

“I don’t think you could ever say anything stupid,” Judai countered.

Judai then maneuvered himself so that he was now sitting on the end of the bed, facing Johan. The other boy flinched slightly as he mirrored Judai and also sat up.

“Thanks, Judai. I do feel like I can tell you anything but this one is a little weird…I, umm...” Johan trailed off, almost seeming like he was going to change his mind for a moment.

Judai waited and stared at him encouragingly, gentle brown eyes meeting hesitant emerald-coloured ones. The action caused Johan to cave in, and he let out an uncharacteristic nervous breath.

“I don’t like hospitals. As in, I really don’t like them. I know the infirmary at Duel Academia isn’t one exactly, but the thought of being hooked up to some machine really freaks me out.”

Johan looked nervous and uncomfortable, which were new expressions Judai hadn’t seen his friend wear yet. Johan was usually always so confident, energetic, and bright. Judai instantly was struck by an urge to reassure him.

“I totally get that, actually. I don’t like hospitals much either so I can understand why you’d want to avoid stuff like that.” When Johan’s eyes softened some, Judai continued, “I used to have to go quite a bit when I was younger.”

“Yeah, me too,” Johan admitted. “I can’t believe we have that in common as well — it’s crazy.” Ever blunt, he ventured, “Do you mind if I ask why you had to go so much?”

Judai awkwardly rubbed at the back of his neck.

“No, I don’t mind but, well, the thing is, I can’t really remember why I was there so much? I just know I had to go a lot for a time, but it stopped shortly after I started middle school. My parents never really talk about it much either.”

“It’s hard to talk about difficult times.”

Judai saw a faraway look cloud Johan’s eyes and he quickly found himself blurting out, “Yeah, that’s true but so far, I haven’t had any issues talking about that kind of stuff with you!” Judai exclaimed a bit too enthusiastically. He toned his voice down a bit before adding, “Umm, I hope you feel the same way…”

Judai wasn’t sure why he added that last bit. Truthfully, he didn’t usually care too much regarding how others felt about him but for some reason, he found himself caring a lot about what Johan felt about him.

Johan’s expression was warm and he replied easily, “Of course I do! I’ve never had a best friend before. It feels nice.”

Judai paused to consider that. A best friend? Is that what this was? Judai thought about it and realized that he never had someone he’d considered a best friend before either. He’d had friends, sure, but there was no denying that Johan was different somehow. It was special and Judai was finding himself feeling a little overwhelmed with the depth of it sometimes. They’d known each other for such a short amount of time but they just clicked, like two puzzle pieces. If this is what a best friend was, then he wanted to keep Johan as his best friend forever.

Feeling encouraged by Johan’s openness, Judai decided he wanted to ask the same question in return.

“You mentioned you went to the hospital a lot growing up too,” Judai said. “Do you remember why?”

“I have a weaker immune system,” Johan replied. “I used to get sick a lot when I was a kid. I’d have fevers so high that I’d have to go to the hospital pretty often.”

Judai couldn’t help it when a wave of anxiety washed over him.

“You don’t get fevers like that anymore now though, right?”

“This is something I was born with so it’ll never fully go away, but I’m generally healthier than I was when I was younger.” Johan gave a small shrug followed by an awkward smile. “I guess I should be mindful about trying not to get sick but at the same time, there’s only so much I can do, right?”

“If you need to be careful about not getting sick, then…”

Judai’s thoughts trailed off as he started thinking of some of the stuff they’d been up to so far. More often than not, they’d both stay up quite late and then get up early for class the next day. They even shared food, sometimes, at the cafeteria. These weren’t abnormal things to do but they were maybe things they should avoid if Johan had a weaker immune system. Johan seemed like a pretty healthy individual so this news was a surprise to Judai. He continued to critically go over events and Johan seemed to notice.

“Hey, don’t worry about it. I don’t like being coddled, and life would be really boring if I stayed inside trying to avoid germs all the time!” Johan said energetically.

Judai could respect that sentiment. He had an adventurous spirit himself and wouldn’t want to be coddled either.

“I’m glad you’re healthier than when you were younger,” Judai said honestly. “It sounds like it was tough.”

“I used to miss a lot of school, so I didn’t have many friends. It was pretty lonely,” Johan admitted. Ruby curled back up in Johan’s lap and he looked down at her wistfully. “I think I would have had a less difficult time if I had these guys with me back then.” After seeming to think about it a little more, he smiled somewhat shyly and added, “I probably would have had a better time if you had been there with me too.”

Judai found himself matching Johan’s smile and he shuffled over until they were pressed together, shoulders and knees touching. The closeness was a comfort but despite that, Judai still found himself feeling a bit wary after this recent revelation. The thought of Johan getting really sick left an uncomfortable heaviness in his heart that he couldn’t shake for some reason.

“Let’s stay in today and take it easy,” Judai offered but he quickly added, “I-I don't mean to be coddling you or anything.”

Johan laid his head to rest on Judai's shoulder.

"It’s okay. I’m actually feeling a bit better now, but I think that still sounds nice.”

Judai felt a warmth spread over his body when Johan made no attempt to move away. They stayed like that for a while in comfortable silence. It was a new sensation for Judai, but he found himself feeling especially connected to Johan at that moment. It was oddly peaceful and soothing. It felt right, having Johan by his side like this.

Johan’s hair was tickling Judai’s neck a little. It was really soft and it remarkably reminded Judai of the Kuriboh keychain Johan had given him. Hesitantly, he began to reach out his hand towards the mop of teal hair to test if his theory was true. Unfortunately, Johan suddenly lifted his head, putting a quick stop to that idea.

“Doesn’t it sound like someone’s outside?” Johan asked.

Judai shamelessly let out a small groan, finding himself a little irritated at the interruption. Still, he focused and listened.

“I think it’s Sho and he’s with someone else too.”

Judai swore Johan was blushing slightly as he stood.

“Well, should we go see what they want?” Johan motioned towards the door.

The sudden absence of that comforting warmth by his side made Judai feel slightly cold but at least Johan’s complexion seemed to have improved.

“Only if you’re sure you’re feeling okay,” Judai said.

Johan waved him off and elaborately did a wide, exaggerated stretch with his arms.

“Never felt better! You managed to revive me, Judai!”

Judai couldn’t help but laugh at the other boy’s antics and finally stood up to join him.

“Alright, alright. I get it, but don’t push yourself.”

He then opened the door and led the two of them outside to attempt to tackle the day again.

Notes:

I couldn't help but notice Johan was one of the few students who somehow avoided infirmary time during the first half of season 3 despite dueling quite a bit, so I wanted to address it vaguely. I guess the guy just has impressive levels of duel energy! lol

Chapter Text

“So, if you interpret the kanji in this context, the reason they played that card makes a lot more sense, right?”

Johan smiled and nodded in understanding.

“I think I get it. Thanks, Judai!”

The cafeteria was beginning to get busy as students showed up to grab some breakfast before class. To make more space, Johan reached across the large table and moved some of his papers that he spread out when it had been quieter. Beside him, Judai caught on and began to help too, but they were suddenly interrupted by a loud booming voice.

“I wouldn’t have believed it if I didn’t see it for myself. Breakfast AND studying! I guess Manjoume wasn’t pranking me after all, ” Kenzan exclaimed.

Sho and Manjoume were beside him. The latter had his arms crossed.

“Like I could make this up. I can hardly believe it myself.” Manjoume all but scoffed.

“Hey, guys!” Judai greeted his friends, unfazed by their comments as they walked towards the table in the cafeteria that he and Johan were sitting at. “We were just wrapping up.”

Sho, Kenzan and Manjoume each took a seat across from the two on the other side of the table.

Sho let out a small sigh as he sat down.

“The day’s barely started and you two are already together?”

“Johan’s my best friend, Sho. Of course we’re together a lot,” Judai stated, like it was obvious.

“Yeah, well, even ‘best friends’ don’t act like how you two do,” Sho grumbled.

Judai blinked and looked genuinely puzzled.

"Huh? They don’t?”

“Good morning,” Asuka greeted courteously as she joined everyone. “It’s rare to see Judai up so early, but since the semester started, you two have been here before us almost every morning.”

Judai laughed.

“Well, it’s the only time of day when we can get —”

He was suddenly cut off when a voice called out cheerily from the service counter.

“The cocoa’s nearly ready, Judai.”

“Great! I’ll be right there, thanks,” Judai answered and stood energetically, leaving everyone behind.

As soon as Judai left, Johan couldn’t help but notice how all his friends suddenly shifted their focus and were now staring at him. Asuka was smiling politely but it looked strained and a bit awkward. Kenzan was sporting a legitimate confused expression, which was preferable to the downright grumpy one Sho had, but Manjoume looked particularly pensive, like he was trying to figure something out.

Johan tried to stay poised as he questioned the black clad duelist.

“Something on your mind, Manjoume?” When Manjoume rolled his eyes in annoyance, Johan quickly corrected himself. “Right. Sorry, Manjoume-san.”

Satisfied, Manjoume answered flippantly.

“I’m just trying to understand what the appeal is, that’s all.”

“Umm, I don’t really get what you mean by that?” Johan weakly laughed.

“They’re both so similar to each other,” Kenzan said. “I’m not the only one thinking that, right?”

Before Johan could comment, Judai returned with two mugs of cocoa. One red and one purple. He resumed his seat beside Johan and passed him the purple mug.

“Judai usually always sleeps in and skips out on breakfast entirely, but he hasn’t missed it once since this school year started,” Asuka further noted.

Sho side-eyed them from across the table.

“I wonder what changed,” he commented.

Johan noticed it wasn’t really worded like a question and was more so a statement but completely oblivious, Judai chimed in to answer anyway.

“Well, Johan usually starts his day with a cup of this stuff, so I figured I’d give it a try this year!” He rested his head in his hands as he continued, “Waking up early hasn’t been so bad either. Ruby comes and gets me!”

Johan couldn’t help but notice that Judai’s friends all looked out of sorts again. They were staring at Judai like he was sick or had grown another head.

Johan quickly chimed in. “I had told Judai that back home I always started my day with a cup of coffee, but you guys don’t do that here. He suggested cocoa and the cafeteria only offers it at breakfast, so it just started becoming a thing.”

“The cocoa here is pretty good, actually. It kinda sucks that I didn’t know about it sooner — you guys should try it!” Judai added.

“Are you going to go ask them to make us some too?” Sho sounded annoyed.

Manjoume’s arms remained crossed as he all but ordered, “Yeah, and while you’re at it, make sure my mug is black!”

A thought came to Johan as he observed the somewhat passive aggressive display. He suddenly remembered how Judai had brushed Sho off rather coldly at the start of this whole dis-duel program. Also, in class, Judai only ever sat with Johan even though everyone else was there too. In all these weeks since coming here, he and Judai had been practically inseparable.

Johan wasn’t too sure how close everyone had been before his arrival, but he was beginning to think that things in the friend group had maybe become somewhat unbalanced. Were Judai’s friends upset because Judai had been neglecting them?

Judai laughed awkwardly.

“Uh, I can’t exactly carry that many mugs of cocoa, guys…”

“I can do it.” Johan picked up his mug and stood up suddenly. “I’ll go ask if they can make 4 more.”

“I’ll go with you!”

Judai had responded quickly and when Johan spared a glance, it was easy to see that Judai’s friends all looked a bit exasperated at that reaction.

“It’s okay. It’ll probably take a little while, right? I don’t mind waiting for them to make it and you guys can stay and chat,” Johan offered.

Judai looked like he was going to protest, so to save the situation, Johan turned around without another word. He walked over to the service counter and placed an order for 4 more mugs of cocoa.

After putting the order in, he leaned a little closer towards the attendant on the other side of the counter and smiled sheepishly, awkwardly fidgeting with the purple mug in his hands.

“Hey, is there any chance I could ask for a huge favor?” he whispered.

--

The five friends were all laughing at something silly Kenzan had said when a bright voice called out, “Here’s your order!”

Everyone looked up as the service attendant distributed 4 colorful mugs of cocoa from a tray to the table. Given a certain noticeable absence, no one was all too surprised when Judai spoke up.

“I thought Johan was getting the cocoa. Where did he go?”

“He mentioned that something suddenly came up and asked if I could bring these over to you guys.” Noticing Judai’s expression shift to one of concern, the attendant quickly added, “It didn’t seem like it was anything too serious though, so I wouldn’t worry. Anyway, enjoy your cocoa and I’ll see you tomorrow, Judai!”

There was a noticeable mood shift after the attendant walked away. Only Kenzan was brave enough to try and salvage the atmosphere.

“Hey, Aniki, why don’t we go over some duel strategies after we finish —”

“Sorry, Kenzan,” Judai hurriedly interrupted, “I’m going to go make sure Johan is okay. It’s not like him to leave without saying anything. I think something might be wrong.”

Judai stood before anyone could even say anything. He turned to Hane Kuriboh and nodded.

“You go on ahead. Let me know if you find Ruby!”

With that, he ran off, leaving the other 4 behind.

After a few moments of uncomfortable silence, Manjoume aggressively grabbed his black mug off the table and started walking out of the cafeteria too.

“Where are you going?” Sho called out.

“I’m going to go find Johan first, just to piss Judai off!”

--

Johan had wandered outside and was sitting alone against a pillar on one of the second-floor balconies. It was a beautiful day, and he was enjoying finishing his drink as he absently daydreamed. It was nostalgic to how he used to spend his mornings at North Academia. However, it didn’t feel like he was there for too long before a voice startled him.

“So, you suddenly disappeared because you needed to go sit outside by yourself?” Manjoume called out, seeming grumpy.

Johan watched as Kenzan, Asuka and Sho shortly followed after their friend.

“Don’t be rude. Sometimes people just want to be alone for a bit,” Asuka chimed in.

Manjoume didn't seem moved by that sentiment.

“If that was the case, then maybe he should tell Judai that instead of just vanishing without a word.” When Asuka glared at him, Manjoume turned away looking embarrassed. “You can’t deny it would have saved some trouble, though…”

“Uh, hi, guys,” Johan awkwardly greeted. “I’m sorry, I thought you all would be talking for a bit longer.” He looked around. “Judai’s not with you?”

“Like two peas in a pod, they can’t be separated, ” Kenzan muttered, looking almost comically woeful.

"No, sorry, it’s not like that. I just assumed you would all still be together.” Johan slowly stood, keeping his purple mug in his hand.

“He’s out there somewhere looking for you now, actually,” Sho admitted.

“And it seems like he sent the brown furball after you too, so I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.” Manjoume let out a sigh and took a sip from his own black mug.

“Ah, I see.” Johan laughed awkwardly. He felt unsure how to navigate this conversation, but he tried his best. “Judai can be pretty determined, so I’m sure you’re right about that.”

“You seem to understand Aniki pretty well.” Kenzan crossed his arms and nodded. “It’s probably because you guys are practically the same person,”

Johan shook his head.

“Actually, I don’t think that’s entirely true. Sure, Judai and I have a lot in common and we’re both passionate duelists, but we have our differences too. Our similarities brought us together, but our different strengths are what make us a good team in the end, I think.”

After such an honest admission, the group stayed silent for a moment before Asuka spoke up.

“It probably doesn’t seem like it, but we came to find you to apologize, Johan. We all talked and it wasn’t our intention to make you feel uncomfortable or like you had to leave earlier.” She gave a small smile. “We have never seen Judai so wrapped up in a person before. It’s embarrassing to admit, but we weren’t sure how to navigate that.”

“I want to apologize too. I’m sorry if I’ve been a bit mean.” Sho didn’t make eye contact but he sounded earnest. “I know Aniki gets tunnel vision when he’s passionate about something and I shouldn’t have been taking out my frustration like that.”

Johan regarded everyone and while it was obvious they felt uncomfortable, they did also seem genuine. He walked closer towards them and returned Asuka’s smile.

“I wanted to give you guys some time alone together. I’m sorry I didn’t realize sooner that Judai and I have been acting a bit exclusive,” Johan admitted. “I really like Judai and I sorta find myself getting wrapped up in his energy. When you’re with him, stuff just seems to happen and before you know it, a whole bunch of time has passed!”

The group all found themselves sharing knowing looks and the awkward atmosphere evaporated.

“I think Aniki has good intuition about people,” Kenzan said. “Next time, we’ll just follow his lead and not worry,”

Manjoume looked down at the black mug he was holding.

“There’s no denying you’re a great duelist and you don’t seem like a bad guy, so I guess I somewhat get the appeal now.” He looked off to the side. “You're only here for a year, so you guys just keep doing whatever it is you slackers get up to. We’ll sort our own stuff out.”

Johan tried to make meaningful eye contact.

“Thanks guys, but I would like to get to know you better before the year is over, as well. Maybe we could all try hanging out together some more too?”

“Well, we were going to go talk to Headmaster Samejima after breakfast about these dis-duels,” Asuka said. “They seem to be draining more energy as the days are going on and it’s getting dangerous. Why don’t we all go together?”

“Johan!” a cheerful voice suddenly interjected. “There you are.”

The group all looked towards the source of the interruption and were greeted by an interesting sight. Judai was hanging over one of the balcony rails. He managed to pull himself up so easily that Johan didn’t doubt the other had done this before.

“Hey, Judai!" Johan called out. "Woah, why are there so many leaves in your hair?”

“Huh?” Judai plucked at one of the stray leaves, seeming to think nothing of it. “Once Hane Kuriboh let me know he saw you guys up here, I decided to climb up the tree since it’s faster.”

“Only Aniki could say something like that so casually,” Sho stated and the group all laughed.

Well, most of them did. Manjoume grumbled but he looked more resigned than anything.

“If you’re all going to speak with the Headmaster, you guys can go on ahead. I’ve personally had my fill of these antics for the day.”

He observed the scene playing out before him.

Judai had run over by then and as expected, he went straight to Johan. It strangely resembled a lost puppy who found its way back home. If Judai had a tail, it would be wagging. How Johan seemed to find the other’s shameless fixation with him endearing was beyond Manjoume’s grasp of understanding. He rolled his eyes. It was like those two were always wrapped up in a world of their own. Even though Judai was completely oblivious of that fact, it at least seemed like Johan could be described as somewhat self-aware, so maybe the situation was not completely hopeless…

Judai started instantly asking if the other was alright and wondering why he had left, and Johan just patiently smiled and attempted to reassure him while also trying to gently brush the leaves out of Judai’s hair. Manjoume recoiled and finally opted to walk away. As he left, he took a sip of his cocoa and mumbled to no-one in particular, “Honestly, constantly having to witness this is even more exhausting than the dis-duels.”

I feel like Judai's friends probably had it a bit rough leading up to everything...

Chapter 5: Dreaming

Chapter Text

It was evening and everyone else was mostly sleeping, but Judai found himself wide awake and desperately restless. Ever since arriving in this new dimension with the rest of the school, he’d been holed up in the infirmary recovering from his duel with Cobra while everyone else was busy with getting things sorted as best as they could.

Judai couldn’t help brooding—sitting idle wasn’t like him. He’d much rather be helping everyone. He found himself wondering how they were all doing. Unconsciously, he took out Johan’s Kuriboh keychain for the first time since it was given to him. He stared at the odd eyes. The one that was rubbed off looked somewhat translucent and shiny. He found himself unconsciously petting at the soft fur, much like he had the first time.

Suddenly, a faint red light emerged from the infirmary door and Ruby’s purple face poked through. Judai couldn’t help the big grin that crept onto his face because he knew right away what that meant. Ruby had led Johan here.

Judai’s assumption was well founded because shortly after, Johan’s head also peeked through the door, and he was waving at Judai. Judai went to respond in kind, but Johan was quick to place a finger to his lips and signal for him to be quiet since O’Brien and Manjoume were also resting in the infirmary. He then motioned for Judai to meet him in the hall, a suggestion that Judai was more than happy to go along with. He hadn’t seen Johan all day after the other boy had helped drop Misawa off. Judai tucked the keychain back in his pocket and carefully snuck out.

“So, you finally came to check on me! Weren’t you worried at all?” Judai teased, after they were walking together in the hallway.

Johan must have been feeling tired because he didn’t take the bait and tease back this time. Instead, his eyes just glimmered honestly as he responded, "No, not really.”

Judai found that answer disappointing for a couple of reasons and it showed. Johan laughed at the reaction, rubbing salt on the wound.

“Don’t be like that,” Johan gently chided his friend for sulking. “I knew you’d be fine, Judai. You can take care of yourself, so why would I worry?”

He then patted Judai on the back like one would a child. That didn’t really make Judai feel any better and maybe he was acting a little childish, but still, he didn’t want to let it go just yet.

“I dunno, you could at least say you were worried a little bit, maybe?”

“Hey, I knew you were safe, so that’s what matters!” Johan moved his arm to wrap it around Judai. “And while I wasn’t worried about you, I did miss you. That’s why I’m here after all.”

Johan looked so earnest that Judai couldn’t help finally smiling in return and he allowed himself to relax in Johan’s hold.

“Alright, fine but I’m not going to say ‘I miss you’, too.”

“It’s okay, you don’t have to say it.” Johan finally sported his usual teasing grin. “I mean, it’s pretty obvious you missed me, judging by how you’re acting.”

Judai lightly shoved him but didn’t deny it.

“Yeah, yeah…so, where are we going anyway?”

“You’re seriously going to ask me that? I still don’t know how to get back to the Obelisk Blue dorms after class and it’s been a few months now.” Johan laughed.

“Not like that matters. I always make sure you get there just fine,” Judai pointed out with a grin. “But you’re right, I suppose I should be asking Ruby where she’s taking us.”

Hane Kuriboh and Ruby were up ahead, and their respective duelists had been blindly following them while they chatted. Judai assumed they were being led back to the gym, but the duel spirits seemed to have a different idea, and they shortly found themselves in the cafeteria. The tables and chairs had all been moved to use as barricades, so the area was strangely open and empty. However, as if realizing where they were, Judai’s stomach let out a loud growl.

Johan instantly walked towards the kitchen.

“Makes sense you’d be hungry. Hold on a sec.”

Judai looked around and opted to sit on the floor near the service counter. He crossed his legs and leaned against the wall while he waited. After a few minutes, Johan returned with a familiar colorful mug in each hand and a sleeve of what looked like biscuits dangling from his mouth. He passed the red mug to Judai and tore open the plastic before placing the biscuits down in front of them.

“The power’s out so I had to make cocoa on ice,” Johan explained as he went to take a sip out of his own purple mug.

“I’ll drink anything.” Judai happily took the red mug. A thought came to him as he took a surprisingly delicious sip. “Hey, is it okay that we’re taking this stuff?”

“Everyone took inventory, but I think we’ll be okay to sneak a little this one time. You didn’t eat your portion at dinner so we can count this towards that.”

Johan winked and put a finger to his lips, like it would be their secret.

Judai nodded eagerly and winked back.

“That works for me.”

The two chatted more and Johan filled Judai in on what he had missed. As time went on and the two continued to sip their cocoa, Judai eventually couldn’t hold it in any longer and he let a yawn escape. Hane Kuriboh broke away from where he had been lying with Ruby and chirped earnestly. Johan nodded in agreement.

“I think Hane Kuriboh has the right idea. You should probably go back to the infirmary and rest.”

“I’m fine." Judai waved them off. “You’re still up too. When do you plan to go to sleep?”

Johan crossed his arms and seemed to be going over a checklist in his mind.

“Hmm, I’m supposed to go do a head count at some point and then join Jim on an evening patrol of the perimeter, but maybe after that? We’ll see how the night goes.”

Judai realized then that Johan seemed to be pretty busy. He estimated the two of them had been hanging out for a little over an hour now, so that meant Johan was using his limited down time to hang out with Judai when he probably should have been using it to relax or get some sleep. Judai felt a twinge of embarrassment for how childish he had been acting earlier, but he also felt a twinge of something else when he remembered that Johan had said he went to find Judai because he had missed him. Time was especially precious right now, and Judai felt grateful Johan wanted to spend his time with him. Judai smiled tenderly and placed a hand on Johan’s shoulder.

“Okay, but you need to rest too. You shouldn’t overwork yourself or you might get sick.” Judai stopped that train of thought there, remembering that Johan didn’t like to be coddled. “I mean, you’re a really reliable guy but you’re also always so…so…”

He was stuck on what word to use so Ruby chimed in, and this time, Judai was the one agreeing with a duel spirit.

“Yeah, that’s it! You’re always so selfless.”

“I can’t tell if that’s a compliment or not.” Johan looked genuinely unsure.

“It’s not always a horrible thing, but you do seem to consider other people before considering yourself. Even your dream is selfless. Helping humans and duel spirits build meaningful relationships with one another isn’t something you’re doing for yourself, since you can see spirits already.”

"I guess, but I never looked at it like making a sacrifice or being selfless. Since I have this gift and it’s something within my power, I feel I should use it to do what I can to help others. There are lots of people who can’t see or speak to duel spirits, and I want to try and be a bridge that can bring everyone together.”

Judai paused and thought about what Johan had just said. In the duel with Geise Trapper, Johan had also expressed his passion for his dream and Judai had been moved. It was very admirable and Johan’s determination was inspiring. Judai found himself feeling in awe again at Johan’s conviction. He awkwardly plucked at a loose string of red thread from his jacket as he pondered.

“Well, when you say it like that, I guess I could also technically help others that way, since I can see and speak with spirits too,” Judai said.

“Even though you have the same gift, how you want to use it is up to you. I’m pursuing this dream through dueling because I want to,” Johan pointed out. “But for what it’s worth, I do think you’d be good at it.”

“Well, thanks but I wouldn’t want to budge-in on your dream.” Judai laughed nervously.

Johan looked at Judai and shook his head resolutely. He smiled brightly and it reached his eyes.

“I wouldn’t look at it like that. The more people there are working towards the same dream, the more likely it’ll happen.”

“Yeah, I guess that’s true.”

Judai hadn’t really thought of it that way. The fact Johan has such a grand dream, a deeply rooted reason for dueling, initially highlighted to Judai the places where he felt he was lacking. It only recently occurred to him that he could take inspiration from Johan and use that to fuel his own motivations. The thought of dueling together and pursuing a similar dream did make his own burdens feel a lot less heavy. However, Judai still wanted to take more time to determine what his own dreams were.

Seeing the faraway look in his eyes, Johan spoke up.

“You’ll figure it out in time, so don’t stress too much about it. Besides, we have enough on our plates.” Johan’s brow furrowed as he looked out the window at the vast, desolate landscape. “My only dream right now is to get everyone back home.”

“That’s a dream I can commit to supporting on the spot. I’ll help however I can.”

Johan gave a small smile as he started wrapping up the rest of the biscuits they didn’t eat.

“Great, then I look forward to working with you! There’s no one else I’d rather have by my side after all, dueling or otherwise.”

Judai felt a warmth in his chest and a spike of excited energy pulse through his veins. Johan always had a way of making him feel reassured and motivated when he was feeling anxious or upset. Sometimes, it really did feel like the two of them could take on anything together. Judai found it immensely special, having someone he could rely on like that. He couldn’t help himself and he flopped over into Johan.

Johan stopped his tidying when he suddenly felt a heavy weight on his right side. Glancing over, he was met with a mop of brown hair.

"Hey, are you feeling alright?”

“I’m a bit tired but I also don’t want to leave yet.”

Johan put down his mug and slowly put an arm around Judai. When Judai didn’t seem to mind, he pulled him in closer so that Judai was resting more comfortably against Johan’s chest.

“Yeah, me neither,” Johan admitted.

Judai allowed himself to nuzzle in a little, and he gave a resolute nod.

“Good, because this is too comfortable.”

As the two cuddled close, Judai could hear Johan’s heartbeat. It was somewhat fast but also steady and he found the rhythm soothing. As Judai closed his eyes, he decided that for now, he would selfishly dream by Johan’s side for as long as he could.

Chapter 6: Urgency

Chapter Text

“I know if we make too much noise moving around, the zombies will hear us, but how long do you think we should wait for?” Judai asked in a hushed voice.

Johan considered the question seriously.

“Probably not too long, but it’s hard to know for sure. We’ll just have to go for it when we feel ready.”

O’Brien had courageously left to lead a hoard of duel zombies away so that Judai and Johan could get into the air ducts. Now, the two students found themselves crouching in the tight ventilation shaft waiting for a safe moment to keep moving. Unfortunately, another group of zombies had shown up not long after O’Brien baited the first group to chase after him. Johan mentally noted with concern that the number of students turning into zombies had been rapidly increasing. He spared a glance down and saw that a group of about five were situated right at the end of the hall from them. Crawling around in the vents was noisy and would draw unwanted attention, so they unfortunately found themselves without much choice but to sit and wait.

Johan could practically feel Judai buzzing beside him.

“Hey, it’ll be alright. I don’t think we’ll have to wait too much longer.” He tried to reassure Judai in as quiet a voice as he could manage.

Judai looked as frazzled as he sounded.

“I know but Rei needs this medicine now. Every second we waste sitting here is a second we could be using to get to her.”

“That’s true but it’s important to assess the situation and weigh out your options before going forward. Time may be limited, but you should use what you have smartly. It’s not always good to rush into things.”

“I don’t get why,” Judai grumbled. “That’s how I’ve always done things and it usually works out.”

Johan sighed. Judai’s immaturity could be an endearing trait but sometimes it was a detriment. Before he got too annoyed, Johan reminded himself that Judai did just find out two of his good friends had been transformed into duel zombies. It would be hard on anyone to come to terms with that, and despite feeling somewhat exasperated and stressed out himself, Johan knew it was best to be patient and to keep a level head.

“Well, I’m glad that strategy hasn’t caused any issues for you so far, but it’s bound to, someday,” Johan gently chided as he motioned to the opening of the vent where the zombies were still lingering. “In this case, we don’t want to accidentally lead a horde of zombies to Professor Ayukawa and Rei, right? That would only put everyone in even more danger, so it’s better to wait this time.”

Judai looked a little guilt-ridden and Johan couldn’t help the twinge in his heart. He placed a comforting hand on Judai’s shoulder and gave a small smile when he noticed the action had its desired effect. Judai’s shoulders tensed a little less and he seemed to be listening still, so Johan continued.

“We’ll rescue Rei and eventually everyone else too. Trust me, okay?”

Johan could only hope he looked as determined as he sounded. He apparently had nothing to worry about, however, because suddenly, he found himself enveloped in a strong hug.

“I trust you,” Judai firmly admitted as he rested his forehead on Johan’s shoulder. “More than anyone.”

Johan wrapped his arms around Judai’s shoulders, returning the embrace equally as tight. The weight of those words were not lost on him.

“I trust you too, Judai, but try not to carry too much on your shoulders.” He allowed himself to nuzzle a little into Judai’s hair. “Let’s take it one situation at a time, okay?”

Judai slowly nodded.

“I’m sorry I’ve been so stressed out. Usually, I’m calmer than this.” Judai slowly pulled away from the embrace. “I feel like I’ve been relying on you too much.”

“It’s alright, I want you to be able to rely on me.” Johan looked Judai in the eye. “Just know that I’m relying on you too, and you’ve more than proven to me that I can do that.”

Judai had kept his hands on Johan’s forearms, and he firmly gripped them.

“You say that, but I don’t think you’ve given me many opportunities to return the favor.”

“Nope, not true,” Johan quickly responded. “I was in a tough spot with Giese Trapper and who was it that literally flew in and rescued me? And when we were trapped in that submarine just earlier today, who was responsible for getting us out?”

Before Judai could interject, Johan added, “When I nearly passed out from that dis-duel at the beach, who practically carried me back to their dorm room and let me rest there with them?”

Judai gave a small smile at that memory.

“Alright, fine,” he relented.

Johan held Judai’s hands in his, a form of affection the two had been doing more often lately.

“I’ve said this before, but you’ve always been there for everyone, and for me. I’m more than happy to be there for you too. We can take on anything together.”

The two stared at each other deeply. Even though there was minimal light, the newly unclouded shine in Judai’s eyes was mesmerizing. Johan found that the two of them seemed to be leaning in closer, because he could suddenly feel Judai’s shallow breaths on his face. If Johan leaned in just a little more, their lips would brush, but before Johan could act on it, the sound of the student zombies down below forced them to pull away.

Glancing down, Johan noticed the horde that had been lingering by the end of the hall were now making their way past them and over towards where O’Brien had led the others. He smiled and in a hushed voice, explained, “Once they turn that corner, we should be good to go.”

Judai steeled his gaze and whispered back.

“Great, let me know once they do that and then we’ll make a dash for it.”

Judai picked up the medicine case, and with his other hand, reached out for Johan’s. Johan briefly squeezed Judai’s hand back before giving a firm nod, signaling it was time to go. Reassured, the two then began to crawl further into the vent, and deeper into the darkness.

Chapter 7: Whatever It Takes

Notes:

This is a new chapter added in April 2025 as part of the rewrite project. I hope you enjoy! ✨

Chapter Text

Johan had more than enough space to himself, but he could still hear a few other students snoring nearby. He tried ignoring it, turning over to lay on his back and closing his eyes, but no matter how much he willed it, he just didn’t feel tired. As Johan laid on his makeshift bed, he found it impossible to sleep. He kept staring at the ceiling with a million different thoughts going through his mind.

After finding out Rainbow Dragon was necessary for getting everyone back to their original dimension, they had to wait until the lithograph was found so Pegasus could create the card. Until Rainbow Dragon’s card could be sent to them from back home, the main focus was keeping everyone else who wasn’t infected safe, but it was becoming a daunting task. They had been stuck in this strange dimension for nearly a week and in that time, the majority of the students and staff had been turned into zombies. They had created a well barricaded space so the remaining students could sleep relatively easily, but to be extra safe, Jim, O’Brien, Judai and Johan all took turns patrolling so they could keep track of where the zombies were. The other three were gone doing just that, but after seeing the bruises Johan obtained when he had protected Rei from falling debris earlier, O’Brien had insisted Johan should stay behind and rest.

As Johan reflected on the events of the day, he naturally ended up thinking about someone in particular. He couldn’t help but wonder where Judai was and how he was doing. Johan knew Judai was more than capable as a duelist, so he wasn’t too worried from that perspective, but Judai had also had a pretty physically taxing day. The duel with Professor Ayukawa had been tense, and then both Johan and Judai had been thrown quite aggressively into a wall after an unexpected explosion.

Johan had technically rested for a couple of hours by this point. He figured he could go see if Judai wanted to swap-out and maybe take a break.

Johan sat up and Ruby quickly climbed up his back before perching herself on his shoulder. Then, Johan carefully snuck out through one of the barricaded doors, trying his best not to disturb anyone. Once they were in the hallway and at risk of running into duel zombies, Ruby twittered her concern. Johan looked at her and nodded in agreement.

“Good idea. It’s been pretty dangerous. I’ll summon Amethyst Cat and Topaz Tiger just in case. They can help us find Judai.”

Johan placed the two cards on his duel disk and expended some energy to summon the them. Within moments, Johan had one big cat on either side of him. Ruby moved from his shoulder and went to Amethyst Cat’s side. The pink duel spirit nodded once and then looked up at Johan.

“Ruby says that Judai is with Jim but they’re on the other side of the building. She can tell because Hane Kuriboh is with them.”

“Great!” Johan said. “Let’s start heading that way then.”

On his right, Topaz Tiger let out a lazy yawn before chiming in. Ever blunt, he didn’t mince his words.

“We don’t know how to get all the way over there, and if you’re leading the way, we’ll definitely get lost,” he pointed out. “Besides, didn’t you already bother Judai the other night?”

“I wasn’t bothering him...” Johan murmured, pouting.

Amethyst Cat smiled knowingly.

“Based on what you shared with us, it seems like he was quite pleased to see you.”

Johan hadn’t shared everything with the Gem Beasts but he did gush with them a little. His crush on his best friend was no secret as far as his family was concerned. Johan felt his face heat up when he thought about that night. He and Judai had snuggled in close. Neither of them wanted to leave and Judai had even said it explicitly. Then, this morning while they were hiding out in the air ducts, Johan was pretty sure they were mere seconds away from sharing a kiss. In fact, if they hadn’t been interrupted, Johan probably would have gone for it.

Johan’s heart started beating faster in his chest the more he thought about that moment in particular.

Topaz Tiger gently nudged his hand, snapping Johan out of his daydreaming. He reached out and scratched behind the tiger’s ears.

“You must be really smitten with Judai if just thinking about him makes your face go red like that,” Topaz Tiger said as he leaned in closer to Johan’s touch.

Johan gave a shy smile, and now that he was made aware of it, he couldn’t help but notice how warm his face felt given the intensity of his blush. Still, instead of feeling embarrassed, he only found himself feeling elated and giddy as he admitted, “Yeah, I like him a lot.”

With no proper destination in mind, Johan began walking anyway. The place he was going didn’t matter, he just needed to move and shake off some restless energy.

“You should tell him how you feel,” Amethyst Cat suggested, staying close by her duelist's side. “Given how you two have been acting with one another, I think it would go well.”

Johan smiled at her optimism and in his heart, he knew he agreed with her. He had developed a crush on Judai pretty quickly after the two of them began spending time together, but he had needed more time to confirm if Judai maybe felt the same. Now, he had seen enough clues to guess that Judai might return his affections but unfortunately, the situation they found themselves in added a layer of complexity to everything.

“I’m not sure if now is the best time,” Johan said. “You have to admit it’s been really crazy lately.”

“Why should that affect anything? Since coming to Duel Academia, something crazy has happened almost every day,” Amethyst Cat countered.

Johan had to laugh a little at that. It was true that his time at Duel Academia had been a rush of one strange event after the other. Finding time for quiet moments was proving to be rare.

“I should wait until we’re back home. There are too many uncertainties right now and I don’t want to burden him with my feelings.” Johan fidgeted with the hem of his sleeve. “Everyone else really relies on Judai and that’s even more so the case now that we’re in this situation. There’s probably enough on his mind already.”

“Telling him how you feel could help ease some of his burdens. Maybe he’s thinking about it too,” Topaz Tiger offered. “And isn’t it generally nice to feel relied upon?”

“Sometimes, but I don’t think Judai feels that way right now. He’s overwhelmed. There has been a lot of pressure on his shoulders,” Johan explained. “I wish I could do something more to help.”

Amethyst Cat rubbed against Johan’s thigh lightly in a show of comfort.

“Don’t put too much pressure on yourself either. You have been doing plenty and there are some things only Judai can do,” she said.

Johan stared down the long, dark hallway in front of them. Ruby had left to go scout ahead and occasionally, he could see her bright red tail shining a faint light.

“But there are things only I can do too.” Johan was determined. “I know once we find Rainbow Dragon, we can get everyone home and then this will all be over.”

Topaz Tiger looked up with a contemplative stare.

“That scientist said it was possible, but do you believe Rainbow Dragon will actually be able to get us all back?”

Amethyst Cat reached over and swatted him in annoyance. She looked ready to say something but Johan beat her to it.

“I do,” Johan said, voice unwavering. “I’ll need to be able to awaken that power, but I know we can do it together.”

“Yes, exactly,” Amethyst Cat agreed. She looked over at Johan with a seriousness in her eyes. “But the cost to awaken such a power could be great.”

“I’m not worried about the cost. If it’s to save Judai and everyone else, I’d do it,” Johan said with resolve.

Topaz Tiger let out a small growl and gave a resolute nod.

“Your dream is to save everyone and of course, we’ll support you no matter what!”

Amethyst Cat nodded as well.

“Whatever your dream is Johan, we will always stand by you.”

Johan felt his heart swell in adoration for his family. Ever since meeting them, Johan had experienced nothing short of unconditional love. It was something that had been missing from his life for so long but everyday, the Gem Beasts continued to surprise him with their support.

“Thank you,” he said with deep sincerity.

Suddenly, Johan curiously saw Ruby’s red light flicker as though she were suspended in the air. It spun around and then there was the sound of a scuffle. Johan looked at the other two Gem Beasts and they nodded before all of them sprinted towards her direction. As they got closer, Johan heard Judai’s voice before he properly saw him.

“Johan!”

“Judai!” he answered easily.

Johan met Judai halfway and that’s when he noticed the sight from earlier had just been Ruby and Hane Kuriboh in the midst of another midair scuffle. The two spirits stopped and followed after Judai once he ran over.

Judai was quick to look Johan up and down.

“Shouldn’t you be resting? How are your bruises?”

“I’m alright, but how are you holding up?”

Judai laughed.

“Why are you asking me that? I’m fine!” It was dark and hard to tell for certain, but Johan swore he saw a light blush dusting Judai’s cheeks. He looked a little embarrassed but happy when he added, “I’m glad you’re alright, though. I was thinking about you.”

“I was thinking about you too.”

They smiled at one another, blushes gracing both their faces. Judai didn’t hesitate when he took Johan’s hand in his and gripped tight.

“It’s dark and I don’t want you to get lost,” he explained. “I’ll take us to where Jim is.”

When Johan saw that bright smile and felt the warmth of Judai’s hand holding his own, it made his conviction grow.

Johan’s heart was filled with determination to protect this precious feeling—to protect Judai.

Chapter 8: Irreplaceable

Chapter Text

“He did what?!”

“Easy, Judai. There’s no reason to be so shocked by it. Johan’s a capable guy, he can handle a perimeter check by himself,” Jim said, as he looked up from the box of supplies he had been organizing.

Jim’s words did little to reassure him.

“I know that, but there are zombies everywhere and it’s more dangerous than it was before. There’s only a handful of us left who aren’t infected.”

“That’s true,” Jim began before impishly smirking. “However, I can’t help but notice that you didn’t care at all when I went on a perimeter check alone earlier. I have to admit that I’m feeling a bit wounded.”

Not in the mood to banter, Judai ignored the light attempt at teasing.

“The other night, Johan couldn’t even find his way back without my help, so he’s probably lost right now. He shouldn’t go out alone.”

Jim crossed his arms and hummed before answering.

“Ah, didn’t he tell us this morning that Ruby has become pretty adept with guiding him around the building now?” When Judai looked stuck on what to say to that, Jim pressed on, feigning ignorance. “I wonder why you could possibly be so worked up then?”

Judai suddenly felt silly trying to explain himself any further. He quickly clipped the discussion, deciding action was the better option.

“A-Anyway, I’m just worried, that’s all. I’m going to go find him.”

Judai elaborated no further and headed for the exit. Jim couldn’t help whistling after him.

“Look who's acting all protective. Johan’s a lucky guy!”

Judai uncharacteristically found himself feeling a bit irritated. He was finding it annoying that Jim wasn’t taking this situation seriously enough, but he was also a little embarrassed at what his friend was insinuating. Judai was naïve, sure, but even he wasn’t that naïve.

Since coming to this dimension, Judai had been thinking a lot more critically about his relationship with Johan and if there was a better way to define it. There was no denying that Johan was his best friend, but even Judai had to admit that as time went on, it felt like their connection was starting to morph into something more. Johan’s smile, laugh, touch and general presence were doing things to Judai that he was formerly unfamiliar with.

He liked being with Johan, but he also liked holding and being held by Johan. They were often together, but Judai found himself feeling greatly wistful and lonely when they weren’t. Judai also had to admit that Johan’s well-being seemed to be at the forefront of his mind most of the time, the force of which couldn’t be compared to anything else Judai cared about, except maybe dueling. Judai assumed these strong feelings meant something deeper, but he didn’t want to rush into anything. He often found himself speculating that maybe Johan was feeling the same way and, like everything else they took on, he wondered if they could possibly navigate it together. However, there had been so much going on lately that there hadn’t been much time to talk about it properly.

Judai could still hear Jim laughing behind him and his face flushed. Still, he wasted no time in asking Hane Kuriboh to fly on ahead. The duel spirit agreed eagerly, matching his partner’s mood.

The two had often arranged to meet up at various places on campus, and Judai was quick to realize that if Johan didn’t have a knowledgeable guide, he was guaranteed to get turned around and lost. Thankfully, Ruby and Hane Kuriboh were very adept at finding each other so if needed, the two students could find each other by proxy.

It took some time but eventually, Hane Kuriboh led Judai to one of the staff rooms. When Judai opened the door, the sight of Johan passed out on one of the couches, had him sprinting over faster than he ever thought possible. His mind was racing.

Why is he like that? Is he hurt!? What happened!?

Suddenly, a small snore came from the other, interrupting those intrusive thoughts and Judai instantly felt a bit light-headed.

“Oh, Johan,” he whispered in exasperation but also relief.

Hane Kuriboh had already curled up with Ruby, and the latter waved her tail at Judai in a signal for him to keep quiet. Judai had to admit that the timing of this nap wasn’t a great one, but he also knew Johan hadn’t been getting much sleep. Their days were filled with danger, hardly affording any time to catch a breath. Then, every night they had to take turns patrolling different areas of the campus building. Judai frowned slightly before taking off his red jacket and laying it gently over his best friend. If it meant Johan could get some rest, then maybe he could watch over him for a bit.

Johan looked peaceful as he slept, and Judai couldn’t help letting out another sigh as he carefully sat down next to him. The situation was only getting more and more dangerous. It was a small miracle neither he nor Johan had turned into zombies yet. The thought made his mind race and he found himself reaching into his pocket and taking out the small Kuriboh keychain. He had just started petting it when there was a stirring motion beside him.

“Oh, hey,” Johan greeted somewhat sleepily, rubbing his eyes as he woke up.

“Hey,” Judai softly answered. He couldn’t help the fond smile as he patted his lap, offering it to Johan. “You can keep resting for a bit if you want. We have some down time for once, and you seem like you need it.”

Johan took him up on the offer easily and shimmied down to rest his head in Judai's lap.

“Sorry I dozed off,” he slurred, still half asleep. He began to close his eyes again but when he came face-to-face with a familiar fuzzy keychain, Johan ended up poking at it instead. “Oh, I thought you told me you weren’t the anxious type?”

“Hey, that’s not fair.” Judai defended himself as he put the keychain back in his pocket. “I got worried after I noticed you were gone, and that worry only doubled when Jim let me know you had gone out to patrol alone. When I saw you passed out on the couch, I almost had a heart attack until I realized you were only sleeping. There are a lot of zombies wandering around now. What if some came in while you were laying out in the open like that? It’s dangerous!”

As Judai prattled on, he found himself unconsciously carding his fingers through Johan’s hair, near mimicking the motion he had been doing with the keychain moments before.

Johan didn’t seem to mind that and kept his head in Judai’s lap, but he did look a little taken aback at Judai’s commentary. He seemed to decide that it was a bit funny that Judai, of all people, was sitting here trying to scold him.

“I’m never 100% alone though, Judai,” he said after Judai had stopped speaking. “My family is always watching over me.”

To back up that statement, Ruby raised her tail and nodded resolutely. If anyone tried to harm Johan, they would have to go through the Gem Beasts first.

Judai’s fingers stilled for a moment, and he stammered slightly.

“O-oh, yeah. No, of course they are. I knew that…”

Judai was a little embarrassed that he had gotten somewhat ahead of himself, but Johan gave him a genuine smile before closing his eyes again and turning more comfortably on his side as he carried the conversation along.

“You always manage to find me though, no matter where I end up. It’s really impressive.”

Judai beamed, a big grin gracing his face.

“Yeah, of course I do. I have a very helpful ‘Johan-detector’, so I can’t take all the credit.” Judai motioned towards Hane Kuriboh. “So I'll always be able to find you, no matter where you are.”

“Hmm,” Johan hummed, already seeming to drift back to sleep.

Judai let him and mindlessly kept playing with the others' hair, enjoying the rare respite they’d been given. Time ticked by and Judai reluctantly decided to wake Johan up after Hane Kuriboh gently reminded him that they should probably start heading back. Judai chanced brushing Johan’s cheek with the back of his hand. The gesture seemed to work, since Johan's long lashes began to flutter as he started to rouse awake. Judai smiled warmly.

“Sorry, Johan, but Jim had noticed I left so we should probably get back soon or he might worry.”

Johan groaned, as he slowly sat up, carefully removing himself from the comfort of Judai’s lap.

“If we have to, I guess.”

Judai had to try hard to suppress a laugh. All the fiddling he had been doing with Johan’s hair made for quite the image, now. Pieces were sticking out everywhere in funny tufts on one side.

Johan rubbed at his own arms, apparently still cold, and he unconsciously readjusted Judai’s jacket that he had been using as a makeshift blanket so that it now sat on his own shoulders. He pulled it closer around himself and yawned, eyes semi-closed. He rubbed at his hair, trying to smooth it out. Judai was suddenly reminded of the image of a sleepy Pharaoh, the campus cat, grooming himself.

Judai couldn’t hold back a laugh anymore when he noticed a particularly stubborn piece was still sticking out strangely, despite Johan’s best efforts.

“Here, let me fix that one,” he offered.

Johan finally opened his eyes all the way as the other tucked the piece of hair behind his ear.

“Thanks, Judai. My hair is always such a mess, sometimes I feel like just chopping it all off and trying out something shorter.”

Johan gave a small, lighthearted laugh, but Judai didn’t find that particular joke funny.

“Don’t do that!” Judai exclaimed. “I mean, I really like your hair. It’s so soft, and the color is really stunning. It’s beautiful!”

Johan was sporting a deep blush that was hard to ignore. He was almost as red as Judai’s jacket that he was wearing. He tugged awkwardly at one of the longer pieces of teal hair near his neck.

“T-thanks for liking my hair so much,” Johan stuttered somewhat lamely, and Judai instantly panicked, misreading the situation.

“I like the rest of you too—not only your hair! Your eyes crinkle up in this really cute way when you laugh, and your voice is so comforting, I could probably fall asleep listening to you, not that I would!” Judai ended up rambling on, only digging himself deeper in a hole. “Uh, I’m sorry, I don’t know why I’m saying all this but I guess I just want you to understand that—”

Judai froze when a pair of slightly chapped lips connected with his own. The kiss was soft, chaste, and over so quickly that Judai wouldn’t have been sure it had happened at all if not for the slight tingling sensation he still felt on his lips. For a moment, he swore his brain had short circuited.

After Johan pulled away, he didn’t look bashful anymore but determined. A slight blush was still dusting his face but other than that, he looked much like he did at the start of a duel. Judai knew the expression quite well, but this time it made his stomach flip in a way it never had before.

Johan had played his hand and was now waiting for Judai to play his, and the counter Judai wanted to make was an easy decision. He leaned back in and captured Johan’s lips in a second, more resolute kiss. Both were inexperienced, so when Judai’s hand went up as if wanting to reach for something but stalled, Johan grabbed it clumsily with his own and intertwined their fingers.

When the two pulled away this time, both were shyly grinning. The kiss wasn’t perfect, but it was still exhilarating. They let their foreheads rest against each other. Judai gazed into Johan’s eyes and Johan's blush deepened once more as he spoke up.

“I have to admit that I’ve been wanting to do that for awhile but I wasn’t sure how you’d feel about it.”

“What made you decide to do it now?” Judai asked.

“What you said sounded kind of like a confession to me. Or at the very least, as close to one that I’ve ever heard.” Johan pulled away slightly and let out a small sigh before continuing. “You can be so earnest sometimes, it catches me off guard. Going on about how much you like my eyes and my voice, I needed to stop you somehow!”

“Hey, if that’s what happens when I compliment you, I’ll just have to be sure to do it more often.” Judai snickered.

Johan playfully shoved him before finally opting to stand up. Judai looked up at him, a complicated expression on his face.

“So, we should probably talk about this, right?”

“Hmm? What do you want to talk about?” Johan raised an eyebrow, still smiling.

Judai’s mouth hung open slightly, unsure if Johan was teasing or not in this case. He couldn’t bring himself to say the words he wanted so he gave a shy grin instead, looking away.

“I think we can keep going about things as we have been, don’t you?” Johan suggested.

Johan’s expression was warm and terribly fond. It made Judai want to pull him in close again but he settled on reaching for Johan’s hand.

“Yeah, I’d like that but I kinda want to talk about it too. I mean, if I hadn’t met you, I don’t know if I would have ever felt this way about someone. It’s been a lot and I want to talk about it with you.”

“Sure, we can do that, but I think we should wait until everyone is back home safe and sound. Anything could happen and if we want to talk properly, we should do it when we have more time and less to worry about, right?”

“Yeah, I did think about that too,” Judai admitted, keeping his hand in Johan’s as he stood up as well.

Johan gave a firm nod, leaving it at that, and the two finally started to leave. Ruby and Hane Kuriboh happily led the way, prancing around their feet occasionally as they did.

“Oh, wait! I should give this back to you first!” Johan went to remove the bright red jacket from his shoulders and return it to its proper owner.

“No, you should keep it for now; you seem chilly. Besides, I think it looks good on you.” Judai tugged at one of the red sleeves playfully. “You know, you should really reconsider officially switching dorms when we get back. Osiris Red suits you better; you belong there instead.”

“Because that’s where you are?” Johan playfully bumped into him with his hip and Judai laughed.

“That’s not the only reason.” Judai bumped him back. “I do think you’d look good in your own red jacket. Or vest, if you prefer that. Then we’d match!”

Johan smiled before removing the jacket and placing it on Judai’s shoulders.

“Well, despite that, I should still give this one back. No matter what you say, red will always look best on you.” He winked and took Judai’s hand in his once more.

Judai wasn’t sure if Johan had been referring to his Osiris Red jacket or the permanent red flush that was gracing his face this evening. Maybe both.

“I want to get home even sooner now.” Judai laughed cheekily, leaning slightly closer into Johan as they walked back to the gym, hand-in-hand.

“I can’t explain why, but I have a feeling you won’t have to wait too much longer.”

The thought of being back on the island and resuming their usual routine but now with this added layer to their relationship only made Judai’s heart soar. He couldn’t help the energetic hop in his step. He gripped Johan’s hand a little tighter and lightly swung their arms back and forth. His eyes twinkled with sparks of affection and excitement for the future.

“Good, I can’t wait!” Judai said. “Don’t leave me hanging for too long, okay?”

Johan’s eyes met Judai’s with equal affection, but he strangely didn’t promise anything this time.

Later, once he was back on the island and lost in the depths of his own grief, Judai would reflect and wonder if by that point, Johan had already steeled his heart for the possibility of what was to come. For what sacrifices might have to be made.

If Judai had known this would be their last night together...

He would have let Johan sleep in his lap longer.

He would have leaned in for more kisses.

He would have talked about all the things he wanted to talk to Johan about.

He would have taken the other’s hand and forced them to run far away from here.

But no matter where they ran to, fate would have surely come after them...

Because fate had always been somewhat cruel to Yuki Judai.

He just didn’t remember.

Chapter Text

Whenever Judai closed his eyes, he was always haunted by the same memories.

Green eyes, tenderly gazing at him.

Soft teal hair that tickled his fingertips.

A laugh so bright it lit up a whole room.

A confidence so unwavering that it was contagious.

How could all of that just be gone?

How could a light that shone so brightly only moments before, be snuffed out in an instant?

And now, what remains?

A Kuriboh keychain that still needed to be reunited with its owner.

A flower crown that had long since wilted.

A purple mug that sat cold and empty.

A dorm room that was now much too quiet.

And hands, after learning the warmth that comes from holding someone, could now only painfully grasp at nothing.

Judai felt denial. He felt guilt. He felt empty.

Once they realized what had happened, some of his friends rallied and tried to comfort him but when Judai couldn’t take it anymore, he slipped away and locked himself in his dorm room. It was too much, and he couldn’t stand hearing any of it. How could there be any comfort to be had?

The only person who Judai felt he truly understood and who understood him in return, was now gone.

It was all his fault.

He didn’t expect any of the others to comprehend the depth of his grief. How could they? They didn’t know why this happened.

But Judai knew.

Everything that happened was because of him. Yubel’s obsession with Judai caused Johan to sacrifice himself.

He was to blame.

Judai wasn’t often one for tears, but he couldn’t stop them now as they silently fell. Regret was a heavy burden, and this was a burden he couldn’t share with anyone. It was lonely and he felt helpless. He buried his face in his pillow as Hane Kuriboh flew over, worried.

Judai acknowledged his spirit partner’s presence.

“You could always find him; can’t you find him now? Can’t you take me to him? He can’t be gone. He can’t be…”

Hane Kuriboh also had tears in his eyes as he determinedly gave a strong chirp, assuring his partner that he would go search the entire island for a trace of anything.

As the day went on, people came to knock on Judai’s door but left after receiving no response. Judai didn’t have the energy to speak with them.

After hours had passed in this way, night finally fell, and the day ended with Judai never setting foot outside his room.

He was too wrapped up in recalling all the moments he spent with Johan in achingly sharp detail. Moments that seemed to have been leading to something…something that was going to be so great that Judai could hardly wait to see what it would have looked like.

Now, it was as if those memories sat stagnant, stuck on repeat, never amounting to anything. Everything that was to come had just been abandoned so abruptly, and the gaping hole it left was too large to imagine it ever being filled again. Johan disappeared and Judai had been left behind. The thought was indescribably painful.

Judai refused to accept that he could no longer experience what would have been—what should have been. Johan couldn’t be gone, it was impossible. He let the thoughts fester, consuming him.

When Hane Kuriboh returned that evening and reported that he had found a rift that led to another dimension and that it might take them to where Johan could be, Judai didn’t even pause to think about the possible repercussions.

Judai knew the rift could take him anywhere, but he was willing to take that chance that it would take him to Johan.

And so, he left.

Notes:

If you made it this far, thank you for reading this self-indulgent piece. It was a struggle trying to come up with somewhat believable moments that could be slotted into canon, but it also ended up being a lot of fun to revisit GX again after so many years! I tried my best but definitely had to give myself a little flexibility with the timeline to make it work.
