A Gift

Summary:

Our favorite girls exchange some Christmas gifts.

Notes:

Early Christmas one-shot cuz my kokoro goes doki-doki when I think about these two.

Work Text:

The blonde werewolf was not one hundred percent sure she should had done what she did, maybe closer to ninety-two percent.

Though she had done it already. Maybe she should undo it.

She looks at her watch.

She doesn’t have nearly as much time to undo the deed. She looks to Thing, the sentient hand that somehow became a best friend.

“Do you think she’ll kill me, be honest.”

The hand joyfully replies with taps and hand movements. “Nah, maybe some light torture, but she’ll love it!”

Enid releases a small, worried filled whine. “I can probably survive torture…”

The powerful werewolf that could very easily rip apart flesh and bone was, worried. Dare she say, scared.

By a more powerful monster? No.

A deadly curse? No.

The undead? Nope.

Missing a school assignment? Nah.

The 5’1 embodiment of a walking encyclopedia with information pertaining on ways to kill a person in many different forms? One hundred percent, yes.

What did Enid do to possibly garner a violent reaction from her roommate?

Well isn’t it obvious? She decorated for Christmas. Her side of the room mostly, sure, but a little on Wednesday’s side too.

All the decorations on her roomie’s side where black and a deep purple though. Enid’s side looked like a department store blew up in there.

She hears a familiar set of steps coming down the hallway. Calm, rhythmic steps. Her heart rate spikes.

“Huh, maybe I’ll cross the rainbow bridge in the sky?” She thinks to herself.

She doesn’t know what to do but just sit on her bed and face the macabre music. She twiddles her thumbs, her claws are out because of how much nervous energy she has.

The rhythmic steps get closer and closer.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Pause.

A zipper and the rustling of paper?

A heavy sigh.

Step.

Step.

She hears the door knob turn, very slowly. Even the door swings open at a snails pace. Until it reveals the ever present glower on her dark roommate’s face.

If Enid wasn’t watching Wednesday for some sort of sign, she would have missed the oh so lightning quick appearance of an eye-twitch.

“Enid.” The psychic greets. She walks directly to her side of the room. To anyone else, Wednesday would have looked cool calm and collected, as always. With a light dusting of spooky.

To Enid though? Oh the blonde werewolf could see the stiffness in her gait. Hear her slightly elevated pulse. Feel the tension in the dark haired girl’s shoulders.

“H-hey Wends…” The wolf’s voice cracks. She didn’t want it to, but it does. She clears her throat. “How was your final class?”

“Hm, potions class was… informative. We learned about the many uses of aconite.” Wednesday’s black eyes quickly dart to Enid’s baby blues. “Interesting plant. My mother brews a beautiful tea with it.”

“So poisoned? Maybe it’ll be quick and painless…” Enid wonders briefly, knowing full well that aconite poisoning is not quick and painless. Especially for a werewolf.

Wednesday looks back to her bag, her eye catches a little bauble on her bedside table that she’s never noticed before. Black raven feathers, wrapped with a deep purple velvet ribbon, there are sprigs of sage and lavender tied into it, and a large claw as the main center piece. She picks it up to inspect it. A small hum leaves her mouth.

Enid breaks into a toothy smile. That was a hum of approval! Her nervousness subsides just a bit. She pushes off her bed, her hands clasped behind her back, heart still going a mile a minute, to stand next to the shorter girl.

“D’ya like it? I picked ‘em up from a raven that was messing with me this last time I shifted. Little sucker kept pulling at my tail and flying off anytime I turned to swipe at him. And the claw is yours truly.”

“You made this?” Her face is unreadable but her very slight tone change is noticeable to the wolf.

“Yup, the new botany teacher gave me the plants.” She beams her megawatt smile. Wednesday huffs and looks away, her heart pumps a little faster when one of Enid’s smiles is directed at her. She’s still unsure why. Or, at least is refusing to admit to why.

“It is… thoughtful of you.” The expressionless girl places the gift gently back on the table. Her eyes catch on other small decorations around her side of the room, Enid kept with the black and purple theme. The decorations aren’t gaudy and bright. Consisting of small animal bones and different plants or other natural elements. “Did you decorate my side as well?”

“Uh, y-yeah. Yes, I did.” The blonde stands a little taller. “I hope you don’t mind? It was kinda feeling like this place needed a bit of that Christmas spirit. And your side looked so lonely compared to mine and I didn’t wanna leave it empty, and I obvs wasn’t going to go all out with bright colors. So I collected some things on my last shift that reminded me of you and-

“Enid.”

“I know I shoulda asked first and for that I sincerely apologize but-

“Enid.”

“I just know you woulda said no, and I totally would have respected it but it was a last minute decision in my defense.”

“I like it.”

Enid is breathless from her little bout of word vomit. “H-huh?”

“I am still a firm believer that Christmas is just a marketing ploy sold to the masses but, this is… lovely. Thank you.” The dark girl moves to face the perplexed wolf. Dark eyes shimmer with the reflexion of the hundreds of twinkling Christmas lights on Enid’s side of the room. They remind Enid of the milky way. She saw it on a family hike through the Arizona desert when she was a kid.

“Yeah! You’re welcome.” The colorful pastel wolf hops a little in her place, hands still gripped together behind her. Her claws are still extended, more from excitement now.

“I have a gift for you.” The psychic lifts up a colorful small box, wrapped in a simple pink wrap and bow. “Thing picked out the wrappings.” Wednesday says a bit rushed.

Enid smiles. “Aw, Wends. You didn’t have to get me anything.”

“I wanted to. It’s a thank you present more then a Christmas present if I’m being truthful.”

“Thanks for what?” Enid leans her head to her side.

“For being you.” She answers like it’s obvious. “I am not the easiest person to be around. I am sorry you seemed worried about asking me to decorate, as we both share this space, you should not need to. This is not a bribe by any means to placate you.” That stupidly wide smile is back in Enid’s lips. “Take it.” Wednesday shoves the present into the wolf’s chest, who clamps onto it.

“Thank you.” She stares at the small box, turning it in her hands, she notices that it’s expertly wrapped. “Can I open it now?”

“By all means.” Wednesday takes a seat at the edge of her bed, looking to the side. Trying her hardest not stare at Enid’s facial expressions.

With a single claw, Enid easily makes a couple of clean cuts that separate the wrapping from the velvet case hiding within.

Out of the corner of her eye, she notices Wednesday fidgeting, it’s subtle but the hawk eyed wolf notices. She opens the case and inside is a bracelet. A simple gold band with an intricate cursive ‘E’ engraved on it. “Is this really for me?”

Wednesday’s look of confusion is adorable. “I do not think I have another friend-

“I’m your friend!”

“Stop that. Another friend that I would bestow a cursed bracelet unto.” If Enid didn’t know any better, she’d think she sees a light dusting of pink on the goth girl’s cheeks.

Wait.

“A cursed bracelet. Wednesday, is this thing gonna damn my soul to hell?”

“Do not fret. It was cursed, I cleansed the item with a ritual. It is now safe to wear. Though it hurt me to do so. The curse was such that the wearer would experience horrifically real nightmares until they went into a homicidal rage. I would wear it on occasion to help me sleep.” The psychic says nonchalantly.

Enid hums, not thinking twice about Wednesday’s words. “Ok then. Thank you.” The wolf slips on the bracelet and it feels like it was made for her. The weight of it lets her know that it indeed is real gold. “Wednesday, is it ok for me to have this? I mean it must’ve been so expensive.”

“This bracelet is a family heirloom. I did not pay a dime.”

“That’s even worse!”

“Little wolf.” Enid blushes, pink and bright. She knows that’s the nickname Wednesday uses when she’s frustrated with her, it shuts her up immediately.

“Okay, thank you for the amazing gift. I’ll never take it off.” She grins, and looks sheepishly to Wednesday. “I feel like I gotta give you something else. My gift is so plain…”

“Enid, I’d hope by now you’d know that I am not one for gaudy gifts.” She picks up the bundle. “The fact that you gave me one of your claws is… special to me. It comes from the person that saved my life, and I will cherish it always.” She holds it closer to her chest. “It will remind me that I am alive, unfortunately. Still cursed to walk this wickedly cruel world, thanks to you.” She says all this in whisper, Enid hears it all, clear as day. “And as an Addams, I am blood bound to repay the favor.” Her eyes shine with resolve. There’s a fire in them that Enid wants to throw herself into. Maybe she’ll be able to feel the warmth if she leans a little closer.

“Um, hah, you’re welcome!” She leans back a bit, and rubs the back of her neck nervously. “But don’t worry about it. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.” She catches herself. “N-not that I want to save you from a shapeshifting teenage boy again, but if a similar situation arose, I’d do it again, duh.”

“That is… good to know.”

They stay in each other’s quiet presence. Drinking each other in. Enid fiddles with her new bracelet while Wednesday examines her gift, thinking of ways on how to make Enid’s claw into a weapon.

“So um. I’m gonna go hang out with Yoko and Divina… do you wanna come along?”

Enid’s eyes glimmer with hope, she doesn’t want to leave the psychic’s side just yet, but she promised her vampire friend to stop by before the end of the night, and was told to ‘bring the small gothic terror’ with her.

Wednesday mulls it over. She can easily say no, stay in her room and get some writing done but, she doesn’t want to part from Enid’s presence just yet. She knows why, but is refusing to acknowledge the reason.

“Promise it’ll only be for an hour, tops.” The way Enid is begging with her eyes is stirring the spiders that are only ever present in Wednesday’s stomach when the wolf is around.

Wednesday sighs, for her in defeat. For Enid’s ears, in unwillingness. “That sounds doable. I’ll come.”

“Yay!” Enid’s arms spread open before she stops herself from leaning in. “Uh…”

The shorter girl nods. “You may.” She answers the wolf’s unasked question.

The taller girl leans the rest of the way in, wrapping Wednesday in a warm embrace. Her arms wrap around the darker girl’s neck and shoulders. She feels Wednesday stiffen before relaxing, melting into the wolf’s hug. Enid slightly rubs her cheek into her dark hair, ruffling it a bit. Wednesday lifts an arm to hug her in return, placing her hand gently on Enid’s lower back, squeezing a bit. They both sigh. The wolf let’s out a whine before they part.

“Come on. Let’s go before Yoko comes by and starts banging on the door.” Enid grabs the shorter girl’s hand and tugs her along, Wednesday lets it happen, her hand is blazing hot, she hopes her palms aren’t sweaty. Being this close to her roommate always sets her body on fire. She wishes she could get third degree burns just to always have a reminder on her hand at all times.

Hells below does she have it bad for the pastel blonde wolf.

Her father and mother will never let her hear the end of it.
