‘They’re gonna come looking for you.’
‘I know,’ she said with a smile.
If only she knew what that smile would cost her. When she stole his shield, she knew something would happen. Perhaps a large demotion and being thrown back in with the rookies, or a discharge from service all together. What she hadn’t expected was a fully armed SWAT team sent to her safehouse. She wasn’t an Avenger, or even a vigilante. Hell, Ross thought she was an incompetent agent with a schoolgirl crush. Didn’t those bastards have other things to worry about?
There was no going back now. Madripoor was dark, dreary, and had a permanent layer of smog that made it hard to breathe at times. There were eyes on every corner, which wasn’t unfamiliar to her. She had to be on guard at all times. It made it hard to eat, sleep, and take a shit. It was less than ideal living conditions, but it was the only place that didn’t allow extradition.
Steve said he’d call when the time was right. So, she waited. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and after a year of waiting, she gave up. Steve wasn't coming for her. Finally, she let the phone hit the concrete and crunched it under her boot. She was done waiting for someone else to save her. No more…
