Fire of Mandalore

Summary:

In one time and one galaxy, Death Watch killed the entirety of Jango Fett's family. In the same galaxy and time, Jaster Mereel took a mission to the planet of Kaller. And in that galaxy, Jango and Jaster both met their ends in a bloody war. Leaving only the ideas of the True Mandalorians to live on.

But in this time and galaxy, things happen a bit differently. A member of Jango's family escapes and lives. Jaster takes a mission instead to Stewjon. Resulting in a vastly different galaxy where eventually, the darkest thing happening is the accidental acquisition of planets by Jango and Kenna Fett. Or is it?

Chapter 1: A Girl and A Grain Field

Chapter Text

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....

A gentle breeze blows through a grain field on the moon of Concord Dawn in the Mandalore system. Inside the house on the farm where the grain field has been planted, there is a couple, Kata and Ijan Fett, who lay together on their bed with a little girl. Their daughter, Kenna. Her brown eyes are lit up in joy as her father scoops her into his arms and holds her tight to his chest with a playful growl. Kata on the other hand laughs as she begins to tickle her husband's side, forcing him to release his daughter with a deep laugh.

After Ijan releases Kenna to her mother, he rolls onto his side with a groaning sigh, to the sounds of laughter from both his wife and his daughter. As he rolls onto his side, Ijan catches sight of a group of men in traditional Mandalorian armor stomping through the family's wheat field. His smile dies.

"Kata, hide her," Ijan says, his serious tone making the room somber.

               "What?"

"There are Mandalorians coming. They're the ones Jorad and I were warned about by the head of the Protectors. The Death Watch. They don't spare anyone, Kata... Not even children."

Kata Fett's eyes widen in fear as she tucks her daughter closer to her chest as she stands from the bed. Silently, the lump in her throat preventing her from speaking, she nods to her husband. Ijan presses a soft kiss to his daughter's forehead before Kata quickly turns and walks out of the bedroom to the small closet that they had turned into a safe room for their daughter when news of the Mandalorian Civil War had reached them.

Ijan picks up his blaster, goes to the front door and begins firing at the soldiers of Death Watch, hoping with all that he is that his wife and his daughter are spared. However, his hope for his wife is trampled as Death Watch soldiers begin setting fire to the family's farmhouse and the area immediately surrounding it.

"No!" Ijan shouts, his momentary distraction giving the soldiers enough time to get just a few lucky shots in. Ending Ijan Fett's life.

                                                                                 ◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈

Kata Fett, after hearing the rapid blaster fire coming from the front of her house, and after smelling the smoke from the fire that was now burning part of her house, runs directly past the safe room and out the back door. At the start of the grain field behind their house, she sets the young child down on the ground.

"Mama?" Kenna asks quietly, her voice small and wavering.

"Kenna, I need you to run into the grain fields and hide. Hide like you do when you and dad play hiders and finders. When the bad men are gone, I need you to go to uncle Jorad and aunt Mali's house. Alright?"

               "Alright, mama."

Kata pulls her daughter into her embrace and places a kiss on the top of her daughters head. "Be brave, my darling. Remember that mama and daddy will always love you," Kata whispers, almost too quietly for Kenna to hear.

But the little girl does hear, and as soon as Kata lets her daughter go, the little girl turns around and runs into the grain field, sparing a parting glance to look back at her mother. But then Kenna turns around once again, and continues her quick run through the field, soon reaching a point where her mother can no longer see her.

Tears balance on Kata's lashes, but she quickly dries them and reaches for the blaster at her side. The woman takes a deep, steadying breath and runs out to the side of the house. Once the warriors of Death Watch see her running for the field at the side of the house, they take off, no longer watching the flames as they lick at the boards of the house. Instead, they chase after Kata. Intent on ensuring there are no survivors.

And Kata doesn't get far before blaster bolts begin to strike her, and soon she falls to the ground mid step. Her dark hair is splayed out around her head and her arms lay by her head. Smoking, black holes are burned into her clothing and her body. Death Watch has claimed the life of Kata Fett.

                                                                                 ◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈

In the middle of the grain field, Kenna Fett hides behind a rock, her whole body quivering. Tears threaten to fall from her eyes, but little girl keeps them at bay. Her eyes burning from the effort, but she is successful.

Kenna keeps her ears alert, just as Ijan taught her to, and it is hours after the blast fire has stopped, after the fire has stopped, and finally after the trampling trough the grain fields has stopped that she hears the whoosh of many jetpacks starting at once. In her hiding place, the girl shakes. Terrified of them finding her from above. But the sound of the jetpacks grows dimmer and dimmer as the minutes pass.

Still though, the little girl doesn't move. Her limbs are shaking, and Kenna has to fight against her own mind because more tears threaten to fall. She sniffles, and wipes her eyes on her sleeve. Then, within another hour, the sound of jetpacks returns to the Fett homestead. Kenna stills and wills herself to be as quiet as possible.

Then, people start calling her name.

               "Kenna!"

"Kenna Fett! Kenna, are you there?"

The girl shakes, her muscles quivering as she tenses, ready to run at the slightest noise. Then, the grain around her rustles. She turns her kneeling position into a crouch. When the grain parts in front of her, Kenna lunges forward. Sinking her teeth into the finger of the Mandalorian man in front of her.

A strangled howl cuts through the air as her teeth sink through flesh. Only when Kenna tastes blood does she let go of the iron clamp her teeth have on the man's finger. Instead of running away as most would do when they've had their finger bitten by someone, the man looks down to see a tensed girl, ready to run at any given moment.

"Udesii, ad'ika. Udesii. You're all right, little one." The man kneels down in front of Kenna and removes his helmet, revealing a man with a calm, but strong face, warm brown eyes, and hair as dark as night. "My name is Jaster, little one. Your cousin, Jango, is here with us. The men who did this to you and your family are gone now."

"Are you sure?" she asks, her voice wavering and soft.

Jaster's eyes soften even more. "I'm sure. Do you want to see your cousin?"

Kenna nods slowly. Jaster reaches out a hand to her, and after a moment of hesitation, Kenna takes it. Jaster begins leading her through the grain field back to where his warriors are. When the two get within sight, Kenna releases Jaster's hand and bolts to a boy who looks enough like her that they could be brother and sister.

               "Jango!"

               "Kenna!"

The boy, Jango Fett, picks up Kenna as she slams into him. The two wrap their arms around the other, and Jango presses his little cousin's head into his shoulder.

"I'm so glad you're okay. We saw smoke out here and I thought you were dead. Oh, Kenna, I'm so glad you're okay!"

"I'm glad you're okay too, Jango. What about uncle Jorad and aunt Mali? And Arla?"

Jango sets her down and kneels down so he doesn't tower above Kenna. Even though Jango is only ten and Kenna six, he is still much taller than his younger cousin.

"Arla, mama, and dad all tried to fight back against Death Watch. I was sent to warn Jaster. Death Watch killed them, all three of them. And Kenna... uncle Ijan and aunt Kata were killed too. We're the only ones left, you and me."

Kenna sniffles, and then buries her head in Jango's shoulder, who pulls her closer. There are footsteps behind the girl before Jaster kneels down in front of Jango, touching Kenna's back. His helmet is still off and his eyes are soft and full of sorrow as he looks at the two children. He places a hand on Jango's shoulder as he says,

"You have both shown incredible bravery. And Jango has told me that your fathers were honorable men. If you would both have it, you have a home with me on Manda'yaim. You would be cared for and loved, you would both have opportunity to be a verd, a baar'ur, or whatever you wanted to be."

Kenna looks up at Jango, and when their eyes meet, he nods. As it is, Jango is the first to speak. "I'll come to Manda'yaim with you, Mand'alor."

               "I will too."

"Very well. Now, let's get back to the ship. I find I would rather like to go home."

Jaster takes the two children's hands and, with a surrounding escort of warriors, they return to the ship that the True Mandalorians used to journey to Concord Dawn. On the return trip, both Kenna and Jango fall asleep, tucked into either side of the Mand'alor. Who gives any warrior who raises his voice above a whisper a fierce and steady glare.

And so it is no surprise to the warriors that as soon as they return to the city of Keldabe and the children are woken up that Jaster asks their permission to say the Gai bal Manda.

The two cousins look at each other for a few moments before Kenna nods and throws her arms around Jaster's neck. Jango observes with a small smile before he nods as well.

"All right then," Jaster says. He looks up and around at all of his warriors. "You here are all witness to this." He turns his gaze to the two Fett children. "Ni kyr'tayl gai sa'ade. I'm very glad to have you, would you like to see the city?"

With a grin that seems to split her face, Kenna nods. Her grin appears infectious as a grin spreads over Jango's face and then Jaster's. After the man takes both children's hands once again, the three set off to see the city. And every Mandalorian that sees them pass by feels their heart warmed by the sight. For although the two children have lost their parents, both sets to have protected their children, they have gained a new family among the Haat.

Chapter Text

"Buir, are you sure you have to go today?" Kenna Fett asks, the seven-year-old's pleading, brown eyes turned to look at her father. "You just came back from a job on Corellia. Why do you and Koyi have to go again?"

Jaster's eyes twinkle as he kneels down in front of his daughter. "Yes, Ken'ika. I have to go again. I promise, I'll be back within four rotations. Don't worry, you and Jan'ika are perfectly capable of taking care of yourselves for a little while. And you know what to do if something happens."

"Bite them?" Kenna asks, a predatory gleam in her eyes.

Jaster laughs before pulling her into a hug. "Yes, ad'ika. If needed, bite them. But don't bite your vod. You won't get uj'alayi for two weeks if you do." Jaster releases Kenna before pulling his son in for a hug. A squawk of indignation rising from the older boy.

               "Buir!"

"Can't a buir hug his ad?"

               "It's embarrassing! Ni ta'raysh solus, nu t'ad!"

Kenna giggles as Jaster releases Jango with a sigh. "Ret'urcye mhi, ner ade." He turns and walks aboard the ship, toward another Mandalorian warrior waiting at the top of the ramp.

"Ret', buir!" Kenna shouts, waving to him. Jango waves as well as the ramp to the ship closes. The boy then takes his younger sister by the hand and leads her inside the large palace that they call home.

                                                                                 ◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈

Jaster and the Twi'lek Mandalorian, a woman name Koyi, chase the Rodian, Rharm Bosmell through the woods of Stewjon when Jaster picks up the sound of a child crying in his helmet's receptors. He looks around quickly but doesn't see anything so he opens the comm channel between him and Koyi.

"Koyi, you keep chasing him. I hear an ad crying somewhere."

"You got it, Mand'alor. You want me to bring him back to the ship?"

"No. Turn him in at the bounty station downtown."

               "'Lek."

Jaster splits up from Koyi running through the woods, listening as he does to the cries of the child becoming louder. He runs through the trees, jumping over some of the felled trees before arriving at a large, quickly flowing river. The child who was crying is louder now as Jaster scans the banks. Eventually, his eyes land on a young woman, more a girl than a woman, with dirty blonde hair holding a screaming toddler, both of them almost a mile upstream from the Mand'alor.

She holds him tightly to her chest with tears dripping from her eyes, there is clearly a reluctance from the girl as she holds him over the river. Which, with it being still in the planets early months, should still be almost ice cold. Not a place where a small child, or even an adult, could survive for very long.

The girl lets go of the child and to Jaster it seems as if time slows down as the child, a red head, falls into the river, the waters swollen and raging from the melting snow of the spring. The girl who dropped him stares down at the waters, sobs wracking her body, as the current pulls the child further down the river and into the depths of the waters. Once she can no longer see the child's bright red hair, she turns on her heel and practically runs away, still crying. Jaster runs forward into the river and lunges into the water when the child bobs up and its hair is visible.

Jaster pulls the child up quickly and gets out of the water just as fast. Even through his layers, including beskar, he can feel the chill of the water. The man, once he is on the river's bank, pulls his hal'cabur off and zips the outer layer of his flight suit apart. The now no  longer crying child, which Jaster is able to see now is a little boy, snuggles closer to Jaster, who places him the padded vest and zips it up over the child.

"Oh, ad'ika. Let's get you to town."

Jaster picks up his chest plate and begins walking back through the woods back to the last town that he and Koyi had passed while still chasing their bounty. He stalks through the houses and shops until Jaster arrives at the only doctors office in the town, a run down, but newly painted light green, stone building. Clearly something that was built quite a few years ago, though it is very clearly still in use. As is shown by the fairly steady stream of people coming in and out of its doors.

Jaster enters the building and, even without his full set of armor on, the man is still intimidating to the Stewjoni people. So the man walks up unopposed to the receptionist's desk, where a pretty, blonde woman who appears to have some amount of Twi'leki ancestry, greets him and notices the small, shivering boy that Jaster holds close to him. She immediately takes him back to an exam room and lifts the child out of Jaster's vest and places him on the exam table.

"Where did you find the boy?" the woman asks lightly.

"In a river. I saw a girl throw him in."

The blonde woman sighs heavily, looking at Jaster with sad, purple eyes. "Unfortunately, what you saw is not uncommon here, Mandalorian. The Stewjoni still practice the marriage of girls, usually sixteen, though perhaps a year or two younger. Most of these girls are uneducated and so this is all they know. Within a year of marriage they almost always have their first child. If that child shows signs of what the rest of the galaxy calls Force Sensitivity, especially if they have red hair like this little gentleman, it is Stewjoni tradition for the mother to throw the child into the river and drown them."

Jaster's eyes take on a hard quality as he growls, clenching his fists. Interrupting his rage is a small whimper from the boy. The doctor soothes him easily and continues speaking.

"It's a shame what happens, some of the Stewjoni that live in the larger cities have renounced such beliefs, but the majority of the planet does still believe that red-haired Force Sensitives are the creation of Keir, their god of fire, storms, and darkness. Throwing them into rivers came from the stories of their main goddess, Fia, the goddess of water, life, and fertility. The story goes that Keir and Fia were once lovers, but Keir had an affair with a mortal woman. Fia was angry and cursed the child that was borne of their union with abnormal and destructive powers, giving it red hair as a marker of the child's danger. Every child borne of a mortal woman and Keir since has been cursed in the same way. Since Fia was the goddess of all the waters of the planet, to placate her anger, it was told that every child whom she had cursed was to be sacrificed to her in their second spring."

               "That's... that's... osik'la."

"If that means what your tone implies it means, yes, yes it is. My husband's sister was thrown into the river when she was toddler, he never forgave his parents for it and eventually, he left the planet, we met at medical school and I came back to finish my residency. He and I run this clinic together, and we've been trying to get this practice eradicated."

Jaster nods and rests his hand on the little boy's back, rubbing his fingers gently over the skin in the circular motion he uses on Jango and Kenna when they get nightmares. Though it is more commonly Jango that he does it to now, Kenna, being younger, has more or less blocked the events from her mind and her memories of her parents deaths grow a little more distant every day.

"Well," the doctor says, "he's as healthy as he can be, considering the fact that he was pulled from a river."

"Is there a way to find out what his name is?"

"No, it's unlikely he even has a name to begin with. Most children like him are called Obi-Wan Kenobi, which means No-One of No Clan."

Jaster's eyes take on a hard, angry look. His free hand clenches into a fist and he practically growls. "That is a name for only the worst demagolka. No child deserves that name."

"I agree with you, Mandalorian. But I'm afraid that's how things are done here. The best I can do for him is try and find a family of world who will adopt him. But that doesn't happen very often. It's very difficult to find someone who genuinely wants a child to raise who would pick a child from a backwater planet."

Jaster closes his eyes briefly and breathes out, praying to the manda that Jango and Kenna would be all right with getting a new little brother, before he says,

"I have two children already, I could take him back to Manda'yaim." Jaster runs his hand through the boy's drying hair. "He would have a home, family. And two older siblings that are or'atin'la. I believe the more common saying is tough as nails."

The doctor smiles gently and says, "Having an already stable family is something adoption agencies often look for. My brother runs the adoption side of the clinic, I can get him to come talk to you for a little bit, and, if he agrees, I see no reason why you couldn't take  this little gentleman back home with you."

               "Thank you."

"Of course. I'll send my brother in as soon as he has a free moment."

Jaster nods and picks the little boy up after having replaced his hal'cabur, and holds him close trying to lull him to sleep while waiting for the man who will decide the fate of this ad'ika.

They are not left waiting for too long, although it is long enough for the boy to have fallen asleep, before a man with the same pale blonde hair as the doctor walks into the room holding a datapad. He looks up from his notes and sees Jaster holding the small boy with a smile, even as a small amount of baby drool collects on Jaster's chest plate. The man smiles softly at the child before taking a seat in the chair in front of Jaster.

"Hello, I'm Vinis Nalle. My sister told me you wanted to adopt a boy you found."

               "Yes."

"Well, I don't see a problem, I just need to ask you a few questions. Mostly for flimsiwork's sake, but a few for me. If that's all right with you."

Jaster nods and the questions begin.

"Are you married? Have you ever been?"

               "No."

"All right," Vinis says making notes on the datapad. "Do you have any children? If so, how many? And what are any details you feel comfortable sharing?"

"Yes. I have two children already, I adopted both of them last year. The elder is a boy named Jango and the younger is a girl named Kenna. They are biologically cousins, but I adopted them after their parents were killed last year."

Vinis nods and makes more notes on his datapad. "So you are well aware of the challenges of raising adopted children?"

               "I believe so."

"And, this is the last question about your children, how old are they now and how old were they when you adopted them?"

"Jango is eleven now, he was ten when I adopted him and Kenna is seven now, she was six at the time."

Vinis hums and taps his stylus on the datapad. "How will you support this child as he gets older and potentially has questions about his adoption and his birth parents?"

"So long as he is close to being of age on Manda'yaim, I do not see a problem with telling him the story of how I found him."

"And how old is the age of majority on Mandalore?"

"Typically thirteen or fourteen is when a child takes their verd'goten and, if he or she passes, they become an adult. On occasion, it is pushed back a few years if the child begins training later than average and displays a skill level that is unfavorable to their survival as a  verd."

"All right. I only have one more question for the official flimsiwork. What are your hopes for this child as he grows?"

"That he will be able to make his life his own, to decide what he wants to be and who he is. And with who Kenna and Jango are, I have no doubt that he will be more than able to stand up for himself and what he wants."

Vinis nods and says, "Well, I think this is the quickest that I have ever facilitated an adoption. And given what I've heard about Mandalorians and their... reverence, I suppose is the word, for children, I have no doubt that should anything happen, there will be a myriad of contingency plans for all three of your children. The last thing I need is your name, and a name you've chosen for the boy."

               "Jaster Mereel, and Ben Mereel."

"All right, I just need you to put your signature here," Vinis indicates a line on his datapad. "In your language is fine, we do it a lot with off planet adoptions."

Jaster signs his name and Vinis gets up and grabs a bag from beside the door and hands it to Jaster. "This bag has enough supplies for a couple of weeks for a child of his age. I wish you luck, Mr. Mereel."

Jaster nods and gets up, shifting the boy, Ben Mereel, the new youngest member of the alor'aliit, so as not to wake him. He quickly says the adoption vows before exiting the exam room. After nodding to the doctor who checked Ben over, Jaster exits the clinic and makes the mile hike to the spot where his and Koyi landed the ship before pursuing their bounty. The Twi'lek is waiting outside of the ship for him, and with her helmet not obstructing her face, her look of surprise is easily seen by Jaster as she takes in what he is holding.

               "Me'ven? Me'bana!"

               "Munit gehat'ik. Nu jii."

Koyi nods and heads back into he ship, her lekku swinging back and forth as she shakes her head. Jaster takes Ben into the ship and lays him down on the bottom bunk before strapping in next to the bunks as Koyi commences lift off. After the ship enters hyperspace for the trip back to Mandalore, Jaster gets up and explains the situation to Koyi, who laughs and says,

"You better hope Ken'ika and Jango are okay with this. Otherwise you're going to be out of a place to live."

               "What?"

Koyi laughs again and says, "Tyvokk has his eye on Kenna to teach once she's old enough next year. I don't remember if she's told you, but she wants to be an ori'ramikade. He's already been hinting, and so has she. And, well..."

"Tyvokk is the al'ori'ramikade," Jaster groans. "And Jango wants to be a bounty hunter."

               "Yep. Jate jate'kara, Mand'alor."

               "Vor'e."

                                                                                 ◈◆◈◆◈◆◈◆◈

After arriving on Mandalore, Jaster first greets Jango and Kenna, both of whom are quite clearly very happy to see him. Even if Jango does deny it. But then, Koyi hands Ben over to Jaster and the man kneels down.

"Jan'ika, Ken'ika, this is Ben. His parents did some bad things to him and I took him in. Do you think you'd like to have a vod'ika around?"

Jango looks at the toddler with a bit of suspicion, but his eyes soften as Ben pulls lightly on Jaster's kute collar. "We'll see," he says, crossing his arms.

In contrast to Jango, however, Kenna is thrilled. And Ben takes to her nearly immediately. The little girls talks to him in nearly fluent Mando'a, only a few stutters on words here and there, a vast improvement to her inability to speak the language at all only a year prior. Jaster laughs as the boy toddles off after his older sister, knowing full well that within only a week, give or take, the novelty will wear off and Kenna and Ben will be fighting with each other just as siblings do.

Jaster waves Koyi off before staring to walk back into the palace of the Mand'alor. He is joined at the door by his eldest son who walks beside him in brooding silence for a few moments before asking,

"Buir, ni tion, be'Ben buire demagolka?"

Jaster sighs and rests a hand on Jango's shoulder. "Elek, val kebbur kyr'amur kaysh."

Jango nods. "I guess he can stay. If I can teach him how to fight."

"No ganging up on your sister. One day, she'll pay you back for it."

               "Fine."

Jaster laughs and says, "You can still help me teach him though. Tayli'bac?"

Jango nods before both of them hear a crash and a startled yell from up in front of them and look at each other before running towards the noise, knowing one of Kenna's favorite past times is a game she calls Ambush.
