GREED— The Lugunica Capital is a large circular city, it's divided into five layers. From top to bottom: Royal Palace, Nobles' District, Commercial District, Commoners' District, and the Slums.
- We are in the third layer, the Commercial District, home to a variety of shops, both for the commoner and the noble. We are in the eastern section of the city, where most food items are sold.
- North West, the Nobles' District. It contains the main mansions of the low nobles, and the secondary residences of high nobles, it's well guarded by knights, a very safe place, or dangerous, depending on who you are.
- South West, the commoners' district. It's where more than half of the city's population resides.
- Further South, the Slums. The only place of note there is the loot house where stolen goods are sold, although "Officially" it's a tavern if a knight ever visits it. Aside from that, there are several brothels and taverns.

Anyone able to purchase a Metea will be wealthy and well connected, they can and will track you down. And trying to sell a Metea of this quality while hiding your identity would be too suspicious.
I can't find a memory that might solve this issue. I'm sorry, I will do better next time.

LUST (Trivial: Success)— She's surely beautiful! She must be my fated one!
GREED (Easy: Success)— In case you haven't noticed, in this world, hair color varies greatly between individuals. Pure black, pure white, and bright red hair are considered rare. Silver hair like hers is especially rare.
PRIDE— Silver hair... Beautiful.
SILVER BELLS— "Then did you see the thief run past here?" the girl with silver hair asks the robbers.
MEDIUM THUG— "Huh? No, we didn't see shit!" he said with rude dismissal.
SMALL THUG— "Yeah! We didn't see shit, Bitch!" he echoed the previous statement, his only addition being the B-word.
BIG THUG— The Big Thug shakes his head, staying quiet, his arms folded.
SILVER BELLS— "I see, thank you for answering my question. I'm sorry for bothering you, but I'm in a hurry so I will be excusing myself here." she said with speed and finality.
Then she bowed politely and started to run, but she was stopped by one of the thugs.
MEDIUM THUG— "Hey hey now, pretty Lady, isn't it rude for you to leave without compensating us for our troubles? huh Lady? You even accused as thieves when we were just minding our business! How are you going to make it right?" he says as if he was an amateur actor reading his lines. Maybe he's not so used to this.
SMALL THUG— "Yeah! Hand over everything you have! Bitch!" the small thing barks with confidence. The B-word especially, he says it with unique cadance born from frequent use.
BIG THUG— He moved to block her exit path behind her. Exposing his back towards you, and blocking your view of the girl.
ROBBERY— Now, this is a proper robbery. No room for doubt. The three thugs has surrounded the Girl. No jury would find you guilty no matter what you did to these thugs if they saw this scene.
ENVY (Easy: Success)— You should do something!

GREED (Trivial: Success)— The Medium Thug's knife hit the wall of ice, if the wall wasn't there, you would've been stabbed. The girl saved your life.
LUST— Her voice is beautiful. I want to keep listening to her forever.
SILVER BELLS— You look at her. You finally, properly, look at her.

—She was beautiful. She had long silver hair, with braids in it that reached down to her hips. Her amethyst eyes shined with intelligence. In her soft features were both elements of youth but also mature beauty. There was also a noble air about her that gave her a dangerous and bewitching charm.
The girl was about one head shorter than you, which made her around hundred and sixy centimeters tall. The clothes she wore used white as a base color, and there was nothing terribly ornate about them, but on the other hand, the simplicity emphasized her presence.
The one thing that stood out was the white cloak the girl was wearing. It was emblazoned with embroidery that depicted a bird of prey, adding to her impression of majesty.

GREED (Trivial: Success)— That's a spirit. Probably a great spirit actually, since he has a body and can talk. Normal spirits don't have bodies. He's extremely powerful, despite his appearance.
MEDIUM THUG— "Hah?! He's the one who ran up to us and kicked our pal in the balls! I was merely defending myself!" he pointed fingers towards you and complained.
YOU: ENVY (Easy: Success)— "You were the one trying to rob this girl! Who are you complaining to?!"
GREAT SPIRIT— "Hahaha! The Weird Boy is right, you shouldn't complain after you tried to rob my daughter. Now, hurry up and leave. I won't chase you, we're in a hurry."
SMALL THUG— "I'm going to remember your face, bitch. The next time we see you, it won’t go this well for you." he said as he started walking back.
GREAT SPIRIT— "If you do anything to her, I will make sure there will be nothing left of you." the cat said in its cat voice. The Small Thug is terrified.

"Felt" is a thief who resides in the Lugunica Capital's slums. Among the slums' thieves, she's by far the best in speed and agility, thanks to her unidentified divine protection which allows her to move like the wind.
She is quite stealthy, she makes minimal noise and uses her small frame to her advantage. However, her looks standout too much for her to hide in plain sight. She prefers to track her targets from rooftops, dive down at opportune moment with speed and stealth to steal, and make her escape through the rooftops.
She only targets the residents in the Commercial district, and Nobles' district. She doesn't steal from those in the commoners' district, or the slums.
Thanks to her master thief status, and choice in going after rich targets, she occasionally receives jobs to steal specific items from specific targets. This is one of those jobs.
Her shack in the slums is nearby the loothouse, but most of her time is spent in the loothouse, when she's not out on a job.
GLUTTONY—
Under a full moon, amongst the rubble and debris of her destroyed home, a blonde girl puts on a strong willed smile. "If it's that important to you, you should hide it better so it doesn't get stolen again." she tells someone, and after being told to quit thievery, she replies "I don’t think I did anything wrong, and I have no plans to stop."
In her hand, a dragon shaped insignia, it's jewel shining bright red.

SILVER BELLS— "So, does that ring any bells?" the girl asks you, returning you to reality.

"I'm sorry, I don't have any money on me right now, but after I retreive my insignia, I can pay you back. I just have to reunite with the girl I came to the Capital with, and she can pay you back if I ask her nicely and apologize." she said, all of that in one breath.
PRIDE— A fellow wielder of the "Empty Wallet" I see.
WRATH— This is good, we finally found our first income. Even better, we can make her indebted to us, and extract more value in the long term.
ENVY (Easy: Success)— No. You're not going to exploit her emergency. Helping people in need is an obvious thing. You won't ask for candy after helping a grade schooler cross the road. It's just not who you are.
- "No no no, I don't want your money, I can take you there." (reject payment.)
- "I see, then in that case, I can take you there." (accept later payment.)
- "Sorry, I don't know them after all." (call off helping her.)

GREAT SPIRIT— Suddenly, the fluffy great spirit appears in front of your face, stopping you in your tracks. "Stop! Don't just start walking as if we were done talking!" he said loudly in an irritated tone.
"What I want to know is why you know where to find the thief, despite claiming you're not involved in the theft. You haven't explained that at all!"
YOU— "That's uhh..." You said, reacting without thought.
SLOTH (Trivial: Success)— He's suspicious of you, even more so than the girl. She was ready to follow you, but he won't let her.
Half truths and deflections won't work on him. Be careful now.
ENVY (Medium: Success)— He wants the best for her. You should be forthright, and explain your circumstances. They would surely understand.

The Great Spirit, and the Girl with Silver Hair, are listening intently. You're on the right track, continue.
"During my search, I learned that the thieves can't just openly sell their stolen goods, so they need someone to sell it for them, I think they're called a Fence? The most well known one is this big old man called Rom. He runs this loot house, officially a bar, that buys stolen goods from the thieves, and later sell it to the right clients directly."
The listeners nod, they see the logic. But it's not yet enough.
"There in the loot house, I learned of the most well known thief in the slums, Felt, a small girl who is famous for her exceptional speed. She is too memorable to hide in plain sight, so she only steals expensive goods from the rich, or specific items she's been hired to steal. So the Fence Rom and the Thief Felt works together like family."
The Great Spirit nodded, your description of Felt seems to match his impression. They were chasing after Felt before you found them after all.
"I remember well just how bad I felt when I was looking for the loothouse, wandering aimlessly without any leads, only to learn that my stuff was already sold. It was a Metea my parents gifted me, so I got in a huge trouble with them afterwards too."
The Girl shows you sympathy, her expression softened significantly, the bit about losing a gift from your parents seems to be the main reason. Reminding them that they have a time limit on recovering their item also seems have been effective.
"So, I can't just ignore someone in the same trouble I suffered from in the past. But that's not all, I'm not just offering to lead you there to help a stranger"
Both of them raise their eyebrows at that. What you say next, they will pay close attention.
"As I said earlier, I was planning on asking the thieves for any leads on what I lost recently, I lost something very personal and important to me, and I'm in the middle of searching for it all across the capital. So I was going to the loot house sooner or later. And since I encountered you two, I thought I should help someone while I'm at it, that's all."
Yes, very personal and important to you, such as your name and your memories. It's suspicious just how convenient you seem to them, but hopefully their current emergency will lessen their caution.
"I'm sorry the explanation was a bit long winded. Thank you for your patience!" you finish your story.
Somehow, you managed to tell your story confidently, with full commitment, and despite it being made up on the spot, you showed no hesitation, and finished the story neatly.
It's like you fell down the stairs, and managed to land a backflip.
GREAT SPIRIT— "hmmm... I will let you help us for now. But don't try anything funny with my daughter now, understood?" he said, dropping his cute persona momentarily.
ENVY (Easy: Success)— "Yes sir! I promise I have no bad intentions towards your daughter!"
SILVER BELLS— "You don't have to go that far. The boy seems to know where the thief is, and we have no other leads so far. Let's try believing in him for now."
The girl then addressed you, her guard still up, "I will say it just to be clear, if you lead us to a trap, you won't leave unscathed."
- "Understood!"
- "I will be on my best behaviour!"
YOU— 2. "I will be on my best behaviour!"
SLOTH— They're still suspicious of you. But they seem to be willing to follow you for now.
ENVY— See? Being deceitful is bad, if you were honest, you wouldn't have had this problem. They still see you as a suspect, if you were honest, maybe you could've become friends with them by now.
LUST— Nah, me and bro got this. Before, they were suspicious because they knew nothing about you, but now, they're only suspicious of your story and the validity of your claims. And since you truly don't wish them harm, with time, their suspicions will be proven false.
When you find the insignia for her, your claims will be proven true, and you will have done her a huge favor despite their suspicions. This way, you can make them feel guilty for doubting you, and indebted to you for finding her insignia.
One stone two birds.

Now, lets go to the thieves den, beat up some slum dwellers, and retreive the insignia. Lets clear our first quest, and conquer our first Heroine!
ENVY— This is all so wrong...

GLUTTONY (Medium: Success)— Somewhere, in a different dimension, outside of time, outside of timelines, floating in the endless void, there is a dark room with no exits. Rows of seats are facing a giant screen that glow silver, it is a movie theater.
The seats are almost all occupied. The viewers are a diverse cast of characters, it's almost impossible to gather all of them in one room normally. However, they were gathered here mysteriously, to watch what was playing on the screen together.
There, amongst the viewers, one raised her voice in disgust "Ha! That is the true color of your beloved commoner! Does anyone dare to defend him now?" the girl's beautiful yet cruel voice reverberate throughout the theatre, and none dare to challenge her.
Another voice, barely audible, whispers to herself in sadness "Is that how you see me, ■■■?"
- What was that?
YOU— 1. What was that?
GLUTTONY— Another voice, this time a timid man's voice asks nervously "I-Is he aware of us? Just now, it was like he responded to what he heard here. How is that possible?"

Raw dogged the chapter in one sitting.
Hope the naming process wasn't too tedious. I wanted to write it so they logically arrive at a name, and have it come really close to the name Natsuki Subaru. Hope I didn't make too many leaps in logic, I tried my best. Jumping from Seven Star to Big Dipper instead of Pleiades is my favorite bit here, because the Big Dipper is definitely the more commonly known term, and GREED doesn't dig further than that, and misses the word Pleiades. If he made that connection, he could've remembered the word Subaru, then Gluttony would remember Natsuki from there.
My favorite bit that was unplanned was the two new thoughts of "Femininity" and "It's for Bad Adults" I like how I stumbled upon them, and I like how they were written. Internalizing either of them can lead to new plot threads/beats, and character interactions, it's easy to imagine how. Also, that "Sevenstar is a brand of cigarette" bit is actually true, I'm not actually sure what the image of it is like in japan, but from the quick search I did, it has an image of a smoke for regular smokers. Thinking the package looks cool is my opinion. I'm not a smoker or a drinker btw. I just thought it would be funny to make IwaToMushi's smoker Subaru a character in a fic, and the GLUTTONY passive check just happened. I can see GREED, LUST, and PRIDE encouraging Subaru to start smoking and drinking.

SLOTH (Easy: Success): She's trying her best to convey her concern and goodwill to the little girl, but it's failing. Her rising panic is affecting the little girl, and echoing back to her, creating a feedback loop of panic between the two girls.

The girls watch your magic trick with full attention, their eyes are on your closed fist. The little girl is no longer on the verge of tears.

The little girl is fascinated by the trick, she examines your hand, searching for the coin. She just witnessed real magic. You nod in satisfaction, then reach out to her ears, brushing through her hair.
“Would you look at that! So this is where the coin was hiding.”
When the little girl saw the coin resting between the fingers of your left hand, she was stunned.
"I’ll let you keep it as a present. It’s special, so take good care of it, okay?"
The girl receives the coin and nods vigorously.

After some back and forward, you learn that the girl was separated from her mother after she chased after a cat while her mother was probably haggling with a merchant.
Learning this took some time, but you were patient with her. She seems comfortable with you now.
GREED: Your stupid brain would like to mention to you that she's probably the daughter of Kadomon Risch, the Fruit Seller. She told you her name earlier, Plum.

You said the thief 'Felt' is in a place called the 'loot house' run by this 'Rom' person in the slums right? Thank you for telling me the location, but we can figure it out from here." She spoke while avoiding your gaze.
She's decided the conversation is over. She's done with you.
"Let's go, Puck." she said, and Puck becomes wisps of light and enters the green crystal on her person.
Her silver hair trails past you. You are behind her now. She will keep moving forward without you in her sight. Step by step, she leaves you.
SLOTH— Huh? Why is she leaving? Weren't things going well? Did she mistrust you this much? Was it because the Cat laughed at you? None of this makes sense.
PRIDE— No! Don't let her leave! Not here, not like this!
LUST (Challenging: Failure)— She'll turn around to you if you say "Wait!" loud enough. There was hesitation there, she's looking for an excuse to not leave you.
She's your Heroine. This is merely a dramatic scene to spice up your romance.

GLUTTONY (Medium: Success)— On a creaky wooden floor, illuminated by moonlight, specks of dust dances over a pool of red, a lifeless hand reaching out to nothing. There's no one there to bring relief to her in her last moments.
Silver stained red. Insides exposed outside. A woman in black dips her hands into the warm red as she smiles in delight.

"Here, you dropped these." She hands over your plastic bag with its items put back inside.

SLOTH (Trivial:Success)— ...Are we back? Did she mistake that whole scene for you just tripping while running without reason? She's even gathered your things for you. Just how kind is she?

SILVER BELLS— "Hmm?" She turns around to you, expression puzzled.

GREAT SPIRIT— Before you could think of any replies, the Great Spirit gets in between you and her once again.
"We're in a hurry, so don't stop us again. Let's go."
SILVER BELLS— "But—"
GREAT SPIRIT— "We really should hurry. A human like him can't keep up if you run right? You'll be in trouble if you don't recover the insignia as soon as possible, right?" he said quickly, with a smile, leaving no room for argument for the girl.
SILVER BELLS— She nods meekly, then she looks at you briefly. "I'm sorry, but we'll be going then. If we meet again, I'll repay you." she said with a small bow.
Suddenly, she jumps up and lands on the roof of the nearby building. Dissapearing from your sight entirely.

PRIDE— F*** that Cat. You should kill him the next time you see him.
ENVY— Damn... It's hard not to feel that way right now. But be positive. You saw how she didn't entirely hate you right? It was the Great Spirit, who's called 'Puck' if you heard right, who is keeping you away from her.
SLOTH— An over protective parent. Or rather, a sufficiently protective parent, I suppose it can't be helped if your daughter is that cute. If you had a daughter, you would surely do the same.
LUST— Yes, but really, F*** that Cat. Getting in between star crossed lovers. What a waste of mascot design.

GLUTTONY— Cloud covers the sun and paints the scenery with cool blue shadows. The bustle of the commoners' district can be heard from ahead.
GLUTTONY (Medium: Success)— Once sun sets, blood will spill. The world will freeze. Tragedy is approaching.

Hey it's been a while, I'll yap here again.
I'm still not done with my commissions (just 2, but I'm slow), 1/3 big illustrations done, and my vtuber model commission is... going shamefully slow. Vtuber models are hard to make. I'm completely broke rn because of how slow I am lol.
So I'm not free to focus on writing without feeling guilt, but I wanted to post a chapter, and take a break while waiting for my client's feedback. So this chapter is posted, and it's kind of a rushed one (as usual), even if I took a long time without updating.
Btw I edited and slightly rewrote chapters 1-5, I'll edit chapter 6 and 7 later. I strongly dislike chapter 7, and worry chapter 6 might not be fun to read for readers. But I think I'm coming to accept that there will be weak chapters, so I just have to plow through.
Hardest part about writing this fic is placing myself in Amnesia Subaru's shoes, and feeling like shit. This first loop where he's completely oblivious, amnesiac of even his japanese memories, and hearing all these voices, it really sucks to be in his place. After this first loop, I hope/think it'll get easier to write him.
In this chapter, I ended up making him fail big time. In Disco Elysium the skill check failures can be very painful to read through sometimes, and I hope this chapter feels slightly like that, at least it was painful for me to write.
Let me know how it feels to read this chapter, I felt like this chapter dragged on a bit too much, and I worry the flow of time and events may feel unclear to the readers. I'll try to edit this again later when I'm done with my commissions.
PRIDE and LUST steering the ship is really a disaster ngl.
Oh and I'll just post the ENVY skill portrait here, kinda proud of how it came out, worried about drawing the other skills later. As you can see it's a mix of Volition, and Inland Empire from Disco. As well as some other vague ideas I have specific to this fic. It was fun to draw.

The slum dwellers, the serfs, the demi-humans, the beggars, the crooks, the prostitutes. Those in the bottom of the hierarchy don't get to live while being weak. You live strong or die. They don't like to think they live in the slums.

GLUTTONY— The guards are busy maintaining order in the commoners district, where the majority of the Lugunican citzens live. Down here, there is too much filth, literal and racial. There's not enough personel to patrol through the slums, it's not even officially part of the city, and there's little to no benefit in spending manpower here. Preventing slum dwellers from killing each other are hardly worth the effort.

Uphill, several estates of important nobles stand tall, most of them are empty, the owners of these mansions live in the lands they lord over. They're only occupied by servants who keeps it clean so the owners can feel at ease, knowing their capital mansions are clean.

Above it all, on the peak of the Royal Capital, the peak of the entire Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica is the Royal Palace. Pristine white walls, enchanted to remain pristine at all times, built to withstand against the strongest of magical attacks. Tall towers that overlook the entire kingdom. With the right equipment, a person standing on those towers can probably monitor the entire royal capital, and even find you looking at it right now.

Especially the King and the royal family, blessed by the Divine Dragon, they're the reason we live in such a great nation.

Heyo fast update this time. Almost the complete opposite of chapter 8, it was posted fast, I liked writing it, I like the chapter, it has substantial art content.
I was planning on writing the Rom and Felt interaction in this chapter, but thought the current stopping point is better, and I just wanted to post fast because I finished the illustration.
As for the chapter content: GLUTTONY heavy chapter, I had fun coming up with the details. Personally, my favorite part of this fic is the thought cabinet, in this fictional disco x re:zero game I want to play, I love the idea of the player making decisions while looping and it leading to thoughts, which results in a Subaru with unique mix of beliefs and knowledge/skills. Here, starting from the "Live Strong" thought, I'm teasing a potential path of Subaru choosing to become Felt's (and Rom's) ally, as he empathizes with the lower class of Lugunica. Depending on the players choices, this can lead to further thoughts to internalize, such as "Demi-Human Civil War" and "Sword Demon", which might lead to another different route as well. I don't plan on writing these big divergence routes, but I want the options to exist in Arc 1, as well as other more obscure routes that become possible.
Oh and I hope the NHK joke wasn't too cringe, it was a last minute addition. Subaru has RBD and this loop will perish, so I thought more wacky choices should be present.
Oh and I just had an idea while writing this fic, of using passive skillchecks to make Subaru speak his thoughts outloud on reflex. I've always thought making Subaru come up with reactive jokes and *choosing* to say them made him come across as disingenious and manipulative, so making for example LUST Medium Check "say the thought outloud without choosing" can serve as an explanation of Canon Subaru's tendency to speak his thoughts outloud without filtering while he's nervous, and reactive jokes. I wish I thought of this since chapter 1. Oh well.
As for the illustration: I vastly overestimated myself thinking I can draw a good background in a few hours, I'm an artist who basically never do environment or background art, I only do character art and design, so this was a nice learning experience for me. I fear my comments will sound like humble bragging here. So I'll just say that I'm satisfied with the final result, and I hope it fit the story moment properly. Also, changed the GLUTTONY portrait, still not satisfied with that, but for now it'll do. GLUTTONY looks that way (skull), because he has no patches on him now, Subaru technically hasn't even seen his own face, and is purposefully avoiding such identity problems, similar to how Emilia always avoided looking at a mirror. So the GLUTTONY portrait will probably change later.
Shameless request, but if anyone could post the illustration on the rezero reddit I'd appreciate it. They liked the chapter 4 illustration, so I'm hoping they'll like this illustration as well.
I'll do some editing of the entire later (such as the tasks, thoughts, time, stats, etc audit), and don't expect the next chapter to come soon, it'll likely be coming soon™ instead.
