Chapter 1: A dragon and a lion

Chapter Text

111 a.c

Throughout King’s Landing the news spread, King Viserys’ heir was set to marry in two moons, the princess of Dragonstone, Rhaenyra, was now betrothed to the Lord of Casterly Rock, Sir Jason Lannister. Many marriage proposals were sent to the King, many powerful men willingly to give their fortune in return for the hand of the princess, a girl of only four and ten, but now it was done. A contract written by the council in order to calm the court’s nerves after the recent wedding between Viserys and the Hand’s daughter, Lady Alicent. Although Otto Hightower tried hard to put a stop to it, Lord Lannister’s offering was not something the crown’s tresure was in a position to decline. And so the  celebrations began.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now it is over, at last. Rhaenyra was no longer a maiden and Jason slept calmly beside her. It seemed as though the Gods hated her. First, her mother died, second, her most trusted friend betrayed her by marrying her dad, and then, her father sold her to the richest Lord in order to resolve the insult he spat at all the nobles he offended by taking the daughter of a second son for wife. She was all alone in the world, with Alicent as a rival and Daemon in Essos, she was hanging by a thread.

Jason proved himself at least a little wiser than she originally thought, his pride was a problem she had no energy trying to solve. He wasn't old, he was older, twenty and eight if she heard correctly, and he was handsome, and she held onto these little things to make peace with this marriage. The only thing keeping her sane at the moment was the knowledge that her position was still secure, with the realm being not so happy with her father’s choice for wife and the lack of a son, Rhaenyra still knew it was temporary, sooner than later Alicent would present a son for the court, a challenge to her throne, in that Jason was useful, as upset as he was with the idea of being ruled by a woman, the thought of a son of his being King overshadowed it.

His gold mine Money was also a good resource in the hard path she was to face ahead, and he could do his duty as husband in bed, which she didn’t find as repulsive as she thought she would at first. And it was already done, so the best she could do was pray that his ego would work in her favor.

Chapter 2: A prince for the realm

Summary:

The princess gives birth to her heir.

Chapter Text

112 a.c

The screaming of the babe was even louder compered to the silence of the Red Keep. There, Rhaenyra gave birth to her son, heir to the throne, a prince of house Lannister, although his features didn’t agree with this statement, a boy with silver hair and purple eyes. His mother’s joy and his father’s pride.

The boy was the breath of relief of the Seven Kingdoms, after the Alicent’s stillborn son three moons prior, the realm feared the princess and the queen would suffer with the ill-fated journey of late Queen Aemma. But now the joyful breeze that last took over the place when Rhaenyra was born had returned.

- Look! He 's smiling! – King Viserys exclaimed, while holding his grandson – You’ll make a fine king, boy! Won’t he, dear? – He said, looking at his wife, whom, unnoticed by him, had an annoyed sad expression on her face and responded with a simple nod.

- I have my choice of name for him, my Lady Wife.  – Lord Lannister said, staring proudly at his newborn boy.

- I just had the most wonderful idea!- The King proclaimed loudly, cutting Rhaenyra abruptly. – What of the name Aegon? I’ve always loved this name! – The room turned quiet, Aegon was what the King intended to name Alicent's son.

- A name fit for a king!- The Lord of  Casterly Rock was the first to speak, he looked at Rhaenyra, both aware of all the tension in the room. There was no instance where they would refuse a suggestion made by the King

– Besides, it makes only sense for the future of the Realm being named after the greatest ruler the Seven Kingdoms ever had! The dragon egg Rhaenyra chose was already placed in the prince’s cradle in fact. – Viserys smiled, and handed the boy to his daughter, who seemed to have forgotten all bad feelings, and held her son close, now understanding truly, what she was fighting for.

Chapter 3: A New princess

Summary:

A world in which Rhaenyra has the daughter she had always hoped for, and Helaena has a mother a bit more aware of her.

Chapter Text

114 a.c

The good news couldn’t spread through King’s Landing fast enough! The princess of Dragonstone has given birth once again, this time, to a girl, another princess. It has not been long since the celebrations for Prince Aegon’s second name day, cut short by the sad news that the Queen had miscarried the babe she was carrying. But joy took the princess’ heart once more. Rhaenyra was expected to have another boy, a Lannister heir, but she couldn’t help but feel happiness when she received the news she was a mother to a daughter, and although she saw the disappointment crossing through his eyes, it seemed her Lord Husband was also welcoming towards their little girl.

-Another Targaryen i see! – Her husband said, but Rhaenyra did know he was truly bothered by it. – She’s beautiful! Just like her mother – It was true, the Targaryen genes were strong ones, but the princess could see the resemblance between Jason and their children.

When she first held her daughter, Rhaenyra felt a kind of love she never experienced before. Rhaenyra loved her parents, and her uncle, her cousins, in special Laena, who now acted as her lady in waiting. But mostly, she loved her son, who gave another meaning entirely to this word, her sweet girl was her whole heart, it made her think an awful lot about her own mother.
During her pregnancy she had talks with Jason about the name, were a boy, they had decided on Tyland, after her husband’s brother, whom he cared deeply for. The name for a girl was a given, Aemma, her darling mother. But when her eyes first laid on her little princess, she knew she deserved her own name, there was an Aemma in her life, dead or not, so she was to find another name. To her surprise, her good-mother was the one who found her name.

-Helaena! Princess Helaena Lannister of house Targaryen. – She simply nodded, it was perfect. A beautiful name for her beautiful girl, her princess came into the world with a look in her eyes, as though she knew exactly who her parents were, and who she was.

Chapter 4: The dornish princes

Chapter Text

118 a.c

Alicent Hightower was a Woman of pride, the time took enough care of that trait of hers, for in seven Years of marriage with the king, she was unable to give him the male heir her Father was hoping for. Now it was different, the queen flaunted her sons throughout the court; Jacaerys, her husband named him, a boy of two, with dark eyes and dark hair. Just like his brother, prince Lucerys, of only ten moons. rumours commented on the strange resemblance the boy had with Alicent’s sworn protector, Ser Criston Cole.

-Is anyone truly surprised? The Woman must have been desperate for a son! – The whispers were the loudest ones ever said, and they became more powerful once the boy’s dragon egg, a gift from the Queen’s step-daughter, grew cold. But the King heard none of it, Princess Rhaenyra’s daughter and her second son’s eggs both didn’t hatch, but it was still expected of them to claim a dragon When older, something the Queen did have in her favor.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the Other side of the castle, The princess cradles her own babe, a plump, beautiful boy, Daeron. Rhaenyra loved spending time with her children, Aegon, now age six, was a charming boy playing with his golden dragon at her feet, her Helaena, of only four, was peculiar in many aspects, but still as perfect as a child could be, who was now Looking at a book full of pictures of all sorts of insects, something she had grown interested recently, and her mother happily indulge her, even if her Father didn’t agree.

Her second son, Aemond, a boy of only three, the Lannister heir, was in the company of his uncle, Tyland, who adored the boy as his own.
Rhaenyra was a happy Woman, she loved her children, and through the Years, she managed to form a Strong relationship with the great house, but she couldn’t help but worry, even if just a bit, about her Half-brothers. She had done everything right, formed alliances, had four successors, three of them male, she sat at the council and would play the part every other crown prince would have had, but she remembered her cousin’s words “the men would Rather put the realm up in flames than seeing a Woman ascend the iron throne”. And that haunted her, for fear for herself, and now her own children and their futures.

For that reason, she didn’t pull much of a fight When Jason brought up the topic she was dreading ever since she had her Sweet little girl.

- I think it’s time we think about the marriage offers we've received – Said her husband, with a serious voice. She knew he found himself more concerned about this than she did, but it was impossible to avoid the topic, more so after the birth of a boy by Lady Alicent (Rhaenyra refused to acknowledge the title she stole from her mother’s blood bed)

- He’s right, good-sister – Tyland spoke, as Rhaenyra’s ladies each took one of her children and walked them out of her chambers, noticing Where that talk was heading. Tyland was the most welcomed surprise the princess had over the Years, a stern, truthful and loyal voice in her ear.

- Tyland and I have been analysing the proposals. We think there are a couple that will make a good contract.

- We shall wait till the children are of age of course. – Tyland said.

- I have been thinking about this matter myself. I have received a letter from my Uncle and Lady Laena, they talked about their Twin girls, and they informed me of their desire to ally our houses once and for all, and perhaps mend our relationship with house Velaryon.

Laena and Daemon had gotten married after the celebrations for Prince Aemond first name-day, although she felt an odd feeling up her throat, with fear of being alone again, without her most trusted friend, and perhaps something else she wouldn't name. Although it was a confort having her babies with her, something she didn’t have last time. The Velaryon girls were born in Pentos a few moons prior, which marked the first time in two Years her Father and Uncle talked. Rhaenyra sent many gifts for her nieces, and wished all the best for them.

She wouldn’t mind her boys marrying someone within the Family, even though Jason discarded the idea of a a marriage between Aegon and Helaena When mentioned. The princess wasn’t thrilled about it either, for deep down, she wished her children could find true love, as stupid as it was. But as of now, she knew there was more to it, she didn’t love Jason, but time showed her he was at the very least an important ally, and she learned to care for him, and that’s all she could’ve hoped for her babies.

- It does sound like a reasonable idea, but I have been thinking of a greater target, an alliance with Dorne! – Her husband spoke with a spark in his eyes she was familiar with all too well.

- Dorne? They hate us! – Rhaenyra proclaimed in frustration.

- Prince Qoran has a daughter only a year younger than Aegon, and with a good contract i’m sure they would leave their pride if they knew one of their own would one day be by our boy’s side When he ascend the throne, and their off-springs would follow him afterwards.

- I suppose, and that would make them choose a side at last. But what of the ladies Baela and Rhaena?

- We could make an offering to marry Baela to our Aemond.

- Would Lord Corlys accept his heir being so far away from home and married to a second son?

- The boy is third in line for the throne and will follow me as Lord of Casterly Rock, i know for a fact not even the most stupid man would refuse this offer!

- Then it’s settled! I will write to Laena and tell her of our proposition.

- There is still Helaena and Daeron to think about! Do not Forget. – Her husband reminded her.

- I do remember. But once Helaena is be betrothed she will belong to a different Family! And she’s my only daughter, there is still time, she is not to be wed tomorrow! And Daeron is only a babe.

-This will be discussed later, but we could Always find a Family closer to the capitol for her. – Sir Jason was aware his wife didn’t want their daughter away, but he also knew how important this alliance was to him and his house, and that was his priorities.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Within three moons the contracts were written and made known for the world, The Prince Aegon would marry prince Qoren’s daughter and heir Aliandra Martell, after a lot of convicing and Lannister gold. And Prince Aemond was set to marry his cousin, the Lady Baela Targaryen, heir to the throne of Driftmark, Sir Jason would accept nothing less for his royal children.

The realm celebrated the News with a feast, but soon enough the attention shifted once the Queen walked into the room carrying her son in her green dress. Most stood up in respect for Alicent, not Prince Daemon, nor Prince Qoren and surely not Crown Princess Rhaenyra. In the council, Otto Hightower tried it all to put a stop the Whole thing, but Jason Lannister was having none of it. His mother, Lady Ceira Lannister, would make a comment to the group of noble women Around her later during the feast “The man can’t find a decent prospect for his dornish grandson than tries to ruin the night for my good-daughter and her boys”.

Later in the Evening, after the princess had danced with her husband, Lord Corlys, her uncle and even the dornish prince, Qoren rose and loudly announced “A toast! To the Realm’s delight and future King Aegon, second of his name!”
The rest of the night was spent with Alicent, long forgotten, and an absurd amount of wine.

Chapter Text

125  a.c

The Years following were calm to Princess Rhaenyra and her Family.

- This one has sixty rings and two pairs of legs on each, that’s two hundred and forty. – The princess Helaena spoke.

- That’s correct, My love! – Her mother joyfully responded, paying good attention to the insect her daughter had in hands, it was one she ordered to be brought to her girl from Essos after she saw it in a book. Helaena was, according to some, an odd child, she spent quite a bit of time surrounded by her animals and studying them, Rhaenyra knew there was more to it, she knew her daughter was a dreamer, making sure this knowledge didn’t leave their Family circle, for she was afraid people wouldn’t understand her, but she went far and beyond to make sure this gift or curse wouldn’t take a toll on her girl, and bought all sorts of things to make her collection more complete. Against all odds she was still the most perfect image of a princess.

Rhaenyra did almost everything with her daughter by her side, and made sure she had the same education her brothers received, with the exception Helaena didn’t have to take a sword in her hands again, a mistake the princess had learned from.

- It has eyes, though, I don't believe it can see.

- Why is that, you think?

- It is beyond our understanding.

- I suppose you’re right, some things are. But what do you think...

Suddenly, the door opened, startling Helaena. Rhaenyra looked back to see Aemond coming in, crying, and quickly she stood up, her daughter following her.

- It has happened again. – Helaena said to her mother. And with that Rhaenyra had an idea of what she meant.

- Sweet boy! What has happened? – She said after hugging him.

- They gave me a pig mother! They mocked me.

- Who did? – Rhaenyra said, already with a Guess on her mind.

- The Queen’s idiotic bastards! – Rhaenyra was right, and although she didn’t use this term, the boy picked it up from his Father. But before she could say anything, Aemond said something that made her blood boil. – And Aegon.

- Aegon? – To that Rhaenyra was surprised, her son was sometimes unaware, but he wasn’t cruel, but she knew better than to doubt her prince. – It matters not. Hear me now, my dear. You will have a dragon one day, it may take longer than your siblings, but it only means you haven’t found the right one for you. Alicent’s sons are no different than you in that aspect, do not listen to them. I will talk to your brother myself, do not worry.

Aemond had calmed down at this point, and once his mother’s word finally sank in, he was Much better.

- Stay here and make company to your sister, Love. Let me deal with your brother. Helaena was just telling me about this once insect, it has two hundred and forty legs!

To that, Helaenas nodded satisfied and showed to him the animal in her hands, and after kissing each their heads, Rhaenyra headed straight into her son's chambers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aegon felt himself shaking, once up he took notice of his mother's face, not good.

- He told you.

- He did. Your cruelty sent your brother crying to me. – His mother said, with a Much different tone than the one she usually uses with him.

-Listen, I regret it, a lot. I was heading to his room to apologize! It just happened that I fell asleep. – With that, Rhaenyra softened a bit, she could tell he meant it.

His mother sat on the edge of the bed while Aegon sat up.

- We know, and you will tell your brother how sorry you are, but there is more to this than just a stupid prank. – Mother was firm.

- How so?

- What were you doing with Alicent’s bastards? Did you make fun of your brother to impress them? – His mother was usually against this term,  never saying it wasn't true, just giving a warning it wasn’t wise to say it.

- No, of course not! I thought it would be funny, but it wasn’t.

- I will tell you one Thing son, everyone who isn’t us, is an Enemy. Never, and I repeat, never, make your Family look weak. You and I, your sister and brothers, those are the ones we trust, understood?

- Understood.

- When the time comes, and I am no longer here, do you know who will fight for you? Your brothers.

Aegon smiled to his mother in agreement and got up and walked to the door, once there his mother asked;

- Where are you going?

- To see Aemond.

And if he had looked back, he would’ve saw his mother smiling proudly.

The next day, he would take up to the skies on Sunfyre with his brother with him.

Notes:

I imagined the relationship between Aegon and Aemond to be sort of like the Salvatore brothers in TVD. They fight like dogs but would die for each other. Daeron is (for now) the baby of the family, and i'm still trying to figure out what to do with him.

Chapter 6: A funeral

Chapter Text

A moon later

The trip was a hard one, for Rhaenyra especially. When it reached the princess’ ear about the News, she fell on her knees and cried for hours. Lady Laena was her most trusted advisor and only true friend. Laena was the one by her side When she had her first babe and was so scared to end up like her mother, and the one she trusted with her deepest thoughts and feelings, and now she was dead, childbirth had taken her.

In reality, it has been Years since Rhaenyra last saw her, Daemon refused to go back to court, even When his daughter and her son were betrothed. Rhaenyra didn’t even know how she looked like after ten Years, but it hurt all the same.

Once they reached Driftmark, Rhaenyra finally came to her senses, she took her daughter by her hand, followed by Jason and their sons, and once in firm ground, they were greeted by Lord Corlys and princess Rhaenys. She couldn’t imagine the pain they were feeling, with the joust that took their son Years ago, and now their daughter, Rhaenyra couldn't think of the idea of being a childless parent.

- We offer our most sincere condolences on the loss of your daughter, she was the most wonderful Lady. – Aemond was the first to speak, as instructed by his Father, as a sign of respect for his late, almost good-mother.

- That is Much too kind, my Prince. – Rhaenys responded with a sad look upon her face.

As the Family continued with the conversation and their well wishes for one another, and princess Helaena spoke Sweet words that soothed Rhaenys, and Aegon and Aemond talked to Corlys encouraged by their mother, a Loud voice caught all their attention.

- Cousin! – Viserys startled Helaena, who took a firmer grip in her mother’s hand – How great it is to see you again! Although it would’ve been better to meet in different circumstances, Laena  was a true beauty. – Rhaenys then responded politely, if not a bit dry.

- Let me introduce you to my boys! You haven’t had the chance to meet them. – Perhaps it was intentional of them. – Here’s my oldest boy, Jace! – Jacaerys was a shy boy of eight Years of age who was Hidden behind his mother’s skirt. – Here are Luke and Joff! – Viserys seemed to be the only one who truly cared about that Whole introduction, Lucerys was only a year younger than his older brother, and was a child with Much energy who drove his mother to madness. Joffrey, of only five, was a boy no more captivated by that talk than everyone else, except the king himself.

All three boys with dark hair and eyes. Not one bit Targaryen, the court whispered, and more than once, the King’s hand brought up the disrespect, but Viserys paid it no mind. None of them took after their father’s feature, nor had a dragon of their own. Princess Helaena was now rider of Dreamfyre, and Prince Daeron had a beautiful she-dragon named Tessarion, and Prince Aegon had his golden lady, Sunfyre. Alicent’s boys were kept Hidden behind doors by their grandsire ever since the birth of the youngest, Ser Criston Cole has been long gone ever since the birth of Joffrey, but the Queen hasn’t been able to carry a child to term since he fled, which made the rumours even more truthful in  the realm’s eyes. But it was only recently they found out about the man’s passing.

Otto Hightower seemed more humble ever since he realized the lack of interest the court had in his grandsons, although he had not given up in having his blood on the throne altogether.

In council meetings, for quite some time he had taken an interest in a marriage between Jacaerys and Helaena, for a bit, Rhaenyra had entertained the idea, it would be nice having her daughter not being sent away after her wedding, but the Lord of Casterly Rock would have none of it

- As if I would marry our only daughter to one of her plain featured sons! – He told his wife after the proposition Otto made. – And even if his wife didn’t say it aloud, her silence was the sign of agreement for most of the time.

Chapter 7: Driftmark

Summary:

Ghosts from Rhaenyra's past come back to haunt her

Chapter Text

Seeing Rhaenyra after such a long time stirred a strange feeling in his throat. Daemon saw her thrice in the past fourteen years.

The first time was during her seven-day Wedding, and by the third day he couldn’t take having to watch his beloved niece become a Lannister, and so he took caraxes and fled straight to Essos, no farewell, Simply a note he left for his brother telling him to give the News to the bride.

The second time was during the Lannister heir’s first name day, of course he knew the prince’s name, he Simply chose not to think about it, for there was a small part of him that hoped for the name to mean exactly what he thought it did. That was the day he noticed Laena, she was a beautiful and smart lady of valyrian blood who was set to marry a rich man from Essos she had yet to meet, so they both took off that night and eloped. Her Father was not happy, but she was and that was all that mattered. Two Years later, they welcomed their two little ladies, Baela and Rhaena. His daughters were perfect, but Laena hoped more for them, Other than a nice house away from their Family in exile. He knew his wife still had contact with his niece, and soon enough they were invited back to the capitol, to promise his eldest, Baela, to Jason Lannister’s second son.

Seeing Rhaenyra that night wasn’t his best moment, he loved his wife, and he loved Rhaenyra. But his niece was now a married Woman, and mother to three children, who paid him no mind during that visit Other than enough she didn’t come across as rude, everything else she resolved with his wife or the Lord of the tides

He could still recall her taking her own little lady to the dance floor, and laughing so joyfully next to her Lannister kin. But this time he couldn’t Simply run, he had his children to take care of, and even though he was a bit offended When offered the promise of a second son, instead of the first born prince, he was aware that this contract would give his daughter the life she deserved. But When the King was about to call off the night, he took Rhaenyra to the dance floor, just as he did in her Wedding, they barely spoke, Simply danced, and that Much was enough.

Now, here at Driftmark, it was the third time, at his wife’s funeral. Laena died by dragon fire, while carrying their third child. He spent the next hours with his daughters, in the rooftop of their castle, and after a Whole moon of mourning, he wrote to Corlys and Rhaenys informing them of their daughter’s death, expecting them to pass on the message. Now she was deep down in the ocean, and his babe went with her.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He kept Looking her way, and he couldn’t seem able to catch sight of her without her idiotic husband following Around like a pup. And he knew it was time to be polite and make an introduction, he took each of his daughters hands and marched over to Where Rhaenyra stood with her Family.

- Greetings dear niece!

- Greetings Uncle. You two must be Baela and Rhaena! – Rhaenyra said, bending over a bit to reach the girl's height. – You must probably not remember me, the last time we saw each Other you were not even one, but your mother Always wrote to me speaking of you.

- Truly? – Rhaena said, the first emotion that wasn’t complete sadness crossed her mind since her mother passed.

- Truly! She talked about her brave Baela and how smart you are! I’m truly sorry for your loss.

- That is very kind of you niece. – For the first time, she looked at him.

- We offer our sincere condolences. – Of course, leave it to the Lannister cunt to ruin the mood.

- Thank you, Lord Lannister. – not paying him any thought. – Now, are these your own pack? – Daemon said, taking notice of the silver haired children dressed in red, gold and black inside the tent.

- Yes, my children. – Rhaenyra said, then proceeded to turn to her off-springs, the girl sat on the floor and whispered nonsense while holding something Daemon could not see, and three boys stood behind her talking.

- Children, come here and say hello to your cousins! – All four walked to Where they stood.

- Hello, you must be prince Daemon, yes? – The tallest one said.

- Yes, and you’re...

- Aegon! My oldest. – Rhaenya spoke, seeing right through his game, even the worst fool in all of Westeros knew the name of the Realm’s delight’s prince. – Here is my girl, Helaena! – His niece said with pride in her voice, her daughter stood with an odd look in her face, staring at him, and he quickly looked away – My youngest, Daeron, and... – and When she caught sight of the one who was missing – Aemond!

Daemon took notice of the boy first, that was the one who would marry his daughter after all.

- So you’re the one who will marry my daughter? – He felt Baela pinch his arm, but he ignored it. It was bad enough having to see Rhaenyra’s features in that Lannister boy,  but having him take his daughter away also, not today.

- Children, why don’t you all go take a look at the sea, it has been a tough day for us all. – Daemon said, and after a nod from Rhaenyra, all the children walked to the shore, followed by three of the princess’ ladies. Had he been paying attention, he would have noticed prince Aemond following his mother’s advice and presenting comforting words to his cousins, and Rhaena holding his hand afterwards.

-Husband, you said you had something to discuss with my Father? – Jason caught the hint, and although wary, to Daemon’s surprise, he left, after giving Rhaenyra a very passionate kiss, that is.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once in a far away part of the beach, Where no one could overhear them, after almost too many years, they could have their first truthful talk.

- What a wonderful bunch of Lannisters you’ve got there, niece.

- I know you have eyes to see this couldn’t be further from the truth.

- They have Targaryen coloring, that’s all I see. One of them doesn’t even have a dragon, true?

- You do not get to talk like this to me anymore, Uncle, I'll be ready for a conversation once you’ve put yourself in your place.

Daemon let go of his pride for a second and called after her.

- We are both adults here, and we’re Family.

- Jason Lannister is your Family now.

- He is the Father of my children, and my husband, a powerful husband.

- I could’ve done the job. I could’ve...

- You couldn’t though! First rock in the path, your solution is to flee! I needed more than what you could give me, and you cannot blame me for that.

- You weren’t that pleased with Lannister When my brother announced your betrothal! In fact, you came crying to me! Asking me to run away with you, flee to Essos Where we could have a life together. If your loyalty had not shifted, i would've fathered your children myself.

- It is not about my loyalty.

- It’s about the throne

- It’s Always about the throne that i will inherit, and my son after me.

- Unless your dear step mother can pass that boy of hers as legitimate and usurp you. How will your dear husband help you than? Does he love you this Much? Would he kill, and die and go to war for you as would have had?

- If not for love for me, than  for love for his son, for his bloodline!

- I’m a widower now. We can still make that work! I’ll do to that cunt as I did with Rhea Royce! Darling, Please! We’ll take my daughters and your children and go back to Pentos!

- Kill the Father of my children!

- I’ll look after them as I would with a child of my own! We can have the life you asked me to give all those Years ago!

- Enough of that! You’re not in your right mind! You speak of treason! My children are royalty, the future of the Realm.

Daemon went silent after that, Simply Looking at her.

- It was nice seeing you again Uncle. But perhaps it would be better to hold onto the happy memories Rather than stir up trouble and have yourself exiled again.

- You know he would usurp you too, if he could. I will not press on the matter, but... Dark sister and i are at your service, my Queen.

But that wasn’t enough, and When Daemon placed his hand on the side of her face, she knew she was doomed.

Chapter 8: Loss

Summary:

The tension is high and we say goodbye to someone else

Chapter Text

Chaos was all over Driftmark, the maester was taking a look at Prince Aemond’s injury, while the Queen tried calming her sons.

Daemon and Rhaenyra soon ran into the room.
-What is the meaning of this? – And then she took a look at her son’s maimed eye.

- Aemond! Aemond! By the Gods! Show it to me! What happened?

The princess was desperate as she held her son’s face close

- Who did this? – Rhaenyra said with her voice full of Shock and anger, not taking notice of her husband’s suspicious look at her.

- They attacked me! – Aemond responded.

- And Baela! – Rhaena said while being held by her Father.

- He broke Luke’s nose! – Jacaerys yelled.
After not being able to distinguish each child’s voice, a shout from the King made all be quiet. For one second.

- He tried stealing my mother’s dragon! – Rhaena said once again, pointing her finger to Alicent Hightowers’s second son.

- He intended on killing Jace. – Prince Lucerys followed.

- It should be my son telling the tale! – Rhaenyra proclaimed loudly.

- He called us bastards! – Prince Jacaerys said

.
- Jace! I will have the truth of what happened. – The king spoke calmly.

- What else is there to hear? Your grandson has been maimed! Her son is responsible! – Jason Lannister spoke up, standing by his wife side as she was still taking it all in and Looking devastated next to their boy, who had his head on her shoulder.

- It was a regrettable accident.

- Accident? – Rhaenyra finally spoke.

- The prince Aemond brought a blade to the ambush, he meant to kill my son.

- It is my son who was maimed!

- Jace and Luke Simply meant to defend themselves of the vile insults levied Against them!

- What insults? – Daemon first said.

- The legitimacy of my sons’ birth was put to question.

- What? – Jason Lannister said while Rhaenyra put herself together and asked for her daughter and Daeron to be taken to her room.

- He called us bastards. – Lucerys explained.

- This is the highest of treasons. – Alicent cried. – Prince Aemond must be sharply questioned so we might learn Where he heard such slanders.

- Over an insult? – Rhaenyra contested while holding her prince close. – My son has lost an eye!

- You tell me, boy. Where did you hear this lie? – The hand intervinde

Aemond looked at his Father, and then at his Uncle, but soon enough he saw Aegon staring back at him with a knowing look.

- It was Aegon.

Aegon held his head high standing by his Family side.

- And you, boy? Where did you hear such calumnies?

- We know, Grandsire. Everyone knows. Just look at them. Tell us about the meres you had, but those dornish traits didn’t come out of nowhere.

-All of you! We are Family! Now make your apologies and show good will to one another, your king demands it!

- This is insufficient! – Rhaenyra complained.
-Aemond has been damaged, permanently, Father.

- I know, Darling, but there is nothing to do

- There is a debt to be paid! – The princess shouted.

- We will have one of her son’s eyes in return. – Jason completed.

- My Darling daughter.

- He is your Family, Father. Your blood. – Rhaenyra cried.

- Do not... allow your temper to guide your judgment.

- If the kind will not seek justice, I will. – Said Lord Lannister in frustration. – Sir Harwin... – Jason turned to his wife’s sworn Shield. – bring me the eye of Lucerys Targaryen.

- Mother!

- He can choose which eye to keep, a privilage he did not grant my son. – The prince consort spoke almost sadly.

- You will do no such Thing.

- It was not only a prince your beasts have harmed Lady Alicent, that was my son! The heir to one of the greatest houses in all Seven Kingdoms! It is the reason why ,When choosing to take this whore as wife, the kingdom did not go bankrupt. You, sir, allow that son of hers to take a valuable piece of flesh to the future Lord of Casterly Rock, forgetting the debt to be paid with my Family! My son is my Family!

The wound now open in fresh air struck the King hard, the reminder of what he owed to the Lannisters distracting him from the words said about his queen.

- I understand you worry, my good son. But here I am trying to maintain peace, and keep this Family together. My sons are your wife’s Family too, you Forget.

- That woman’s bastards are nothing of my wife’s.

- You Forget yourself, My Lord! – It was now the Lord Hand’s turn to speak. – It was an unfortunate event, of course, but it was Much the queen’s fault as your own! Where was the princess and the prince When all this happened?

- How dare you blame me for your grandson’s lack of manners! My son was the victim here!

- I’m Simply commenting on how odd this situation is. – Otto Hightower continued.

- That is enough! All of you, we are Family!

But the speech was for nothing, Jason Lannister took the dagger in his belt and ran in the Direction of the Hand and his grandson.

- It is only fair, don’t you agree! An eye for an eye!
It was the Queen’s brother who separated them at last.

- That is enough for Tonight! – Viserys said, choosing the ignore completely what had just happened.

It was Prince Aemond’s voice that soothed Rhaenyra’s spirit for a bit.

- Do not mourn me, mother. I may have lost an eye, but I've gained a dragon. I proved myself Where her beasts could not. When the time comes, Vhaegar and I will be by your side.
The princess looked at her sons with tears in her eyes. She did not know he claimed the dragon.

- You claimed the dragon?

- Rhaena tried to claim him after Jacaerys failed attempt, but he did not accept her, i tried helping and... She let me ride her. I’m the rider of the mightiest dragon alive, and we are at your service. – Rhaenyra stood speechless
Rhaenyra held her husband’s arm with one hand and her son with the Other.

- Let’s take some rest dear. I want justice as Much as you do, but nothing good will come out of this.

With that the Princess and her husband and sons left for their rooms, leaving a startled joint of people behind.

—----------------------------------------------

- Where were you? – Jason asked while she checked on their already sleeping children.

- I was merely talking to my Uncle, offering my support.

- I see. – Jason said with a dry tone. – I talked to my brother, and I resolved our problem.

- Which one? – Rhaenyra said with a bit of humour, still shocked by the events of the night.

- I have finished my quest in finding spouses to Helaena and Daeron.

To that Rhaenyra paid attention to Jason with a not so happy face.

- There was no quest, in fact I told you to drop the subject all together! They are still so Young, there is no reason to rush into things.

- This is not up for discussion. Daeron will marry Lord Baratheon’s oldest daughter, Cassandra. He has no sons, which will make our son Lord after him. – He said with a smug smile.
Rhaenyra did not show her worry at the comments made by her husband, she Simply asked;

- He would be a consort, no? The girl would be the Lady of Storm’s End.

- In name perhaps.

There it was. That strange feeling in her stomach was here again.

- And what of your suggestion to our daughter?

- No suggestion, the matter is settled. Helaena is promised to the Lord of Winterfell, Cregan Stark!

- No!

-No?

- You will send our daughter all the way up North for what, exactly?

- It will make those north men loyal to us.

- They are loyal to us! To me! Lord Rickon promised...

- A man’s word means nothing When said under the thumb of the King. And any of those might turn on us When the time comes!

- On me, you must have meant. I will be Queen after my Father.

With their voices getting louder, they did not notice how Helaena had woken up, and was now standing near them.

- Momma? – Helaena said, still sleepy, but still seeing the frown in her mother’s face – Is everything all right? How is Aemond?

- Everything is well, Darling girl. Go back to bed. – Jason looked at his wife and daughter and left the room. Helaena did not go back to bed, instead, she hugged her mother tight, and for the first time, she saw her momma cry.

- What is it? You're frightened? – The little girl said with worry.

Seeing Helaena, it dawned on Rhaenyra what Jason’s words meant, her baby would be sent away in only three Years at time. Her only daughter. The promise had been made, he wouldn’t have said to her otherwise, and it was too dangerous to break a betrothal that big.
In the first time since before the birth of Aegon, she felt that awful feeling once again, her daughter would be sent away, her son was without his eye, with not even his grandsire to stand up for him.

- No, of course not, sweet girl. – The crown princess recomposed herself, and with an idea in mind, she wiped the tears off her face. – Everything will be alright! I’ll take care of it.

- There is only one way to do that - Aegon's voice whispered. She had not noticed him there.
And in her mind, she looked deep into her little lady’s eyes, to see if she knew what that meant.
Helaena nodded, and that was all that Rhaenyra needed.

After talking to him, the crown princess went back into her chambers, and spent the rest of the night watching carefully over her children.

Chapter 9: Voyage

Chapter Text

When the sun came up, and Rhaenyra left her bed, and she saw all the servants Looking sideways worried, she knew it had been done.

The prince consort Jason Lannister was dead. He fell from the stairs while going on a Walk drunk after the evening's stressful end.

After saying  goodbye to her cousins, Rhaenyra had a fast talk with her Father.

Daeron’s eyes were red from crying over his Father, but as it seemed, He was the only one, except his mother of course, who was consoled by his Uncle.

- He is the Lord now. – Tyland said while Looking at Aemond

- He is just a child who needs his mother. – Rhaenyra responded. – He will come with me, and I'll make you, brother, my eyes and ears on Casterly Rock. Once he is of age, he will take his rightful place. Aemond will take the place of his Father on the council. Jason has been teaching him for Years now.

Tyland had his suspicions surely, but he trusted Rhaenyra enough to know she wouldn’t have done something this extreme without a good reason, so there was nothing to do except trust her judgment.

—----------------------------------------------

The ship waiting for them was different than the one that brought them here. And Daeron wondered why.

Momma was making sure they were comfortable for the trip. But He knew there was more to it, his mother was nervous, and mom was never nervous. It might just be the sudden loss of their Father, but she was preoccupied comforting them, he imagined she Simply kept her grief to herself. Daeron wasn’t Strong like her, but his siblings were, Aemond was sad, but neither Aegon or Helaena showed any sign that they were now orphans of a Father.

Helaena was helping Aemond with his tasks, while Aegon was watching over them since momma needed to check a couple last details for the trip. Jacaerys told him how stupid he was, being seven and still Calling his mother  “momma”, Aegon had said it was Simply because the Queen did not love her own “bastards” enough and they were jealous. He did not think bad of his uncles even then, until he learned of what Lucerys did to his brother.

- Why are we going on a different ship? – Daeron asked his siblings.

- Because we are going to Dragonstone first, then King’s Landing. – Aegon explained.

- Why? – Daeron has never been to Dragonstone before.

Momma said she needed to have a very serious conversation with us all before leaving.

- Are we going to live there now? – He thought that might be it.

- No. – Helaena said. – But we are not going alone.

Daeron understood what she meant when he saw Prince Daemon walking in with both his daughters.

- Children hello! – The rogue prince spoke Much more cheer than the last time they met. But was ignored by all four of them.

- He’s coming with us. – Aegon said.

- But you two already knew that. – Aemond accused both Aegon and Helaena

- Mother didn’t want to give you more to worry about. – Helaena responded.

- Perhaps they want Aemond to be closer to his betrothed. Or she wants us to be closer to our dragons, now that we all have one. – Daeron whispered.

- It is not that! – and as soon as the twins were far enough away, Aemond went marching toward Where Daemon was standing.

- Why are you here?

- Going straight to the point I see. – Daemon was amused. – Well, if you must know, I'll be joining your Voyage to Dragonstone. -  But his face fell a bit. – I’m really sorry about your Father. I know saying it is just useless, I remember When my mother, your great-grandmother died. But I'll tell you one Thing, it will get better. – And for the first time, it seemed he really meant it. And his brothers and sister ignored what he said, but it did mean a lot to Daeron.

- Thank you, Uncle. – Daemon just smiled at him.

As if on queue, Rhaenyra rose aboard.  Before taking notice of her Uncle, the Princess greeted her children with a kiss.

- Ladies. – She addressed Baela and Rhaena. – Uncle. – She said with a smile on her face that wasn’t there the last time the children saw them together.

- I thought I had more time before they arrived. – She whispered in her breath.

- Children, we’re spending a season in Dragonstone! -  Daemon shouted excitedly, receiving Dirty looks from all his Family.

- Prince Daemon and his daughters are coming back to Westeros, and they will be living there and invited us all to spend the season with them. – Rhaenyra explained, and the children seemed far more relieved. – We thought it would be nice to take a break from the court after all those unfortunate events.

- But what of your position? – Aemond questioned.

- It is all taken care of, Love. – She smiled at her son.

With that, the ship sailed.

Chapter 10: Dragonstone

Summary:

The princess and her family's New life

Chapter Text

Rhaenyra had dreamt of this day for her entire childhood, as of today she was the wife of Daemon Targaryen.

They decided to hold the ceremony the traditional Valyrian way, with only them, Master Geradys and their children.

They waited two moons in respect of their late spouses, not ideal, it was the same amount of time the King took mourning until being married to Alicent Hightower, and although he wasn’t glad about their decision, Rhaenyra had a stern talk with him back in Driftmark. His acceptance was perhaps his way of apologizing for everything, but the princess didn't think it nearly enough.

The first weeks in Dragonstone were strange, coming from the constant gossip and pit of snakes that was the Red Keep. It was peaceful, it was also awkward, she did not know her step-daughters, and Daemon wasn’t keen on her children either. These two months before the Wedding was good so the children would get used to this new Family idea.

Rhaenyra tried taking interest in the twins’ activities, and Daemon did the same with her children. She asked to Join Baela, Rhaena and Daeron’s lessons. Daemon was her boys’ new fighting instructor. He also spent time listening to Helaena, who was wary for most of the time, but glad there were more people to listen to what she had to say.

Daeron and Aemond were quick in warming up to their New father. Daeron asked about giving him the title, and Daemon said he would be honored, but only if he felt it was right. Rhaenyra felt a bit weird about it, she knew her boy was looking into filing the lack of father and grandfather. They heard all sorts of stories about the rogue prince, and were admired by his skills. Aegon, even if he wasn't very fond of the man, knew the lenghts he would go for their mother, and that much was enough for him.

They had a strict “only-valyrian” rule, no common tongue. Daemon was positively surprised by his new children's fluency. He also took over the role of teaching them history. Theirs was the house of the dragon after all.

Rhaenyra added different subjects for Aegon and Aemond’s studies, Aemond who was now Lord of Casterly Rock, and in a few Years would be ruling the place on his own. She paid close attention to him, making sure her son was as comfortable as possible with his new eyepatch. He was spending more and more time with his betrothed. Baela joined her father’s classes, and was a skilled warrior.

Helaena and Rhaena formed a quick bond that surprised Rhaenyra, her daughter grew very fond of her new step-sister, and even showed her the few insects she had brought from King’s Landing. Rhaenyra did wish they could stay in Dragonstone, her girl thrived in here, and Winterfell would be good for her, after all, even if away from her mother.

She intended on having Cregan stay a couple of Years in the capitol before taking her Sweet daughter away for good. Helaena was now exchanging letters with the boy, just as Aegon has been doing for the past Years with Aliandra Martell, and she seemed not at all frightined with her future.

- You need not to worry about me, Momma. And i’ll come visit with Dreamfyre.

- I’ll Always worry about you.

The conversation soothed Rhaenyra, she knew her daughter would’ve told her if she saw anything dangerous coming their way.

She only noticed how grateful she was for Dragonstone three moons afterwards, When she was on her way back to the shit well that was King’s Landing.

Chapter 11: A royal wedding

Summary:

A joyous ocasion at court

Notes:

In my head Aegon and Aliandra are the romatized version of Coriolanus Snow and Lucy-Gray Baird. Helaena is the actress who played her as a child, Evie Allen, but in her performance in "The royal mob". Cregan is season two Jace (sue me).

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The court beamed in excitement as they watched the newly wed couple dance. The prince Aegon and his princess Aliandra were the most beautiful sight in  all the Realm.

Aegon was happy, truly happy. The whole year they spent together before the wedding was worth it, and he felt as though he had known Ali for his entire life. They had been engaged since he was six and she, five. He had not understood the celebration held for their betrothal back then. His mother made sure they were not to be strangers, Aliandra and him, they wrote often, and a few trips throughout the years.

For the past year she had lived at court with them. She acted as company to his sisters and proved herself a Lady worthy of the crown he would one day bestow upon her. Even Aemond warmed up to her, and his mother looked after her as she did with Helaena and the twins.

Aliandra was a kind girl, a charming one. Aegon was fascinated by her, she was beautiful, yes, but even her accent was something magical to him. He would constantly talk to his mother about his fears of not being enough. He saw how his mother and step-father were, he wanted that.

- It is not just that sudden spark that makes a marriage worth it. Love comes in all different kinds. There is the part of lust, but the most important, you’ll learn in certain moments. If you are able to find someone to trust, to care for. You choose to love them.

- Did you and father ever try that choice? Loving one another?

Aegon didn’t speak often about his father. He had admired him once upon a time, and he used to always say how proud he was of his eldest son. Aegon was first able to ride Sunfyre at ten years of age, he remembered that being one of the best moments of his life, until he told the news to his father, their relationship took a wild turn after that. A reminder he was his mother’s son more than he would ever be his father‘s.

For that reason, Aemond was always his favorite, he didn’t claim a dragon until the accident in Driftmark. Aemond was his heir after all. But he couldn’t help but wonder what could’ve been. He cried to his wife about that one day.

Your Father had no space in his heart for me. I was a tool to be used, and when the time came, I would be discarded. Marriage for all of us, is a contract. But its future will depend on how we approach it. Had he defended me, who knows? Perhaps I could’ve given you a happy family we once were. - The late prince consort and his mother had their moments, his mother would dig them up each time Daeron wanted to remember his father.

We are a happy family. - He said, smiling at his mother, who hugged him in return, although her bump didn’t make it easy.

Aegon remembered that conversation each time during his ten days' wedding he felt like running. But a part of him was excited for his future, having a family of his own. Being only ten and five, he had yet time to sire an heir, it did not mean he would be absolved of the bedding ceremony. His nightmare came true when the King himself called for it. The relationship between their family branches was never the same ever since Aemond was attacked by Alicent’s sons, but his grandsire would never acknowledge it.

—-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The nobles occupied the halls and enjoyed the evening while the prince and his wife consummate their marriage. After the blooded sheets were presented, the wine flowed and laughter filled the halls, remiding Daemon of the night of his step-son’s engagement years ago.

He then stood up and offered his hand to his wife.

Another dance? Dear Husband, you were the one worrying over me every other hour of the day so I wouldn't get tired, only to wear me out on the dance floor. - His wife laughed. It was true, even that being their third pregnancy together, and Rhaenyra’s seventh, Daemon couldn’t help but worry.

Rhaenyra was sure this time it would be a girl. Aemond, Daeron, Baelon and Viserys were hoping for another brother, Viserys couldn’t talk much, but Daeron said he agreed with them. Baela, Rhaena and Aegon wanted a sister, and bets were made. Darling Helaena had sewed clothes for her new baby sister, and knowing of her recurring dreams, he knew to trust his daughter’s judgment. She had come to their rooms one night, startling both of them awake, and with that knowing look in her eyes she told them she had her choice of a name.

Look! - She pointed at her book.

As much as we appreciate your love for the books, the little lady should be in bed, no? - Daemon said half asleep, he loved his daughter, but he also loved his sleep, but he loved his daughter more, and when she looked at them expecting them to ask her, he just had to.

What is the name you found?

Visenya!

Visenya? - It was Rhaenyra talking now.

Yes! The conqueror.

Daemon looked at Rhaenyra amused.

What is it? - His wife asked.

Do you not remember? When you were little, while your mother was with child, you once told me you were going to have a sister, and that she would be named Visenya.

Rhaenyra giggled and looked at her daughter at the edge of the bed smiling.

Well, it seems only right. Although I would keep this information from your siblings, Darling. We do not need them fighting over the name as well.

Satisfied with the answer, Helaena marched back to her chambers, only two doors away.

—-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rhaenyra loved her good-daughter very much, but she couldn’t help but worry, the girl was a lot like her, she behaved as expected, but she was still a child. She tried to postpone the wedding, but there was no way to do that without angering the princess’s father. She was the same age as her when she married her first husband, she took over the role of a mother to Aliandra for the entire time she was at court. Many thought it was all political, maybe part of it was, but she had a strong sense of empathy towards the young girl and tried helping anyway she could, the way she wasn’t helped. She was relieved it seemed like her and Aegon were walking towards a good path.

From where she was seated she could see the entire room, her step mother and the Lord hand with a bitter look on their faces, her half-brothers next to them. Rhaenyra thought it was a pity, those boys didn't seem nearly as bad as everyone else thought, but they were hidden from Court as a shameful secret.

The Queen had tried reaching out to a few Lords throughout the years, but none seemed very keen on giving their daughters to supposed violent bastards, even with a promise of a royal title. They worried Alicent Hightower's sons wouldn't hold their position for much longer, when Rhaenyra became Queen, they were certain the Hightower lies would be exposed. The crown princess lived with them their entire lives and barely knew a thing about those boys. Although she had never tried forming any sort of relationship with them, she regretted it a bit, but she knew they were to be used as pawns against her, maintaining a distance was the wiser decision.

Her babies, Baelon, of only two and little Viserys, barely one, were already sent to the nursery, and she should’ve retired with them, but it was such a joyous occasion for her entire family, she had no intention of leaving.

The party continued long after the young couple had left. On the dance floor, Aemond and Baela formed quite a vision. Both kids enjoyed each others company, and were always seen together riding on dragon back visiting their castle in Casterly Rock. Rhaena was a very requested partner, Daeron wasn't as skilled in dancing, his betrothed, Cassandra, was more than happy to take the lead, cute children. Rhaneyra liked the girl very much, and soon Daeron would be going with her back to Storm's End, much to Rhaenyra's dismay, but the Lord had offered and she knew this would be good for her boy. Being both his brother's spare, his future was there, and she didn't want him to be a stranger in his home.

Her Helaena had danced through the entire night, she had danced with the groom, the bride, her uncle, her step-father, her mother, each of her brothers, and even her sisters. At age thirteen, she was a pleasant and happy girl, who struck true Targaryen beauty. She was now with the Lord of Winterfell, her future husband, Cregan Stark. He was a nice enough young man, she realized. The little princess and the boy had been in contact, but that would be the first time they met in person. She could tell Helaena was quite pleased with him. That warmed her heart, and the proposition of them staying for some time after the wedding was settled.

Rhaenyra felt nothing but happiness that night.

Notes:

I just wanted to thank all the support i reveiced. I had no idea how much people would like fhis, and i'm very greatful. ❤❤.

Also, i'm studying for a math test, so i will probably take a few days to publish again. Wish me luck (i need a good grade).

Edit - just a quick note on a change i made in this chapter. In the original it said Cassandra would be taken as a ward in King's Landing. But now it will be Daeron who will he heading to Storm's End (He will likely be there the next chapters). Just wanted to thank short_stuff1491 for commenting about that, i had a doubt on what to do with him lol.

Chapter 12: Succesion troubles

Summary:

The question of Driftmark's succession

Notes:

First of all, i'm sorry for taking so long, i have been dealing with a lot of school word lately. But i've finished most of them, happy days, and intened on updating more frequently.

I wanted to thank short_stuff1491 (again lol) for the sugestions. Baela and Aemond betrothal will no longer continue in order to each of them being able to concentrate on their own land. I also like the Aemond/Rhaena ship.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

King Viserys health was not something people liked talking about, but they did whisper. The king rarely left his chambers, a walking corpse, they said. Perhaps he was scared of frightening the little children that lived in the Red Keep.

- Who goes there? - the voice called.

- Father. It 's me, my King. Rhaenyra.

- Oh!

- I’m here with Aegon.

- Aegon? Aegon. Let me look at you boy! I feel like I haven't seen you in ages, you visit your mother, but never make time for your old grandsire!

- It hasn’t been that long. - Aegon said, his voice weak, noticing the King’s state. - Only four years for us two. Dragonstone and Sunspear are already too time consuming, I didn't want to bore you with any of that.

- Father. - Rhaenyra said. - There is a petition to decide upon the succession of Driftmark and the heir to the Driftwood throne.

- Petition?

- You are to affirm your position for Baela to be Corlys’ successor.

Someone had opened the door now, and Viserys could hear children.

- Grandfather… There's someone I wish to introduce you to. - Aegon spoke with relief. The princess had a smile on her face when heading to the nursemaid.

- Father, you remember Daeron, the younger! - Rhaenyra stepped out of the way so her father could take a look at the child in Aegon’s arms, a little boy of four name day, all Targaryen.

- Daeron. I remember how smug my grandson looked when you announced his name. - The King laughed.

- And this… is Aemma Nymeros. - The baby girl in Rhaenyra’s arm turned to face the King in his bed. She was a carbon copy of her mother, for that Aegon was grateful, but he took pride every time he looked at her and saw his own eyes, his mother’s eyes, his grandmother’s eyes.

- Ah! Aemma! Now that is a name fit for a Queen.

He sure was right, but Aegon was certain he saw his mother’s eyes darken a bit when looking at the King. When he and the children left, his mother stayed behind with the King already asleep. And for the first time since Driftmark, Rhaenyra gave her father one last chance of standing by her, of being her family again, and the King complied.

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for today, Vaemond Velaryon had called a meeting with the king to address the succession of Driftmark. Lord Corlys health was deteriorating, and long ago had named his oldest granddaughter, Baela, his heir. His brother thought it unfair, he had a male successor, he just simply ignored it.

The audience was a suggestion of the Queen.

Prince Aemond had called upon his brothers, in order to support their step-sister. Prince Aegon and his wife and children had returned from their home in Dragonstone. Princess Helaena had made the trip by dragonback, bringing her twins, Rickon and Sarra Stark, with her, beautiful children of almost two years old. The woman refused to ever be separated from them. Daeron, their daring prince, would arrive too late with his betrothed, the girl’s father worried about them traveling all alone.

The throne room’s light seemed to have been separated, shining in two sections. On one side, Crown Princess Rhaenyra stood with her husband, their oldest children, princess Aliandra and princess Rhaenys, all holding their heads high. The other side was occupied by Queen consort Alicent, with her three boys and her own father, Larys Strong was with them, and Vaemond Velaryon to no one’s surprise.

It would be a quick affair, had the King showed up that was. And in his absence, Otto Hightower would direct the meeting. It did not matter how much his daughter showed her worries, it was all useless, Viserys was weak, a weak man, and a weak king. Daemon understood his wife’s disappointment, but unlike her, he had learned to deal with Viserys’ incompetence long ago.

As Vaemond made his statement, Daemon looked to his eldest daughter, head high, no fear.

- So the girl will marry Lord of Casterly Rock, and then? The Velaryons will be erased by the prince’s Lannister blood and name!

It was when it was heard. .

- King Viserys of house Targaryen, the first of his name, King of the Andals, and the Rhoynar, and the first men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm.

- I will sit the throne today! - Princess Helaena helped her grandsire on his way to the throne.

-The only one present who might offer keener insight into Lord Corlys’s wishes is the princess Rhaenys

.

- Indeed, your grace.

- It was my husband’s will that Driftmark pass through Laena’s first child… Baela Targaryen. His mind never changed. Nor did my support of him. As a matter of fact, my granddaughter and Prince Aemond  have informed me of their desire to break their betrothal. Prince Aemond instead wishes to marry for love, he wishes to marry my granddaughter, Rhaena. - The Lady in question stood with a smile on her face while looking at her prince. - Prince Daemon grants his daughters the choice. And Baela will carry the legacy of our name with her, it does not matter who she choses to take as husband.

The talk around the room erupted, Alicent Hightower looked disgusted.

- Well, the matter is settled. I hereby reaffirm Lady Baela of house Targaryen and Velaryon as heir to Driftmark, the Driftwood throne, and the next Lady of the Tides.

- You break law… and centuries of tradition to install your daughter as heir. Yet you dare to tell me who deserves to inherit the name Velaryon. No! I will not allow it.

- Allow it? Do not forget yourself, Vaemond.

- Her children would be no true Velaryon. You may run your house as you see fit, but you will not decide the future of mine. I will not see it end on account of this.

- Say it.

- This is breaking years of tradition in order to accommodate that whore!

- I will have your tongue for this. - The King responded.

Everyone present gasped when Vaemond’s head detached from his body, Aemond Targaryen stood proudly while looking at the corpse.

- He can keep his tongue.

No one dared to question anything afterwards.

With that being said, i will not change how i wrote

Chapter Text

That night, the King had only one wish after such a long day, for his entire family to be present for one last time before the stranger decided to take him away. But even then, it seemed as though the family was separated. To his right, his darling daughter. The crown Princess sat next to her husband, followed by her four oldest children, their spouses, and both her step-daughters.

Baelon, Viserys, Visenya and her four grandchildren sat in separate tables with their nursemaids, being constantly supervised by Helaena, who much preferred their company, and Rhaenyra, who could not be apart from her babies.

The crown princess's three youngest looked after their nieces and nephews just as their brother and sister looked after them. Visenya was thrilled to have other girls to play with, she adored Sarra and the feeling was mutual. All children were utterly joyful when watching over the new little baby girl. Aegon joked they acted as good old friends meeting in a tavern, laughing loudly and sharing made up stories.

To Viserys’s left, his wife, their three sons and their grandfather. The entire family had their eyes closed as Alicent Hightower said the prayers. When she mentioned Vaemond, Rhaenyra threw a stern look in her son's direction, and he opened his eyes as if he knew she would do that. She could deal with the dead man, but having him laugh at him would only end up in an unwanted lection from her unfortunate step-mother.

-This is an occasion for celebration, it seems. My grandson Aemond will marry his step-sister and further straighten the bonds between our houses. - The queen sighted in disapproval, and Prince Aemond looked ready for the second murder of the day. - And sooner than later our prince Daeron.. the elder that is. - the King laughed. - Will also be a husband to darling Cassandra. - The King looked at the young couple, who were surprisingly not awkward, they had grown up together as good friends, siblings even, the prospect of being anything else was quite odd, but not entirely awful. Aegon knew those looks they gave each other too well.

 - A toast to our rising house of the dragon! - Aegon shouted, it wasn't enough to shut his grandsire though.

- It both gladdens my heart and fills me with sorrow to see these faces around the table. The faces most dear to me in all the world, yet grown so distant from each other… in the years past. My own face is no longer a handsome one, if indeed it ever was. But tonight, I wish you to see me  as I am. Not just a king,  but your father. Your brother. Your husband, and your grand sire. Who may not, it seems, walk for much longer among you. - Viserys' speech left a strange atmosphere around the room. All were surprised when the crown princess stood up next.

- I wish to raise my cup to Her Grace, the Queen. I love my father. But I must admit that no one has stood more loyally by his side than his good wife. She has tended to him with unfailing devotion in acomplashing her… duty. And for that, she has my gratitude. - Rhaenyra said, earning confused looks from her own family. Perhaps she didn’t truly mean it, but if it was her father’s last days, then let him think he managed something. She could deal with Alicent and her boys later. And if there were still ground for peace, she would take it. For her family's sake.

Queen Alicent followed with her own toast. Throughout the years Daemon enjoyed watching the woman in the tightrope. She thought herself so high and mighty, but had to walk with her three dornish boys around the castle. She was the King’s wife, and she gave him sons, but was much too surprised when noticed people would prefer the Realm’s delight over her hidden secreto.

Now, maybe it finally dawned on her, her husband would not live forever to defend and provide for them, and her father had disherited her in all but name. And after way too many years looking down upon her step-daughter, she hoped to reach for the old days, for the old them. Once, all they could’ve hoped for was being a true family, of having their children growing up together.

The rogue Prince had no sympathy for the Hightower. He wasn’t even mad when he discovered the curious appearance of his brother’s ‘’sons’’. Viserys was stupid, but the rest of the world was not, and as long as those boys didn’t represent a threat to his niece, he would do them no harm. His opinion changed when his son lost his eye, he barely knew the prince at the time, but he was Rhaenyra’s, and that was all that mattered. An outsider was allowed to scar a Targaryen prince and walk unpunished.

For Rhaenyra, the final sip of hope that any good could come from her step-mother died when her little girl was born. Visenya’s birth lasted three days, the maester said it was difficult, but not dangerous. Daemon wasn’t so sure, he remembered his mother, his cousin and Laena. He was by her side every hour, the children spent the time praying to all the Gods who could listen.

When she was born, she was so small, so fragile, but she was here, and her and his wife were alive. Their happiness and relief were gone when one of Cunt’s maids entered the room saying the Queen wanted to see the baby immediately. He does not recall everything he yelled at his brother and his whore after that. He knew it was partially responsible for all the bad words his children use. But she never pulled that one in his good-daughter when she had her son at the Keep. It kept her place for some time.

The hand had offered an arrangement to little Visenya to marry Joffrey, then he wanted to betrothed Lucerys to Rhaena. Each and every time he was shut down. In the council, Aemond pointed out the disrespect of him offering a bastard to his royal sisters. The humiliation was enough to Otto Hightower never again Cross their path, it was a losing game.

The evening continued in surprising calmness.

Prince Jacaerys also toasted in honor of his nephews, in good will. The poor boy wasn't at fault for his family's disgrace, and Rhaenyra did feel sympathy for him despite everything.

Princess Helaena followed with her own well wishes for her sisters.

- I would like to toast to Rhaena and Cassandra! They’ll be married soon. You need not to be worried, if they are anything like my husband they are just as nervous. And I know they are, because I'm their big sister and I know everything. - The family laughed knowingly, Helaena’s dreams seemed to have calmed down over the years, she would still say strange things, but nothing that worried her or her family. It seemed she saw a much far away reality, that was what little Baelon always said.

- I also would like to say a few words. - Cassandra announced. - I should like toasting in honor of my new family! And my soon-to-be-husband. - Rhaenyra could swear she saw Daeron blush. - And to my good mother, I would like to give my thanks for the support in this difficult journey. Aliandra and Baela must share that feeling all too well. - Both women nodded in agreement - When I came to King's Landing for Aegon's wedding I remember Lady Jeyne Arryn saying “In a world of men, us women should always support each other.” And I find comfort in knowing we'll always have one another. - The Lady spoke with a smile on her face and watery eyes but still with much pride. - To our Lady of the Tides! And To our future Queen!

- It fills my heart with joy having the entire family here. I cannot express how Cassandra's words meant for me. Together we walk towards another golden age for the Seven Kingdoms. And I'm thankful to have you all by my side helping me. - Rhaenyra said with tears in her eyes. - A toast to our family! - The princess was also emotional, there was a time when she thought she could drown in her tears and die with the sorrow of her heart. She long forgot this feeling, she looked around the room to the family she build as a reminder she would never be alone again.

 - Let us have some music! - Aliandra shouted.

In the good spirit of the evening, Prince Daeron got up and asked his betrothed for a dance. As Aemond did with Rhaena, Aegon asked Baela after his wife's refusal in favor of her dinner. Even the little children danced.

Prince Jacaerys had gotten up and asked his niece to dance, her brothers didn’t seem so happy with it. Helaena had a special place in the princes’ hearts, being their only sister for so long, so caring and loving, their mother had taught them it was their duty to care for one another, Helaena was the most cared for.

All hell was waiting to break loose when the King retired for the night.

—-----------------------------------------

They were taught by their father, bastards were beasts by nature, that was what he most repeated when alive, each time he learned they were spending time with their uncles.

Aemond knew of his mother’s good heart, and understood why she wouldn’t talk ill of his grandisire’s wife’s sons. But if she didn’t think bad of the Hightower boys surely she would’ve tried keeping any sort of relationship with them. Aemond hoped his mother’s kindness didn’t cloud her judgment when time came to punish those insults.

Everything got much worse when they brought the pork out and Prince Aemond saw the smirk on that bastard's face.

- I wish to make a final tribute. To the health of my dear uncles. Even though we have lived under the same roof for so long, we are rarely granted your presence. I assume you being here must remind my dear sister Aliandra of her home, does it not, sister?

- Aemond. - He heard his step-father’s laughing and his mother looking with firm eyes. But his betrothed intervention was enough to shut him up.

- Silly, is it not? They must have taken after a distant relative I'm sure. - Rhaena tried helping.

- We´re the sons of the King, not savages, nephew. - Lucerys said, the first word he spoke the entire night to the other side of the table. Not pleasing Princess Aliandra a bit.

- I wonder where they could’ve gotten their beautiful eyes and hair as dark as coal. Cole. - Daeron couldn’t help but start laughing, indulging his good sister’s comment.

- I dare you say that again!

- Why? T’was a compliment. Do you not think your features are beautiful? - Aegon wouldn’t normally get involved in such conversations, not since that firm talk with his mother all those years ago, but the tone the boy used with his wife didn’t please him, she said no lie afterall.

Helaena barely kept up with the verbal altercation before the fight began. Aemond effortlessly beated Jacaerys, while Aegon kept Lucerys from getting involved. All ignoring their mothers’s pleas. Otto Hightower said his goodbyes without a care for the entire affair.  It was Daemon Targaryen who, at last, took his step-son away from Alicent’s boy.

- That is enough!. To your quarters!  - The princess ordered.

- I’ll accompany the children back to the nursery. - Helaena said. - Cassandra and Rhaena left the room after saying farewell, the Lady of Winterfell followed the maids, looking out for the children, who seemed curious about the fight.

- I was merely expressing how proud I am of our family, good-mother. Though it seems the princes aren’t proud of theirs.

Rhaenyra went near her second son and whispered. - Do have your opinions, but do know when and where to express them. I thought the lot of you had already learned that. - She looked at her two oldest boys.

- They insulted my people. - Aliandra responded.

- They will insult anyone to feel better about themselves. Let them. - Baela joined, she too was tired from all of this.

- They did deserve it though. - Aegon said, looking at his wife.

- Not the little boy. - And although she was firm, she was not as hard on them as Baela thought she would be. Her step-mother did not tolerate fights amongst their kin.

They all knew better than to fight with Rhaenyra. The stepstones weren't as tough, Daemon once said. They followed her order and retired for the night.

When morning came, the entire Red Keep seemed to have taken in the energy of last night supper. It felt as though a dark cloud had surrounded all of the Kingdom.

The King was dead. Long Live the Queen!

Notes:

So the fic is coming to an end. Just to give you all a heads up. Without the dance there is not much content. But i'll do something like this, next chapter will very likely be the coronation. Following i'll do a chapter to each of Rhaenyra's kids and their own children, just so you can meet them. Aegon's son was named after Rhaenyra's grandson who was a great King, so that's where the story will follow after.

If you have any sugestions, please comment them.
I hope you'll like it!!!

Chapter Text

-Aren't you nervous? - Aegon asked his mother in a trembling voice.

-Why would I be? I've been preparing for this moment for years.

-You have prepared me for this moment for years as well. And I would certainly be nervous.  - Aegon fidget the rings on fingers, just as his mother did when something was bothering her.

-You’ll be a great King, do you know that? - She said looking at her first-born. - Elinda, dear! - Rhaenyra addressed her lady who was braiding her hair for the coronation. - Would you please let me have a moment alone with my son?

After she left, the Queen looked at the man her little baby had become.

-Did you know your grandsire named you? Your father had already picked another name, but I never knew what that was. My father said he wanted to name you Aegon, and we all complied. - Rhaenyra had a strange feeling about her grief, she had mourned the loss of her father long ago. She spent nights wide awake with her husband complaining, waiting for her father to grow a spine. And when he did, he died. Three moons had passed, and she was still waiting for that awful feeling she had when her mother died take over. It never did.

-I didn't actually know that. - Aegon smiled a little. He too was at odds with everything that was happening, his mother would soon be crowned, and one day, he would be after her. - What do you think father wanted to name me?

-If i could take a guess, he probably would have named you Jason as well. - Rhaenyra laughed. - He tried putting forth a Lannister name for all of you. Aemond was supposed to be Tyland, after we couldn't use it on Helaena. But your father went hunting and came back only three days after the birth! I was so mad I named him myself!

-I believe uncle once said one of us should have been named after him. - Aegon was also in good humor, but that soon drifted away. - I was named after such a great figure. Sometimes I fear I will never be able to live up to that.

-We don't choose our destiny, Egg. It chooses us.

 -It's just… I'm not like you.

-In what way, sweet boy? - Aegon remembered his mother calling him that for his entire childhood. He was never bothered by it even when he was older, but he supposed one day she just stopped. He felt a hint of jealousy every time he heard her saying that to his little brothers. But they were babies and he was twenty. She called his own son that now.

-I'm not so perfect. - His mother cupped his face and kissed his head.

-I am anything but. My father looked after me and helped to prepare me for my duties. Your mother will do the same for you. I am already, each time I take notice of the great husband, father, brother and son you are. Everytime I look at you and your sibling… You are my greatest accomplishment. No crown matches your value. And the great man you are, is bound to become a great King. Don't ever forget this. One day, you will be preparing for your own coronation, many years a time hopefully. - Mother and Son shared a laugh, both with tears in their eyes. - And your prince will be saying this very same thing to you. And you'll know exactly how I feel right now. Oh darling! If you could only see yourself from where I'm standing. The rest, time will teach you. Do not fret. I am already so proud of you.

Aegon hugged his mother and followed her into the great hall where her coronation would take place.

—---------------------------------------

Rhaenyra Targaryen walked with pride towards the new era about to begin. As she passed, the swords held by their knights lowered at her pace. She could hear the High Septon shouting a grand speech she couldn't make out.

When arriving at the steps she could see her family, once again united.

Her oldest son stood beside the throne, both waiting for her, his wife and son next to him. Helaena, Aemond and Daeron stood in row following. A couple of steps down, stood their spouses, and both her step daughters. Her oldest grandchildren and her three youngest were next. All dressed in Black and red.

The crowd was made of Lords from all seven Kingdoms forward, and the rest was the smallfolk. In the front row, Tyland and Ceira Lannister stared proudly, Lord Baratheon looked right at his daughter the entire time,Alicent Hightower and her sons looked worried. She thought them stupid, if she wanted to kill them, they would be dead, but they were not Daemon and Aemond were more than happy to change that. She'd much rather keep them close instead of giving them a reason to rebel.

When she arrived at the top of the stairs leading to the throne, Princess Rhaenys received her with a kiss upon her forehead and the hand of the King pin near her heart.

-For a long and lasting reign. - She whispered.

Rhaenyra kneeled in front of the septon, her crown given to him by Aemond. He continued his words, and proceeded with the known ritual.

-May the smith lend strength from his sword…

The moment the crown touched her head, she knew she had done it, she was Queen.

-Let the seven bear witness Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen!

The Septon helped her up and bowed. She did not follow their religion, and they had no true respect for her family, but they either backed her up, or would suffer the consequences of supporting Hightowers, the fate was only one, dragon fire. They chose the first.

One by one, her family bowed in respect.

-Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, first of her name, Queen of the Andals, and the Rhoynar and the first men, Lady of the Seven Kingdoms, and protector of the Realm!

Once she turned to the crowd, they already had their heads low, and she spoke, at last.

-Today you witness history - slowly they rose - and together we will bring forth a new order!

And soon applause and cheers filled the room!

-To the Realm's delight!

-Long Live the Queen!

Notes:

Finally an update! Sorry for taking so long, school is Hard!

My birthday is in 8 days, so that's exciting!

Again i wanted to thank the support!

Chapter Text

142 a.c

Viserys woke up startled. He felt himself shaking and his blanket being taken from him. Was he under attack? Should he be preparing for war?  Was his family aware? Were they alright? Were they already dead and he was all alone?

Then he heard a laugh.

Baelon. Damn him! It was barely morning, the sun had just come up and he was demanding him to…

-Wake up! Wake up!

-Someone better be dead!

-Much more important! Do you know what day it is?

-The day I give in to my need to strangle you?

-Today is the day I get to compete in the tourney!

Viserys was a year younger than his brother, although he acted much more mature, people said. It wasn't hard if Baelon acted like a five year old most of the time despite being almost ten and eight. He prayed every night for poor Allana, having been swooned by this idiot and accepted his proposal.

-And what does that have anything to do with me?

-You will be my helper of course! You promised, remember?

-Did i? I can't seem to recall that. Anyway, you wish for me to be your lady-in-waiting then? - Viserys said getting up from the bed. - Why don't you get Visenya to do this?

-Because she would make me pay her! The little pest made father write a contract and everything!

-I should've thought about that! Now I have to do this for free.

-So you really are doing it! - Baelon said with excitement.

-I did promise. - Viserys smiled at his brother, his annoyance long forgotten.

Viserys and Baelon had a bond like no other, it reminded Rhaenyra of Aemond and Aegon growing up. They were so close in age that they even shared a cradle when sleeping in their parents room as babies.

They grew into fine young men. Without the pressure of the throne, both boys occupied their time as they pleased.

Viserys was his mother's loyal shadow, calm and clever, he spent most of the time in the library or with his dragon, silverwing was his ride.  He was a tall and handsome prince, who struck a longing impression to the nobles residing in the keep.

Baelon was quite the opposite. Ever his father's son, the prince was a talented warrior. He took pleasure in joining his younger sister's charity works, leading the hunting parties and training in the yard with his brothers. Beloved by the smallfolk, he was a kind, yet mischievous young man. Either seen in King's landing's streets, with his own dragon, stormcloud, or with his soon-to-be wife, the second daughter of the Lord of Starfall, whom he was helplessly in love with.

—------------------------------------

Although the Realm thrived, with nine children and twelve grandchildren it would be impossible for the Queen to provide a formal affair to each Milestone. Today was different though, for today marked the tenth anniversary of her coronation.

Rhaenyra tightened the grip in her husband's hand when they announced their son was the next to compete. Most of her children were gifted with their fighting skills, except Helaena, who had little interest in it. Baelon and Daeron were the only one that found excitement in these tourneys, each time Daeron was there she felt like her heart was up her throat. Baelon had won each turn so far, but she couldn't help but worry.

The whole family was together on the special occasion. The Lord and Lady of Winterfell had arrived a couple of days before, although only their twins had come with them, their other son was left in the care of their aunt Sara, much to the Queen's dismay, who longed to see her baby grandson, but was much pleased in meeting with her other two grandchildren again.

Crown Prince Aegon had come from Dragonstone with his wife and four of his five children a moon prior. His Aemma was sent as a ward to her grandfather in sunspear, to prepare for a throne that one day would be hers, and would make the trip with her uncle, her being too young to go all by herself and Morghul being too little to travel this far.

Aemond and Rhaena were the first to arrive. Coming from Casterly Rock with their son and daughter, even being incredibly busy, the prince refused to miss his little brother winning the tournament. And Rhaena was the main responsible for the organization of the days of celebration, therefore she took a lot of pride in her work.

Lady Baela and her husband, Geralt Celtigar, were late despite already being in the castle. Her sister kept making snarky remarks on what could possibly be keeping her from them.

Daeron and Cassandra had brought their two little ones along in their carriage. Two beautiful daughters, who were their father's entire pride and joy, though Lord Boremund was worried about their lack of a son, Rhaenyra was more than happy to indulge the idea of a new line of Baratheon ladies.

—-----------

Daemon sat on her right and Visenya at her left, both with the same worried expression on their face as the sound of the horses' steps grew louder and then…

-Prince Baelon of house Targaryen defeats Sir Westerling! Behold your champion!

The crowd's cheers seem to shake the ground. Rhaenyra caught her son riding his horse with the crown of the Queen of love and beauty. With his spear he laid the joint of flowers in his betrothed's lap.

-Would the lady honor me by accepting this humble gift? - The prince said with a grin.

-It would bring great happiness to me, your grace! - Allana responded eagerly.

The boy smiled at her in return, then turned to his father.

-If the King still holds the strength, perhaps he would be my next contender! - Baelon said, teasing his father who retired from these tournaments quite some time ago.

-Is that so? Let us see! Prince Baelon! Take out your sword! - And although said in jest, the son did in fact reach for his weapon while the father whipped the dark sister from his belt and made his way towards the ground where his son had gotten down from his ride.

-Kneel boy!

And so he did. This might have been the happiest day of the Prince's life, right there, his father made him knight.

-Today we toast to our prince's victory! To Baelon, the Brave!

With time, Rhaenyra grew accustomed with her husband and children's antics and theatricals. For the rest of the day, Visenya would call her brother “Baelon, the broken” for his seemingly inability to pay her for her good services as his shield, choosing their brother instead.

Prince Viserys toasted loudly and proudly, his brother was a true marvel. And Aemond would keep bragging about teaching everything he knew, Daemon would join the jest and remind him the same goes for them both.

The victorious prince toasted to his mother's long lasting reign and his future wife.

Notes:

So i decided it would be interesting to put a couple of chapters about Daemon and Rhaenyra's three youngest. There will be this one for Baelon and Viserys, and another one for Visenya. No, i'm not going to lead with the "Visenya, the second, rider o cannibal" and stuff. I recently watched the 2017 little women series, so you might see a resemblence between Visenya and Amy. Because they're not the focus of this fic and maybe some of you might not want to read about them, these will be short chapters, just to have an idea of what they've been up to. Enjoy!

Chapter 16: The celebration continues

Chapter Text

Visenya was tired! She had run after her sister the entire day making sure everything was in its place for the seven day celebration.

-You will run your own household one day. It is better for you to be prepared. - Rhaena said while walking at a fast pace, which Visenya found hard to follow.

-Lyonel said he would arrive later tomorrow. Maybe I should head to my chambers and prepare!

-I promise you will have time for everything! But you should focus on this now.

Visenya knew she was lucky. Although her sisters had good marriages, she was aware they were hard to come by. Princesses didn't have a choice, her mother didn't, and was at childbed at her age with her oldest brother. Her grandmother had already suffered a fair share at fifteen.

She and Lyonel Tyrell were childhood companions since his mother came to the Queen's service as her head Lady-in-waiting and they were good friends even though he was a couple of years her senior. They left a while later after his father passed away and he became Lord of Highgarden.

Had she not met Lyonel, she might have chosen one of her unwed brothers if it meant fulfilling their house's traditions, she thought them nice enough. Her mother told her “nice enough” wasn't all she should be looking for in a future husband. Viserys had straight up refused, saying he would not marry at all, whereas Baelon had been courting his now betrothed Allana Dayne.

She didn't understand what her mother meant until Lyonel's return to court last year. They were set to marry as soon as she turned six and ten, the same age as all her sisters and brothers when they were wed.

She was excited! He was building a dragon pit near his castle for Aenris. Her babe was one spoiled Lady, just like Syrax, who would like a place for herself.

Helaena had named the she-dragon just as she named Visenya. It meant “rise again”, but she never understood the meaning behind it. When she told that to her sister, she just answered that it was a good thing.

—-----------------------------------------

-Visenya!

-Lyonel!

The couple encountered each other in the hall where the feast had already begun.

-I thought you would be arriving tomorrow?

-Well yes, but it just happened I couldn't wait to see you!

Visenya was a formidable young girl, spoiled rotten by her parents and siblings, she was taught from a very young age how a proper Lady should act. That was not it.

-Well, suppose you should like me that much! - She said with a confidence that quickly faded when she let out her pig laugh that made her betrothed giggle.

-I'll have to say, that is quite charming!

-Do not jest! How awful!

-I’m terribly sorry then! - The Lord was still laughing though. - Why don't we get past this and you show me your new painting you keep writing about?

The princess quickly called her lady to act as a chaperone and they both headed to Visenya's apartments where she showed him her new artwork. It was easy to acknowledge the great talent Visenya had with her brush, Lyonel had made up his mind already that his princess was far more beautiful than any of those portraits. And as improper as it was, he could not help leaning in and kissed her.

Notes:

I've always imagined how spoiled Visenya would be had she survived, she's a cutie pie! And an artist in my head.

Next chapter will be about Alicent Btw

Chapter 17: Mercy

Summary:

The ghost of Maegor's holdfast

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

As she passed though Maegor's Holdfast, Visenya noticed the strange movement going around. This wasn't entirely new, for episodes like this had happened before, but she realized they were becoming far more common these days.

-What is it with her now? - The princess asked a servant who was passing by.

-There you are madam! - The septa said firmly. - You know the Queen hates it when you come here! Who knows? Maybe whatever she has is contagious!

-What does she have anyway? - Visenya turned to the maid.

-Mostly sadness, sometimes anger, and very few occasionally,  regret.  - The woman said in a trembling voice.

-What is it now? - The princess asked curiously.

-I cannot tell. She wants to see the Queen. Says that she will defy her father and they will be able to ride on dragonback and eat cake!

-She seems to get more mad by the hour. What does that even mean?

-I mostly don't know. She talks as if her father isn't already dead. And she keeps asking for her sons.

-Does my mother knows?

-The Queen is already informed and says she will come to see her later.

-Then it's all taken care of.

“Why should she?” Visenya thought as she was dragged away by the septa. I had never heard a good story about Alicent Hightower. Aemond says she was a disgrace to our family by birthing bastards and claiming them as the king's trueborns. That she made their mother suffer.

She was far too young when the former Queen consort recluted herself from the world in her chamber. She was more of a ghost, the kind that appeared in the scary stories her father used to tell her.

After her mother heard of a rumour about Otto Hightower trying to get support for his grandson's claim about a year after her coronation, she had executed King Viserys’ hand for treason.

Though there wasn't any proof against his daughter, Rhaenyra had made Alicent swear a public oath to her. Visenya didn't even remember what the woman looked like, but she recalled the expression of humiliation as she acknowledged her mother as the true Queen and heir to the Iron throne.

Her mercy had been a pillar for the princess, that her mother would've shown sympathy even toward someone who wished her ill. She was always a spoiled girl, a selfish one, but after that day she walked to her mother's altar of the fourteen flames and promised she'd do better. Perhaps this would explain her curiosity about the former Queen, what was about her that her mother found redeemable that she would keep her in comfort and treat her with kindness at this time?

When she was walking down the corridor she heard a strange voice calling a name, not her name though.

-Rhaenyra! Rhaenyra! - Visenya looked around and saw her mother nowhere near. But the woman dressed in an uncoloured gown was screaming at her. First with anger, then with something resembling kindness, she was scared as the figure walked towards her and her septa tried hard to get her to keep walking, but she wanted to see her, she wanted to see the woman her mother had spared.

She looked nothing like a Queen. She wore a sleeping gown, loose hair and looked as though she had never slept.

-Rhaenyra! Where have you been? I've been looking everywhere for you! My father! He made me see the King! I swear I did not want to, and he made me, I couldn't say no! Please forgive me! Please… please…

Alicent kept murmuring, on her knees.

-It 's alright.  It's all going to be well. - The princess helped her up.

As the woman held her and calmed herself she tried to figure out what was behind those wide open eyes, cracked voice and her words, but one the maids came after her, apologizing to the princess.

-She's not well, your grace. Will take her back to her chambers, do not worry! - The Lady took the green Queen from her embrace.

She did not respond, and on her way out she saw her mother walking towards the room. She never knew what her mother said to her. Years later she would ask her, and only got a half-reply: ‘'Twas words exchanged between two old friends.”

Later that day, the news took the Red Keep. Alicent Hightower was dead.

Notes:

I wanted to give her storyline proper closure, despite it all she was also a victim. Next chapter we wil see a bit more of Rhaenyra's reaction to her death as well as the fate of her sons.

Also, i've heard about the ao3 author curse, been waiting for it to happen for a while, still hasn't, although i did came down with the flu, i'm a bit scared ngl

Chapter 18: No one mourns the wicked

Summary:

The after effect of the Dowager Queen's death

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

His father had loathed the woman, and had wanted to call for the execution of her and her sons once his grandsire died. His mother denied though, she claimed if the King himself had shown kindness and care for those boys, then so would she.

Aegon had been surprised by the news of the former Queen's death, more so when he noticed his mother… grieving?

He had heard stories as a teenager of a princess and her lady, who were so close, attached to the hip, sisters by soul until they were torn apart by the lady's betrayal. Said Lady had sneaked into the princess’ father's chamber at night, seduced him after the Good Queen's death and elevated herself far beyond her station.

-Alicent and I were once as close as you and your brother are. - His mother told him in a sad voice. Throughout the years, his mother had called the woman many different names. Officially, she referred to her as Queen, the Green queen as well, in particular she would still call her Lady, sometimes she would have some really awful names, most of them given by his father or step-father, after his grandsire's death she was Dowager Queen. But now she was Alicent, simply Alicent.

-What changed? - Helaena asked.

-Betrayal. Anger. From both sides. The moment she married my father I had told myself she was dead to me, but I was soon a wife, and there was no time for mourning then. And when I became a mother - she smiled at both of them - I realized I had no need for her as I once did. I filled my heart in loving you and your siblings.

-And what now? Are you in mourning?

-I suppose. These last couple of months she had been getting worse. There was nothing physically wrong with her. She was just… not well. - He could see his mother's tears running down her face. - I don't grieve for that woman who wore green and declared war on me, but I do mourn the girl who would walk through these halls with me and told me the court's gossip and shared my laugh and wiped my tears.

Aegon held his mother's hand, and everything was quiet for a moment. Her children were her one true love, pure and unquestionable. As a baby, Aegon would only stop his never ending crying when his mother held him. But Rhaenyra's heart only stopped hurting once he was in her arms. Helaena was a fussy little girl to all Rhaenyra's poor maids, but would be the calmest child by her mother's side. The Queen always thought that it was proof that they loved her as much as she loved them.

-Grandmother? Are you alright? - Aemma had entered the room unnoticed.

-Everything's fine, sweet girl. - The queen said recomposing herself and embracing her granddaughter.

-I assume there's a good reason for your visit. - Aegon said, looking at his little girl. That's when he noticed a flick of Targaryen blonde hair, it was Rhaenyra, the younger, standing in the doorway. He could not help his smile, with the rush with the end of the festivities and the news of the dowager Queen's death, he barely had time for his children. - The both of you have been taught it's wrong listening to private conversations, no? And you should be in bed anyway.

-Come here you two! - Rhaenyra said, with much better humour, happy to see the girls.

-We've just been meaning ask…

-Ask what?

-Will there be a ceremony? - Little Nyra asked.

-A funeral, she meant, for Alicent Hightower. - Aemma completed.

That was a topic being discussed at the council that day. Alicent wasn't loved by neither the nobles nor the smallfolk, who saw no reason to spend money on a woman who provided nothing to Realm, on the other hand, she was the wife of a King and the mother to three princes.

-There will be a private affair to honor her. - The Queen answered

-Will they be allowed?

-Of course dear. - Aegon responded, knowing exactly who his daughter refered to.

Despite the obvious mutual dislike Rhaenyra and her step-mother shared for one another, the more the years passed and the Queen's reign was solidified, her relationship with her half-brothers grew into something else beside indifference.

Although she could not afford to leave any loose end in the reach of the Hightowers, she promised she would offer the boys the best life in said circumstances.

The oldest, Jacaerys, had become a knight of the Queen's guard as Harwin Strong's successor; he was good friends with Daeron, who had given the suggestion. Unable to hold land,  a title, take a wife or to father any children, he was a man known for his honor, and had proved his loyalty with the passing years, earning him the kindness and trust from his family. He was close with Daeron, Baela and Helaena, and helped to train the Queen's youngest boys He was Aegon's youngest daughter, Rhaenyra, sworn shield. Thus her sympathy towards him.

The second son, Lucerys, had been sent to the Citadel in order to become a maester, the day the Queen announced it, the Lord of Casterly Rock toasted in almost kindness to his nephew. Glad with the idea of never seeing him again.

-Perhaps he will find uncle Vaegon and they will share stories of our heritage.

The Queen toasted to that, being that the way of Aemond showing his forgiveness.

The youngest, Joffrey, was sent by Rhaenyra to Dorne as a ward. The Queen had great empathy for him, being only twelve when the King died, in Dorne there wouldn't be a problem when it came to the word “bastard”, and her good-daughter's family would keep an eye on the boy. He came at least thrice a year to King's Landing to visit his brother and mother.

But even those visits didn't soothe Alicent's heart. One day, she told her oldest to cut the throat of prince Aegon. Tears ran down Jace's eyes when he recounted the story to his half-sister.

-I'm glad. It would be too bad for one to go without their loved one getting to say goodbye. - Aemma was fierce, yet kind, just as her mother. The princess was also incredibly sad for she was close with her great-uncle Joff, who had taken her and stayed with her in Dorne.

-I whole heartily agree. - their aunt said. - And where is Jace?

-He's training with Baela in the backyard. I think he's sad. - Rhaenyra, the elder, nodded in understatement.

-Will you also attend the affair, grandmother?

-Yes… I suppose I will. - Although she had an uncertain tone in her voice.

-As much as we appreciate your loving act, that is no matter for us to discuss with you. Do leave your poor grandmother alone. Let us find what your mother and brothers have been up to. - Aegon knew his mother's mind as well as his own, she offered a smile as he and his daughters left the chambers, he knew she needed time for herself, still at odds with everything that was happening and Helaena could provide better company in those terms.

—-------------------------------

Alicent Hightower's funeral was a small and private affair in the seven's faith. The only ones in attendance were the Queen, her sworn shield, Sir Erryk, her oldest son and youngest daughter, the high sparrow,  Alicent's younger brother and her oldest and youngest son, since Lucerys could not return from the Citadel. Nor her uncle or cousins made themselves present. But Talya, the maid who had taken care of her in her last years had weeped as one would've cried a friend.

The dowager Queen had been buried next to her husband by order of the Queen.

In the streets, life went on the same. And to show them not in mourning or mayhaps, respect. That day, no one wore black

Notes:

Tomorrow is my birthday, yay
I realy wanted to write grandma Rhaenyra! So cute

And i did get the title from the musical wicked, both related to green as well, pretty cool.

Chapter Text

145 a.c

Carmilla ran through the halls of Storm's End till she reached her sister's room. Still in her night gown, she laid on Danella's bed and kissed her.

-Wake up sister! - Danella woke up confused, but smiled at her sister all the same. - It is time!

-Time for what?

-For the baby! It 's coming! Mother is in labor!

-Then we must see her! - The oldest said in joy.

Both girls followed the line of servants in rushing down the stairs.

-Wait! Father said he does not want us there, remember? - Danella, as the oldest by a year, was trying to set a good example for her sister. Carmilla had a gift for mischief their father indulged, making Nella's and their mother's job hard.

-But it is for a good cause. - Milla whispered in response.

Danella sighed but did not argue, she took her sister's arm and together they hid behind the stairs, in hope to see a glimpse of their mother each time one of the maids opened the door. Hours had passed and they had not moved.

-My Prince! - exclaimed Moira, the ladies’ governess. - I went to both their rooms and could not find either of the girls! We searched for quite some time and still nothing!

-How can it be? Hundreds of people in this place and none saw my daughters? - Daeron wasn't worried though, he knew of his girls’ antics all too well, he thought they must've been playing hide and seek in some further corner of the house. But he did take notice of two little figures hidden where his eyes could barely reach.

-Well, then perhaps they should not like to meet their sibling… - The prince said with a smirk on his face, too similar to his own first-born.

-Yes we would! - Carmilla shouted, coming out of their hidden spot.

-Oh, there you are! - Daeron responded with humour. - I thought you'd be disinterested in meeting the baby, since you've been too preoccupied with spying.

-We would like to meet the baby very much!

-Very well. - The man said with mischief in his voice. - Follow me ladies!

Both girls followed their father through the door they've been watching the past hours, to find their mother laying on the bed with a bundle in her arms.

-Girls! Come here. - The sisters joined their mother on the bed as their father sat on a chair nearby.

-Do you think she would like to play with us? - Carmilla said with the innocence of a ten year old.

-I think he would like that. - Their mother answered joyfully.

-He? It 's a boy? - Danella's voice was low and her face expressed her worry.

-His name is Orys. - Daeron looked at his daughters.

After half an hour of the girls watching over the babe and never ending questions, Daeron proceeded to worry about the amount of energy Cassandra had spent.

-Perhaps it is best for us to leave your mother to rest.

-But…

-No, your mother is tired and the babe needs to sleep. Both of you will go with Moira and apologize, the woman almost lost her mind going after you.

-Please, forgive us, Moira. - The girls said in unison.

-Nothing to fret! You should be preparing in fact. - The woman amused the ladies with her good humour.

-Prepare for what?

-In a week a time we'll have a ball in honor of your brother. - Daeron responded.

-Oh!

-Is very important. The Queen will come as well. - He knew this would cheer them up.

-Really? Grandmother! Will she stay the night? - Milla could not stop running over her own words till they became impossible to understand.

-Calm yourself. She will come for the celebrations and to meet your brother.

-Why would she come all the way from King's Landing to meet the babe? - Nella was wary.

-She traveled to meet all your cousins and you. Why would this be any different? - Daeron noticed his eldest standing still and looked over at his wife who was still speaking to Milla.

-Are you alright dear? - Cassandra said, worried.

-Of course. Can I be excused? - Her mother nodded, there was nothing to be done at this moment. She wasn't harsh, simply hurt. And Cassandra knew why.

—------------------------------------

Cassandra entered the room where her daughters played inside the cabin of blankets they built.

-Can I come in? - She asked in humour. Cassandra had been bed ridden for three days, her husband insisted she rested, but she could not simply stand still while others resolved her duties for her, especially with Orys’ celebration around the corner, and Danella's bad mood.

-Yes! Come! - The girls were playing with their dolls gifted by their aunt Helaena for Nella's last nameday. - Are you going to play with us, mother?

-I have not come here to play, my darlings. I've come to talk about something serious with you.

-Is it about the succession? - Danella said sadly.

-Yes. It is.

-Orys will be your heir won't he? You've come to tell me that. That I will be put aside for the boy.

-My dear, of course not! We would never do that! Why would you think such a thing?

-It's what i've been told.

-Told by whom?

-Grandfather Mund used to tell me that. When you and father had a boy he would be heir. A son would carry the Baratheon name, I could not.

-But I'm not a boy, am I?

-No, but it is different.

-How so? Your grandmother is not a man and she is Queen. Your aunt Baela is Lady of the Tides and she is not a boy.

-But that's only because they ran out of options.

-That's not true, your grandmother has half-brothers and Baela had male relatives. They are in their position because they are capable, just as I know you are, dear. And I need you to act on it.

-Perhaps Orys will grow to be more capable than me.

-But that's impossible! - Carmilla interrupted her sister in complete revolt.

-I watch over this castle and these people, I look after Stormlands and take care of that stone throne. A throne that will one day be yours, Danella.

The girl simply nodded with a serious expression on her face with courage and understatement.

-Than I will take care of it just as you do.

-That's what we've been hoping for. - Cassandra held both her daughters close.

-And your brother will be just as supportive i'm sure! Because there will be years to come to teach you to live up to your birthright dear. It is yours, and do let any one take it from you.

-I would never!

—--------------------------------

-Your majesty. My good-Mother. I present to you your grandson, Orys of house Baratheon!

Cassandra announced as she gave her babe in Rhaenyra's arms.

-Well done dear! The pair of you. - It did not matter how many of them were, the Queen always made sure to meet each grandchild properly.

At the age of forty and eight, the queen was still as much a beauty as the time when people called her ‘’the Realm’s Delight’’. Her spirit was also not gone, for Rhaenyra refused to be parted from her dragon, and still took to the skies with her spoiled lady with frequency, and many times she traveled on dragonback to see her children, no matter their ages. Although during the past year things weren’t looking so good, her husband’s health was declining slowly.

When the Lady of Casterly Rock had offered to stay with her father, the King refused. ‘’As long as I keep my good looks, death is an old friend I will receive in my home gladly.’’ Daemon still did not complain when the number of visits from his children went up. The King still maintains his good humour, although bothered by only seeing his blood wyrm through his window.

-Aren’t you going to spend the night here with us, grandmother? - Carmilla asked, clearly bored with the formal introduction and the whole affair. The Queen just laughed.

-Well dear, I would love to spend more time with you, but I need to get back to my duties and to your grandfather. Perhaps you two and your brother should like to visit us soon.

-But is no fun! You get to ride a dragon and make the trip like this! - the girl snapped her fingers. - And we did not get a dragon, so we have to take the kingsroad and it takes ages!

-You can always ride on Syrax with me, or in Tessarion with your father.

The dragon's distribution became an issue as soon as Helaena had her twins and no one knew if they should receive dragon eggs or not. Rhaenyra was adamant about all her children receiving an egg on their cribs, Sunfyre and Tessarion both came from Syrax’s clutch, as well as Viserys’, Helaena’s and Aemond’s eggs that grew cold.

She offered her daughter the choice, but she said it would be useless since those would not hatch, and advised her mother to not give them away so carelessly, it was then decided the only one to carry the tradition was the first born heir.

The decision was met with strong pushback, especially from Aemond, but the Queen knew better than to ignore her daughter’s pleas. The Lord of Casterly Rock only relented when promised his son and daughter would be able to claim one of the dragons in the pit if they could, since Helaena did not argue, Rhenyra felt it was safe enough.

-Why must you go, grandmama? - Carmilla cried out.

-I have to go, I have duties to attend to, dear. - Rhaenyra smiled kindly.

-Then take me with you! - The little girl had a sad expression on her face resembling her father’s when the same age, as the queen recalled. Rhaenyra kissed her granddaughter's cheek.

-I’ll always have you in my heart, darling, but you need to stay here, with your sister.

-You would leave me so easily? - Danella asked her sister with a frown.

-I wouldn’t! Of course not. It is just that I think the people in King’s Landing would be very pleased to be in my wonderful presence!

-I'm sure they would! - And the Queen laughed as the sisters ran into the dance floor and spinned till the sun went down and rose again the next morning.

Notes:

So I'll start with the youngest (Daeron) and the last chapter will be Aegon.

This chapter is a bit boring, sorry about that.

I think I sort of lost the plot, I wanted to write an au to see the relationship between Rhaenyra and her siblings/children, but because I went in order,I ended up missing quite a few scenes ou things I wish to have seen, so I decided to write a bunch of one-shots of these, just of Rhaenyra with Aegon, Helaena, Aemond and Daeron as children/babies, also to see a bit more of her relationship with Jason and Alicent during that time.

Also, Daeron's daughters were heavily inspired by princess Isabel and princess Leopoldina from Brazil, look them up, their story is pretty interesting. The fancast for them is also the actresses that played them in a soap opera called "Nos tempos do imperador".

XoXo hope you like it!
