The Deal

Chapter 4

Notes:

I feel like the chapters are mostly going to be pretty short. Sorry if you like longer chapters, I'll see what I can do but no promises.

Chapter Text

It took a couple days for the news to reach her, and even longer than that for it to really sink in.

He was gone.

Roxanne found out a few days after the fact over casual office gossip with one of her friends that Trevor had left suddenly. No warning, no explanation, just gone. The man didn’t even clear out his desk before leaving town.

She was happy… or, she should be happy about that… right?

And it’s not like she wasn’t! No, she was definitely relieved that he was gone and she didn’t have to see him or work with him or anything like that.

He was gone and that was a good thing.

It’s just…

The nightmares didn’t go with him.

And even with the new locks and the key that would only work for her and the brainbots that still, over a week later, would see her home safely, she walked around her own apartment with a knife in her hand and her running shoes on.

She still wasn’t sleeping well (even with her brand-new night light). She still didn’t have much of an appetite. She found herself nervous and jumpy and some people at the office were starting to notice. Her supervisor even pulled her aside to have a ‘chat’ after she jumped a foot in the air when one of the co-anchors patted her on the shoulder. That was humiliating.

She could feel people looking at her funny, even if she couldn’t ever seem to catch them.

But she should be happy, now. The monster has been exorcised from her life and that will never not be a good thing. Never mind that her nerves were still shot and sometimes it felt like she was dancing on the last thread of her sanity.

Megamind followed through much faster than she ever thought he would and she was grateful.

She just couldn’t understand why, even with him gone, she was still left with all the anxiety and the night terrors and the fear.

She was actually relieved when she woke up with the bag over her head two weeks later. With Megamind there, she had no reason to be afraid. He and Minion would never hurt her.

So, she sat back in her (surprisingly comfy) chair and waited. They didn’t leave her waiting long but already this was the oddest kidnapping to date. Was she sitting on a couch? Why did it smell like Italian food?

She didn’t have much more time to think about it before the familiar footsteps of her captors made their way into the room.

“Miss Ritchi, we meet again.” Megamind began and the words were so casual and so typical, it was so nice that she actually felt the tension, that she didn’t even know was there, ease out of her frame and a light smirk dance across her lips.

“I believe you recall our deal…” his voice was much closer but there was a note of caution that was uncharacteristic of him. She could understand why though, she did make a bit of a fool of herself the last time she was here.

“I remember. I promised to do whatever you wanted for the next three kidnappings and I meant it. So, just name it.” She said, resigned to whatever silly, dumb or no doubt ridiculous thing he would have her do. Megamind was all about the show, after all.

“Minion! The bag!”

“Yes sir!” and she rolled her eyes. God, she could practically here minion giving a salute.

Suddenly the bag was pulled off her head and she squinted in the semi-bright room while her eyes adjusted… and then blinked. And blinked again.

No.

This… she could not be seeing what she thought she was seeing right now.

She wasn’t in the evil lair. She was in a living room? And she wasn’t sitting on a couch but actually on a lazy boy recliner. There was a big screen tv and the coffee table in front of her was filled with board games and a stack of movies. Megamind and Minion were standing in front of her… in their jammies?

Megamind had big fluffy slippers shaped like bats. Minion was wearing sushi pajamas.

Minion was wearing sushi pajamas?

Megamind was wearing sky blue jammies with rubber duckies on them and they were clearly a favorite set by how they were well worn and a little bit frayed on the edges.

For several minutes, no one said anything.

She stared at them. They stared at her.

Until, slowly, a smile broke out on her face. Her chin started quivering as she tried to hold it in but then she was laughing.

Loud and uncontrollable, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Oh my god! You guys look so cute!” she could barely get out between wheezing breaths.

She saw, through her tears, the boys giving each other a look. Megamind gave his head a little jerk in her direction and Minion wasted no time, leaping towards her and untying her hands.

Megamind sat down on the floor across from her, the coffee table between them, and gave her a serious look, pointing one gloved finger at her. “Whatever I want. You promised.”

Roxanne held up her hands, still giggling, but not trying to argue in any way. Instead, she copied him and slid down to the floor, leaning back against the chair, and poked at the stack of movies.

“So, what are we doing?”

Megamind grinned and gestured to the games stacked on the edge of the table. “I thought we would start with Scrabble and see how we feel after that. We have plenty of movies to choose from but I just grabbed a few to start. Which one should we play first? There’s Mean Girls, Galaxy Quest and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” He held up all three movies and looked at her like it was the most important decision she could possibly make.

She grinned, still laughing a little at the absurdity of everything that was happening right now, but nevertheless reached out and pointed to Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Megamind smiled wide and jumped up to put in the DVD. “Minion! Get the mozzarella sticks!”

“Right away, sir!” and off he ran into what Roxanne could only assume was the kitchen.

“Oh, hey minion?” she called out. He stopped in the doorway and spun around in his tank, waiting. “Do you guys have any wine?” she asked, hopefully.

The fish grinned. “Red or white?”

“Red please!” he gave her an actual salute and ran off like the amazing fish he was.

Megamind plopped back down in front of her and pulled out the scrabble from the top of the stack of games and started setting it up, handing her the bag full of letters and letting her choose first.

Minion came back a few minutes later with a plate of cheese sticks and a cooler filled with ice, sodas and a single bottle of red wine with a stemless wine glass.

She sat there, sipping her drink and watching the boys get the movie going and the game set up and for the first time in a long time, she couldn’t stop smiling.
