Notes:

HELLO! This story is being written solely because I had inspiration for 5 minutes and now here I am! All you, dear reader need to know is a few things!
> This story is not romance centric, but will have its moments (probably mostly between the main three)!
> The main four (i.e. the main trio and MC) are all 18+ and similar in age (THESE WILL BE CANON AGES IN THE STORY) because of the heavy content, no sexual NSFW will be present though!
> HEAVY CONTENT WILL BE AHEAD, I'LL PUT WARNINGS ON CHAPTERS IF I THINK THEY NEED THEM, BUT JUST BE MINDFUL!
> MC will be a foreigner – i don't plan on naming the country in the story – however ill probably throw in some of my own local slang to make it more believable (and fun) – as such, words like “mom” will be spelt “mum” because that is my way of spelling!
> MC IS GENDER NEUTRAL WITH NO SET PHYSICAL APPEARANCE, SO ANYONE CAN READ! PLEASE FORGIVE ME IF I USE ANY OTHER PRONOUNS THAN THEY/THEM, I USUALLY WRITE THESE CHAPATERS AT 4AM LOL
> Japanese will be underlined – English will appear as normal!
> If you caught this story before it was deleted, the story has changed from chapter 2, apologies!
> this symbol (*) will be next to words that require extra context or translations, of which can be found at the end in notes :)

Chapter 1: [01] A Scam And A Headache

Chapter Text

Being unemployed truly was a humiliation ritual. Practically grovelling at the feet of good-for-nothing companies to even allow you an interview, whilst simultaneously being ghosted and receiving no email to inform you that you were unsuccessful in your endeavours.

“I'm trying, I really am! I even tried going in person this time!” you stated down the phone, your mother, ever the lady, sputters curses down the speaker in response.

“It's been a month, and you still haven't found ANYTHING! The job market can't be that bad!” she started, and you could feel your eyes start to roll in preparation for her rant, “You'll be going to university soon, that student finance won't keep you going forever!”

“Yeah, yeah, you've told me a thousand times.” You feel something cold land on your head, and look up. The clouds have grown moody, maybe they overheard your conversation?

Another cold splash, and then another, and then another, until the sky is sobbing. Or maybe it's crying with laughter at your misery?

You rush underneath a shop's overhang as the older woman continues her triade.

“Look, I can't pay that stupid board without a job. There's nothing I can do but keep trying, okay?” you reason. It's true, you can't say you're thrilled about being made to pay to stay in the house you were forcibly born into, but it's true.

“You’re damn right! That's why you're not coming home until I see you're EMPLOYED!”

“WHAT!?” Bystanders seemed to side eye you as you practically screech down the phone, “YOU CAN'T DO THAT! I DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS!”

beep

That wicked witch hung up on you, and you groan at the revelation. Now you can't go back, you'd look like a kicked puppy with your tail between your legs, pride shattered in your hands. You'd show her! You'd get a job so good she'd wish she was you!

With a brand new resolve, you step out onto the pavement. The rain has turned torrential, the water seeping into the cracks of the ancient cobble. You start walking until a bright red billboard catches your eye – a text in bold, flashing colours ‘CALL NOW, AND NEVER HAVE ANY FINANCIAL TROUBLES AGAIN’ with a phone number above it.

You decide to ignore the fact that it was pretty sketchy, its not like you have anything to loose. Maybe it was reverse psychology – 99% of people think it's a scam, so the 1% who actually take the leap of faith strike gold and become billionaires.

You've already dialed the number, so you have no chance to compute what you've done. No time for the usual social anxiety that creeps into your heart to take hold and whisper that the person on the other line thinks you're a weirdo for calling, even though that's what phone numbers are for.

“THANK YOU FOR CALLING S.KTCHY LTD!” An automated woman's voice cheers, “WE PRIDE OURSELVES AT FAST SERVICE, PLEASE WAIT FOR A MEMBER OF OUR HARD WORKING TEAM TO GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU!”

You're met with cheesy jazz waiting music and you continue on the road. You catch a glimpse of someone on a bike in front of you and move to the side of the pavement so they have more room.

What you don't think would happen, would be for them to make a complete beeline for you – namely your phone. You clutch your phone with a strength you didn't think you have, making eye contact through a black balaclava. You might have laughed at how the assailant looked like those cartoon robbers, stripes and all – but not when they're trying to pry your last chance from your cold hands.

“GET OFF!” You scream as you put all your weight on the back of your heels. The masked thief seems to realise it's more trouble than it's worth and lets go, fleeing away on their bike as fast as they came.

You have no time to catch yourself as you bring your device to your chest. You feel gravity pull your back down and you hear a sick crunch reverberate through your head. You (not so) gracefully land on the back of your head, the pavement acting as a not so soft pillow.

Spots start to form in your vision. Was it rain or your impending doom? Maybe both.

You could still make out the stupid jazz of being held on the line through the steady ringing your ears were making. How embarrassing. Not only were you most definitely being scammed, the scammer probably heard the whole thing.

You see someone's silhouette. God? Mum? A random passerby who saw you tumble? You hope none of the above. You feel bitter and humiliated — the last things you feel as you fade completely.

Chapter 2: [02] I Don't Understand

warning: incredibly brief mention of suicide (no one commits/debates commiting the act for realsies)

Chapter Text

The ground is surprisingly comfortable when you come too, the scent of something medicinal catches your senses off guard.

No smell of bleach, no sound of beeping – and it didn't feel like you were on a mattress.

Your eyes open slowly and you're met with a wooden ceiling and a… crow?

“CAW!”

You're confused. You know you hit your head, but you didn't expect a crow to be the thing you're mind would make up.

They're awake! CAW!”

Woah, that crow has good speech!

You'd heard about how they could mimic people, however, the crow you were hallucinating seemed almost fluent in the way it makes its statement.

Your ears pick up footsteps approaching and as you try and sit up, you're immediately pushed back down. You soon realise a bandage is wrapped around your head tightly.

Good morning! You have quite a nasty wound, it's better to rest for now! Do you remember what happened?”

Large, owl-like eyes take over your vision. A brilliant orange and yellow – with an impressive pair of eyebrows. That, and unusually coloured hair that took on the appearance of fire.

You squint, he said something but you're not sure what it meant. Something in the back of your mind nags at you – he seems familiar.

Hello? Can you hear me? I can get a doctor for you if you feel unwell!

Your eyes wander to his hip, a scabbard of sorts resting on a white belt. He wears a family uniform.

He looks oddly like a demon slayer from that one anime I totally didn't cry about back in 2020…

Maybe you were in some state of delirium, the man beside you continues to beam with his arms crossed – waiting for an answer.

“Sorry, I think I've lost my mind.”

His smile drops for a moment, before returning. He seems a little more worried now.

Quite a predicament, I have no idea what you just said!

You let your hand wander to your forehead, a constant pounding seemed to tell you of your reality. You were feeling pain – the man beside you was real, and speaking a different language.

“Can you do me a favour and punch me really hard?”

Sorry, I cannot understand you!

You hum. You nearly pat yourself on the back with how calm you are. You'd always mused with yourself on what you would do if something like this happened. Your usual response would always jump to an extreme, that you'd probably kill yourself because you didn't like change or unfamiliarity – but it was a kind of joke, plus, it’s not like it would actually happen.

But now, as you stare at the eerily recognisable man stood towering over you, you know there isn't really anything you can do about your situation. There was no magic involved as far you were aware, and maybe this was a very elaborate dream – or maybe this was real life, and being in denial would cause more harm than good.

Are you okay? Do you feel pain anywhere?” The man tries his luck again, as if you'd magically understand him. You can't help but return a blank stare.

“Are you a demon slayer by any chance?” You ask, he raises a fluffy eyebrow and you tut to yourself at the hypocrisy – of course he wouldn't understand you either, stupid.

You inhale, summoning the very limited Japanese knowledge you had gained over the few years of watching anime – mentally thanking yourself for choosing subtitles over dubbed versions.

“Uhh… demon? Blade of Demon Destruction*?”

He basically jumps up, eyes wider, along with a brighter smile. Whatever the last bit meant seemed to get something across to him. Surely a manga's title will have some relevance to what the characters do anyway? how far could it be from actually saying something close to ‘demon slayer’?

So you do know Japanese! I was getting worried we would be unable to communicate! You have an unusual way with words, though!” His smile is bright, and his shoulders relax. Too bad you have no idea what he just said to you.

“Sorry, I don't understand you.” You shake your head and you watch as his smile turns awkward and silence envelopes the room.

This would be a long day.

Notes:

*Blade of Demon Destruction is the direct translation of Kimetsu no Yaiba (according to a redditor whom I trust more than google translate)!

> I feel if someone were in a situation like MC is in right now, the best course of action would be to just throw every word you know at whoever and hope it would get somewhere. better than nothing right? Plus, it would likely get across saying “demon slayer”, without actually having to know how to say demon slayer, you know?

I was debating on actually having MC say “Kimetsu no Yaiba” but that would mean there would be a mix of Japanese and English, and just for consistency sake, I will be sticking to purely English :)

SECRET ALERT!

> Rengoku thought [Name] was dead initially, but upon realising they were alive, patched them up himself – what a gentleman!

Chapter 3: [03] Butterfly Estate

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

He had said something, but you obviously had no idea what it meant once again, so you were all but clueless when he slung you onto his back with ease and started to run so fast you worried you would fly off.

He was kind enough to give you his cool cloak, you felt like some sort of sorry super hero, not a doubt in your mind that the bandage wrapped around your forehead just added to the illusion.

As you both travelled on the dirt road, you reflected on your clumsy introductions to each other.

some time earlier…

My name is Rengoku Kyojuro! What is yours, young odd one?

Rengoku Kyojuro

You knew that name, you knew this man. It felt quite weird, you had seen his life flash before his eyes, watched him take his last breaths – albeit in cartoon form. However, you recalled vividly ugly sobbing at your screen, as you watched the movie on a very legal website.

He was kind despite having a hard life, a dedicated older brother, an understanding son – a great human being through and through. He was alive in front of you, healthy and smiling like he always did when he was on screen, but all you could picture was the blood that pooled from his stomach after getting on that damned train, in return, saving 300 souls from a similarly grim fate.

“I'm gonna assume you introduced yourself. I am [Y/N] [L/N] [Y/N]. Call me [Y/N] only though,” you point at yourself, “[Y/N],” you then point at the man, “Rengoku”

“[Y/N]!" he parroted, a slight accent evident, "Yup, you are quite a weird one! Never heard such a name before!” you can almost imagine the sparkles coming off the fiery man as he crosses his arms proudly at the fact he was able to communicate something.

too the present day…

It had been about an hour, and now you stood outside a large mansion. Its bustling atmosphere is easy to notice, people coming in and out – all uniformed.

You recall back to the series, they were called ‘Kakushi’, easily identifiable by the mask piece they wore. There were quite a few people in the iconic demon slayer uniforms as well.

However, a majority wore a mint green jumpsuit – some looking more sickly than others, some even requiring assistance to get around.

Despite that, the plentiful amount of flowers and wildlife seemed to chase away the sadness.

This is the butterfly estate! We need to get your head checked out immediately, and then the master would like to speak to you!” Kyojuro states as he slowly lowers you to the ground. He lightly waves in a ‘follow me’ motion and you nod.

When you enter, it's even more hectic. People pushing trolleys with medicine and food around, whilst others fumbled with fresh laundry.

Rengoku-sama! Do you need help? i’ll get Kocho– who's that?” A girl with jet black hair pulled into two pigtails tilts her head, her piercing blue eyes basically stare into your soul. It sounds like she asked a question.

This is [Y/N]! They seemed to have hurt their head and need medical assistance immediately! Please can you get Kocho-san when they are cleared?” he started, “I would do it myself, however I was in the middle of a mission and was unable to finish it!

The girl seems to stare in shock for a moment for giving a firm nod. Kyojuro says something else, and you recognise the words ‘Thank You’ before he turns to you again. You can't help but raise your eyebrow in confusion when you feel his hand pat your shoulder.

Get well soon! Goodbye!

And before you can register the ‘goodbye, he practically disappears in front of your eyes. How was it possible for someone to be so fast? You have no time to ask questions before you're ushered into a shared ward, two people are sat in their beds talking to each other, before they are interrupted by the black haired girl entering.

You break eye contact with them as soon as you catch them. You don't recognise them, one of them has a bandage over their left eye, the other has their right leg supported by a sling and a bandage around their neck. You feel out of place.

As the lady pats the hospital bed, you mull over Japanese phrases you know and remember.

I need to check your head.” she points at the bandages on your head.

You have no idea what she said, but her actions get her intent across and you nod as you sit on the side of the bed – the silence is defeaning.

Why the hell are the other slayers staring at you like some kind of zoo animal? Do you look insane or something?

You close your eyes slightly as the girl starts to unravel the bandage, you catch the sight of red staining the material. You internally grimace – you took quite the nasty fall it seemed.

However, you couldn't push down the incoming heat of embarrassment. How were you ever going to explain that, in a world where literal human heroes push themselves to the brink of death to save others, you slip and fall on the pavement after nearly getting your phone stolen, whilst simultaneously getting scammed?

Are you okay? You feel a little feverish…” The woman, who has finished unwrapping your head and had moved onto feeling around for what you assume is to make sure there were no fractures or breaks, paused to look at you.

You knew this girl too, Aoi Kanazaki – though not on the front line, she was equally as important to the Corps’ cause. She was talented in the art of healing people, and was evidently a resident of the butterfly estate (as you recall it being called) as seen by the two blue butterfly clips on her head.

She looked concerned, and you recognised ‘Are you okay?’ from what she said.

Fine.” You replied.

It wasn't exactly a lie, despite her unconvinced expression. The pounding headache had basically subsided – though your head was a bit tender to the touch, you did feel just fine.

She nodded.

Well, it looks like you fell on some rocks or something, that would explain the bleeding – the cut is only superficial and won't need any stitches. I'll get you some painkillers before I go and get Kocho-sama, okay?

You look on blankly. Not only did she say a lot of words, she said them very fast too. You heard ‘Kocho’, and that's it.

Hello? Did you get that?” she waves her hand in front of your face, seemingly to awkward you from daydreaming, however in reality, you were trying to translate what she had said.

“I'm really sorry, but I don't know what you just said.”

Here we go again.

Notes:

SECRET ALERT!

> Rengoku introduces MC as '[Y/N]' despite the custom of using last names for those you're unfamiliar with. This is because he has no idea [L/N] is MC's last name, due to the fact they insist on only being called [Y/N], thus only using '[Y/N]' when gesturing to themselves.

He thinks it kind of wierd how short your name is, but he doesn't judge!

Chapter 4: [04] Good Luck

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Unsurprisingly, you're met with more awkward silence as the butterfly girl blinks a few times. It seemed she was unaware of your predicament and the whole ‘not understanding each other’ thing.

Nevertheless, she makes a, what you assume to be, ‘stay’ motion before she disappears into the winding hallways of the ward.

The two nosy demons had at some point finally started to talk to each other, chasing away the deathly silence of the room. They could be insulting you and your entire bloodline for all you knew, however, it was better than staring at each other like deers in headlights.

Not long after, Aoi walks back in with a steaming cup in her hand, and she hands it to you, she makes a drinking motion. You nod and take a sip.

Your tastebuds are immediately attacked by bitter herbs and heat, and you physically recoil at the taste. You can only imagine the look you give Aoi – probably one that looked like she'd murdered someone and you'd walked in on it.

She shakes her head as her eyebrows knit together.

You gotta drink it fast, otherwise you'll gag on it!” she says, you watch as her hands imitate holding a cup, then she makes a motion that can only be described as taking a shot, “Fast! Drink fast!”

Fast…” You echo. It'll be best to cram as much Japanese as you could into your vocabulary to make life easier.

Yes, fast!” She half-cheered.

“I'm gonna pretend I know what fast means.”

You inhale through your nose before tilting your head completely back and swallowing the cup of questionable liquid whole. Aoi takes your cup as you wipe your mouth, hoping to wipe away any residue that may have escaped.

Kocho-sama said she'll be here as soon as possible, okay? She'll take you to the master – you don't need any more medical attention,” Aoi starts, “I know you don't know what im saying, but we've got to free up some beds, so can you wait in the garden, please?

You tilt your head as you mull over what she said. ‘Kocho-sama’ is all your gathered.

You’re given no time to think any further before you're pushed out of the ward and into an outside area, it smelt of flowers, and you could hear running water coming from a water feature in the corner.

Garden. Stay. Kocho-sama comes for you.

You raise an eyebrow. You notice how Aoi has shortened her sentences, maybe to accommodate for your lack of knowledge. However, despite the simplification, you're still confused.

Aoi makes another ‘stay’ motion, before using two fingers to simulate walking and pointing at you.

Stay!” she repeats.

You nod hesitantly and she returns it before turning on her heel and sauntering off. You wonder how busy the butterfly mansion is, how many injuries does the building see a day?

Trying to rid your brain of potentially dark thoughts, you decide to sit on the wooden patio to watch the dancing butterflies. You assume Aoi wanted you to stay, and something about ‘Kocho-sama’ – she was talking about Shinobu, no doubt.

Hello!

Speak of the devil.

A familiar sing-song voice catches your attention and you immediately stand up – turning around quickly.

You're met with the hauntingly beautiful insect pillar – you decide the anime and manga did no justice to how empty her eyes looked. It was quite unsettling how her smile didn't meet her eyes.

You’re the foreigner I assume?” she puts a finger to her chin and you tilt your head in confusion. What did she just say? You recognised none of those words.

I'll take that as a yes! Come now, follow me!”, she waved her hands in a ‘come hither’ motion, “follow! follow!

You trail behind her, impressed by how despite her short stature, she makes quick ground. You also surprise yourself as she leads you down more and more hallways, outside areas and eventually another mansion.

You'd be kidding yourself if you didn't say Shinobu wasn't one of your favourite characters, and she was literally walking right in front of you!

The master would like to speak to you,” she abruptly turns and you nearly headbutt her by accident, if she noticed, she makes no comment or acknowledgement.

You notice behind her are two small children, each with the same haircut. They look like living dolls, and kind of creep you out,

I have no doubt there is a good reason, and you'll be able to communicate with someone properly,” she steps aside as the children say something and the sliding door opens. The room inside is dimly lit, probably by a few candles.

Good luck!” she taps your shoulder, before walking away.

The master will see you now.” You turn away from watching the retreating pillars figure. She had said a lot, and once again, you had no idea what she said. That, and the two children who had eerily said something in perfect sync looked at you with expectation – hands pointed into the doorway.

You nod, and enter the dark room.

The room smells of burnt incense and brewed tea, of which a tray sits in the centre of the room.

You try to push down the increased nervousness, trying to convince your heart that you were not being attacked by a bear (as far as you knew), but were in for a conversation of sorts and that it didn't need to be beating so fast.

As you step further, you make out the lit figures of two people. A man and a woman.

You feel awkward, which is made even worse when the lady gets up and approaches what appears to be another sliding door. You're proven correct as she slides the door open, however streams of sunlight pour into the room – a gentle gust of wind blows the candles out. The door leads out into a garden of sorts.

The lady then returned to sitting next to the man, who was seemingly happily sipping a cup of tea. They exchanged a few words before she left, the two children following in suit behind her.

Gosh, you probably looked like an idiot loitering around, but wouldn't it be a little rude to just make yourself at home and sit down?

Your thoughts are interrupted when the man – a purple scar covering the top half of his face looks right at you.

“You're here. Why not take a seat, I'd like to speak to you.”

Notes:

SECRET ALERT!

> Aoi has become a master at both coaxing and forcing people to drink medicine, no matter how gross it may be. In fact, she's gotten so good at it, that whenever someone refuses to do so, the doctors and other butterfly girls summon her specifically!

Chapter 5: [05] A Long Story

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

That's weird, it sounded like he spoke perfect English–

“Well? Would you like some tea to calm your nerves? You seem quite apprehensive.” The man exhales a breathy chuckle as he pours a liquid into a ceramic cup. You would question how he was doing that, but not only would that be rude, more importantly how does he know English? Was that a detail you'd forgotten?

“I'm sorry… but you…” you trial off.

“Speak English? Yes, I was very fortunate in my upbringing. Education was of utmost importance. Kaname* informed me of your unusual predicament whilst you travelled here.” He started, and you started to draw closer, before kneeling in front of the man, “My name is Ubuyashiki Kagaya, your name is [Y/N] [L/N], correct?”

“Yes, it is.”

“Perfect,” he mused before picking up his tea cup again, “May I ask why you’re here? Being alone in a country you're both unfamiliar with, as well as not knowing the language is hard to understand.”

You stare at the master for a moment. Should you reveal the real reason, or should you make up something?

“It's kind of a long story,” You confess.

“Well, I do have all day to hear you out,” he states, his expression unchanging.

That was not the response you were hoping for.

“I was taking a hike and fell on a rock!” you started and you caught his head tilt in question.

“Is that so? And how do you know about demon slayers? Kaname* also informed me of how you said something to Rengoku when you woke up. ‘Blade of Demon Destruction’, was it? Quite a fascinating phrase to know, especially when you struggle to hold basic conversation.”

You're caught off guard, speechless even. He really thought this through.

“Might I add, I am the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps. It's only natural I make sure the Corps is under no threat with your presence being here.”

“What? It's nothing like that! I've just heard… stories, you know?” you reason.

“Stories?” Kagaya asks.

“I found a book and it… spoke of people with swords that killed man-eating creatures called demons! I assumed it was fake, but I've been proven wrong!”

“You’re lying,” his smile doesn't drop, the serene expression never falling as he places the empty cup onto a saucer, “Aren't you?”

A beat of silence, you gawk at the man in front you. He's calm, and looks sickly – like a breeze could knock him over. However, he excluded a sort of aura that demanded attention and respect. You'd seen in the manga, how terrifying this man could get – but being on the other side of it was a whole different experience.

“Uh… no?”

He lets out another chuckle, obviously unconvinced.

“I have a gift, [Y/N]. The blessing of foresight, quite useful, no?” He starts and you clench your hands, knuckles turning white. It's hard to not be nervous, what if he saw you as a threat and executed you right here?

“Whilst I don't see you as a threat, you're quite the anomaly. The fact you feel so compelled to lie also tells me there's more to what you're letting on. You’re not just a regular foreigner that happened to get lost, are you?”

You exhale. It was clear that no matter how many lies you'd spew at this guy, he'd see through all of them, and carry on prying at the truth. He was committed to his cause, to the extent he sent people to certain death – if he thought you were of some use, or worse, some threat to his plans, he would make sure to find out.

“No, i’m not.”

He hums, urging you to continue.

“This might sound crazy, but would you believe me if I said you weren't real where I'm from?”

It seems to catch his attention, his cloudy eyes meet yours.

“Not real? Please, elaborate.”

“As in, you, demons, the demon slayer corps – it's all fictional. You're all from a story – a book if you will”

The master's head lowers, eyes cast to the ground, “That is quite unusual. So, where are you from, may I ask?”

“The year 2025, in an entirely different universe.”

The man's calm expression seems to finally drop. A look of shock evident on his face.

“The year… 2025?” he repeats, seemingly unconvinced.

“I know it sounds far fetched, but I'm not crazy, I swear!” You say, you can only imagine how it would seem from his point of view. Not to mention the fact that saying ‘im not crazy’ makes you look crazier.

The man is silent for a moment, refilling his cup again, the steam travelling towards the ceiling.

“I don't suppose you have evidence? Whilst I don't necessarily think you're lying, it's not exactly easy to believe.” he once again holds the cup to his lips, blowing on it slightly.

You think for a moment. You'd lost your phone (much to your chagrin back when you were with Rengoku. After all that, you still lose it?), so you couldn't use that. Your bag didn't seem to make it either – nothing in your pockets would be ground breaking. Then you remember the one thing that you've had the entire time, no physical item required.

“That lady who was with you before I came in, that was your wife, wasn't it? Her name is Amane, right?”

He pauses, you shouldn't know that, there were members in the corps who didn't even know that, you continue.

“You mentioned your blessing, but you haven't mentioned your curse. You're destined to die before you turn thirty, because you're from the same bloodline as Muzan Kibutsuji, the demon king. A consequence of his creation.”

It's quiet. Even the birds outside seem to have hushed at your borderline outburst.

“My, now that is quite compelling,” he seems troubled, eyebrows knitted, an almost sad smile.

“Not many people know this information,” he starts, “you say the place we're in is fictional from where you're from, a book, yes?”

You nod.

“Considering you seem to have quite an in depth knowledge of myself, is it safe to assume you have… read this book?”

Again, you nod.

“This book… is it complete?”

“If you're asking whether I know how this all ends… the answer is yes.”

The master presses his lips together, his shoulders seem to relax. Again, he chuckles.

“My, not even I foresaw this,” he mused, “[Y/N], if I were to ask for your assistance, would you agree? I'll guarantee protection and to have all your needs met in return.”

Notes:

*Kaname is Rengoku's crow's name!

SECRET ALERT!

> Kagaya found it amusing when Kaname came to him to basically snitch on a foreigner for having a suspicious amount of knowledge on the demon slayer corps. Kaname suggested MC was a rogue demon at first, then a spy enlisted by an upper demon (or worse, muzan himself), but later came to the conclusion that they were just odd when he found MC's injury was due to falling on a rock head first.

> Kagaya felt quite intimidated at the prospect of someone knowing as much as MC does – especially without his consent. He values having control of any situation, especially concerning himself, his family, and the Corps, and for once, he had absolutely zero – he hadn't felt that worried (scared) in a long time!

Chapter 6: [06] I Want To Be A Demon Slayer

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The offer is tempting. Protection AND everything you ever need? For something as little as reciting a story? It wasn't half bad…

However, something gnawed on your heart. Perhaps your guilty conscience – sinking it's claws into your very soul – whispering into your ears. You have a chance, why not take it? For all you knew, you were as good as dead in your world – what if you could never get back?

“Mr Ubuyashiki, can I ask you a question?”

He nods.

“If I were to ask you whether I could join your cause, would you agree?”

You watch the man's lips pursed slightly, “As in…?”

“I want to become a demon slayer.”

He laughs. Not a chuckle, a full blown laugh.

You can feel heat rush to your cheeks in embarrassment. Was it really that funny? Who the hell has the audacity to laugh in someone's face, especially when they're obviously being serious?

“Mr Ubuyashiki…?”

The laughter dies down, “Forgive me, it's just, I didn't expect you to be so reckless”

You're confused, eyebrow quirked in question, “Excuse me?”

“You have valuable information. Should word get out, not only would you attract attention from other slayers, it may even reach Muzan himself. You realise you'd become a prime target, yes?”

“I do, do you think I'm stupid or something?"

Perhaps you were wrong to get defensive, after all, it seemed Kagaya's intention was in your best interest. Not only did you know the fate of the demon slayer corps, you knew what Muzan wanted, and where it was (or at least an idea). If the rumours were to spread, you'd quite literally be running around with a bright red target on your head.

However, what about the opportunity you had? You knew who died — who lived. How it happened, and therefore how to prevent it. You would never forgive yourself if you simply turned a blind eye and did nothing–

“I refuse.”

A gasp escapes. One of both surprise and disbelief at the man in front of you.

“What?”

“You will not join the demon slayer corps, for your own safety.”

You clench your hands into fists so tightly you worry you'd break your fingers, who did this guy think he was? And who did he think he was kidding?

“‘My own safety’ you say?” you glower, “I might not know you properly as a person, but you're aware of how I know your history. You send people out on borderline impossible missions to be killed to further your cause.”

You catch the slight frown appear on his face, but you continue.

“Is it really for my safety, or is it because I'm useless to you and your cause dead? Or, better yet, would you care if I were to tell you everything I knew now, only to be attacked by a demon and killed when I so much as step outside? Demons don't give a damn if you ‘promise protection’ if they find the right time to pounce, I'm sure you know that, right?”

You inhale at the long rant. Maybe it was a little overboard, and he did care, even a little. However, this man was not a stranger to making sacrifices, and you knew that.

“If you do not allow me to train as a demon slayer, I will not tell you anything, and I will leave.”

Where would you go if he refused? You had no idea where the hell you were, and you had no money.

“I commend your boldness. You're quite the character, aren't you?” The man muses to himself, his milky eyes closed in a sort of acceptance.

“Say, If I were to agree to allow you to train as a demon slayer, would you reveal everything right now?” He asks.

“No.” You answer. You had to be smart about this – play your cards right.

“Oh?”

“If you agree, I'll reveal a part of what I know – and continue to do so as events draw closer. If I don't do that, how can I make sure you don't kick me out as soon as you know everything?”

He huffs – you catch undertones of amusement, and maybe frustration. Nonetheless, the man relents, “Alright, you have a deal. You will train under one of the hashira – you will also receive Japanese lessons for communication's sake.”

“Wait, really?” You were taken aback, you expected him to put up more of a fight.

“Don't tell me you thought I would say no to such an opportunity? I thought you knew my intentions?”

You feel another wave of embarrassment, you had said something along those lines, hadn't you.

“Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude.” You bite your nail quietly, a habit you'd developed a while ago when you were nervous.

“I take no offence,” he shakes his head, “A strong resolve is a valuable asset in this line of work. However…” he trails off before he makes direct eye contact, “You are forbidden from quitting the training regime.”

“Excuse me?”

“Training under hashira is known to be challenging for both the body and soul – it's the reason why many don't have tsuguko – I'm sure you know what they are, yes?”

“A successor. Tsuyuri Kanao is the tsuguko of the insect pillar Kocho Shinobu,” you state, if the man before you was still having doubts of you having knowledge of the corps despite being both foreign and clueless, they were most probably dispelled now. He hums in satisfaction.

“Training under a hashira will give you the best chances of survival in battle, you will not be provided protection on missions assuming you succeed in becoming a demon slayer – we need you to be the strongest you can so you, forgive me for being blunt but, don't die a pointless death.”

You nod a long in understanding. Training under a hashira, what an honour, really. You wonder if it will be a past pillar, or a current one. However, you're fairly certain the active pillars are incredibly busy, and have more to worry about than taking on some random foreigner who practically demanded their boss to be let in. Not to mention your less than stellar fitness level. You'd spent your days hunched over a desk for the better part of your life for goodness sake! You couldn't even walk more than two staircases without having to hide how heavy you were breathing out of embarrassment.

“I will personally deliver Japanese lessons when you are not training.”

“Wait, what? You'd do that?”

“I am one of the very few people who understand English in the Corps. We don't need you to be fluent as much as that would be desirable – however knowing the basics, especially in situations where team work will be needed, will be of utmost importance,” he starts, “It will be a good opportunity to get to know one another as well, as i have many questions for you,” He smiles at you. It feels unusual, a character that was once so mysterious (and kind of off putting for some reason) was basically saying you needed bonding time.

“You have your reasons to join yourself, I'm sure, especially considering you likely know the dangers,” he flashes a knowing look, “Your training will be rigorous, however I trust you will become a fine demon slayer and one of our greatest assets, I do have just one condition for you.”

“What is it?” you probe.

“I ask you to not disclose your knowledge to anyone but myself. My wife and children will also be made aware for convenience,” his expression turns serious, "Though I don't know of the outcome of this journey, I'm not naive enough to expect there will be no great losses, such that keeping it a secret will be the best course for morale.”

You nod, and hum in response. It's understandable, if you were to put yourself in the shoes of any of the demon slayers, main character or not, you'd likely question everything if you knew what lay ahead, especially when it nears its end.

“Well then, it is settled," the sound of a sliding door catches your attention and you look behind you. The two children stand with those unsettling, empty smiles.

“I will send a pillar for you tomorrow, you will start your training promptly,” he explains, “I will allow a few days to get into routine and settle, after that, I will arrange a lesson with you, and we can have a discussion of the future. Do you accept?”

“Yes! Uh, thank you, Mr Ubuyashiki!” you do an awkward bow, and you think you hear your spine crack. That's what happens when you neglect your posture, and you thank the gods that this man is likely mostly blind and can't see how ridiculous you look.

“Perfect.” He points to the two small kids, who have now travelled to stand silently behind you, “My children will guide you to where you will be staying. I look forward to seeing your progress, [Y/N].”

Chapter Text

You'd been escorted by the two children to yet another mansion (just how many mansions were there!?), and as they slid the door open and gestured for you to walk inside, they said in sync, “We will arrange kakushi to arrive as soon as possible, please make yourself comfortable in the mean time.”

You didn't even have time to try and translate what they said, before they walked away in their eerie silence.

Kakushi’, huh? Maybe you needed help with something you didn't know about yet? You couldn't really figure out why kakushi would be needed, but stood (awkwardly) in the first room as you waited regardless.

Not long after the twins' departure, a faint knock on the wooden frame of the door could be heard before a rather feeble voice said something you couldn't understand.

The door revealed a figure, small in stature, made even smaller by the hunch of their shoulders. In their hand, a cane of some sort. Only when you catch the sight of an aged hand, and grey hair as they remove the head piece, do you realise the kakushi before you was indeed an old woman.

Not old as in their sixties, old as in more so eighties, maybe pushing their nineties.

“Hello there, dear,” she says, and in the midst of your confusion, you make out ‘hello’.

“Oh, uh… hello?” you reply, MORE awkward silence. You wonder whether if you took a shot every time awkward silence took place since you've been here, would you of died of alcohol poisoning by now?

Ah! My apologies, the master has informed me of your inability of speaking Japanese, goodness… I sure am old now, my brain is basically mush!” she starts giggling to herself as she steps further in the room after closing the door.

“You’re in luck dear, I have quite the talent at English!”

And suddenly she's speaking perfect english, what the hell was happening?

“Huh?”

She tuts at you in confusion, pointing her cane at your chest, “HUH?,” She parrots, “Kids these days, is that how you greet your elders? Sit down! Sit down!”

She shoos you into what you assume to be the equivalent of a living room. It's furnished quite lavishly, fresh flowers in vases, clean surfaces – it was lived in, but well maintained.

You kneel on the soft floor in front of a table, the odd woman sits on the other end – her palms firmly planted on the wood as she stares through your soul.

“Listen here, kid! The master asked me personally to board you, and I ain't taking that lightly! You better be clean and respectful of this sacred ground, got it?” she squawks, the visage of a sweet old grandma melts away, and you almost see yourself deadpan at the realisation.

“I'll keep that in mind but… who are you?” you ask, and she looks at you like you've murdered her family.

“Me!? Has the master seriously not told you!? I am the one and only Nagasawa Chiyo! You are in my home and–!”

“Yeah yeah, you've said that already. Why am I here of all places though?”

“You got a problem with my house!?” she glowers, and you almost feel scared – but what could this frail old woman do anyway?

“Not really, it's a lovely home, “ you start, and you see her shoulders relaxed, “but with all due respect Miss Nagasawa, I think I told was told I'd be met with a kakushi, and well, you're a little frail to be doing all that work, don't you think?”

“FRAIL!? WHY YOU LITTLE–” You think she's going to launch herself across the table, before she abruptly pulls back and sits back down with a calm expression.

talk about mood swings, geez.

she coughs into her aged hand to recollect herself, “I am Nagasawa Chiyo, I am a kakushi, yes. However, back in my prime I was a hashira myself!” she puts her hands to her cheeks as if she's gushing over a teenage crush, “Ah, the good old days, I was quite the beauty, you know?”

“You… were a pillar? You?”

“DON'T SOUND SO SURPRISED YOU– ahem!,” she coughs again, “I was the water pillar nearly sixty years ago now! One of the best! I even trained the former pillar myself, as well as took part in raising the master!” she puffs her chest out in a display of pride, hands on her hips, before she recoils muttering ‘my back!’

“A pillar… are you going to train me? You use a cane to walk though…”

You catch the smirk creeping on her lips and she raises the cane above her head, “You mean this baby? This ain't no cane, kid!” She unsheathes the wooden case and reveals a pristine sword – blue swirls decorate the blade like a winding river, a tassel sits at the end.

“My very own katana, it's held up like a charm and looks as beautiful as the day I got it! Truly a marvellous creation, my husband made this y'know? It ain't like I'd marry a guy who couldn't even make a half decent sword though!” she stops herself before she can rant further about what you assume, her taste in men and how they had to be good at making swords for some reason.

“So you're gonna train me?” you stare at the older woman, she shakes her head.

“With these old bones? Not a chance! I ain’t got a clue who the master gave the nightmare– I mean the pleasure of training ya, but it certainly ain't me!”

You nod along, but you still can't shake the slight confusion.

“But… why am I in your house, though?”

She sighs, “you sure have a lotta questions, don't ya?” she relents however, “Amane came to see me during the meeting you had with the master, talked about how he foresaw something about ya staying , and he's basically my boss, so I can't really say no!”

“So you've been forced to house me, then?” she nods slightly.

“I guess… but this old house ain't had souls livin’ in it properly since my retirement, so I guess the best I could do is hand it over to someone who needs it.”

“Hand it… over? As in…?”

“This old mansion is your problem now, not mine! I made plenty of money back in my day, and have a great home of my own to get back to – ‘specially without the black mould and probably haunted closet!”

“You're giving me your house?” You tilt your head in confusion, who the hell just hands out their house to strangers.

“Master sent a crow to tell me all about ya situation, you some witch or something?” she asks, but gives no time for you to answer, “It doesn't matter, point is, I don't need this estate, you do, simple!”

Yeah, this woman was out of her mind.

Notes:

The story will start picking up from here! Sorry for the pretty boring bits – they are pretty necessary though!

SECRET ALERT

> Chiyo held a competition back when she was pillar between the swordsmiths , stating whoever made the most resilient sword would be able to marry her! The competition included multiple tests on the swords such as throwing them off of cliffs, setting them on fire and crushing them between boulders – that's how she met her husband!

> Chiyo really was beautiful, rich and talanted back in her prime, making her a desirable bride – however she avoided marriage until she had established herself and made enough money to live comfortably alone, only then did she even entertain the idea of marrying someone!

Chapter Text

The rest of the day goes by quickly.

Mrs Nagasawa, or Chiyo as she insisted on you calling her, stating it made her ‘feel young’ again, explained how even though she had basically handed you her former home like it was no big deal, she had been given then duty by the master himself to act as some sort of servant.

She'd also told you how she was often reserved for more ‘domestic’ roles now, such as delivering medicine to the ill, or brewing tea. She was an agile and obviously strong willed old lady, however she was elderly at the end of the day, and her body didn't work the way it used to – therefore going out onto the front lines was not possible anymore.

You considered the possibility that Kagaya may give her such orders out of love for the woman. She herself said she had some part of raising him when he was young after his parents passed away after he became the master at a young age – so you wondered if he was reluctant to send a maternal figure out into danger.

She however cursed him at you, at how he had ordered her to retire – she sharing how she had outwardly refused and disappeared into the mountains to prove she was ‘still kicking’.

It felt weird to have someone do everything for you. And by everything, you meant EVERYTHING – Chiyo, though not exactly thrilled about her less action packed duties, was determined to do her work properly.

“Drink this tea, kid, it helps with sleep!”

“Eat up! I made enough for five people”... “A lot of food? Well, ya gonna have to grow some muscles if ya gonna be a demon slayer, and muscles can't grow from nowhere!”

“Let's do some stretches before you go to bed so you feel refreshed in the morning!”

After everything, she left the house – she shared that she lived in a more quaint cottage like house in the woods. You had initially felt worried that this small (ancient) woman would get snatched away by a starving demon, but she responded by smacking you over the head with her sword handle before stating the path and home was surrounded by wisteria trees – and that the two hour walk there and back kept her knees twenty years younger.

Where did she get her energy? You weren't sure, however you had already formed some sort of deep respect for the lady despite her nagging and over the top attitude. She was a pillar after all, obviously experienced more than most people in your time ever will, and still refused to stop working.

You'd asked about her husband, but she gave you a look that made you stop treading the line of personal and casual conversation, followed by an apology she stated was not needed.

And then, the next day came, and as the sun started to rise you could hear the squawks of a crow, followed by Chiyo.

“Get up kid! The hashira will be here soon, ya gotta eat something so ya don't drop dead or worse, embarrass yourself!”

you groaned as you felt her boney fingers wrap around your shoulder and shake you. You were tempted to ask for an extra five minutes (or three hours), however, Chiyo basically dragged you by the feet to the table.

An assortment of dishes – nothing you'd usually eat in your country or time for breakfast. Rice was certainly a staple, however it was tasty and filling nonetheless, and paired well with the floral tea Chiyo had boiled.

“It's wisteria! I had a friend back in the day, she used to tell me how drinking wisteria tea wards off demons! So ya better drink up unless ya want your face ripped off!”

You didn't believe her superstitions – did the wisteria even remain in your body after you drank it? maybe it made you less tasty to demons – however if you were already dead, did it matter whether they decided to munch on your insides or not?

As you finished off the beverage, two crows landed outside of the patio. Chiyo had insisted sunlight and fresh air was important at the start of the day before opening the doors leading to the gardens.

One of them was noticeably frailer, feather messier. The other looked like… well a crow.

CAW! Hashira will be here shortly!

caw! demon this way! caw!

CAW! Wrong message Kanzaburo*! CAW!

You hear Chiyo chuckle from behind you as she clears away the dishes and cups.

“What did they say Chiyo?” You ask over your shoulder as you eye the two birds as they continue to communicate with each other.

“The hashira will be arriving soon, better wait for them outside.”

She opens the front door and you follow, looking down the dirt path. The two crows had also followed, however, the more youthful crow flew away, disappearing into the distance. The older crow sat perched on the overhanging roof.

As you wait, you let it dawn on you. The situation really was insane – a second day in a fictional universe. You were wearing a fictional uniform, the kanji that spelled ‘destroy’ splayed on your back. You could feel the thick padding around your torso – however the pants were light and airy.

Chiyo had told you it would be better to get used to the uniform sooner rather than later – especially with the movement you'll be doing now and later down the road. You agreed and put it on, you weren't sure how she got your size, or where she got the clothing from in the first place, however you already knew better than to question her.

You thanked the weather for its coolness – it was early spring and wasn't that warm yet. Speaking of seasons, how far along were you in the story? You obviously hadn't missed any of the major parts death wise, however, you could be years before the main trio were even active in the storyline–

CAW! The Hashira have arrived, CAW!

“They're here.” Chiyo translates, and you both look on, and sure enough, two figures could be seen running along the path with impressive speed. They were pillars for sure, no human in your time could run that fast (as far as you knew).

“Remember what Master said, keep the whole knowing everyone and their life story to yourself, alright?” Chiyo reminds you quickly, you nod slightly as you watch them approach – closer and closer.

Chiyo had mentioned that Kagaya had informed her in greater detail last night about your predicament – including the whole knowing the future and in some cases the past. You had however told her that you knew nothing about her, of which she cursed the ‘stupid book’ you had read and that it ‘missed out on the most interesting person in the Corps' history.

It was however hard to contain your familiarity as the figures became clearer. Bright, fiery hair and a white cloak that burst into flames of colourful fabric at the bottom – you could make out the smile from here. However, beside him was even more surprisingly, a head of black fluffy hair and an unmistakable mismatched haori. The poker face the man wore compared to the dazzling smile beside him as they sprinted along the path was comical, and would make for a great picture.

It was certainly a dynamic duo – one you never would've guessed in a million years. You had assumed Kagaya would send a retired hashira to train you such as Urokodaki, but nope! He decided to pull out two very active members of the corps to train you. You felt self conscious already, especially since you were taking them away from their duties.

“Chin up, kid!” Chiyo says, you feel her cane (sword) lift your chin to look straight ahead, you hadn't even realised you started to borderline sulk, “You'll be fine… probably.”

Yeah, thanks Chiyo.

The two hashira not long after stopped to stand in front of you. The two bowed at Chiyo, possible a sign of respect for her service or status – or maybe they were aware she had a nasty habit of whacking the disrespect out of people with her sword-cane.

They then turn to you and you feel your stomach do a whole gymnastics routine. Piercing orange and blue eyes bore into your soul, as you wait for them to say something.

Hello, odd one! We meet again, you look well! I am happy for you!” the fiery haired man says, you look confused, only making out ‘hello’.

Hello.” the black haired man beside him says curtly. He spoke simply, you liked it.

You can basically feel Chiyo vibrating with laughter; she doesn't even try to hide it.

“Chiyo, what did he say?”

“That doesn't matter, kid! Don't concern yourself with the details, concern yourself with training!”

And now here you were in the garden, being made to run laps like some kind of gray hound. Were you training to be a race horse or a demon slayer?? You didn't even know anymore.

Prior to this, further introductions took place as you were guided by Chiyo to the gardens. Chiyo acted as some kind of translator, though Rengoku seemed to say things she refused to translate, saying they were ‘irrelevant details’.

Speaking of the fire pillar, according to Chiyo, he had explained that he wasn't even originally ordered to train you, and that Giyuu Tomioka, the water pillar was given that duty (of which he seemed so very pleased with judging by his constant frown or uninterested expression) – however Kyojuro had decided to pay you a visit after hearing of your recovery and intention to be a demon slayer.

I have been intending to take on Tsuguko for quite a while now, and I'm sure Tomioka-san isn't opposed to it either! The master graciously allowed me to join in on Tomioka-san's training duties as well,” he explained, “It will allow for you to be trained at all times, no matter if one of us is on a mission!”

He had also said how even though having zero experience may seem like a set back, it was actually a good thing in many cases. A blank slate meant no mistakes had been made yet, and therefore future mistakes could be fixed promptly, and that becoming a demon slayer was ‘on the horizon’.

However, this training was terrible!

You were panting like a dog, basically dragging your feet along by now. How long had it been? An hour, two?

“You’re halfway kid! Only an hour more to go!”

Oh great heavens.

Notes:

*Kanzaburo, Giyuu's crow, is canonically old and makes mistakes with his messages to the extent Giyuu worries about him, which I think is hilarious and adorable and I just had to add it in lol.

SECRET ALERT!

> The whole Rengoku calling MC odd thing isn't malicious, it's just that he thinks they're quite unusual, and he finds it easy to speak his mind – which can result in misunderstandings in some situations!

> Giyuu doesn't really want a tsuguko – he agreed to train MC because they don't speak Japenese. In his head: not fluent in Japenese = less conversation. Giyuu also has connections with Chiyo personally!

Chapter 9: [09] That's An Order

Chapter Text

Yeah, you were totally done for, and certainly not made for this.

After being made to run more in two hours than you had in your entire life, you were quickly made to get down and start doing pushups.

You hated pushups. Hated how they reminded you how weak your arms were, how you couldn't hold up your own weight.

How so unprepared you were.

The pillars, though you couldn't understand them, were (un)surprisingly helpful. Especially with the addition of Chiyo who doubled as a translator and water provider.

Kyojuro gave encouragement enough to fuel you for a lifetime, whilst Giyuu, though a lot quieter, gave pointers on form and how to breathe through it.

Being on the more introverted side yourself, Rengoku came off as a bit much sometimes, making the water pillars backseated approach preferable.

And now, the day had drawn to a close – the pillars had been called out to missions of their own a while ago. The goodbye was short and sweet, Chiyo remarked that she thought you were going to die of a heart attack if they made you run any more. You didn't find it funny, because it genuinely felt plausible.

The day after, Japanese lessons started with Kagaya. You had asked if he'd rather be called ‘Master’ like everyone else in the Corps, however he insisted on a first name basis during your lessons – and that titles could be reserved in public.

So now, not only did every inch of your body hurt from physical strain, now you felt dumb as rocks.

“Why does this word have a million different meanings!?” you muttered at the paper Kagaya had set out. He made it a point that learning to read and write basic things were imperative – words like hello, goodbye, how are you?, left, right, down, up, run, help – phrases that definitely didn't scare you a little.

You assumed people who learned Japanese in your time didn't prioritise learning the word ‘help’, and that it was probably a demon slayer thing.

“It doesn't have a ‘million different meanings’, it has three, [Y/N].”

“Three is too much, why can't there just be one? And why are they all spelt differently, but sound the exact same spoken outloud!?”

“Less complaining, more learning, please.”

Who knew he'd be such a strict teacher?

He was lucky he was basically blind, otherwise he'd see the dirty looks you'd throw him every time you heard him correct you with a smug smirk he tried to hide. Though knowing him, he could probably feel the vibe of a dirty look.

Only over tea Amane had kindly bought did Kagaya start asking questions you'd been waiting to hear.

“I'd like to know some things you know of, [Y/N].”

You hummed, it was a good question. However, you didn't even know which part of the story you were in.

“The book follows a boy whose sister is turned into a demon – he becomes a demon slayer to find a cure.”

The master nods slightly, “Do you know the name of this demon slayer?”

“His name is Kamado Tanjiro.”

Kagaya looks satisfied, pleased even. He sets his cup down and looks at you with a smile.

“You certainly were telling the truth, I'm glad.”

You hum in question, prompting him to explain.

“You see, I had a letter before this year's final selection – from a former hashira, Sakonji Urokodaki.”

Your brain catches up before he even says the words.

“This Kamado Tanjiro you speak of is already a demon slayer, and is currently performing his duties with his demon sister. Though you have clarified his reasoning, thank you.”

You hesitantly nod before asking when the final selection took place.

The man thinks for a second, “A few weeks ago, three at most – it seems fate knew exactly when to drop you.” he smiles to himself.

“Is there anything else that is of importance that I need to know about?”

You think back to the events that are to transpire.

“Has he been sent into a city yet?”

“A city?” he parrots, “No.”

“Then I have nothing to share right now.”

He hums and picks up his cup to sip on it. The steam still lifts from the liquid, you wonder if he ever burns his mouth.

“What if…” you start. The words die on your tongue, but you press on.

“What if me being here messes everything up?”

The master tilts his head, you continue.

“If I try to change what happens in the future, what if it completely ruins everything and makes it worse?”

Kagaya hums, “It's a good question,” he states, “You won't know until you try though.”

You deflate. You hated being uncertain despite knowing everything. You weren't supposed to be here, which means things that weren't supposed to happen actually happening was entirely plausible.

“I do not know what you know,” he says, “However I have no doubt in my mind that you will try your best, otherwise, why would you have chosen to take up a sword and become a demon slayer yourself?”

“I could hardly do a push up, I haven't even taken up a sword yet–

“But you will, and that is enough right now.” His words are comforting, “I assume nothing of significance is happening right now, otherwise you would have told me. Therefore, I ask you to only focus on training and getting stronger.”

A pause follows, before his voice slices through the silence.

“Actually, that is an order.”

“What?”

“I am ordering you to focus on training, and training alone. When the time comes when I need to know something, only then do I give you permission to think of something else.” he smiles, “You cannot refuse, I am the master, after all.”

Gosh, was he always this cocky?

His words came from a good place though, and you felt tension leave your shoulders and a smile creep up your lips.

“Yes, Master”

Chapter Text

A few weeks had passed and your body had gone through drastic changes over that time. It turned out being worked like a dog from dawn to dusk, every day, could turn you into a different person.

Running for two hours had started to feel like child's play, and no longer was doing a singular push up a hard task – rather now you were made to look incompetent whilst handling a wooden sword against two of the greatest warriors in the entire corps.

You were better than you were when you first picked one up. You had no doubt you looked akin to a newborn deer learning to walk for the first time, but instead of learning to walk, you were learning to swing a dangerous sword shaped stick and trying not to hit yourself by accident.

You were still nowhere near the level of the two pillars who trained you. Sometimes you'd have solo sessions with one of them, sometimes one would drop by, but leave for a mission and if you were really lucky, you'd be beaten up by both!

You’re sluggish, pick up your feet more.

Careful, you almost tripped over yourself!

You'd be as good as dead in demon territory – do better.

You’ll get there eventually! I can already see improvements!

Yeah, they definitely had different teaching methods.

You had been sent to the butterfly estate for a particularly nasty cut you'd sustained whilst sparing with the water pillar. He had accidentally (though you don't think it was an accident) poked you straight in the eye with the point of the wooden sword.

You didn't even get an apology! Only a stoic, ‘you'd be dead right now if I was a demon.'

What demon was going around poking people in the eyes with a glorified stick?

A person who definitely wasn't happy was Shinobu. You had formed a sort of odd friendship with her, despite the language barrier.

You had gotten better at the Japanese language thanks to Kagaya's teachings, though you couldn't speak as well as you understood it.

You could make out the insect pillars scary (empty) threats at the water pillar. A smile that she wore only when she was particularly pissed off. Something along the lines of ‘he's lucky I haven't poked his eyes out yet’, whilst she carefully inspected your own.

When you were discharged with an eyepatch that made you look like a sorry pirate – you were given a (passive aggressive) pat on the head and a ‘tell me if he does it again, okay?’.

You reminded yourself to never anger that woman.

When you got back, Chiyo basically cackled in your face like a wicked witch, before gesturing over to some sort of basket with fresh fruit and a simple ‘sorry’ written in Kanji.

Chiyo claimed she had no idea who sent it, saying it appeared out of nowhere, but you and her could hazard a guess as to who left it.

You accepted his apology silently, and training returned to normal.

After a week passed, Kagaya had summoned you out of a training session. You apologised to Kyojuro, who had taken up training you for the day.

No problem! Best not be late! I'll be here waiting for you!

And now here you were, in the familiar room where you took your lessons in. The fresh air from the open door was pleasant, however what caught your eye most was the fact Kagaya sat with a crow on his arm.

“Do you know whose crow this is, [Y/N]?” the master asks, and the crow turns to look at you with beady eyes. You weren't exactly familiar with the crows by name aside from the iconic sparrow (who isn't even a crow so it doesn't count).

“Uh… no?”

CAW! What did they say, Master? What did they say? CAW!

“This is Matsuemon Tennoji, he is assigned to the demon slayer Kamado Tanjiro.” he starts and you look confused. Why would he show you this crow?

“I've had reports of a demon in Asakusa, a district in Tokyo – in other words, a city. I recall a few weeks ago you mentioned Tanjiro going on a city mission, is it this one? If so, what was so special about it?”

Oh right, that.

Despite knowing what was going to happen, and how bad it was, you still had second thoughts.

Was it a good idea? What if telling Kagaya about the whole encounter would completely change the trajectory of the storyline?

Choices, Choices.

You won't know until your try

Damn this guy was good, planting seeds in your head like the world's best gardener.

“He'll meet Muzan, as well as four other demons.”

The image of the almighty master of the demon slayer corps basically breaking his neck to look at you with eyes as wide as plates would've made you laugh if you didn't know the gravity of the situation.

“Care to expand? Who are the other four?”

“Two ally demons – Tamayo and Yushiro. The other two I can't remember the names of, but they are defeated.”

Kagaya's shoulders return to their relaxed state. The presence of the demon king himself being known must be quite jarring, you think. However, he was familiar with Tamayo in some capacity, and knew she meant no harm.

“Then I assume he lives through it?”

“Yes, I'd recommend you send him regardless, actually”

God, you felt a bit evil sending the innocent demon slayer into the lion's den AKA coming face to face with the guy who murdered his entire family, however…

“Keeping the events as close to how they are meant to happen is best,” you reason, “it'll decrease the chances of the unexpected happening.”

You're vague with your words, hyper aware of the still gob-smacked crow. You wouldn't want him to snitch, considering how you recall how big his mouth was.

Kagaya looks at you thoughtfully, before nodding firmly, “Alright, I shall trust your instincts.”

And with that, he sends Matsuemon Tennoji back on his way with direct orders to not disclose any of the information shared in the room, just in case he suddenly understood English.

You feel guilty flood in your chest as he disappears into the distance.

Notes:

SECRET ALERT!

> Giyuu did genuinely feel bad, though he can neither confirm nor deny whether poking MC in the eye was an accident. Getting roughed up makes for better warriors, or so he believes.

> The fresh fruit is a very expensive gift in Japan, however since MC is foreigner, they had no idea!

Chapter 11: [11] To Train Or To Torture?

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Two days had passed, and within that time you had both trained and gone to your Japanese lesson. Kagaya had personally praised your decision to send Tanjiro onto the mission to Asakusa, saying it had all worked out.

You did visibly cringe when he mentioned that he had gotten quite hurt however, and you knew that he would only get more hurt. However, the next mission to the mansion was very important to Tanjiro's character, as well as the introduction of Zenitsu and Inosuke – you made sure to make a point that Tanjiro had to be sent there despite his injuries.

Kagaya seemed slightly reluctant, but again remarked how he trusted you, and sent out new orders.

You were gonna have to do a lifetime worth of repenting to the guy when (if) you met him.

How would you even explain it to him? Hey Tanjiro, you're a great guy and all, but I actually know your entire life story and how traumatised you are by the massacre of your family! I also sent you on back to back missions when you were probably in so much pain you wanted to scream, but hey, it's for the plot and–

You're distracted.

The monotonous voice storms through your thoughts, and you feel a strike to the side of your neck.

The water pillar was not scared to beat you up.

Sorry.

Again.

Often your training sessions with Giyuu were like this. The guy didn't like conversations, and you didn't understand half of what he said, and even if you did, you weren't the most talented at carrying conversations, let alone starting them.

You guess this is what happens when you put a borderline social recluse and an introverted foreigner in a room (garden) together?

He was a lot more graceful in movement compared to Rengoku – he had explained (and from what Chiyo had translated), that water breathing was more dance-like, and that ‘going with the flow’ was very much the approach.

On the other hand, Kyojuro had mentioned that Flame breathing required confident strikes and a lot more muscle rather than speed.

When the topic of what breathing style you would learn, you were unsure. You weren't the fastest or strongest, and you were definitely not confident or graceful. Moreover, you were sure that you looked like a fish out of water when you were handed a sword, as could be heard by Chiyo's grating laugh whenever you were hit down.

However, you had determination. Something Kyojuro remarked is the only thing a demon slayer needed. Little did he know, it wasn't for a reason as noble as his whole ‘the strong must protect the weak’ thing or whatever.

No, you just knew that you wanted to look as cool as them eventually. The walking around with a sword was so sick, and you couldn't wait to be able to do the whole breathing technique thing – fire, water or whatever the universe had in store for you.

Eventually, it was decided you would be trained to use both Flame and Water, and that it could be something you used to your advantage.

‘Train’ was a funny word to the pillars though.

You would rather call it something akin to torture.

When they introduced you to total concentration breathing, you thought your lungs would collapse and your eyes would pop out your skull. Not only that, Chiyo had taken it upon herself to smash your head in every time you stopped, including at three in the morning.

Weren't old people supposed to get good sleep? Probably. Not Chiyo, though.

To credit the old hag, it made you master it faster than you initially expected too.

Doing anything physical paired with the total concentration breathing started off like hell on earth. However, it proved to be a great asset when you got the hang of it. You could run at least five times the amount of time, at triple the speed. Your muscles no longer became tired when you held up the sword and swung it, you could do push ups in your sleep.

And now, you were deep into the season of spring, summer rearing its head. The wooden sword had been upgraded to a real one. You were clumsy at first, and thankfully both Giyuu and Rengoku had kept with the wooden ones for your own health and safety.

However, you felt more assured with your movements with a real one. It was heavier, and was easier to follow in movements, momentum played a big role. Giyuu himself had commented how the way you handled the blade fluidly was a good fit for water breathing.

A compliment from the man himself? You would have to put it on your grave stone.

Rengoku aided you in confidence and control, and pointed out how your strikes had become more powerful – ones fit for killing demons.

Fit for killing demons.

The reward for the blood, sweat and tears you had shed. The hands that had been scarred and became calloused. You were acknowledged to have become a potentially formidable slayer in the future – especially since you were trained by two of the strongest in the entire corps.

You had also practiced the first few forms of both Flame and Water, and you had gotten a “Great!” and a “Satisfactory.

Kagaya had said how you could probably go out on a mission soon to prove your worth, or wait until the final selection next spring. Yeah, that was far too long to wait.

You had asked for updates on a certain main protagonist, and you were told that he was currently staying at a wisteria estate with two 'weird people’ as said by Tanjiro's crow.

Everything was staying on track story wise, and it made you breathe a sigh of relief.

Soon, the Mount Nagatumo fiasco would take place, something you hadn't told Kagaya about yet. It would be one of the most dangerous missions in the story line, with so many casualties it made you feel sick.

But they were necessary sacrifices, you told yourself.

Yet, something in your soul pushed back.

You yourself had made a personal vow you would save as many people as you could. The people being the people (or characters) you knew about.

What made the people who are destined to be killed in Mount Nagatumo less deserving of being saved? Simply by the fact that they weren't main characters? They probably had family and friends who wished someone saved them too.

You swallow hard as you try to drift to sleep.

Could you really save everyone?

You don't know, and with this in mind, finally pass out.

SECRET NOTE

> Chiyo missed out on a whole week of sleep just to make sure MC mastered total concentration breathing. How did she stay awake for so long? We'll never know.

Chapter 12: [12] No Less

Chapter Text

You've become quite talented, [Y/N]-san! It's an honour to see you flourish!” Kyojuro remarked.

You were currently on what was supposed to be a water break, however the flame pillar had insisted you eat something – seemingly pulling out a box out of nowhere. A selection of different foods arranged in neat compartments.

Over the nearly three months you had been here, Kyojuro (and surprisingly Giyuu) had become more than a mere mentor. The relationship became more friendly and casual – especially since you saw both of them for a majority of your days aside from when you slept.

You had even nagged Giyuu a few times to secretly train you during the night, he relented after you begged (annoyed) him enough.

Rengoku was a lot harder to bargain with – he always argued that missing sleep was bad for you. Curse him and his pure soul.

They were kind of like big brothers, aside from when they beat the daylights out of you, though that wasn't exactly out of the ordinary from having an older sibling.

You opened the box and grabbed the chopsticks that sat snugly in a compartment of its own. When you started to eat, you made sure to give the man a thumbs up to show you liked it.

I made it myself!” he stated, his chest puffed out in pride, “Eating well is just as important as slaying demons, you know!

 “Thank You, Rengoku-san.

You've also become better at Japanese! You are on a bright path!

Thank You, Rengoku-san.

I hear the master is planning a mission for you soon! It will be difficult, no doubt!

Thank you, Reng– wait what!?”

The fiery haired man laughed heartily, he may not have realised what you have said, but he could probably make out through your tone the shock.

Yes! I hear it's related to multiple slayer disappearances up a mountain!

Mountain…”

Yes, a mountain!

A mountain.

You must've gone silent, as Kyojuro questioned what was wrong. You replied saying it was nothing, though he seemed unconvinced. He didn't push it though, and you were thankful.

After a few minutes, all the food was gone, and the water had been drunk, and you both returned to training.

The moon had risen by the time you made it to the Ubuyashiki estate. You had asked Chiyo to send a request to see Kagaya whilst you trained with Kyojuro. Not long after she sent the message, a crow delivered that you could come when you were ready.

Turns out, you got caught up in training more than you really should. Giyuu had arrived at some point, and taken over teaching you more water breathing, whilst Kyojuro left for his own mission. And after six hours more, it had become night and Giyuu released you from training.

Chiyo had remarked you trained a lot, maybe too much. On most days, you trained for nearly seventeen hours (Including regular breaks, meals and all of that good stuff that Chiyo, Kyojuro AND Giyuu dragged you to do), from when the day was still dark, to when the night took over.

You didn't have the privilege of time like slayers such as Tanjiro, Zenitsu and (as far as you knew) Inosuke did. How long did they train? At least 2 years?

You needed to get to their level, and hopefully more, in a fraction of that time. You were lucky Kagaya had assigned such capable individuals to train you. It was gruelling and made you want to cry most days. Your muscles ached and you were probably injured in multiple places that you chose to ignore all in the name of needing to get better.

However, you hadn't even seen a demon, let alone faced one head on. It made your palms sweat and heart race.

Demons were not fictional, they were real. That degree of evil was real, creatures were actively hunting human beings as you waited for the master of the demon slayer corps to appear – and you could not save them.

“[Y/N]?”

When did Kagaya get here?

“Sorry, I was spacing out.”

“I can see that,” the master stated, “What did you want to talk to me about?”

You felt a little bad for keeping the sickly man up so late, but you had good reason.

“Rengoku was telling me about how you were thinking about sending me on a mission to a mountain soon today.”

The master hummed in affirmation.

“This mountain… it wouldn't be one called Mount Nagatumo, would it?”

The room turns silent, before Kagaya nods solemnly.

“Yes. Every child* I've sent hasn't come back. I assume you have something to tell me regarding the reason? Or are you simply having second thoughts about becoming a demon slayer?”

You shake your head, eyebrows knotting together in worry. How many people had already died on that forsaken mountain?

“That mountain has a demon ‘family’ on it,” you explain. You hated to say the next sentence.

“One of them is a member of the twelve kizuki.”

You swallow the lump forming in your throat as Kagaya brings his hand to his chin in thought. He hums in understanding.

“I suppose it does make sense,” his expression is sullen. You can only imagine how it felt knowing you were part of the reason someone had died to a demon.

“In the book,” you start, “That's where Tanjiro and Nezuko are taken from to the headquarters and accepted.”

Kagaya nods along, “are you saying it is another necessary occurrence?"

You purse your lips in thought. Were all those deaths really necessary? Surely the acceptance of Tanjiro and Nezuko is bound to happen as long as Nezuko doesn't end up turning on humans out of nowhere. Did all those people really have to die?

“[Y/N]?”

“Yes, but no.”

Kagaya looks on in confusion.

“It needs to happen, however…” you inhale shakily, “I would like to go, and save as many people as possible.”

Was it stupid? Most probably.

Going on your first ever mission on a demon-ridden death mountain with a twelve kizuki sprinkled on top wasn't the brightest idea. You couldn't help but wonder if someone who died on the mountain had their first mission there too.

The master smiles softly, nodding thoughtfully.

“I wouldn't expect any less from you.”

Notes:

*in case of any confusion/if you've forgotten, kagaya refers to demon slayers as his children!

Chapter 13: [13] Take It

Notes:

sorry for not updating, I got behind with the pre written chapters and wanted to catch back up with them!

Chapter Text

The next day is chaotic.

Chiyo shakes you awake as usual, and you worry the end of the world has occurred from the look etched on her wrinkled face.

When you asked her about it over breakfast, she had explained a crow had come to the estate whilst you snoozed. It had dropped off a letter and squawked that only you were allowed to read it.

You retreated to your room when Chiyo handed it to you, muttering that if the crow ever came back, it would regret shouting in her ‘delicate eardrums’.

When you open the piece of paper, you're met with delicate handwriting that screamed rich. It was in perfect English, and the Kanji at the bottom spelt the Ubuyashiki name, so you were able to assume who it was from.

It explained how Kagaya had sent out orders for a new batch of slayers to go to Mount Nagatumo. Those orders had also gone to the wisteria estate where the trio was staying, you inwardly cringed at how once again, you were technically sending Tanjiro on another trauma fest. More repentance would be needed in the future.

The next paragraph was the jarring part though, and you were sure you mirrored Chiyo's expression from the morning.

It said how he extends those same orders to you, how the journey would be a day or two, and that you would be leaving as soon as possible. A katana and uniform had been sent to the estate, and that this mission would be your final selection.

If you failed (which you assume would be to die or seriously wounded), you would not become a demon slayer, and live the rest of your days at the headquarters (or in a coffin you guess).

When you get dressed into the fresh demon slayer uniform, you feel your legs and arms become numb. Perhaps your limbs were in denial? Or going into fight or flight? You weren't sure, even as you stepped into the main room.

You're met with three familiar figures who have made your experience both hell and bearable.

Chiyo had guiltily admitted she had read the letter after the crow shouted in her ear out of spite, and immediately called for the Kyojuro and Giyuu to come for some reason.

This was to be expected! I have no doubt that you will pass with flying colours!

You'll be fine, you did well in training

“WHAT IS THAT KID THINKING?! SENDING A YOUNG SPROUT LIKE YOU OUT THERE!? IT'S NOT EVEN BEEN FOUR MONTHS!” Chiyo is the loudest out of the bunch despite being the smallest in frame and older than all of your ages combined.

“AND THIS!” she holds up the katana that was sent to you. It's basic, similar in style to the ones you used for training, albeit sharper. It fits snugly into the plain black scabbard, “HOW CHEAP! NO STUDENT OF MINE IS GOING OUT WITH THIS!”

“But you didn't even train me–”

“AND DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THAT!” This time she points at the plain black haori that was sent alongside the uniform. It staved off the cold wind (though it was summer, so you didn't really need to worry about that anymore except for at night time), and had pockets you could store things like medicine in, “A CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY! HOW HIDEOUS! I WILL NOT HAVE IT! I WILL NOT!”

She stomps away, and the three of you follow her as she bashes her sword cane along the ground. She opens a cabinet of some sort and it reveals a single haori hanging up.

It was a mix of white and blue coming together in a winding river like pattern. Little flowers that resembled white water lilies scattered around, and you could make out the shape of herons in flight. The clothing was finished off with gold around the edges, as well as largely on the sleeve ends. The gold accents reached around the fabric in faint vein-like patterns. It is beautiful and ornate you acknowledge internally.

“Back in my day, we valued looking good whilst in battle! No student of mine will look ugly whilst fighting evil!” She rips the black haori off of you before you can blink and you're surprised by her strength. You have no choice but to put the haori she holds out on. The fabric is more breathable and flows freely. You can tell it's well made though.

Finally, she thrusts her sword-cane in your face and you look at the handle in confusion.

“Take it with you.”

“But–”

“Take. It.”

“Yes ma'am.”

“Good!” she nods as you take the katana, unsheathing it to take a good look at the weapon once again. The blue shimmers a brilliant hue, still swirling along the blade. You take note of the white tassel still attached to the handle, you'll need to make sure it doesn't come off by accident, “My precious baby has never failed me, and it will not fail you either!” she declares before pushing you towards the front door whilst simultaneously stuffing snacks and bandages into your pockets.

You can only wonder what Kyojuro and Giyuu take away from the conversation, however you have no time to question it as you stare down the road. A crow circles overhead. Kyojuro makes it known that it is his crow, and that he is planning on visiting his little brother for the next few days, and would have no work for the bird.

Good Luck! You'll do great, I know it! I'll have to buy a treat for when you get back!

You'll be okay, just be careful, please.

“If I see so much as a follicle of hair missing from that head of yours, there will be hell to pay, got it, kid?”

Your heart warms at the sincerity of the three people in front of you. All giving varying looks (and gestures) of encouragement. How lucky you were.

Thank you, everyone.” you nod, “I will try my best, I promise.

Chapter Text

The journey was laughably unexceptional. You'd occasionally munch on the snacks Chiyo had forced you to take with you, and that's about how fun it got. Kyojuro's crow, Kaname as you recall, diligently led you to the mountain you'd been assigned to and as you saw the peak rearing its head as the sun fell, you felt a pit form in your stomach.

Could this be your reckoning? What if you never saw the sunrise again? What about Chiyo? Rengoku? Giyuu?

They'd probably take turns dragging you out of hell if you died, Chiyo no doubt leading the way. You huff at the thought.

After another half an hour or so, you make it to the base of the mountain, thick trees beckoning you forward with their branches. The fact the sun completely fell, the moon having taken its place, made it hard to see inside.

It looked scary as hell.

CAW! Eliminate all demons you find! CAW!” You hear the crow shout, “Assist your fellow demon slayers in battle! CAW!” And with that, he flew away to god knows where.

You bite your lip as you pass the threshold of trees that separated the mountain from the rest of the world. You unsheathe your (Chiyo's) blade from the scabbard, and immediately take note of the ground.

It's littered with webs, and you swear you see stains of crimson on the dirt. You also remind yourself of those little spiders that have the tendency to bite and turn you into balding-head-spiders for the creepy ‘older brother’.

Yeah, you'd rather just die at that point.

You catch the scent of faint iron and, as much as you hated to admit it, death. How many people had already died on this mountain? Had the mother demon already started her puppeteering?

As if on cue, you hear a sound akin to something being tightened, and you feel something rapidly approaching from behind you. You turn to deflect the object, but you stop yourself from swinging your sword as a body covers your own, the screeching of meeting swords claws at your eardrums.

Finally! I've been waiting for backup for hours now!” The visibly exhausted man exhales, wiping sweat from his brow. You have no time to protest when he grabs your sleeve and sprints away from a group of strung up slayers. He must've deflected someone who targeted you.

You find yourselves crouched in a high bush, the man clutching his chest to catch his breath. He's shaking visibly – was it from nerves or adrenaline, or maybe both?

W-what's your rank?” He asks, finally looking up from the ground, “My name is Murata by the way!

Rank? You swear you've heard that word before, but your brain just HAD to forget it's meaning right now.

Hello?"

Of course! He wanted to know your rank! However, there was one problem…

“Uh… I don't have a rank?

A moment of silence follows, and Murata's eyebrows raise in surprise.

What? What do you mean?

I am currently undergoing my final selection as per the master's orders.

The man's mouth opens as if to say something, before his blank expression turns to horror. His hand comes to cup his face and he bends down to lay it on the ground.

Are you okay?

No rank!? Final Selection!? We need a hashira as quickly as possible, not some unqualified rookie! You should leave, this isn't the place to be messing around!” He mutters, and you feel his hand grab your shoulder as if to shoo you away. You furrow your brow at the man.

I am here on orders to assist with killing the demons on this mountain. I cannot go back.

You hear him groan, however another sound catches your attention. You look through the thick leaves and notice a limp slayer making their way towards your location. Just as Murata is about to say something again, you cover his mouth.

The strung up man who walk past the bush is mangled, almost beyond recognition. The bones in his arms and legs are exposed to the elements, and the contents of his stomach pool out. His eyes are slightly open and bloodshot, whilst his mouth ajar pools a thick red. You pray that the man is dead as a small mercy.

You let Murata remove your hand and you turn to the visibly anxious man. You grab his shoulders as he watches the dead slayer in the distance. You wonder if he was a member of Murata's squad.

Murata-san, help is coming.

His shoulders burst up in surprise and relief, “Really?

You nod in response, before sighing, “However I must leave you here.

Murata deflates again, muttering a ‘what?

You feel bad. The demon slayer in front of you had watched his friends seemingly turn on each other out of the blue, and after hours of waiting for backup, all he gets is you. You who will leave him to fend for himself in the mountains. You who hopes that the storyline continues as it should, and that Giyuu and Shinobu are dispatched. You who cannot bring yourself to kill the mother demon out of fear.

You wrestle with yourself in your mind as you look at him. If you stole the kill from Tanjiro, he wouldn't be made aware of the twelve kizuki, which could cause all sorts of problems story wise.

It always came down to the damn story.

Murata-san, I promise that you will survive this.” You say, you hope you conviction is shown through your tone, “And I promise that there will be other slayers here soon, and that the Hashira will arrive.

what about all the people the mother demon will kill, just because you don't want to take a risk?

He looks at you in disbelief. He doesn't seem to believe you, you can't blame him. He probably thought you were going into hysterics.

Murata-san, it's better you stay hidden here until help arrives,” you start, pointing to the gathering of dead (or dying) slayers with their swords drawn and ready to strike. You see Murata cringe, “When they do, cut the strings from their backs, alright?”

Murata gapes at you, and eyebrow raised.

Hang on, you've been here for what, five minutes and you're not even a demon slayer, and you've already figured everything out or something? Why do you get special ordered from the master anyway?” He interrogates, but you shake your head firmly.

I can't tell you that and…” You search for a good excuse, “I just have a good sense?” You sound unconvincing, but Murata nods slowly. It's clear he doesn't believe you either.

Do it anyway, please?” You plead. Murata sighs, and you can't tell if its frustration or defeat.

Fine. But don't come crying to me if you get hurt or something, And if I get hurt I'll…” He pauses before he shakes his head, “You just be careful, this isn't a place for a final selection to be.”

You nod and squeeze his shoulder to reassure the older man, “You should be careful too. Don't let the spiders attach the strings to you, either. Tell everyone you see the same thing.” You say, “And remember to cut the string from their backs when the others arrive.

He nods and you finally release your grip. Slowly leaving the cover of the plants and back into the dark woods, careful not to alert the ‘puppets’.

You can only hope help really does arrive soon.

Chapter 15: [15] Chance

Notes:

for the sake of the story, breathing styles are also real (as in the visual aspect is canonically seen, not just a representation) because i say so!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

You'd been running around for quite a while now – maybe thirty minutes or so?

You were torn between being happy about not coming into contact with the upper five, and being annoyed that you hadn't stumbled upon ANY demons. You didn't really count the tiny spiders crawling around, they were easily crushed or avoided.

Where the hell were the real demons?! Were you late or something? Did everyone beat you to it?

No, that couldn't be it. Murata had alluded to the fact he had been here for hours by himself (if you don't count his squad members that became victims of the mother spider). If the demons were dead. You'd have seen another soul by now. Or maybe Kaname would have swooped down from wherever he was to tell you to head back.

GET AWAY! RUN!” A holler came from amidst the trees, “DON'T LOOK BACK! ALERT THE MASTER IMMEDIATELY!”

You hear the dragging of feet and frantic footsteps. You immediately start heading towards the voices.

Are you crazy?! Why the hell would I leave you? You can't even walk, stupid!” the person grunts

YOU DON’T GET IT! SHE'S COMING! SHE'LL KILL US BOTH!

The voices become muffled as you make your way through a clearing, until a crazed laugh cuts through the forest.

Trying to escape is futile,” a feminine voice states, and as you get closer, a girl facing away from you can be seen. Except this isn't a girl, not a normal one anyway. She had unnaturally white skin and hair, her clothes matching. The only other colour you make out is a deep red.

My cocoons are incredibly resilient, and soon you'll be dissolved completely,” She giggles. You can't help but gape. Strung high up in the branches are over a dozen of these ‘cocoons' she speaks of. The one she stands in front of shakes, and you make out two voices.

They must have been the ones that (unknowingly) guided you here. The realisation that they were quite literally running for their lives whilst you were out prancing around in the woods complaining about not having anything to do makes you sick.

However, now you have the chance to make it up to them, and to save two more lives.

And a chance to finally put everything you learned into practice.

Water Breathing Second Form: Water Wheel!

You immediately dash past the spider demon and aim for the cocoon that had entrapped the two demon slayers. A brilliant blue emerges from the blade in your hands, and you leap from the ground.

The cocoon is sliced in half, revealing two slayers huddled together, crouched so as to not get caught by your blow. You assume they heard you use the technique, and acted accordingly.

You waste no time grabbing the both by the backs of the collar, hauling them from the ball of threads and run into a thick section of bush that had enough cover and protection.

Take these.” You throw a roll of bandage from your pocket that Chiyo had stuffed in, “Stay here. Help will be here soon.

You don't look back as you leave them back in the bush. As you expected, the spider demon pursued you, a scowl on her face. Though you catch the slight look of panic etched into her expression.

You knew her. She was forced into an older sister role for Rui's sick fantasy, and was basically tortured when she did not meet his expectations. Shinobu killed her in the series.

You really think hiding them in that bush will save them?” She sneers, “No matter, I'll just kill you first, and then get them later!”

You did not have time to wait for Shinobu it seemed.

The sister immediately aims her hands out towards you, and a flurry of thick threads sprout from her palms. They're fast, and rapidly approach. You grit your teeth and raise your sword, taking a deep breath.

It was clear she had the intent to kill you, and that there was no time to waste. You push your doubts and inexperience to the side.

Water Breathing, Third Form: Flowing Dance!

You run headfirst into the attack, dodging the end of the threads, allowing your blade to meet the fabric. Water once again shoots from your blade, only this time you allow momentum to create a flowing motion. It really did feel like dancing.

As you near the demon, you raise your blade to angle with her neck. She raises her hand to block it, however your sword slices through them like butter. Her eyes widen in surprise, and you wonder if you mirror her expression. All that work did pay off.

Unfortunately, your internal celebration is cut short as you feel a dull pain in your stomach before you go flying. She had kicked you square in the gut to disrupt your technique.

You unceremoniously land in the bush you placed the two injured slayers into.

Groaning in pain, you force yourself up before grabbing your blade that had fallen from your grip.

AH! ARE YOU OKAY?!” One of them asks. It's an older man – black hair and bright green eyes. His leg is mangled into turning the completely wrong way, and his head has a bandage wrapped around it tightly.

Beside him is a woman, her honey hue eyes are wide as she grips her own sword with her left hand awkwardly. Her strawberry blonde hair is a mess – she doesn't look any better than her companion. A bandage is wrapped around the top of her right hand in a tourniquet – some of her fingers are missing, you fight the urge to cringe. Her haori is off and her uniform shirt is melted away (probably from the acid, you think), her abdomen is also bandaged, albeit clumsily – fresh blood wets the fabric.

You huff and stand up. You had no time to think about what you could've done, or debate on whether their injuries made them a lost cause. You had to try simply because you had the chance right now.

You hear the sister demon laugh from beyond the plant. You could make out her figure holding out her hands again in preparation – likely to launch an attack that would ensnare all three of you.

It seemed water breathing simply wouldn't cut it. It was fast, however it didn't demand as much power – its unpredictability was a plus. However, you were nothing more than a cornered animal right now, a rabbit at the mouth of a lion's den with only one way to go. You needed control, something that would dominate and ensure victory.

You look back at the two injured slayers, who stare back. You feel something warm drip from your chin. Your nose was bleeding, the iron taste lingering on your tongue, You must've hit your face on the ground when you went flying.

Not to mention your stomach ached from being kicked by what felt like a horse at full force. You were lucky you didn't land funny on your wrist or something.

You hold the sword out in front of you again, eyes locked onto the spider demon. She stands with a twisted smile on her face – she was waiting for you to come out. It would be harder for her cocoon to hit its target with the bush in the way, or maybe she wanted to see the horror in your expression before you were swallowed up by the acid traps.

Like hell you would let that happen, of course.

Flame Breathing, First Form: Unknowing Fire.”

You race towards the spider demon. Her face illuminates a bright orange and red, flames locking her face as you bring the blade swiftly to her neck. The first form of flame breathing allowed users to move at tremendous speeds and deliver a single blow. Perfect for a demon that had let their guard down in favour of sadistic tendencies.

Her mouth is agape, pupils tiny as her head falls to the ground with a dull thud. Her eyebrows knot in fury and she stares up at you, she shouts curses as tears of frustration fall from her eyes. You wonder if she felt remorse for her actions. The series didn't really make her personal thoughts on the whole killing thing clear – and from what you remembered, a lot of it was for survival and self preservation. You understood it to an extent, but couldn't help feeling disgust.

The way her expression morphs into one of sorrow as she turns to ashes makes you think that maybe, even for a second, she felt guilt for what she had done.

Notes:

SECRET ALERT!

> The sister demon didnt exactly feel guilty, rather a deep sense of regret. She did what she did to survive, and despite being a demon, knows it was wrong. If she was turned into a demon in her next life, would she do it again if it meant she lived? probably. She wishes she didnt have to choose between her humanity or survival though.

Maybe next time, she can live a long and fulfilled life as a human, without any regrets.

Chapter Text

YOU KILLED IT! DID YOU SEE THAT AZUMI!? WE'RE SAV–

Shut up, Isamu! What if there's another demon around and your big mouth attracts them?

You had made your way back to the bush and were met with great praise from the man as soon as you went inside. You think he may be loopy from his head injury or something based on the way he grips your hands as he sways. The way he mutters his thanks is a little off putting too.

I'm sorry about him, he's always like this.” The lady apologises. You notice how she grips her side with her good hand, taking deep, but pained breaths.

You're not sure what to do, should you carry them back out? Who were you kidding, you were strong now, but not strong enough to lug around two heavily injured people with the threat of demons hanging over your head.

Kocho-sama said she'll be arriving soon, and that we should pick up the injured and deceased.

I hate to say it, but… there isn't a lot left of these people to collect.

You perk up at the voices. You hear shuffling around and multiple voices, as well as the sound of ripping. You cautiously exit the bush after telling the two injured to stay put whilst you went to check it out.

What you see is multiple kakushi. Some have stretchers, others carrying bags with what you assume is medicine. A few of them are cutting open cocoons carefully, you notice them pull out ripped pieces of uniforms and pieces of blades. You cringe – they were picking out whatever remained of the fallen slayers, probably to bury or to send to their families.

There's a lot to get through guys, better get to wo– AH!” You're startled by a scream and turn to it, a kakushi with a piece of parchment and pen looks at you with wide eyes, “Geez, you gave me a scare standing there like a creep!

Wow, what a way with words.

I'm guessing you're the one who killed the demon?” he points to the pile of clothes that belonged to the spider demon, you nod, “well you did a good job, you're not injured are you?

No, but there's two over in that bush.” You point to the plant and the kakushi writes something down, getting the attention of a few others and sending them over.

Well, it sounds like the others are in a rough situation, you should probably go and help if you're feeling okay.

You nod, double checking your sword is in your scabbard before walking in the direction of where the kakushi pointed.

WAIT! WHAT'S YOUR NAME, SAVIOUR!?" A voice, belonging to the man you saved, shouts. You turn and see him being guided outside of the bush by two kakushi. The lady is not far behind, her eyes are also trained on you expectantly.

You feel a smile of pride creep up on you.

“[L/N] [Y/N].”

You don't see their reaction as they're carried off to who knows where, so you turn and start running in the general direction of where you recall Murata to be.

The kakushi spoke of Shinobu arriving ‘soon’. You weren't sure how long ‘soon’ would be, was she already here and dealing with something else? Or was she still on her way? Was Giyuu there too?

You hoped so. You may have gotten your first demon kill, but she was weak in the grand scheme of things, and you were not delusional enough to believe you would come out of a twelve kizuki fight unscathed, let alone at all.

What had injured those two back there so badly anyway? The sister demon didn't give you the impression she would be so hands on in combat that she would make people loose fingers and twist their legs at awkward angles.

Could it have been Rui? No.

If it were Rui, they'd probably be dead.

Your train of thought is stopped when you recognise a particular rock. It was one you had made a mental note of when you left Murata as a sort of ‘breadcrumb’. However, there was no Murata and no puppets to be seen.

The blood littering the ground was a testament to the fact that battle had taken place here. It's likely the kakushi had picked up the bodies then. It also meant the mother demon was already dead, and that the trio was already here.

You were a little surprised. You were half expecting to hear the thunder strike everyone hears in the series as a signal that Zenitsu was present, and therefore the plot was in full swing. Maybe you were so focused on battle you missed it, or maybe you were so far away that you just didn't hear it.

Whatever it was, it didn't matter, what did matter was getting this whole fiasco done as quickly as possible.

Carrying on, you eventually come to a stream, you don't miss the blood that stains the rocks. If you recall correctly, this is where Tanjiro and Inosuke fought the father demon–

The father demon. You'd forgotten about him.

Could he have been the one responsible for the injuries sustained by those other demon slayers? It would make sense considering their very violent nature, not to mention the brute force required to inflict them.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING AWAY GOD DAMMIT!

That voice. You'd know that voice from anywhere.

WHERE'D THAT BASTARD RUN OFF TOO!?

You followed the voice and into a passage of more trees (you'd need to take a break from trees after this) that bordered the stream, and lo and behold, a certain individual with a pig mask waving his swords around like a madman could be seen.

He looks up abruptly before pointing his chipped blades upwards.

THERE YOU ARE! I FOUND YOU, STUPID!

You gasp as you look up to where he's looking. Perched on a branch is a massive figure. The father demon.

He starts to shake, and the man in the pig mask cackles in delight. He thinks he's scared of him, you know better.

RUN!” You shout as you start running towards him, the slayer turns to you confused, “GET OUT OF THE WAY! MOVE!

You can only look on in horror, hand hovering over the handle of your sword, as the demon jumps from the branch having shed it’s old skin.

It's larger figure lands next to Inosuke, you have no time to scream another warning.

Chapter Text

This is terrible.

As soon as the spider demon landed, Inosuke thought it to be a grand idea to try and size the much larger creature up. In response, the spider demon hit him so hard he flew around like a ping pong ball.

You almost forget how to breathe when the boar headed slayer tries to retaliate using his swords, however they snap like twigs as soon as they make contact with the demon father's skin.

What are you doing just standing around? Help him, idiot!

You immediately start running towards your fellow slayer, gritting your teeth as he's picked up like a pebble by the neck.

Stay away from my family!” the demon screeches, its rows of teeth bared. Blood emerges from the pig mask, you inhale.

Flame Breathing, First Form: Unknowing Fire!

You dash towards, aiming for the arm of the beast that currently gripped onto the slayer. You were lucky the demon either didn't notice you, or was too preoccupied to care. You could work with either.

Your blazing sword comes down on the limb, and with little resistance, it falls to the ground. However, the momentum is hard to come down from, so you fly ungracefully into a tree trunk back first. You'd have to work on that.

Inosuke (and the arm) falls to the ground with a loud thud, and you cringe as the creature screeches at a high pitch, bringing your hands to shield your ears.

It's multiple eyes and towering body snaps to you, and you struggle to gain your footing from taking the rough landing moments before. As a shadow falls over you, you feel something warm spray your face, followed by multiple more thuds.

What the hell was that? Did the father demon summon a bunch of little mini ones or something? Did he just spray venom at you? Which one was worse? What if you turn into a creepy little bald spider?

Are you okay?

Wait a second, you knew that voice! Deep and monotonous, kind of sounds like he has no will to live!

You look up. No longer is there a looming figure of the father demon, instead stood the water pillar, who was currently sheathing his sword with a deadpan expression.

The warmth you felt must've been the demon's blood, you hope it'll disintegrate and leave no stain, lest you want to feel Chiyo's wrath.

Tomioka-san! You're here!” You exclaim. You should've expected it really, being that this is supposed to happen, however other things understandably took up your focus.

He nods and looks you up and down silently. He seems to be checking for injuries.

I'm okay, Tomioka-san. Ino– I mean, that guy over there isn't looking that good though.

The man turns around to face the boar headed boy, who was currently staring right back at him with what seemed to be awe.

You… YOU FIGHT ME RIGHT NOW, HALF AND HALF HAORI! AND YOU BIRD HAORI!” He suddenly points, you tilt your head. ‘bird haori’? he must be talking about the herons, but is that really all he could think of to call you? Chiyo would be throwing a fit if she heard that.

YOU TWO CUT AND KILLED A TWELVE KIZUKI! IF I BEAT YOU…” he points to himself in a dramatic display, “THEN I WILL BECOME THE STRONGEST!

Go back and train more, fool.

WHAAAAAAAAT!?” Inosuke screams, you cringe. He's almost as bad as the father demon.

That wasn't a twelve kizuki,” the water pillar pulls out a rope as inosuke continues his furious rambling, “I will not fight someone who doesn't even know the extent of their own injuries.

Giyuu wipes his hands off and he turns back to you, ignoring the feral corps member now tied to a tree.

You should stay here,” he starts, “We don't know how many demons are left on the mountain, and this one,” he points to Inosuke with a scowl, “is a free meal if unattended

You nod hesitantly and he pats your shoulder as he walks past. You're surprised how expressive he's being (for him anyway).

Kocho-san and the kakushi will be here soon, I'll be sure to report to the master personally about your performance when we get back.” he says, voice fading as he gets further and further way.

your performance'?

Was he watching you this whole time?

Your face grows hot. If he was, he saw you smash into the tree. He wouldn't be sad you chose to use fire breathing over water breathing, would he? You'd have to do some extra training sessions with him to make up for it.

You shake your head to rid yourself of the thoughts and look back to Inosuke, who was now suspiciously quiet. He was out cold.

You grit your teeth. Everything would turn out okay (probably), and the only demon remaining was Rui (probably). You could technically just go out and leave the guy but…

You can't in your good conscience leave inosuke by himself!

So, you resort to shouting around for a kakushi, and eventually another few stumble to where you're standing. You tell them that Inosuke needs urgent medical attention, and that you need to go and help the others. After a bit of a back and forth about staying here, you finally convince them to let you go (obviously without disclosing the fact you're painfully unqualified).

Thoughts wracked through your mind as you ran in the direction Giyuu went in. The energy in the general direction had become heavier as time passed, and whilst you weren't an expert at tracking demons, or had super human senses like the main trio did, you had been taught the basics on how to feel demonic presences.

Usually it was a lot colder, and it smelt of death (unfortunately for your sinuses). Or maybe the aura you felt was a placebo effect of everything you knew.

What if Giyuu doesn't make it on time to kill Rui? What if Shinobu kills Nezuko? SHUT UP BRAIN!

A rustle in the bushes gets your attention, and your heart nearly stops. An ambush? Had you forgotten a demon?

You recall not hearing Zenitsu's technique. Could it be the older brother? What if it's Rui and you're marching to your death?

You can't even stop yourself from running and turning back due to the speed you've built up, instead you opt to draw your sword and swing it in the direction of the figure, you see them emerge from the brush.

Water breathing…

This demon sure is breathing hard.

Your blade inches closer towards the creature.

Your eyes widen as the blade comes crashing down. This demon is being held by someone, and that someone looks oddly familiar, albeit bloodied and beaten.

That's… Nezuko and Tanjiro. Your sword is going to cut Nezuko's head off, and you can't stop it.

Chapter Text

Nezuko!” With surprising strength, the familiar slayer brings a broken sword to meet your own and pushes you back, straight back into a tree. His strength despite his injuries is surprising, maybe it's the power of protective instincts and someone nearly killing your sister?

However, he has no time to recover from the physical strain of pushing you, as an agile figure crashes into his back, causing Nezuko to fall out of his grip. Tanjiro gasps as the cloaked figure swings their own blade towards the girl.

The figure is yet another familiar slayer. A white cloak, black hair pulled into a pony tail and an iconic butterfly clip.

Nezuko, run! Get away!” He shouts as he fumbles to grasp the woman's uniform, however she deftly dodges his weak attempts. Nezuko runs away into the woods with the slayer in tow.

You're left, still against the tree, in shock. The scarred (literally and figuratively) slayer in front of you fighting for breaths, he looks at you absentently. His cuts are fresh and still bleeding.

Yikes, this is awkward.

You shake the feeling and get up. He flinches and you clench your fists. Have you ruined all chances at having positive rapport with the guy? You wouldn't be surprised. He probably thought you were about to go after his sister again, sword blazing.

You dig into the sleeves of your haori. Thankfully, you still had a roll of bandages left after giving one to the two injured back at the sister spider fiasco.

As you're about to approach him, a screech interrupts your actions overhead.

CAW! RESTRAIN THE ONES NAMED TANJIRO AND NEZUKO! BRING THEM TO HEADQUARTERS! CAW!” The crow flies past and gets fainter, until you hear more flapping of wings.

A crow lands on your shoulders, you stare at it and then back at Tanjiro. He returns it, albeit dazed. He's probably pretty out of it by now considering his injuries, though he seems to fight to keep his eyes open.

CAW! Message from the master himself, CAW!” The crow squawks, its voice is familiar. It's Kaname, Kyojuro's crow, “Final Selection completed successfully, CAW! Leave the rest to the demon slayers and report back to the headquarters as soon as possible!” He explains, “CAW! Your presence is required at the Ubuyashiki estate! CAW! Ubuyashiki estate!

Seems you did well.

Well enough, anyway.

You journey back, following the kakushi and the rest of the slayers, injured and well alike. You didn't see Giyuu or Shinobu anywhere, and even resorted to asking the kakushi where they were. You were then told how they were currently doing a sweep of the mountain to make sure no demons remained.

Talk about having your hands full.

The journey back takes about a day, and you're immediately hounded by Kaname to go to the Ubuyashiki estate. And now here you were, in the room, the door to the patio wide open to allow fresh air in and freshly brewed tea.

Kagaya sits in front of you with a smile, you can make out the satisfaction etched into it.

“Welcome back,” he greets, “I'm glad you made it back to us in one piece.”

What the hell was that supposed to mean?

“I'm glad too.” You kneel in front of the man who is already seated, serenely sipping his tea.

“Kaname reported that you slayed your first demon – a formidable one that had killed many of my children,” he starts, “You have my thanks and congratulations.”

He looks at you, you feel a bit awkward. What were you supposed to say to something so grim? How many had died before you got there to that demon?

“Many of those who fell to it had years of experience compared to you, I heard you protected two more of my children as well,” he nods to no one in particular, “Again, you have my thanks. It is clear that without your assistance, they likely wouldn't be alive right now. All of those who fell victim to it can now be at peace, thanks to you. You should be proud”

You bite your lip. Being put at peace shouldn't be the only option. The people that the girl killed should be able to breathe in fresh air, eat their favourite food, hug the ones they love. Now, they can't do any of those things. They are gone, and they can't come back.

“What are you thinking about? You have gotten awfully quiet.” He comments, you sigh.

“Nothing. It doesn't matter.”

He hums, albeit unconvinced. However, the man drops the topic.

“We have the Kamado siblings in our custody. Do you have anything to share that is of significance?”

You think for a moment. A lot happens in the series regarding the two – especially due to the whole being main character thing. However, you needed to keep the information relevant to the present, not the future.

“I want to make a request for when you hold the pillar meeting.”

His eyes widen slightly, before his expression melts into a smile again. He hadn't mentioned a pillar meeting taking place, but of course you knew about that. He nods for you to continue.

“I'll kill myself if Nezuko ever attacks or harms a human.”

Kagaya closes his eyes and inhales.

It's a drastic action, you know it. You'd be lying if the words falling out of your mouth didn't make you dizzy at your own confidence. What if Nezuko switched suddenly one day, or Muzan got his dirty paws on her and turned her into a killing machine?

However, having a stranger put their life on the line for a demon is pretty compelling. Besides, you had an excuse if people were confused about why you decided to.

“I suppose you're aware of the letter sent by Urokodaki, then?”

You hum in affirmation, and he nods hesitantly.

“Anything else I need to know of?”

“Nezuko will be attacked and taunted by Sanemi, Nezuko will pass the trial,” you think a little bit more, “Oh and, some of the pillars disagree with your decision to keep Nezuko around outright.”

Kagaya nods again before his brows furrow, “And if they ask why you have decided to make such a bold commitment to a demon you don't personally know? I cannot exactly disclose the fact you know the future yet, you know.”

Your lips purse, “No, I know,” you start, “Just say I witnessed Nezuko's nature to not hurt humans back on the mountain,”

He tilts his head slightly, “Oh? And when was this?"

“Just before Kaname came and gave me your message, I came about this close,” You pinch your fingers before they're just about to touch, “To accidentally beheading Nezuko. She showed no signs of malice, even when I was about to kill her.”

Kagaya nods in understanding. It's a compelling argument to make, and also makes you look less suspicious (and stalkerish).

He sips the tea in a ceramic cup. He must really love tea – you can't really blame him, Amane is great at it. You follow and drink from yours too.

“Then, you are dismissed,” he starts before he abruptly snaps his head to you again, “Ah, forgive me for forgetting. I permit you to perform duties as a funky fledged demon slayer, as well as to continue to train with Giyuu and Kyojuro,”

It's your turn to smile at the man,” “Really?”

He nods and returns the smile, “I will continue to give you Japanese lessons as well.”

You bow to the man. A new, and frankly unusual custom (to you), however it was an effective way to show respect and gratitude, “Thank you! Really!”

“Allow me to give you your first official order as a demon slayer, then.”

You sit up to attention. Another demon in need of slaying already? The adrenaline was already pumping through your veins–

“Please go to the butterfly estate to ensure you have no injuries – and do not leave until you are officially discharged, that is an order.”

Well, that's a lot less action filled than you anticipated.

I couldn't help myself with the cliffhanger last chapter hehe

Chapter 19: [19] No Rank

Notes:

cw for mentions of suicide!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It had been about a day since Mount Nagatumo took place. Aoi had welcomed you into a ward for slayers with less life threatening injuries. Mostly things like broken bones, cuts deep enough to need stitches and in your case, a nasty case of bruised ribs, a concussion and a broken nose.

Aoi says the injuries will likely have no permanent effects, and ordered you to be on an easy schedule for a week or so as to not aggravate your injuries further. It meant no training, and not going to visit Chiyo.

You had asked Aoi whether you could go home and rest there, which was met with a firm ‘no’. Something about needing to keep an eye on you or something.

[Y/N]-san! It seems you're recovering well, I'm glad!” A voice chirps from behind you. You were currently on your way to get a drink of water. Aoi had also said walking around the estate would help with keeping your muscles active, without doing anything too strenuous.

Hello, Kocho-san.” You say, as you face the familiar voice.

“‘Kocho-san'?” she echos, a teasing smile on her face. It looks genuine, you're pleasantly surprised, “My, has that concussion made you forget to drop those formalities? Shinobu is fine!”

You coughed awkwardly at the realisation. Over the months you'd been here, you'd become friends with the woman (as you'd like to think, and it seems you think correctly). As a result, she had insisted on first name basis, it was just a little hard for you drop through habit of being respectful to the woman, given her rank and all.

I'm sorry Shinobu-san, it must've slipped my mind.

The insect pillar nods, before raising an eyebrow, “If you don't mind me asking, are you busy right now?”

You think for a moment. You weren't busy, but what if you were in trouble? Shinobu wasn't just scary, but hard to discern. She decapitated demons with a huge smile on her face for goodness sake!

Oh, no. I was just stretching my legs like Aoi-san recommended. Do you need something?”

Her face turns serious, her smile dropping. You look around to check whether anyone was around.

God, had you actually done something wrong? She didn't look very happy.

During the Hashira meeting yesterday,” she starts. You can already assume where she was going with this.

The master presented a demon that hadn't eaten a human. He also said you personally vouched for her due to her behaviour back on that mountain.

You nod along. You're not stupid, you're very aware of the stigma demons have in the organisation that literally kills them. Not to mention Shinobu's deep rooted hate for them that isn't without reason.

Shinobu-san…” You pick your words carefully, “I know that you might not agree with teaming up with a demon, but I ask you to give her a chance. This could really mean–”

She gestures to you to stop and you immediately pause.

To be honest, I'm not really talking about the demon, I'm talking about you.

You tilt your head at the older woman in confusion. Her eyebrows furrowed as she stared at you.

Jumping to the aid of a demon, to the point you told the master you'd commit suicide if she harms a human is quite an unexpected move. I must say, it's a move that I do not approve of, as your friend.” She straightens her posture, her expression is genuine and earnest, “I cannot control how you feel or what you do, however I ask that you don't put yourself in harm's way for others in such a reckless manner. Especially, when there are other ways to go about the situation at hand.

You nod, before a slight smile creeps onto your face, “Who are you, my mum or something?”

A smile appears on her face too, and she smacks your arm in a scolding manner. You rub the area dramatically, and as she opens her mouth to say something, a scream interrupts the moment.

COME ON! YOU GOTTA ADMIT, THREE MONTHS IS WAYYYYY TO LONG! WAY TO LONG! NOT DOING IT! NOPE! NOT ME!”

The sound of stomping follows and you turn around to look down the hallway you were stood in. Shinobu walks closer to you to get a better look. You nearly laugh at how nosy you probably both looked.

This guy…” A familiar face grumbles. Before she enters the room where the nosy, she acknowledges you both with an exhausted nod.

SHUT UP!” She shouts upon entering.

Do we help her, Shinobu-san?”

You hear the aforementioned pillar hum, and before you can blink she's already making her way towards the door.

I was on my way to this room anyway! Aoi-chan has mentioned that this bunch is particularly rowdy, and also…” she turns around to look at you before motioning for you to follow, “I actually came looking for you, because one of them wanted to see you!”

You would question her, but she already entered the room before you can, so all you can do is follow her inside.

IF YOU CARRY ON SCREAMING, I'LL TIE YOU DOWN AND FORCE TO YOU DRINK IT!

Aoi's voice carries through the air, and you quietly close the door to lessen the sound for slayers who were recovering in other rooms. You doubt that it does little to mask the shouts though.

You! You're the one from the mountain!” A voice says, a tone of familiarity. You recognise it too, and choose to ignore everything else for the time being.

I don't think I ever got your name though, I kept calling you ‘no rank’ whenever anyone asked.” The voice carries on and you face them.

Murata-san,” you greet, a smile graces your features, “I'm glad you're okay.

The older man nods at you, “I'm glad you are too.” He sighs as he rubs the back of his neck, “Seriously though, a final selection on mount Nagatumo of all places, is the master crazy or something?”

Hello there! You are?” A perky voice interrupts, and you worry Murata breaks his neck the way his head snaps to the woman. All sound has ceased, you take note, as everyone focuses on the insect pillar.

KOCHO-SAMA!” He laughs awkwardly, “MY APOLOGIES FOR INTRUDING! I'LL BE GOING NOW! GOODBYE!

Aaaand he's gone.

Shinobu seems unbothered as she turns back around to face the row of beds. There are five people you notice.

Your palms turn clammy. You'd be kidding yourself if you pretended you didn't know who was responsible for the ruckus. When you'd first arrived here, months ago, you'd waited for a moment like this.

But now…

Why does your heart drop and throat tighten at the thought of coming face to face with them? Especially one that you haven't gotten to the best start with?

It’s you!”

Chapter 20: [20] Just Fine

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

You look at your side, and you realise you've been standing at the foot of a bed the entire time. However, the voice isn't one you expected.

Instead, you're met with the man you personally saved back on the mountain. His leg is in a brace, the most intricate you've seen. His forehead is also bandaged, though there is no blood this time. You're glad.

Azumi! Look, it's them!” He shouts and voice from the bed beside him pipes up.

I'm right here, Isamu, you don't need to shout the roof off,” They grumble, “And I'm not blind, I can see them just fine!” You turn your head slightly and see it's the lady he was with. She stares back at you.

[L/N], right? We asked Kocho-san about you when we were on the mountain after you left,” the man starts, “We wanted to thank you for saving us!

The woman beside him nods, “I'm Azumi, and the loud mouth over there is Isamu. No need to use surnames.

You're at a loss for words for a moment, their gratitude makes your cheeks feel warm.

I'm glad you got back safely, Azumi-san, Isamu-san.

Isamu puts the back of his hand on his forehead dramatically, “We seriously nearly died! Talk about a short honeymoon!

ISAMU!”

What!? It's true!

It's private, Isamu. You want me to break your other leg? No? Then shut up!

The two bicker and another voice politely pipes up as they continue.

Excuse me,” your eyes wander to another bed and you swear the blood in your veins turn to ice when you make eye contact with the person standing beside it.

You… you're were the one I saw on Mount Nagatumo, right?

You quickly look around. When did Shinobu leave? At least Aoi was still here (albeit basically tackling a certain thunder user). Could you fit through that window and escape? Why is he getting closer? Can a hole swallow you right now?

Your eyes meet with those stupidly soft red eyes, and you nod hesitantly.

And the master said you vouched for Nezuko.” he added. You can't really tell what he's feeling from the expression, it seems troubled. Maybe he was about to headbutt the living daylights out of you as revenge?

You nod again, and sigh, “I'm sorry about the whole… nearly killing your sister thing.” You pick your nails as a habit. You really did feel terrible, the expression he made as your blade nearly beheaded the one person he had left of his family would surely haunt you forever.

Thank you!” you're caught off guard as the red head bows his head at you.

“Uh… what?”

Thank you for believing in us! We will not let you down, I swear!” he exclaims, you wonder if he could bow any lower.

You awkwardly try and get him to straighten up, “You really don't have to do all of that.

No! I really do! Im sorry for pushing you hard too! I didn't hurt you, did I?

“I nearly killed her, you know? You don't need to worry about that.” You wave your hands in front of you as he finally straightens up. A look of determination takes over his features as he stares at you.

But you didn't, and you were just doing what you thought was right! I forgive you, and I'm sure Nezuko does too,” He looks to the two you were talking to before, “And you saved people, so you're not a bad person. You even saved me and Inosuke, technically!”

You raise your eyebrow at him.

Murata-san had told us about someone who was doing a final selection on the mountain, and how they figured out about the strings.” he beams, “I don't know why you were doing a final selection, but you really did save us back there, too! So really, I'm in your debt!

He must've overheard your (brief) conversation with Murata before he scurried away from Shinobu then.

That's not necessary–”

I insist! Let me know if you need something!

Geez, was he always this earnest? You knew he was nice, but this was crazy.

Let's just say we're even, since I nearly… killed your sister and all.” you negotiated, and he goes quite for a moment, a hand on his chin before he smiles at you again.

Alright!” He suddenly goes eerily quiet, before he bursts to life again, “I'm Kamado Tanjiro, by the way! Just Tanjiro is fine!” He then points to a pig mask on a bed. If you squint, you can make out the silhouette of a human.

That's Hashibira Inosuke, he hasn't spoken since that night due to injury, but I'm sure you'll get to know him soon!” He then points to the still hollering thunder breather.

His wide eyes, hands around his neck in a choking gesture as he wiggles around on the bed like a demented worm. You look on in disbelief as Tanjiro sighs, “And that's Agatsuma Zenitsu. He's a little dramatic, sorry.”

DISGUSTING! I WOULD'VE LET MYSELF BECOME A SPIDER IF I KNEW WHAT TORTURE I WOULD BE MADE TO ENDURE!

WOULD YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH ALREADY!?” Aoi barks in response, “OTHER PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO RECOVER, BUT CAN'T BECAUSE OF YOUR HOLLERING!”

It’s still lively as ever in here, I see! Have you made new friends yet, [Y/N]-san?” The chipper voice you knew all too well says behind you and Tanjiro looks over your shoulder.

Kocho-sama!”

Shinobu-san, you're back.

She waves her hand around, “Yes, yes! The life of a pillar is quite a busy one! [Y/N]-san, the master informed me that your Japanese lessons will resume today. I also recommend some gentle training from here to get back into routine.

You nod and you start getting ready to leave.

Wait! What's your name?” Tanjiro asks as you go to follow Shinobu out of the room. You smile at the slayer.

I'm [L/N] [Y/N], [Y/N] is just fine, though.

He nods happily and says goodbye. You leave the room and see Shinobu waiting for you with a smile.

Making friends the same age is good for you!” she chirps, “Plus, being around Tomioka-san as much as you are can't be good for the soul.

You nearly huff a laugh, but stop yourself. You thought of Giyuu as a friend too.

Speaking of Tomioka-san,” Shinobu starts, she starts to lead you to the front of the estate, “I've sent a crow to tell him and Rengoku-san that you can start training, but nothing strenuous. You will stay here to be monitored for about a week, however the training ground is free for you to use whenever you'd like,

You nod at the woman, “Thanks Shinobu-san, it means a lot,”

The lady smiles at you, a genuine and warm one. You return it.

SECRET ALERT!

> Azumi and Isamu have been married for around two weeks prior to Mount Nagatumo, with the mission being their first since having a permitted break!

Chapter 21: [21] Call Me What You Like

Notes:

There'll be quite a bit of canon divergence in this arc! It'll return to the normal time line eventually :)

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It had been about a week or so since then, and you were back to normal for the most part. Shinobu had told you that you wouldn't need to be watched for much longer, too.

“[L/N]-sama, do you always train this vigorously?” A small girl pipes up as she hands you a cup of water. Was this Kiyo, Sumi or Naho? Was this a bad time to say you couldn't really tell the triplets apart?

It’s quite impressive, don't you think?” Your trainer (torturer) beams. The flame breather had been quite literally beating you up for the past few hours. You think he has a different meaning to ‘nothing to strenuous' than you.

You grimace slightly as you catch sight of patients, slayers and kakushi walking through the courtyard to get where they needed to be. How many people have witnessed you getting your world rocked by this guy?

You look troubled! Are you alright?” Kyojuro asks. He graciously accepts a cup of water too.

You hum quietly, brow furrowing subconsciously “This is harder than anything I've done before.”

It's not like the training you had done prior was easy. Actually, it was quite the opposite, considering how inexperienced and frankly, unfit, you were. However, anyone could run, jump and do a bunch of pushups.

Now, you were being made to completely focus on breathing styles, the training you had taken on prior was now child's play, and used as a warm up.

Not to mention, doing all of it injured, whilst still struggling to communicate sometimes. Though you could understand basically everything, aside from when words or phrases slip your mind and you stare blankly at the person you're talking to until it pops back into your head, your speaking ability was far from perfect. Let alone your writing. Why was writing a whole art form?

Thankfully, you don't really need to write much these days.

Rengoku smiles as he places the cup down, standing up with the wooden sword he used to teach (beat) you with.

Maybe, but you've come very far in a short amount of time! You killed your first demon within three months, it's incredibly impressive and no small feat!” He announces, and you feel the need to shrivel into yourself. He may as well tell the entire world.

His expression suddenly turns serious, “Just because you find it hard doesn't mean you're a failure, it means you're human,” he smiles again, “And you'd make a great tsuguko!”

You raise and eyebrow at how fast he changes his mood.

I wouldn't make a good flame hashira.

I won't let myself become a flame hashira. Kyojuro will stay in that position for the rest of time as long as you can help it.

I used water breathing back on the mountain too. What flame tsuguko uses water breathing?”

The man hums in thought, “I'm not sure!”

Well at least he's honest.

You…” A new voice interrupts your conversation, “a demon killed in only three months, did you say?”

Yes!” Kyojuro affirms, he nods at someone behind you. You gulp down the rest of the water before giving the cup back to the butterfly girl with thanks.

So…”

You go to turn around (albeit a little embarrassed, they heard Kyojuro's speech no doubt). However, you don't even get to face the person before you're basically rugby tackled.

SO STRONG! WILL YOU PROTECT ME!?”

That shrill voice is unmistakable now that it's basically screaming down your ear. Not to mention the subject matter of being ‘protected’.

You look to the flame pillar for help, but you're met with an amused laugh. Now you're definitely not becoming his tsuguko, traitor.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEASE! I BEG OF YOU! I'M GONNA DIE IF I DON’T HAVE A PROTECTOR WITH ME AT ALL TIMES–!”

The weight of the slayer is hurled off your back, and you quickly get to your feet and swivel to face them so you can't be surprised attacked again

Zenitsu, what have I told you about pouncing on people! They definitely won't protect you if you do that!”

SHUT UP TANJIRO! YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND MY CONCERNS AT ALL! YOU CARRY YOUR PROTECTOR AROUND IN A BOX FOR GOODNESS SAKE!

Nezuko isn't my protector, she's my sister, thank you very much,” Tanjiro bellows, the thunder users collar still in hand, and Zenitsu immediately shrinks back.

You're so right Tanjiro!” he chuckles nervously, “I'm very sorry!”

I'm sorry about him, he's kind of weird like that,” the red head starts and he finally looks at you, “[L/N]-san! You're looking well!

Thank you, Kamado-san, you do too. I'm glad you're recovering well.” you smile.

Zentisu, who has finally released himself from Tanjiro's grip, snaps his head between you and the other.

“‘Looking well'?” He sneers at Tanjiro before grabbing him by the shoulders and shaking him, “YOU CHEATER! HOW DO YOU ALWAYS BEAT ME TO IT!?”

[L/N]-san literally came to our room! It's not my fault you were to busy complaining about taking medicine!”

IMPOSSIBLE! THERE'S NO WAY I WOULD MISS SOMEONE SO STRONG COMING INTO OUR ROOM! YOU LIAR!”

The two continue to bicker as Kyojuro comes to stand beside you, probably to have a better view of the amusing argument.

Are they your friends?” He asks, “That boy is the one with the demon sister, right?”

You purse your lips, “Friends is a little far fetched, I've only spoken to Kamado-san once after I defended his sister.” Kyojuro nods in understanding, “That one though…” You look at Zenitsu who was now aggressively choking Tanjiro with eyes as big as saucers, “I've never met.”

The yellow haired boy immediately stops. He must've heard your conversation with his scarily good hearing.

He immediately releases Taniro and starts giggling like a weirdo. He starts sauntering over to you with a goofy smile.

I'd be happy to meet you! I'm Agatsuma Zenitsu, but you can call me whatever you'd like!”

Before he can get too close to comfort, he's tugged away again.

Zenitsu, that's a hashira!” Tanjiro gasps slightly. He must've only just noticed Kyojuro standing there with his arms crossed.

Zenitsu raises an eyebrow, “Yeah right! Why would I believe you? Are you making things up to foil my plans again!?”

Tanjiro points at the fiery man, who wore a big smile like usual. He seemed amused by the whole thing.

I swear Zenitsu, that's one of the hashira. The strongest slayers in the corps!”

DID SOMEONE SAY STRONG!?”

Chapter Text

You now knew how to summon Insouke, you need only mutter the word ‘strong’ or any synonyms and he'll come barreling towards you, head ready to smack you.

‘You’ being Zenitsu.

You watch as the pig head smashes into Zenitsu, who unceremoniously falls to the ground with a yelp. Tanjiro does nothing except watch with a disappointed face. He doesn't look surprised.

Kyojuro laughs, “Is it normal for youngsters to be so odd these days? You fit right in, [Y/N]!

You side eye the flame pillar, “You're not exactly normal either, Rengoku-san. You're not so old either, y'know.” He laughs heartily in response.

I'm sorry if this is too personal of me to ask but…” Tanjiro starts, “How do you know each other?

Rengoku-san is one of my trainers,” You explain, “I'm also trained by Tomioka-san, and sometimes both of neither have a mission.”

Tomioka-san! As in the water hashira?”

You nod in response.

Wow! Being trained by two hashira is super cool!” He exclaims, you can imagine the sparkles appearing around him as he looks at the man in awe. He seems to feel no negative feelings towards Kyojuro despite his disagreements with his sister.

CAW! RENGOKU-SAMA, HEAD TO MISSION IMMEDIATELY! MISSION IMMEDIATELY, CAW!” Kaname swoops down and circles around everyone, Kyojuro immediately picks up his real sword.

Good job training today!” he pats your head, “Take the day off, Tomioka-san is also currently on a mission and won't be back until morning!

And like that, he disappears. You can make out his crow in the distant sky.

HAAAAAH!? SO FAST! WHERE'D HE GO!? WHERE!? WHEREEEE!?” Inosuke grumbles, Zenitsu still on the ground with his head in his hands.

YOU!” The boar suddenly points at you and you mirror the action of pointing at yourself.

Me?

YES, YOU! YOU CUT THAT TWELVE KIZUKI! FIGHT ME RIGHT NOW!

Didn't Tomioka-san tell you it wasn't a twelve kizuki?

WHO IS LOMIPOKA PAN?! IS HE FIGHTABLE?!

You fight the urge to laugh at the ridiculous mispronunciation, but the boar might take it as a signal to fight.

Wait, are you the one who saved you, Inosuke?” Tanjiro asks, Inosuke crosses his arms stubbornly.

SAVE!? I DIDN'T NEED SAVING, THEY JUST CUT IT'S ARM OFF WHILE IT CRUSHED ME!

That's called saving you, you dumb boar!” Zenitsu pipes up, before being kicked square in the face by said dumb boar.

SHUT UP!

So it was you!” Tanjiro beams. Is that what being blinded by the sun feels like, “Inosuke kept saying he needed to find ‘bird haori’ and ‘half and half haori' in his sleep to fight them since they ‘proved their worth’. Being fought by Inosuke is high praise!

He suddenly bows, and you feel awkward again.

Thanks very much! If it wasn't for you, Inosuke probably would've gotten more injured than he is now!

There's really no need for that, Kamado-san.

He smiles as he gets back up, before he frowns again. You raise an eyebrow.

Back before we were taken down the mountain, a crow came down and said something.” He starts, you listen.

Has he figured you out or something? Did he smell that you weren't from here time wise? UNIVERSE wise?

My memories are a little fuzzy, but it said something about a final selection?

You fight the need to bite your nails.

Oh yeah, I was doing my final selection on Mount Nagatumo.” you say, “Per the master's orders.

The boy's mouth goes slack.

Really? Mount Nagatumo?

You nod hesitantly. He was acting a little weird.

I'm sorry, I'm just a little surprised.” he adds, "Zenitsu said something about killing a demon within three months, so I assumed you were there with someone for safety.

He knots his brow, “Wasn't it a little reckless for the master to send you to Mount Nagatumo when lower five was there?” He asks no one in particular.

I'm still asking myself the same question.” an all too familiar voice says. You look down.

Notes:

SECRET ALERT!

> Inosuke doesn't remember much from Mount Nagatumo, especially details – which is why he still refers to the father demon and a twelve kizuki despite being told it's not.

Chapter 23: [23] Nerve

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

“I'll tell ya what, KID,” A bitter voice, in perfect English sputters, “You've got some NERVE!”

Why is the ground approaching your face?

[L/N]-san! Are you okay?” The red head exclaims as you face the plant. You hear him approach – probably to help you up or make sure you hadn't hit your head too hard.  Though you wish the ground would swallow you whole. How could she have swept your legs out from underneath you so fast with those frail limbs of hers?

“Another brat to deal with!?” Chiyo suddenly turns to the boy with an accusing finger, “You want some too? I've got A LOT to hand out, especially right NOW!

The old woman smacks her elbow, before jumping on you with the bone landing in the centre of your spine. Since when was she a wrestler too!?

“Chiyo!” You choke out, the old woman is surprisingly heavy, though her assault on your back probably wasn't helping, “Get off! You're crushing me!”

The woman in question starts to cackle, pushing down harder.

WHO THE HELL IS THAT!? WHY ARE THEY HAVING A BRAWL!? WITHOUT INVITING ME?! LET ME–” The boar headed slayer is immediately yanked back by his patient uniform. A trembling Zenitsu holds him in front of himself as a sort of shield.

THEY'RE GETTING ATTACKED BY A RABID ANIMAL THAT SPEAKS ANCIENT TONGUES! OR IS IT A DEMON?! EITHER WAY, PROTECT ME, STUPID BOAR!

The ‘stupid boar’ immediately lunges at Zenitsu in retaliation.

Who are you? Why are you attacking [L/N]-san? Please get off of them, you might injure them!”

Oh please!” Chiyo scoffs, before stomping herself off of you. You immediately stand up, dusting off your uniform – you make sure to keep the hag in your sights.

They should've been paying attention! What if I was a demon?” she places her bony hands on her hips in a sassy display.

Tanjiro looks speechless, Inosuke and Zenitsu seem to be breathless after a quick brawl of their own.

“YOU!” She suddenly points at you again and you fight the urge to roll your eyes at her screech.

“Yes?” You deadpan.

“DON’T ‘yes’ ME! WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN!? NO NOTE! NO CROW! NO SIGN! I THOUGHT YOU'D BEEN SNATCHED UP ON THAT MOUNTAIN! THANK GOD KYOJURO HAS A BIG MOUTH, OTHERWISE I NEVER WOULD'VE FOUND OUT YOU'D RETURNED!”

You stare at the woman in disbelief.

Sorry, but what are you saying?” Tanjiro asks, albeit shakily. He's probably scared he'll get jumped.

I think it's better to let them be, Tanjiro.” Zenitsu whispers, “That old, creepy bag of bones is seriously freaking me out with her banshee shrieks and weird language.

I HEARD THAT YOU LITTLE–”

“Chiyo!” You move your body to cover the trio, hands outstretched, “Look, I get you were worried, and that you're mad, but that doesn't mean you can jump on people.”

“ME!? WORRIED?!” she huffs a laugh, “NOPE! NEVER! I WAS JUST… WONDERING WHERE MY SWORD WAS! THAT THING WAS–”

“Made by your husband yeah yeah, I know,” you sigh, “Shinobu said I can go back to the estate today anyway.”

Chiyo sneers at you, before pointing her nose to the sky, “Fine! I guess it'd be… okay with you there!”

You nod, ignoring how suspicious she sounds.

“I'll meet you there, I need to get everything together.”

Chiyo makes a sound akin to a growl, before turning away and disappearing.

What the HELL WAS THAT!? WHY ARE YOU FLUENT IN THAT WITCHES WORDS!? ARE YOU CURSED!? ARE YOU GONNA CURSE ME!? OH NO! SOMEONE, SAVE ME!

Curse..? Witch…?” You echo, and the blonde nods erratically, What do those words mean?

You don't think you've ever seen someone look so gobsmacked before.

‘WHAT DO THOSE WORDS MEAN?!’” Zenitsu repeats, before he abruptly grabs your shoulders, “YOU MEAN YOU'RE NOT FLUENT IN JAPANESE?!"

You look off to the side awkwardly, your face burns. He's really close.

I mean, I can get around just fine,” you explain, I've just never been taught, or heard those words before.

oh goodness gracious…” The thunder user pulls back, hand clutching his chest dramatically, “WHAT KIND OF GENTLEMAN AM I!? HOW RUDE OF ME!”

before you can blink, he's down on one knee in front of you.

I” his voice drops octaves, “can teach you the way of Japanese, if you'd be so inclined.

An awkward silence engulfs the area. Was he trying to sound like some kind of prince or something? What was with the serious voice and intense stare?

I think I'll pass, thanks.

WHAAAAT!? I THOUGHT I WAS BEING CHARMING! TANJIRO, AM I BEING CHARMING!?

If you were in the woods, you'd be dead by now, Anitbu.

ANITBU!? WHO THE HELL IS ‘ANITBU’!? MY NAME IS ZENITSU! HEAR THAT, STUPID BOAR!? ZEN-IT-SUUUUUUUU! AND WHAT'S WITH THE OMINOUS THREATS– AH!”

Insouke then proceeds to rugby tackle Zenitsu once again.

So, who is your teacher, [L/N]-san?” Tanjiro pipes up, ignoring the two squabbling next to him.

You hum, “My teacher is the master himself.”

The red head's mouth goes slack, “Really? That's amazing!” He puts his hand to his chin thought, “Sorry if this is rude but, you do have an unconventional way of speaking. I wasn't sure if it was just a speaking quirk, but now that I know it's a second language, it makes sense!

Unconventional?”

Yes! Unconventional!

That sure was a big word he was spilling. The hell does that mean?

Oh! Uh… like, different from what people would regularly speak.

You nod in understanding, and ‘o’ present on your expression.

You almost jump when Tanjiro suddenly jolts, eyes wide.

Not that it's weird or anything! I mean, I guess it's different, but you speak similarly to the master, now that you've said it, is all! Very formal! Yes, that's right, formal!” he blabbering, and you smile.

It's okay, Kamado-san, I take no offence.”

Like that!” he points, “‘I take no offence,” he repeats, you make out an accent. Maybe it's the equivalent of imitating 'prim and proper' English?

It's very formal! Like how a noble would speak, when you speak with friends, you'd say something more like, ‘I'm not offended’!”

You hum, “Then, I'm not offended, Kamado-san.

Tanjiro smiles, before he's shoved aside.  A giggly Zenitsu wobbles forward.

I have something I can teach you!” he beams, “Repeat after me, ‘I want to marry Zenitsu.’

“...marry?”

Absolutely not, do not repeat that, [L/N]-san! Zenitsu, you need to stop being a creep!

Chapter 24: [24] Nagasawa-sama

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

You had gone back to the ward you had slept in, changing into your now freshly washed uniform. As you shrug the haori Chiyo gave you onto your shoulders, you thank whoever may be looking down on you that the demon blood had evaporated, or at the very least, out of the fabric.

As you pass the trip's room, you suddenly have a thought, and before you can stop yourself, you're entering into the ward.

Asumi and Isamu are not there. You'd heard from Tanjiro they were currently bouncing between surgery and rehabilitation, and so they were often not in the ward.

A giggle interrupts your thoughts, “You came back for me, Y/N! I knew you would!” Zenitsu sighs wistfully and you fight the urge to curl your lips in disgust.

Agatsuma-san, Kamado-san, Hashibira-san, would you like to come to my estate and have some tea?”

So now, here you were, in front of the estate. YOUR estate.

The wisteria in full bloom, the purple petals dancing in the wind. The estate itself was surrounded by wisteria trees to ward off demons (and it looked pretty). Chiyo had said they had another meaning, but when you asked what that meaning was, she shrugged you off and acted like she said nothing.

There were also plenty of water features, a waterfall here, a pond there. You had also asked why there were so many surrounding the grounds, Chiyo had explained that they were helpful with training from when she was a water pillar. You were unconvinced, because what was she using a pond for training wise? Giyuu had admittedly dumped you under the waterfall several times, but never the shallow ponds, or the fountains.

Again, she brushed you off with a roll of her eyes and a, “they just look NICE. Do you have a problem?”.

It seemed the woman really liked the aesthetics and decorations back in the day, and spared no expense, that was for sure.

The house itself was large, a mix of purple, red and black with the odd dash of gold. The scent of wood was always pleasant.

WHAT IS THAT!?” Inosuke barks, before pointing at a statue of a fox. It towers over all of you, eyes closed serenely with a bushy tail coiled around its torso. There were several planted around the grounds, all well maintained, as well as others animals. You can recall the stone heron standing in one of the ponds by itself – it reminds you of Chiyo's haori.

Again, you had asked Chiyo about the foxes (and other animals on separate occasions, maybe she just really liked animals?)  and their purpose outside of looks. She had explained that foxes were spiritual animals, and were a sign of good luck and protection. They also helped the dead in the afterlife.

You weren't sure if any of that was true, but you had caught sight of real life foxes playing around in the tall grass and shrubs. They made you smile, though their cries at night were a little annoying. It made you feel like you were living in a fairytale, the fact that this was all in YOUR backyard (and front yard, you guess.) You owned the estate after all.

That's a… fox?” you trail off, unsure what he wanted to hear. The guy lived up in a mountain with pigs for goodness sake, surely he'd seen a fox before?

I KNOW THAT!” He snaps, before he crosses his arms, “WHY'S IT SO… SO BIG?!”

You hum, tilting your head slightly upwards to make eye contact with the fox statue. You wonder how you would react if a seven foot something fox came bounding towards you.

It looks cool?”

Inosuke jolts, “‘cool,” he says, “ONLY LORD INOSUKE OF THE MOUNTAINS CAN BE ‘COOL’! I NEEDA FIGHT THIS THING TO SETTLE IT ONCE AND FOR ALL!

The boar headed boy is grabbed from the back again, an exhausted looking Tanjiro looks up at the fox too, before observing his surroundings. The box on his back probably doesn't help, either.

Are you rich or something?” Zenitsu asks, he looks up at the house that peaks through the wisteria.

No,” you affirm, “that old hag who floored me yesterday gave it to me when I arrived.”

Zenitsu raises his eyebrow in confusion. You're surprised he hasn't kicked up a fuss. Though his calm demeanor is a welcome change.

Man, what's with old people being crazy?” he asks, though it feels like it's not aimed at you in particular, “Gramps was off his head too, he didn't give me an entire estate though.

The thunder user deflates, and you nearly pat his shoulder, however you pull away. You can't remember how fresh the loss of his master was, and whether he even wanted comfort.

Give is a generous word, actually,” you muse, “it was more thrust upon me. It’s the nicest home I've lived in though, that's for sure

Zenitsu nods in understanding and a smile plays on his lips.

You finally make your way to the front doors. Heavy and wooden, you push it open. Chiyo had left it unlocked, just as she said she would before she left. You hear the clamouring of pots and cups in the kitchen.

“Kid, you're ba–AH! MORE KIDS!” Chiyo shrieks, she almost drops a bowl she was drying off, but catches it before it smashes into the ground.

“Sorry, Chiyo” You apologise, closing the door shut behind you. The trio awkwardly loiters in the open room.

I invited them over for tea, can you make us some please?

The old woman sneers, crossing her arms, bowl and towel in each arm.

“Do I look like a servant to you?”

“Well, you are the kakushi assigned to this estate... so yes?”

“WHY, YOU–”

“Pretty please, Chiyo… you make the best tea in the whole entire world,” you clasp your hands together, and summon your strongest pair of puppy eyes you could muster.

The ex-pillar knots her brows before shaking her head erratically.

“Fine! FINE! You win, put those googly eyes away before they pop out or somethin'” She turns around and heads back into the kitchen, “You kids go make yourselves comfy, and I'll bring it over to ya.

“Thanks, Chiyo!” You smile, though they can't see it, “Come on, let's go sit.

You usher the boys into a more comfortable room, a low table and cushions strewn about along with a bunch of other decorations Chiyo no doubt splurged on back in her youth.

This place is beautiful, [L/N]-san!” Tanjiro chirps and he kneels around the table, Inosuke and Zenitsu follow, and so do you.

You nod in thanks, “You should tell Chiyo, she'll probably refrain from screeching at you if you suck up to her.

“I HEARD THAT!” A distant yell from the kitchen, you bite down your laugh, deciding not to tell the trio what she had said.

THE WALLS ARE UGLY!” Inosuke growls, pointing at an intricately painted canvas. It's a massive heron of ink, wings splayed out in flight as water swirled around it.

Was Chiyo a heron wearing a human suit?

You kids should watch yourselves,” the aforementioned woman, now standing in the room with a tray in hand glowers, “I'd hate for something… bad and… unexpected to happen to any of you.

She places the tray down harshly, and you catch Zenitsu nearly jumping out of his skin. He was really scared of this woman, you couldn't blame him, the only reason you were so unbothered was the fact you had become desensitised from living with her.

Thank you for the tea, Nagasawa-sama!” Tanjiro announces as he scoops up a cup.

Chiyo raises an amused eyebrow, “Nagasawa-sama, eh?” she laughs, I like you, kid! You're spared!

Of course! You are a former hashira, and deserve respect!” He says.

Was he actually sucking up to the hag, or was he seriously that nice?

HASHIRA!?” Inosuke exclaims, he must recall the title from his run in with Giyuu. He looks the woman up and down, “YOU'D BE DEAD ON MY MOUNTAIN THE SECOND YOU STEP ON IT WITH HOW SKINNY YOU ARE!

YOU THINK I'M GONNA LISTEN TO PIG HEADED FREAK!? CHECK YOURSELF, YOU INSOLENT DIMWIT!” Chiyo shouts back, and you cringe at the volume as they have a borderline screaming match.

This tea is really tasty!”

And there goes Tanjiro, diffusing the situation and Chiyo thanks him for his manners with a kind smile. You know the darkness she holds underneath.

CAW! TOMIOKA-SAMA WILL BE ARRIVING SOON! TOMIOKA-SAMA WILL NE HERE SOON, CAW!” An all to familiar (elderly) crow squawks from a window he has perched himself on.

Tomioka-san?” you ask no one in particular. Kyojuro had told you he'd be arriving tomorrow morning and to take the day off, not right NOW.

GET OFF THE WINDOW, YOU OLD BIRD!” Chiyo shoos the crow off before opening the window to let it in. It flies down and lands on the ground in front of you. Maybe he was making a wrong announcement again? You remember being told he didn't have a great memory due to his age.

CAW! TOMIOKA-SAMA IS ARRIVING SOON! TOMIOKA-SAMA IS ARRIVING EARLY! CAW!

Yeah, yeah! We get it!” Chiyo hollers.

Would you like us to leave?” Tanjiro asks and you knot your brow together.

No, it's alright. You've only just gotten here, and he probably won't even train me today,” you reply.

Chapter 25: [25] I'll show you

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

He had indeed come to train you like normal.

Except now, you had an audience of your beat down, how lovely!

Get up.

And that dumb, stupid monotonous voice that had seriously started to grind your gears and sound like chalk on a blackboard.

You get up, the dummy (but real) sword in hand, the water hashira gripped one too, except his was still wooden.

If I was a demon, you'd be dead ten times over by now.

You heave air into your lungs, the muscles in your arms had started to feel like they were going to self-destruct. Not to mention the bruises on your torso you could feel forming.

Yeah, yeah, you've told me that a million times,” you sigh, “don't you think you're going a little too hard on me? I've only just been released from the hospital–”

Show me your breathing forms, now.” he says, now stepping aside to reveal a dummy made of flour sacks and sand. Where the hell did he get this endless stream of dummies!?

Okay…” you sneer, getting into position.

It takes around forty minutes of constant scrutiny, as well as another four hours of hard japs and slaps (and maybe some push ups and running laps as punishment thrown in there to make your life harder) before Giyuu even allows you to take a sip of water.

His whole thing is being a water guy, why had he deprived you so much??

[L/N]-san, you look a little… tired,” Tanjiro points out the obvious. Zenitsu looks on with a look that looks worried, but also happy that it wasn't him in your position.

Chiyo had been keeping Inosuke busy with odd jobs like polishing the wooden floors and tending to the flowers with a little bit of ‘I could do it better than you’ magic. You take note the pig headed slayer seemed to like the flowers the most, oddly enough.

Thanks Kamado-san,” you guzzle the water down, “I never would've noticed if you didn't point it out.

Was it a little mean? Maybe, but he wasn't the one drenched in sweat and bruises as a crazed old woman laughed in their ear.

“I don't think I've seen you look as terrible as you do right now, kid!” she howls, “I never realised how easy that Kyojuro kid took it on you!”

Easy? What felt easy was giving into the temptation of punching the elderly right now.

You did okay,” you look up, the water pillar in all of his nonchalant glory compliments (kind of), “You still need to work on your reaction time and strength, though.

You nod absentently, before your eyebrows furrow, “how do I do that?

Giyuu starts walking to the courtyard again and you nearly keel over and cry. Was this a humiliation ritual?

You can do it, [L/N]-san!” The red head cheers.

Tanjiro's right, and then you'll be my incredibly talented protector riiiiight?” Zenitsu giggles, wiggling his shoulders like a school girl in love – if he was laying down, hope would be kicking his feet you think.

You hesitantly get up and meet the dark haired man. He's no longer holding a sword, and motions for you to drop your own, which you obey.

The easiest way to deal with imperfections like yours is to use repetition.” he states, you raise an eyebrow. Was imperfections the best word he could use?

To put it simply, I'm going to train the imperfections out of you until it’s ingrained in your mind,” Giyuu shifts his weight, “We'll focus on your reaction time first.

Before you can blink, the man is in front of you and you're pushed to the ground a few feet away, small rocks and dust getting into your eyes making them burn. What the hell kind of method is this? You're now convinced this is literally just bullying.

You wobble to your feet, and he's coming at you again, except this time he disappears and you feel a weight on your back. He's stepping on your back, pinning your body to the ground. Was he heavy, or was he seriously that strong that you couldn't stand up no matter how much you writhe?

You don't have the strength to push me off,” he starts, “however, strength isn't everything in battle – take Kocho-san as an example, she uses her speed and agility to make up for her lack of strength.”

He finally steps off and starts moving to the middle again.

Use everything you have instead of focusing on the things you don't,” he shifts again once you've made it there too, "You'll always wish you were stronger, or faster, or smarter when you're in battle – but you cannot change it then, so change it now.”

He disappears again, what's with him and his TED talks??

You feel a breeze at your side and you turn your head to meet those dead blue eyes. You don't get to do anything but yelp as he kicks the back of your knee and you crumble to the floor in defeat.

The best strategy for you would be to never allow your opponents to pin you down. Whilst no one really wants to be downed, some people can fight their way back up through brute force – but you…” he frowns, “can't even escape a grip of a slayer, what will you do when a high ranked demon that can regenerate and never gets tired has its claws on you? Not to mention it will have every intention to kill you, and will likely stop at nothing to do so.”

You fight the urge to look up at the patio. It’s silent except for your heavy breathing, you can't tell if it's because they're all watching you get utterly decimated, or whether it's because your senses have honed in on the water pillar making harsh (but true) criticisms.

You get up again when Giyuu moves to walk to the middle again. He swivels around when he meets the centre and states through your soul.

How did you survive on that mountain, [Y/N]?

Excuse me?” You exclaim. He'd always used honorifics with you – maybe he was just polite by nature and wasn't a huge fan of getting polite too fast, but right now, as he stared down at you from across the training ground, it was anything but friendly.

Maybe not terribly evil, but it made your blood turn cold. Did he no longer believe in you or something? He seemed pretty confident when he saw you off on the mission, and didn't seem particularly worried when you saw him on the mountain itself.

You can hardly stand your ground right now,” he says, “How did you survive on that mountain, [Y/N]?” He repeats. He sounds dead serious.

You feel your jaw tense as Chiyo pipes up, “Maybe we should take a break? A tea break sounds nice right now, doesn't it? Right Tanjiro, Zenitsu? Weird pig boy?

The old woman laughs awkwardly, Tanjiro and Zenitsu nod their heads erratically in agreement as Inosuke continues to furiously sweep the ground. You shake your head.

No,” you sneer, “If you wanna know so badly, Tomioka-san, I'll show you.” You exhale.

You catch the way he steps a leg back and brace yourself. He has an indifferent expression that ticks you off. Who does he think he is?

Good.”

Chapter 26: [26] No Surprise

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

As soon as the water pillar disappears in a blur, you focus everything onto your surroundings, and when the slightest sound of footsteps catch your attention from behind, you immediately turn to face him before side stepping to avoid a hand coming to chop down onto your neck. A dirty move – he wasn't only trying to floor you, that blow would've knocked you out cold had you not dodged at the very last second.

You scramble to catch yourself footing, the momentum from side stepping nearly taking you down. However, Giyuu is unrelenting – it's easy to see why he's a pillar and leaving you in the dust skill wise.

He disappears again, you wonder if he's trying even just a little bit.

The gravel moving underneath wooden sandals catches your attention and you turn to the sound, only to see nothing there. You can hardly form a thought before you're on your stomach, wind knocked out of your lungs, face covered in dust and a heavy weight on your spine.

He must've made that sound on purpose. Giyuu isn't small by any means – taller than the average man, and built of pure muscle – however he's incredibly light on his feet. Just moments ago, he had avoided your line of sight without so much as a peep. So why else would he make a sound aside from catching you off guard and taking a victory?

Your thoughts are cut off as the said man sighs, and the weight on your spine is gently lifted. You struggle to catch your breath regardless, the fall had well and truly winded you.

We'll stop here,” he starts, “and work on this more another time.

And he's gone with the wind, and you're left to mull over the defeat pathetically on the dusty ground. What kind of teacher leaves their student in such a sorry state? Not even some words of encouragement?

You let your face fall back into the earth lazily, usually you would cringe at the thought of inhaling the dust – however frustration and exhaustion took hold. You fight the urge to claw at the ground like a feral animal – you thought you were better than this. You were better than this, surely? You had killed that demon! Now you couldn't even stand on your own two legs without looking like a moron.

“That kid better pray I never get hold of him,” the old woman you oh so loathe (but love) pipes up. She had made her way over to you, a cloth in one hand.

“Not now, Chiyo.” you mumble, “”Please.” You swallow at the cracks in your voice. Were you always this sensitive?

“Now, now,” she tuts, “no need to cry,”

Her words sound scolding, but her tone is surprisingly gentle as she grips your upper arm and hoists you up. You nearly splutter at the strength this stick of a woman had as the world turns up right again, and you're no longer facing the floor – feet firmly planted on the ground.

“It’s okay,” her hand tightens, “Set backs are part of the process.”

“I told the boys to go and wait in the house,” she says as she leads you towards the terrace, ”I figured you wouldn't want them to see.”

She doesn't expand on her reasoning any further as she makes you sit down on the now polished wood. Inosuke had done an impressive job.

You didn't even know Chiyo had gotten a bucket of fresh water until you feel something cold and wet rub against your cheek.

“What are you doing?” You say. It was a stupid question.

“What does it look like? Surely the water kid hasn't made you go blind, has he?” she teases softly as she continues, “No student of mine will have a muddied face, it would be an insult to my legacy and prowess!”

You feel a laugh bubble in your throat, but it comes out strained. You had never felt this defeated before, even when you got your ass handed to you every other day before becoming a demon slayer. No, this was a different feeling.

Chiyo's expression becomes serious, her cleaning turns to your bloodied hands. You hope she doesn't notice their trembling, but you're sure she does even though she says nothing about it.

“Look kid, I get you have a whole bunch of stuff going on,” she exclaims, a small sigh escaping her lips, “but ya won't save anyone if you burn yourself up and into the ground before you even get the chance.”

“You… how did you know that?””

“Know what? The whole saviour thing? The kid told me, obviously.”

You raise an eyebrow, Chiyo called every human on earth ‘kid’, so it wasn't exactly helpful. You feel a sting on your wrist and wince – you must've scraped yourself royally – the water Chiyo is using has turned into a muddy red.

“Kagaya,” she clarifies, “Can't say I blame ya, since you've seen everything that's gonna happen – it's no surprise ya wanna try and change it.”

“I never said I wanted to change it.” you furrow your brow at the woman and she hums.

“Sure ya haven't, but Kagaya isn't as blind as ya take him for, and I ain't stupid either, kid,” she presses harder on a cut and you grit your teeth, “It's a noble pursuit, and not everyone woulda done the same thing – lotsa people woulda made off to someplace safe and pretended to be none the wiser.”

“I, or should I say we, can put two and two together,” she huffs, “we ain't naive enough to think this whole demon slaying business is gonna stay sunshine and rainbows – hell, there's probably a buncha young sprouts like ya having their bones munched on by some demon right now.”

The image is visceral and pessimistic, but she's right, and you know it.

“People are gonna die, and you know who,” Chiyo states, “And you don't wanna let it happen, I'd be a hypocrite if I'd say I wouldn't do the same if I knew what you knew.”

She finally releases your arm before picking your cheek, and hard.

“but sometimes ya gotta put yourself first, and that ain't a crime – even though you seem to avoid it like it is one,” she squeezes again and you groan, “so now that water kids gone, and the sun is settin’ you can focus on yourself, even if it's just for tonight! Got it?”

“Chiyo–”

“Got it?” she glowers and you side eye the old woman in slight fear.

“Got it.”

“Great!” she beams as she gets up, you follow, “I'll make you and the boys a treat then, you go and do whatever kids nowadays do or whatever!”

You feel a small smile form as you make your way back into the estate.

Chapter 27: [27] Decorum

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The evening passes by quickly after that, and with enough of Chiyo fussing, she’s able to coax the trio into staying over at your estate.

WHAT KIND OF EVIL BEING DO YOU TAKE ME FOR!? LEAVIN’ YOU KIDS TO WALK BACK IN THE PITCH BLACK! I’LL PREPARE SOME BEDS!

Nagasawa-sama, that really won’t be neces-”

I said, I'll go and prepare some beds.

DON’T TEMPT HER TANJIRO, SHE LOOKS LIKE SHE MIGHT ATTACK YOU!

And when the moon falls, and dawn finally rears its head, so does a flurry of wild barks.

You furrow your brow, you don’t recall ever seeing a dog. Maybe it’s so early, you’re hearing things? Or did Inosuke start to act out being a dog to assert dominance or something?

Your thoughts are interrupted by more barking, and you heave a sigh. As you begin to leave your futon, you catch a glimpse at the boys who had been coaxed into staying over - all out cold, including Inosuke - meaning he wasn’t the one making that annoying noise. That being said, they must’ve been super tired as to not be woken up, especially Zenitsu.

As you make your way to the front door, the barking gets even louder. Chiyo must’ve gone home at some point during the night, as you can only imagine her screeching to get the creature to shut up if she was here.

The door slides open, and the barking immediately stops - instead you feel a pair of fluffy paws on your chest and soft, excited pants coming from the beast. You nearly lose your balance as it jumps up.

“Hey!” You exclaim, but immediately shut your mouth to avoid waking the trio in the other room, “Where’s your owner litt- uh, big buddy?

True to your words, the dog wasn’t little in any regard. Whether that be it’s size or comical amount of hair. Rather, it looked like a giant cloud with fluffy legs and beady eyes.

It lets out another bark in response, and finally lets up on its assault. Instead, it opts to sit down diligently with a dangerously cute tilt of its head and an enthusiastic wag of its tail. Only then do you notice a case attached to its collar - one you could fit a rolled up piece of paper in.

Maybe this was the demon slayer universe’s equivalent to having a phone number on their pet’s collar for if and when they got lost?

You inwardly shrug as you open the small compartment, and just as you hypothesised, a small roll of paper with your worst nightmare - Japanese characters.

You could read a little if you really used your head, however it made you want to jump headfirst into a brick wall most of the time.

However, what catches your attention the most is the familiarly graceful signature at the bottom, and you quirk an eyebrow.

“Kagaya’s signature? Did you escape from his estate or something? I’ve never taken him for a dog person…”

Another bark, as if to say “read it!”, and you roll your eyes, before looking over the paper again.

Kagaya very rarely, if at all, signed his name in English - why would he? He lives in Japan for god’s sake! So you have a sneaky suspicion that this was intentional, and by the way the dog looks at you, your suspicion turns more into confirmation.

Abandoned…? I think that's what that says… Did Kagaya abandon you?

It barks again.

That’s a nope.

NoNo what? I dunno what that says… skills… Since when was that a character?…demongood… let me think, luck?”

What the hell? Did Kagaya suffer a stroke whilst writing this or something? You try and decipher what is written over and over again, until you see in tiny writing underneath the signature,

‘come back alive’

Has the master resorted to leaving cryptic and ominous messages to you now? Is it because you complained 99% of the time during your lessons?

Abandoned.

Demon .

Good luck

Come back alive.

Is this… a mission?”

The dog in front of you basically launches itself at you and you fall onto your back unceremoniously - you cringe at the loud thud it creates. It doesn’t help that it starts barking manically either.

UWAAAH! [Y/N] IS BEING ATTACKED BY A DEMONIC BEAST! TANJIRO GO HELP THEM!

You didn’t even realise the door to your room had been slid open before you snap your head away from the slobbering mess that is the cloud currently on top of you and onto the trio. The difference in reactions would’ve likely of made you laugh had you not be in the middle of being attacked.

That’s a dog, Zenitsu! And why don’t you help them!?”

I’M GONNA FIGH-

STOP RIGHT THERE!” A familiar, gravelly voice booms, “DO KIDS THESE DAYS, KNOW ABOUT DECORUM!? AND YOU, MANGEY MUTT, GET OFF OF MY STUDENT!

The dog gets off of you finally, and you can breathe fresh air without receiving a mouthful of white hair.

Nagasawa-sama!

OLD WITCH!"

“Chiyo!”

The woman starts going on some kind of rant, before you shove the letter in front of her.

“OI! WHAT DID I JUST SAY ABOUT DECORUM!”

“Chiyo, does this letter say to go on a mission?”

The woman grabs the paper, and reads through it, before huffing a “yes”

“HANG ON A MINUTE, A MISSION!?”

Chapter Text

You don’t even get time to react before Chiyo practically drags you into the estate, a comical (But kind of scary) shadow obscuring her face. Eyebrows angled angrily and the biggest frown one could muster.

N-nagasawa-sama, are you okay?” Tanjiro cautiously prods at the old woman, whose eye twitches in response.

A mission alreadyI'm gonna kill the one you all call master.

YOU’RE A MURDERER!?”

MISSION!?”

Mission?”

“Chiyo, you’re gonna break my arm.” The old woman moves her head at break neck speed to turn to you. You feel a squeak of terror threaten to claw it’s way out of you throat, but you swallow it.

“Not now, I needa plot.”

[L/N]-san, you have a mission?” Tanjiro asks, and you nod in affirmation, “Where?

You shrug before smoothly grabbing the paper from the preoccupied Chiyo before handing it to the red head, who is instantly crowded by his two companions to get a peak at the letter.

HAAH!? WHAT’S WITH THE DRAWINGS!? THEY’RE TERRIBLE!

Do you not have a brain, boar? It’s a letter! Those are words!” Zenitsu exclaims.

LETTER!? WHO NEEDS THOSE!? WHO EVEN READS!?”

EVERYONE YOU IDIO-

I uh.. can’t read that well either, Agatsuma-san.” You say, before the blonde can finish, and you watch as his eyes nearly pop from their sockets.

YOU WHAT!?” He coughs into his hands, before turning serious, “That’s fine, I can always help you learn! After all, learning a new language is hard!

You turn back to Tanjiro with a small laugh, who looks both concerned and confused, “It’s true, the letter says the master is sending you on a mission, but if you can’t read that well, and the master is your language teacher, why would he send a letter instead of a crow?”

That’s the thing you kids don’t understand!” Chiyo butts in, you hadn’t even noticed she had disappeared somewhere, but her hands being filled with that same haori and sword she gave you on your last mission, showed she had made off silently, “Your master is a conniving little-”

He probably did it on purpose,” you mutter, “after all, being thrown in is the best way to learn andI need to learn to read, I guess.

That means that dogis your kasugai crow?” Zenitsu asks no one in particular, and you shrug, putting on the haori Chiyo hands you with a grumble. It looks as good as new, as does the blade she hands you after.

Uhm, dog?” You awkwardly get the creature’s attention, and it comes bounding towards you as if it can understand you, “Are you going to lead me to where I need to go?”

The living cloud barks, as if to answer a ‘yes!’ to your question, before running towards and out of the sliding door and outside.

You go to follow, before hands grasp your shoulders firmly and swivel you around. You’re met with none other than Chiyo, though she looks more reluctant than angry this time.

“The letter says you’ll be off to a village that has been left abandoned after a demon attacked it, leaving no survivors,” she starts, you swear you feel her hand tremble, “I won’t lie to ya, this demon’ll be a tough one - killing an entire village ain’t a tiny feat, but I guess ya did sign up for this.”

You nod firmly and she returns it, “Remember, there ain’t any shame in retreating if ya find yourself in a losing battle - if I don’t see ya home in five days I'm coming down there myself to ring your neck.”

Again you nod, and start to make your way to the exit.

BUT WHO’S GONNA PROTECT ME IF YOU’RE NOT HERE!?”

You’ve got this [L/N]-san! Be careful, though, and get back safe!”

I’M HUNGRY!

See you, guys.

Notes:

Inosuke doesn't see missions as a scary thing - rather a fun activity that may or may not injure you severely, so him not wishing MC good luck isn't him being rude (on purpose), he really was just hungry LMAO

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The journey, similarly to the previous, is surprisingly uneventful. The most riveting thing that occurred was loosing some of the coins Chiyo had shoved into your hands to buy food, and getting the dog to sniff it out.

Speaking of the dog, you had yet to figure out it’s real name, instead, literally calling it ‘dog’. Though you had found it was a boy, and that he loved scratches behind the ears. He was a happy dog, floating around as if he didn’t have a potentially gruesome job, however you suppose it would be that different to a modern day mountain rescue dog from your universe.

Before the evening came, you haggled with a food stall owner for some scrapped chicken bones, which ‘dog’ happily chewed on, whilst you sipped on a hearty soup that made you insides warm.

‘Dog’ had gotten you up with a bark when the next dawn came, and you continued to follow the walking cloud before coming across a derelict looking entrance to a bunch of buildings. It takes you a few moments to register your furry friend snarling at nothing in particular.

“I’ll take it that this is it, then.” You mumble, cautiously unsheathing your (again, Chiyo’s) blade, “Are you gonna come, or…?”

‘Dog’ simply sits down with a tilt of his head and you take that as a no.

You suppose it makes sense, If you died, you’d need someone to send the message - but can’t help but think a crow would be faster to do that as well. Not to mention he stuck out like a sore thumb.

You leave the animal behind as you enter the village. It was definitely small, you can imagine it being a tightly knit community before the attack. You notice a building seems to have been set on fire - and swear you notice smoke still rising from the wood. You (unfortunately) don’t miss the wet splash of dark red coating the grass, along with a swarm of flies and smell of iron and something… sweet.

You push your suspicions aside as you move forward.

Wet blood, smoke coming from a burnt building.

This attack was recent - you must’ve been sent on this mission as soon as the corp was made aware of it.

However, the absence of bodies unsettled you. A demon had certainly had a large meal, a meal that would increase its strength exponentially. A strength that surpasses that needed to wipe out an entire village.

As you enter a building that was more or less intact, you catch the scent of something sweet again, and it causes your nose to scrunch in response, it makes you feel sick.

You push through the feeling, only to hear the deep rumble of buzzing behind a sliding door. You swallow thickly, something in your gut telling you to turn back and never return, but Chiyo was right, you did sign up for this - beg for it actually.

As you hook a hand into the doors panel and slide it open as quietly as you can physically bring yourself to, you feel something warm coat your fingers. You hesitate to look down, but can’t help yourself.

You nearly throw up on the spot at the thick red that coats it, and as you go to pull your hand from the door, you find you can’t.

You feel panic rush through your veins as you struggle against the hot blood seemingly gluing you to the door you had opened. And as an absentminded hum, followed by an airy chuckle and the buzzing getting louder, you feel your heart jump out of your body.

It seems we missed one, how silly of us…” it (they?) muses, “You really couldn’t help yourself, could you? You humans always come back for more, we're flattered!

A voice, or rather, voices, emerge from the darkness. They sound as though they come from every corner of the room, whilst simultaneously coming together as one. How many were there in this room? We? Was this some sort of cult of demons? A pack? What was this sticky substance that stuck you to this damn door like a rat to a rat trap? Blood? Why couldn't you get out of it?

we've seen those clothes before... you’re not from around here are you?” The voices creeps closer, the sweet scent you caught earlier comes back - it makes you feel sick to your core as soon as it invades your senses, you feel your free arm become clammy as your mind becomes a little hazier - as though you were inflicted with a fever.

Little demon slayers like you always find their way back to us, no matter how far I go - are we that hard to resist?” It giggles and you grit your teeth. This thing - whatever it may be, had killed before, but it hadn’t just killed innocent civilians, it had killed enough demon slayers to know about the organisation.

Thoughyou seem to be holding up quite well,” it says, you can make out the pout, “We wonder, how much will you be able to take?

When nights get cold on missions, he is a perfect cuddle companion! I wonder how he gets messages across when a letter isn't possible?
