When he had sneaked through the house, seven year-old Jack had had no idea this would prove to be his last night with Andrew. But would it have been any different if he had known? Would the pain have been any less brutal? Would it have been bearable enough that he wouldn't have had to forget? Probably not.
“Last chance.” Smurf warned him. “Get up or I won't be held responsible for what happens.”
Jack stayed resolutely anchored where he was. Even Andrew wasn't enjoining him to obey. Maybe it was how people had felt on the Titanic. Seconds before the ship had split in half and sunk deep into the ice cold waters.
An immovable force had met an immovable object. Except something always had to give. And one of those was definitely stronger than the other one.
