Chapter 1: The Deal
Chapter Text
The worse had happened. At least to Rumi at that time, the worse had happened. Mira and Zoey looked at Rumi with both confusion and fear. They had seen her patterns. They saw the truth she so desperately fought to hide. She tried to fix it, she tried so damn hard to fix it. Her eyes pleaded at her friends, her sisters practically, begging them to forgive her. To not fear her, she wasn't a demon.
But once they held up their blades at her, holding strong and ready to strike her down...even though their hearts weren't in it. Rumi didn't know they were fighting an internal battle themselves just as she was. They loved Rumi. She was their sister. She fought along side them, performed along side them and laughed and cried along side them. How was this even real?
Rather than take them on, Rumi turned and fled. Zoey and Mira sadly watched on, not even attempting to run after her.
She had ran into Jinu after her encounter with the girls. Her heart continued to shatter. He betrayed her. He let her friends find out about her secret and didn't bother to apologize about it. Whatever compassion she felt from him from that night on the rooftops, it was gone. In Jinus demon form, he stared her down coldly, not flinching at her sobs as she clutched at her arms. He told her they were monsters. They deserved to suffer. In an instant, he was gone. Leaving her broken on her own.
Which led to where she stood now. Standing behind Celine at the tree, observing the broken Honmoon. Sensing her presence, Celine slowly turned to face her. She expected her to come. Rumi couldn't read her expression. She was calm, stood tall as she always did. It scared Rumi.
"It seems things didn't work the way we thought it would at the awards show tonight." Celine spoke softly.
"They saw me Celine...they....they were afraid." Rumi's voice shook.
"As I told you they would."
"No! They just didn't understand, I didn't get to explain!"
"It would not have made a difference."
Rumi's heart continued to break at the cold demeaner Celine held. Although her voice remained soft, almost how she used to talk to Rumi as a young girl. Rumi dropped to her knees, her sword that she had gripped tight in her hands now held the blade towards Celine. She bowed her head as she offered the blade to Celine.
"Just end it then." Rumi said it loud. She didn't cry this time. She had a drop a strength that hadn't been torn down yet and she needed it to die on her own terms. Her eyes shut, her arms still extended upwards holding the blade.
"I don't think that would be necessary."
Rumi's eyes shot opened wide. It wasn't Celine who just spoke.
Rumi stood up and turned to see a man she never seen before. He clearly was a demon, stood tall like one, sinister red markings covering his body and face. His eyes red and black, making the hair stand on her neck.
"We've never been formally introduced. Though, I know all about you Rumi." He spoke, his voice deep with a malicious tone as he smiled at her.
"Gwi-ma." Rumi whispered. She turned to look at Celine, shocked to see how calm and still she stood. Not at all bothered by his presence. She was expecting him as well.
"What is this?" Rumi asked her.
"It's a peace offering." Celine spoke.
"What?"
"There was nothing that could have been done to repair the Honmoon. Many lives are at stake. We did the best we could for so long but theres only so much at this point, especially now."
"Celine...what did you do?"
"I decided to try humanity differently. Sealing the Honmoon is much easier on my end. I don't need to sing a tune for it to happen either. I can do it with the snap of of my fingers." Gwi-ma smiled at Rumi, causing her to step back.
"I'll seal the Honmoon, keep away from your precious souls. I only ask for one small thing."
Rumi's eyes widened with horror. He didn't need to say it. She knew what Celine exchanged.
Rumi, unblinking stared in disbelief at Celine, walking towards her quicker than she intended.
"Why? You...you promised my mother!" Rumi screamed.
"I AM keeping my word! The world is safe! And he promised not to kill you. Mira and Zoey will be safe, continuing to make music without the added stress of hunting monsters. They can be happy now Rumi. They have been begging for a break and maybe this is good way to give it to them." Celine reached for Rumi's face who was now standing only inches away from her. Rumi recoiled at her touched and instead without even thinking punched Celine in the jaw, knocking her down and taking her by surprise. She held her blade up high over Celine who quickly rolled out of the way only a second before Rumi brought down her sword, slamming it to the ground where Celine once lay.
"Rumi!" Celine screamed.
Rumi walked over, blade dragging her Four Tiger Sword as it glows a purple hue, stalking closer to Celine.
"I trusted you." Rumi cried.
"Yet this is how she repays your trust" Gwi-ma spoke in her ear. Rumi didn't even realize how close he was to her, spinning quickly to slash at him. Of course he wasn't there. He had teleported a few feet behind her. Rumi spun again, breathing in frustration and exhaustion.
"Kill her Rumi. You know you need to." He taunted her, playing with her feelings. It was cruel. Then again, all of this was.
Overwhelmed by her emotions, her loss, her heartbreak, Rumi screamed. Her demon voice overpowering her Hunter voice, shaking the ground. She even knocked Gwi-ma over as her thunderous cry continued.
"Jinu stop her!" Gwi-ma shouted.
Rumi didn't hear him. She continued to scream, a blinding rage taking over. She did feel someone appear behind her and stopped screaming to blindly attack him. She didn't see him quickly move behind her after she turned, locking his arm around her neck. She gritted her teeth as she took out another small blade she kept for emergencies in her pocket. But as she kept one hand on Jinu's arm, trying to break his hold, her other hand grasping the blade was suddenly grabbed by Jinu's other hand. Her eyes widened. She was stuck. He squeezed her throat harder, causing her to drop to her knee, he lowered himself with her as she did, keeping his hold on her. Her eyes began to flutter.
"Don't fight it." Jinu spoke softly to her. It made it worse. The sweet voice that at some recent point gave her butterflies in her stomach now caused her heart to shatter. If she wasn't broken before, she sure felt it now.
Rumi groaned as she tried to fight Jinu's grip. But no matter how strong she may be, he was stronger right now. Her hand loosened its grip on her small blade, causing it to fall.
"There we go...almost there now." Jinu cooed into her ear.
Her eyes rolled to the back of her head until she started seeing stars. It was them Jinu finally loosened his grip, feeling her body go limp in his arms. He looked down and saw her eyes flutter, tears falling as she finally succumbs to unconsciousness.
Gwi-Ma smiled at Jinu's success. He turned to look at Celine who had stood up, blood dripping from her lip. She didn't interfere. She watched it all. Once Rumi was unconscious, she turned to Gwi-ma.
"Is it done then?" She asked.
Gwi-ma simply smiled, snapped his fingers and the dark dreary tone of the world was lifted. The sun shined bright, as if nothing ever happened.
"This is one time kind of thing. I still haven't forgotten all the decades of torment I dealt with all you hunters. So never attempt to contact me again. And if the other two try coming for her, the deal will be off. Ill take all three of them, you too. The rest of the world too!" He shouted, smiling as Celine angrily turned and left them.
Gwi-ma turned his attention back to Jinu and the hunter that laid still in his arms on the ground.
"You're really going to stop devouring souls?" Jinu asked.
"I said I'd seal the Honmoon. Never said where we would be standing when I did."
"But you did say you would stop taking souls in your deal."
"Not technically. Beautiful thing, loopholes. Anyways, seeing you form your little band gave me inspiration. I kind of like this human form. So many things I can do with this here. So many lives to toy with...so many souls." He smiled. "Now, pick her up. We have a new home waiting for us.
Jinu nodded, waiting for Gwi-ma to turn before he looked at Rumi's face a second longer. She wasn't injured per say, maybe her pride he thought. Definitely her heart. He knew he'd done that. He won't ever admit it, but it crushed him. He silently took a deep breath and lifted her body, cradling her in his arms as her head rolled back slowly. They quickly disappeared in a cloud of red smoke.
Chapter Text
Jinu stood before Gwi-ma under very different...strange circumstances. For centuries, Gwi-ma was in his true demon form that was beyond this world. Jinu heard rumors about a time where Gwi-ma had humanized his form, some completely human in appearance, like he becomes in Saja Boys. Then he had his human for with the usual demon patters about his body; though of course even that stood out differently. While most demons had a purple hue about their skin and demon patterns, Gwi-ma was more grey with crimson and black patterns. His markings at times almost looked like writings in a different language, a language no one else seemed to understand.
Gwi-ma also never left the underworld where all the demons resided, trapped under the Honmoon. He had sent his demons out to do his bidding; that was always how its been. No one knew what happened to those who would return from the world empty handed and Jinu was almost relieved to never find out.
So this new setting was strange to say the least. Jinu stood in his demon form waiting for Gwi-ma in an office, or more like a study given its size inside this estate. Jinu had no idea what was going through Gwi-ma's mind. Why the sudden change in appearance, why the move to the real world, why the deal with Celine for Rumi.
Rumi....
He hadn't forgotten. Which is confusing. Gwi-ma held his end of the bargain and erased his memories the moment the Huntrix were over. But why is his thoughts of Rumi still there?
He didn't understand why it was troubling him. His past identity is gone. Even standing in the luxurious study wasn't bothering him nor Gwi-ma's victory, though for just a moment...he had hoped Gwi-ma would fail.
However, they were successful. The Huntrix had a public break up. But what was supposed to happen didn't happen. The world would have been darker, drearier, broken, filled with people at the end of their ropes and being pushed to do unthinkable things. Instead, as Jinu looks out the window to see a bright sky, people living their lives however they choose. He couldn't care less.
"Jinu. What do you think of the new humble abode?" Gwi-ma entered, smiling as he glided over towards Jinu.
"It's surprisingly human." Jinu turned to look at him. It interested Jinu just a bit to see he still stood taller than human Gwi-ma. Pleasant change he'll happily accept.
"Isn't it? I do have to say there are some exquisite tasteful things about this world that I should have been a little more open minded to. I think I've been doing it wrong. Not always wrong but maybe I should have adapted to some changes."
"What do you mean?"
Still grinning like an evil Cheshire cat, Gwi-ma walked over to the desk, seating himself on the long black throne of a chair almost taking in the moment of it before he answered. "In the few days of being on this side, we have collected quite the souls. It's easier this way some how. Especially easy if you have the power they can actually see! I'm building myself an empire here. Its childish, I know but I think I feel inspired by the fall of those damn hunters."
"What about the other two?"
"They're useless. When I feel up to it, I'll take their souls. Right now, they no longer are the main priorities. They're not even on the list any longer. Not that way have the one who led their little army. They are NOTHING without her. Even if they find another voice, it won't equate to the power she has. Interesting enough, I don't even think Rumi herself is aware of the power she controls."
"What are your plans for her?" Jinu had no sense of emotion in his voice. It amused Gwi-ma.
"Well, what do you think I should do? After all, you worked close with her, I'm sure you may have developed some kind of feeling?"
"Of course. She was the first woman I really spoke to in hundreds of years. Call it the weakness of man. But now...my head is clear. I feel nothing."
Gwi-ma seemed to study him as he spoke. "Interesting. What then would you recommend?"
"I honestly don't know. Put her out of her misery maybe. I'm sure she won't be useful to us anymore, not that she'll even embrace her inner demon. She won't ever be compliant so unless you just plan on torturing her, just kill her."
It almost shocked Jinu as the words came out but he didn't mean it as Gwi-ma took it. Gwi-ma was practically on cloud 9 with what Jinu was saying. Jinu however would rather her dead than with whatever horrible cruel fate Gwi-ma actually had in store. Hes heard stories of Gwi-ma's tortures. He even felt it himself before but not to the full extent of what Gwi-ma was capable of.
"Well, I'm not going to kill her. Not now anyways. Thats too easy. However you have given me a lot to consider. You've exceeded my expectations. I have some planning to do. Now you, what would you like to do?"
Jinu looked confused again. "With what?"
"Well this is the world of the living. They know you as Saja Boys. Do you wish to continue that?"
Jinu didn't hesitate. He shook his head. "No. It was just a cover."
"Thats okay. In that case I offer you a position with me. I'm gonna need someone I can trust to keep things going smoothly. Maybe you have to collect a soul here or there, or maybe you have to be human and attend a meeting in my stead. I want an Empire Jinu. If it means playing human for a while fine but I want you as my right hand. Even if you have to kill."
Jinu knew he said it as an offer, however he also knew you don't refuse Gwi-ma's offers. So he nodded. "Thank you sir."
Gwi-ma's eyes glistened crimson for a moment as he smiled. "Wonderful. For the time being, take a break. You earned it. Now leave."
Jinu found himself walking in her direction. He knew where she was kept and due to his attitude towards with Gwi-ma, he knew no one would be bothering him about it. Gwi-ma moved into a large estate home but Jinu was granted permission to have his own dwellings wherever he chose. He was beyond thankful for that whether he was working with or against Gwi-ma. Just behind the estate was another small building used as a makeshift prison. It was meant for those who disobeyed or gwi-ma's kill list. However where Rumi was being held was specially made for her after she demonstrated just a drop of her power she didn't understand.
Jinu walked down the dark crimson tiled floor passing numerous holding rooms until he got to the very end of the hall. A guard, which was a demon in human form sat outside the door idly browsing his phone. He almost jumped out of his skin when he glanced up at Jinu.
"Oh! Jinu sir! My apologies sir!"
"You're lucky it was just me. She would have killed you." He placed his hand over the right side of the door, a purple hue of smoke forming until it activated the door. He knew only 4 can access this door. Gwi-ma, he and 2 muscle demons in charge of moving her if needed. It was only activated through a demon but not the minor minions used. Especially not the useless guard.
The door lit up bright before the handle appeared allowing Jinu to open it. He stepped in and wasn't surprised to see she was in the exact same spot she was left in. Not that she had any other choice.
Her arms were suspended high with thick metal cuffs that swallowed both her hands together above her head. She was held so painful high she was nearly on her tiptoes. Her head was dropped in shame. Her patterns somehow seemed to be a tint darker than he remembered but it could just be the light in the cell, or lack there of.
"'I don't know what he has planned for you. Its not death. Not now at least."
Her head remained low.
"I know you don't want to believe me. But I had no choice. Nothing we could have done would have made a difference. So if he offers you anything, to join him or whatever keeps you alive just do it. Because things can be worse."
She remained silent.
"I guess its useless to tell you that right now is it?"
She refused to move but he knew she was awake and listening. He didn't know what else to say. But he couldn't walk away. Instead his hand reached out to touch her face, just so he can see those eyes once more. He didn't realize how much he wanted to see them. But as soon as his fingers touched her skin she snapped.
"Don't touch me! DON'T FUCKING TOU-" as her voice raised, a muzzle suddenly appeared with purple smoke around her face, completely covering her mouth and muffling her anger. Her patterns that slowly started glow immediately diminished. Jinu knew Gwi-ma would have found a way to control her voice while in the cell. He was informed about it. It did only work on its own in that cell. Any other time it would have to be done manually or just with their powers.
Rumi was furious and shook and pulled at her restraints, until she tired herself and just dropped, grunting at Jinu."
"I don't blame you for hating me. Just do what I say. Don't resist. Don't fight. Its just gonna make it harder on you. Don't you want a break Rumi?"
She looked up at him, the eyes he wanted to look at filled with rage and tears she fought viciously to keep from falling. It surprised him. He didn't think she'd have anything left after everything. Though it wasn't much it was something. Had the gag not activated she could have managed to escape most likely. Not that she would have gotten far.
"That will come off when you calm down."
With out any other word. Jinu turned. Rumi watched as he placed his hand on the door, activating the handle to appear. He hesitated for a moment before he turned the handle and left, the handle disappearing the moment it closed.
It took a few hours before the gag finally disappeared. She wished the chains would do the same but of course nothing came easy. She didn't care about whatever he had to say. The fact he had the nerve to even show his face to her was cruel. Then he just expects her to cooperate? She wasn't ready to give up. Not yet at least.
Little does he know she had been focusing on her escape. She knew very little about her demon powers. But she knew they were there and maybe they can help her if she concentrated enough. On what she should be concentrating on, she didn't know. She was winging it but what did she even have to lose for trying? Plus she also didn't care about whatever the plans for her were. She didn't care if it was death or torture but she was NOT joining them under any circumstances. So throughout her captivity she had been secretly plotting and working on her power, being very careful not to activate anything in the room or alert any guards so using her voice was a no.
She meditated, thinking about the restraints on her hands, trying to figure it out like a mental puzzle box. She lost track of time. She knew its been days at least. She denied talking to anyone who tried to feed her. She also refused to eat which she was sure would have some effect at some point worse than it already did. But she didn't trust eating or drinking anything they offered her. She'd rather starve.
Suddenly, her body dropped to the ground with a painful thud. She hadn't even realized it, but she broke the restraint. She bit her lip fighting the loud cry she nearly let out as she instantly felt pain shooting to her shoulders. Her arms were sore from being held for so long. But she shook it off as quick as she could, ignoring her body's aching pleas for rest and nourishment. It was logical to have accepted any food, she could have used that strength. But she wasn't in a logical thinking mind right now. It was just feral survival.
She struggled to get to her feet but once she stood, she almost for a second felt like her old self. But that could just be she hasn't been untied in days. She walked over to the door, bracing herself for a new puzzle.
"Demon activated right?" She whispered. Too afraid of using her voice.
With a trembling hand, she placed it close to the side of the door Jinu did. She closed her eyes, allowing the demon side of her blood to work a moment before she saw the bright light. Then the handle.
It was surprisingly easy. She opened the door and her sword appeared at her will, slicing the very distracted demon in half as she quickly ran to the end of the hall. She reached the door and opened it, feeling the night cool sky touch her skin. She looked around and saw some demons patrolling the area. No one saw her shadow as she leapt up to the roof and over the gate that contained her prison. Once her feet landed on the concrete she put her sword away and took off running.
Notes:
Its short I know but the next one will have more!
Chapter 3: Why?
Chapter Text
Don't think about how easy it was.
Don't think about where to go.
Just go!
Rumi found a surge of adrenaline shoot through her veins. She didn't have any sense of direction she just let her legs carry her quickly and hidden through the shadows of the alleys until she was on the rooftops. She finally came to a halt, gasping air, painful prickly aches in her lungs. She has never felt as weak as she did right now. Mentally, emotionally, physically, all drained. She wasn't even sure what the point of her being here was. Why did she come? Maybe a drop of hope held on to her heart. Whatever it was, she didn't stop from opening her old balcony door and quietly sneaking into her room.
She turned on her light, dimming it down as low as possible. She took a moment to look around her room, seeing it completely untouched. Although she did notice some pages scattered on her bed, most of it lyric drafts and journaling notes for inspiration. Nothing that would be really much of anything. She imagined Zoey and Mira looking around and trying to find anything that could have given them an answer. Because she didn't say anything. Not even after.
"I'm so stupid." She whispered, fighting tears.
Maybe they would listen. Maybe they would hear her whole truth and will stay...maybe?
Rumi slowly walked to her door, opening it as slow as she could. She peeked around the hallway, not seeing much in the dark. Zoey's room was the closest. Just 2 doors down. Then Mira. Then....Celines.
Rumi didn't wanna think about it. She held her breath as she tip-toed over to Zoey's door. Her hand trembled as she touched the door knob, turned and opened.
"Zoey?" Rumi whispered.
Silence.
It scared her. Zoey was a snorer. She didn't even hear breathing. She didn't hesitate and reached for the light switch. Rumi's eyes quickly adjusted and widened.
The room was empty. No posters, no photos, not clothes scattered on the floor, dresser top that had the clutter of makeup was now bare. Her bedsheets were even gone.
Rumi wasn't trying to be quiet anymore. She made a bee-line for Miras room, opening the door and turning on the light. Bare. Everything gone.
The tears had started falling. She thought the worse would have been if they replaced her. But this was worse. They just left her. No trying to find her, seeing if she was okay or even a live. No goodbyes.
She collapsed to her knees. It was too much. This was beyond what she could handle.
"What are you doing here?"
Rumi's eyes shot open. Glowing. She slowly rose, turned to face her.
"How are you here? Why?" Celine demanded, clutching her black silk kimono robe tightly, her other hand holding her blade.
"Where are they?" Rumi's voice was hoarse, cracked as she spoke.
Celine's face nearly softened for a moment, but maybe it was a trick of the light.
"They...they didn't take the news well."
"So you told them the truth? How you sold me!"
"For peace!"
"If you really believe, that suddenly the demon lord who survived mainly on devouring souls is suddenly gonna give it all up just for a hunter? Did you ever stop to think how ridiculous that sounds? No fucking questions asked?!" Rumis patters softly glowed.
Celine took a step back trying to keep a space between her and the girl she once considered a daughter. Her best friends daughter really. What would she say to Celine now? Celine buried that thought deep down.
"I think Zoey went back to america. Mira went off on her own with no words. They're not here. I don't know where they went, they won't speak to me. So please, go away! Before he finds you and takes back his promise!"
"Do you even know where I've been? Do you even care? I've been chained up ever since they took me! I just wanted to be with my sisters and tell them the truth my way! Like I should have done! But you took the chance from me! More than once!"
"And I was right! They were ready to strike you down the moment they saw you for what you truly are! Just another demon!"
Swish.
Rumi didn't even see it happened. She didn't even feel it. But as she looked down, Celines blade had cut into her abdomen. The slice was getting to be critical though if she doesn't stop the bleeding.
With her eyes burning with the same hues of a blazing fire, she dashed forward as quick as she ever moved.
Celine gasp.
Rumi was inches away from her face, angrily glaring at her, breathing hard. But Celine looked pale, shocked, fear in her eyes. This wasn't normal.
Celine looked down, Rumi's eyes following seeing it was now Rumi's blade that fought back, landed its strike. Celines blow to Rumi wasn't fatal. However...Rumi's was.
Rumi, now shocked, her glowing patterns and eyes now dimmed. Celine started to collapse, caught by Rumi's arms which caused them both to fall.
"I'm sorry!" Rumi sobbed. But it was too late. Celine has now gone lifeless in her arms, her eyes left opened, unmoving, frozen.
"Please, wait! Why did I do that? Why?" Rumi held her once mentor, her guardian. She waved her hand over the blade until it disappeared into smoke. Then suddenly, she was gone.
Gwi-ma entered the Huntrix estate, fuming. Jinu almost found it comical. Of course she escaped. She wasn't stupid, she was powerful and stronger than she even knows. Gwi-ma had killed half the new "staff" he recruited as found out the news. If anything would be his downfall, Jinu was sure it would be his ego. After he had lost his temper, Gwi-ma calmed down and went about planning and had some new demons he recruited for muscle. They entered first, blasting the door opening with just a touch. They swarmed in, Jinu behind them, Gwi-ma behind him.
"Its quiet. They must know we're here." A demon said.
"Should we spread out?" Another asked.
Gwi-ma took 2 steps into the place and immediately stopped. He smelled something familiar, like an old friend.
"Death" He smiled.
He pointed up, and they all followed him to the staircase, climbing up quickly. They walked down the hall until they spotted her. Celine's lifeless body.
"Oh dear. How unfortunate. I always hoped it would be me to do it." Gwi-ma knelt down, touching Celine's cold skin.
"Looks like our sweet little Rumi is losing a sense of humanity. Although, something tells me Celine was asking for it. Drove me insane for years. Still, didn't think she would have it in her. Maybe she'll be easier to break in."
"Break in?" Jinu asked.
"Yes. I have hundreds of ideas for her but no matter what I decide, things would be easier to have her broken."
"I'll find her then."
Gwi-ma raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
"She's dangerous on her own right now. Besides, we never know if she'll find the others and try to reconcile. I'm assuming that's why she came in the first place."
"You think?"
Jinu pointed to Rumi's bedroom. "That's her room. She has a balcony with a sliding door. It would have been safer for her to enter that way. Then she stopped at Zoeys room. The door is opened and the light is on. And here is Miras room. The light is on here. She must have discovered it empty and thats when Celine probably entered. Regardless how things ended with them they still have a special bond that can be healed. I can find her before that happens and bring her back. And if you trust me sir, I'll make sure it never happens again." Jinu glowed into his demon form, ending his promise with a cold grin to Gwi-ma.
Gwi-ma was thrilled. "You really have come into something incredible Jinu. Work quickly now." Then he and his other minions were gone, leaving Jinu and Celines body alone.
He stared at her body, feeling nothing but anger.
"How could you have done this to her?" He whispered.
He turned and walked to Rumi's room. He turned on her light brighter than what she had to get a better look at the room. It was an eerie feeling for him. He felt his bond he had with Rumi before nearly deteriorating as the days go by. But he couldn't explain the odd feeling that was coming over her him. Why was he so eager to get her himself? Why did the thoughts of Gwi-ma's greedy disgusting hands getting to Rumi infuriated him to his core? He thought he would be rid of his feelings for her but its also not quite the same. No matter, he had a job to do and fussing over his feelings was just slowing him down.
He looked about her room, made a few mental notes. But his eyes went straight to the small pile on the floor. It was her white worn and torn costume shes had on since her capture which couldn't have been comfortable. He also notice how soaked with blood they were. His fingers touched the spot and lit under his touch. It wasn't Celines blood. It was Rumi's. He turned, looking in the direction of Celines body.
"She attacked you first didn't she?"
He grunted in disgust. Rumi had told him all about how much she adored Celine, how she raised her after her mothers passing. But something always seemed off to him. Celine teaching Rumi to hide her truth from her own friends, making her feel insecure about herself...it seemed cruel. But of course at that time he never questioned it. He just enjoyed her talking about her life, sharing those intimate feelings. He was excited at the idea of learning more about her but now he knew that was over. She'll probably never talk like that with him again. He shrugged that thought away. It didn't bother him like it should. He was too focused now.
He noticed her bathroom door was opened and light left on. He stepped inside and in front of the sink was a very long purple braid. She must have grabbed it in her hand and roughly chopped it off, the braid still intact. He also noticed black stains smeared all over the once pristine white sink.
So, were trying to blend into the crowd now? He almost chuckled. It wasn't gonna make his job any harder. He walked back over to the clothes that she had removed and placed his hands on them, a bright pink cloud of smoked formed, changing into a ribbon of light. It shot out from where he stood to the balcony. Jinu watched as it extending, making a little guide for him. He followed.
Rumi had no plans. She had no idea what to do or where to go. Should she reach out to the girls? Should she tell them what happened to Celine? She was overwhelmed, heartbroken, exhausted, in excruciating pain. She had gathered up some cash she had stored, changed into black jeans, a white tank top and black hoodie. She had a dark purple knit hat underneath her hood. She walked into a nearby store, grabbed some medical supplies like gauze, tape, alcohol, anything that can help her along with some drinks and a protein bar. She boarded a train, unsure where her destination was. She only stayed on for an hour before she mindlessly rose up, dragging her feet to the entrance of a low quality motel. She booked for a few days, just enough time for her to figure out what to do with herself.
But its been hours, all she did was sit in the empty tub, legs hanging over as she decided to light a joint she had saved. Well she had several. It was a secret between the girls and Celine. They would sneak out at night sometimes, go to a different spot each time, like in a wide park under the trees or on the roof tops. They'd light up, smoke pot and laugh and cry together over all the silly things. Rumis eyes, though red at the moment where glassy, welled with tears. She was on her third, very well and FILLED wrapped blunt that Zoey had done. It was the most shes ever done, usually they shared only one. But three on her own, she wasn't in pain anymore. She wasn't upset, she wasn't scared, or anything. She watched the smoke play around her, creating different shapes before expanding into a large cloud.
She was much too high, too dazed to see him entering the bathroom.
"Are you fucking kidding me?" He snapped at her. He stared at her thin frame just sitting in the empty tub, still fully clothed, her hair stained black, some purple spots visible made it almost look she had purple highlights. Her hair was nw just below her shoulders which was still a little long but not compared to before.
Her eyes focused quickly, but she didn't budge yet. Jinu looked so different to her at this moment. He seemed even taller but maybe that was because she was laying in the tub and he was standing, towering over her. He wasn't dressed in his usual casual attire when he wasn't in demon form. Instead he wore all black, fitted jeans, leather jacket, black turtle neck. He seemed almost like could be some rebel assassin.
"Can you just go away." She mumbled.
"How stupid can you be? Do you have any idea what kind of situation you are in? Is it pleasant? No, but you had a chance to make it easy on yourself!"
"Make it easy on myself? Ha. Please don't make me laugh its gonna fuck up my stomach." She wince as she tried to readjust.
"Get up. I'm not asking or saying it a second time."
"Good. You said it. Now go." She glared at him.
Jinu clenched his jaw, stepping forward. "Don't play with me Rumi. You think I give a shit if I have to tie you down and drag you back because I will. And I won't lose sleep over it either."
Rumi's eyes began to glow, her teeth gritted, she launched herself forward, knocking Jinu down. Her blade materialized and as she started to slash at him, he already was behind her. She turned too late and he had grabbed her neck and tossed her roughly to the wall where she hit it painfully and landed on the cheap small bed. He advanced towards her but she grabbed the lamp on the night stand and with all the strength she had left she hurled it towards his head.
"I WON'T GO ANYWHERE WITH YOU!" She screamed, her voice raising, an echo to it that let Jinu know he only had maybe 3 seconds to get her subdued. That was fine, it was all he needed. He was prepared this time.
With perfect skill, he dashed towards her before her voice can shake the room, piercing her neck with a needle. However he had only pushed a little liquid before she quickly head butted him, slapping the needle to the ground. She started to attack him again but by now, shes been injured, shes lost blood, shes been starved, shes also now high and the effects of whatever liquid was put into her system, Rumi's vision started to blur. She stumbled, looking for him, swinging her arms aimlessly, unable to see where anything was. There was nothing she could do as he walked quietly behind her, guided her towards the bed with his hands on her upper arms.
She groaned, tried to fight but there was nothing left.
"Stop." She was breathless now.
Jinu remained silent. His hands were firm but he wasn't being rough with her anymore as she brought her wrists behind her back, binding them with a black thin rope. She struggled, groaning in anger until he had no choice, placing a black cloth over her lips, tying it tight behind her head. This was for both their safety at this point. Once her legs were bound, he turned her body and watched her eyes roll back until she was out. He lifted her in his arms, cradling her to his chest. It was extreme. But he rather him do this than whatever the fuck Gwi-ma wanted. She was his. Was she? Strange...this feeling. He ignored those thoughts and together they were gone in a cloud of smoke.
Rumi had stumbled
Chapter 4: Caged Songbird
Chapter Text
Jinu didn't trust Gwi-ma at all, if not ever. Why would he? He was practically slave bound to him. He cannot recall how it came to be and he knows why. But he does know that in his time as a demon, he himself has been tortured, maybe not as bad as others but he took a few blunt hits from Gwi-ma, to say it nicely. He didn't care for it but he didn't really care for anything during those years. He was relieved when Gwi-mas lesser demons became his main targets for abuse, watching those poor weird creatures slaughtered to oblivion. He never gave a shit. Until he found a chance to end his tortured mind. It was the Huntrix. He saw many versions of them through the years. He was intrigued by them. Interesting to see an enemy that actually gave push back to Gwi-ma. Jinu buried thought of Gwi-mas potential demise deep down inside the darkest depths of his soul where Gwi-ma would never find his true feelings. Something about the Huntrix felt different than their predecessors. He couldn't figure out why but it motivated something in him he thought was gone. Hope. Granted, it was for the wrong reasons. Then he met Rumi. Their first fight is where his heart stopped. She was a vision. He was angering her, playing around as he jokingly dodged her attacks, expecting her to tire out. But she never did. She stayed on top, never skipping a beat, flawlessly striking at him, coming dangerously close. It was then he felt her strength, he felt she had him. He actually believed he might possibly have met his match, the determination that blazed in her round almond eye, the color of hazel brown. Its when he noticed they were glowing to an amber color. He thought it was a trick of the light but then he saw her patterns. That was it then, she was part demon. She was a phenomenon, something highly valuable. She saw herself as curse, as a monster, something shameful. He knows he probably didn't help make any easier recently. But thats fine. She needs to finally accept herself. Even if it means he has to break it out of her. If anyone was gonna break her he was gonna make sure it was him. He was growing possessive and he still ignored the feelings. For now, hes keeping himself in Gwi-mas good graces, he was granted permission to be in charge of Rumi and given his own home to do as he please. Gwi-ma did say he'd be checking in unannounced which didn't surprise or worry him. A small thud coming from below caught his attention.
"Surprised you waited this long." He mumbled, raising up from his couch.
Rumi's eyes opened slowly. She had a nauseating feeling come over her, stirring her awake very uncomfortably. She leaned over her bed and vomited. It burned her throat, causing her to dry heave until every content in her stomach was emptied. She groaned sitting up, reaching up to rub her head only for hand to remain where it was. She shook her head trying to regain some composure and looked around. She was in a small room, bare white walls and interior that almost resembled a private room in a hospital. She was on a hospital bed, IV hooked into her arm. She also saw her wrist were bound to the rails of the bed in padded cuffs. She rolled her eyes in aggravation but didn't want to just wait around. She leaned forward to attempt to bite at the cuffs but a surge of pain his her in the abdomen as she put pressure while bending.
"What the hell?" She gasp. For a moment she had forgotten all about what had occurred in her previous home. It came flooding back very quickly. The empty house, the girls gone, Celines betrayal and cruel words. Then she attacked her, and Rumi killed her. The tears started coming in hard, her head shaking. She didn't mean to do it. No matter what had happened she didn't want to do it. She didn't want Celine to die. She raised her, gave her something beautiful like the Huntrix, sisters like Mira and Zoey.
It all came back so harder Rumi started glowing. She let out a loud sob that wasn't strong enough to do as much damage as the first time she let out her cry, but it was enough to help her pull herself free from the restraints. She quickly peeled them off her wrists and swung her legs over the bed ready to head for the door when her legs just became jelly. She tried to catch herself but wasn't quick enough as her body stumbled to the ground.
"Damnit!" She grunted, thankful she didn't land in the vomit at least.
The door opened up and there stood Jinu, looking down on her with a mockingly disappointed look in his eye.
"Tsk tsk tsk, what a difficult little patient you are."
She grabbed the cuff that was by her hand and threw it at him with all her strength. He slapped it casually away from hitting his face.
"Now if this is how you're gonna behave then I have to take more drastic measures." Jinu walked into the room, seeing the vomit. "Should have figured that might happen. I should have been checking in more. Although I thought I had you sedated enough to help you sleep through recovery."
"Recovery?" She was glaring at him but was very confused.
"You were slashed really hard on your stomach. It went untreated for longer than it should have."
"I wrapped it!"
"Like a child! You were wreckless! You have any idea what he will do to you? Do you have any idea what would have happened if he caught you before I did? Whats worse is you went to the most obvious first place he'd look. And for what? There was no one there for you, the girls packed up and left! And Celine didn't hesitate before hurting you!"
"No! Thats not what happened!" Rumis watery eyes betrayed the pain she tried to hide. But Jinu was hitting the worse buttons.
"Isn't it? You wouldn't kill her for no reason Rumi, you're no cold blooded monster. Not like me." His eyes darkened, he knelt down meeting Rumi's eye level. Her eyes were already glowing through the glossy watery shield.
"Then you put yourself in this shittiest motel you can find, getting yourself stoned out of your mind. Great thing to do by the way when you're out on the run. Did you really think you even went far enough? It was so easy to find out."
"SHUT UP!" She shouted, her patterns glowed, but there was no echo, probably because how weak she was.
"Yeah about that. We're gonna keep that voice down low for now. You can sing a tune if you want, I don't care. But the moment you decide to do some screaming, I'll have to gag you. I rather not. But if I have to, trust me when I say I won't hesitate. So if I were you, I'd calm down, get back in that bed, and stop fucking trying to escape."
He didn't give her a chance to react as scooped her in his arms and placed her on the bed. She slapped at him but he place his hand on her chest, making her lay back down. He had her strapped back down in less than a minute. She gave up the fight once her second wrist was cuffed back. He walked over to a desk in the corner of the room, rummaging through medical supplies until he found what he needed and marched back to Rumi. She started shaking her head when she saw what was in his hand.
"No, don't touch me with that! Don't you dare!"
He ignored her pleas as he injected a sedative into her arm. "Its a heavier dose so that should help you heal from your injuries faster. I need more time to prep your room anyways." He took out the needle once done, wiping the spot with his own thumb. He couldn't ignore the feeling her soft cool skin gave him just from a brief touch. He watched her glare at him angrily until her breathing started to slow, her eyes rolled, her head slumped. She struggled to fight the feeling of her eyes closing which did amuse him. What a stubborn little hybrid. She eventually succumbed to her forced sleep.
"What a sight." Gwi-mas voice sliced through the calm quiet room.
Jinu turned to see him standing behind him, his demon patterns glowing. "I mean I would be an absolute fool to say she isn't a beauty. She's even lovelier when she's silent. Nice and peaceful." He walked closer to her, placing his hand over her patterns on her arms, not touching her skin. Jinu again, found himself trying not to tear Gwi-ma away from her. Why? He shook his head trying to get back in the right state of mind.
"Its so frustrating that even as her demon blood flows stronger now, I still can't sense her. I thought maybe by weakening her state some kind of shield would break by now."
"Is it even possible for you to be able to do so? She may have demon blood but she also has the blood of a hunter." Jinu also was curious about the matter.
"I don't know. Truth be told, this has never happened before so I have nothing to go by." He lingered on her body a little longer before turning completely to Jinu. "I've been keeping busy with my new empire. Its just beginning but its a fun way to gather souls, relish in the human wicked deeds and all that fun. It has been very enjoyable. No sign of the other two so thats not something I'm too worried about but as far as Rumi goes, maybe find a way to have her join our side. If that doesn't work be forceful. If that doesn't work then be violent. Keep her quiet, make sure she isn't able to step one foot outside this house unless I say otherwise. Understood?"
"Great. Keep me updated on her progress. Have fun." He smiled before he disappeared in a puff of crimson smoke.
Jinu's attention went back to her vomit on the floor. He grabbed some cleaning supplies, cleaned her mess.
She wasn't going to speak to him. He knew she wouldn't accept anything from him. She'll be feral almost. He needed to tire that out of her before he would make any kind of progress. Whether he would be training her to be a minion for Gwi-ma or something else, he hasn't decided. He just knew right now, he had to get through this barrier.
He carried her body to a new room that was more like a holding cell. The walls were even padded lightly. All that the room had was a small bathroom that only had a toilet inside and a small cot with a pillow and a clean sheet. He had changed her clothes to a plain cream toned night gown that had thin straps, revealing her patterns all on her arms. He laid her on the cot. He thought of strapping her down but he decided against it. He tucked her in and closed the door, locking it behind him going against using demon magic for now.
Rumi's eyes opened, that nauseating feeling coming back. She sat up, trying to rub her head to ease the tension.
She opened her eyes, looking around the room. She slumped back into her pillow after realizing shes just in a new prison. She got up, walked carefully trying not to fall over as her legs still felt like jelly. She turned the handle to the door and wasn't surprised it was locked. She looked at the other door in the room and decided to check it out but felt it too was locked.
She walked over to the corner of the room and sat down, pulling her knees to her chest, resting her head on them. She decided she didn't want to think about anything at that moment.
Jinu waited until the next morning to check in on her. He braced himself for a fight, a sneak attack maybe but to his surprise, she was asleep on the floor at the end of the room. Of course.
He unlocked the bathroom door, placed a water bottle and a sandwich at the end of the cot. She woke up to the sound.
"You need to hydrate and eat."
She sat up but kept a firm grip over her knees staring at him.
He sighed, walked over and dropped on one knee to level himself with her.
"Look at me, I won't say it twice." He warned.
Her eyes snapped up at him, fire blazing in them. He loved it.
"Good. Before anything begins to happen here, talking about what will be expected to happen or anything, you're going to do as I say and let me heal you. You will drink and eat what I give you or I will gladly find other ways to feed you. It can be by force or I'll strap your ass to a table and put a feeding tube in you. So I'll give you a choice. Get up, drink some water and eat, or leave it to me to get it done for you." He stood up, now towering high over her and extended his hand.
She stared up at him, wanting to tear him apart. She didn't even want to get better, why did he give a shit? He watched her battle in her head for a moment before she rose up on her own, ignoring his hand. She tried to march to the cot but her weak legs failed her and she stumbled. He caught her by the elbow with his hand and ignore her as she tried to yank it away.
"Don't fight me or you'll be restrained." He simply said. He led her to the cot where he let go and let her sit on her own. He reached for the water bottle and opened it for her, handing it over to her.
"Are you gonna watch me drink it?" She mumbled.
"Yes. And watch you eat too." He leaned against the wall, crossing his arms.
"Why am I here Jinu? What is this?"
"As I said, we're gonna get you feeling better first. No questions until then."
She rolled her eyes, sighing before taking a sip of water. It was so ice cold, she didn't realize how thirsty she was and ended up taking a large gulp.
"Eat."
"I'm not hungry."
"You really wanna test me? Your stomach growled all morning it almost shook the damn house. You need to eat."
She was frustrated but complied, picking up the turkey sandwich.
"It's just something to fill your stomach. When you feel better you can have bigger meals. But we'll talk about that after you're better."
This time she stayed silent and ate the sandwich quietly. Neither of them said another word until she finished. He explained the bathroom rules to her, again surprised that she complied and used it when he told her to before locking it.
He left her after that and came back later that night with another sandwich and water. This repeated for days. Rumi never spoke a word. He would ask her how she felt, forcing an answer out of her with threats. Usually that was the only way to get her to cooperate. She really didn't like the feeling of being tied down and over powered she did whatever she could to avoid it. He noticed that about her quickly. Each time she said she still felt weak. It would take Jinu another few days to realize she wasn't being honest. He had told her once she was better he'd bring her to a better room, give her better food and give her answers. But for some reason, she didn't want it. He decided to confront her about it, having enough of her antics when he heard a sound outside her door. He placed his ear against it, trying to hear what the sound was.
Crying.
Rumi was curled up on the floor in the corner of the room sobbing into her hands. She lost it all. She fought and lost. Fought again and lost again. She was out of fight, lost her purpose and that was the most terrifying part now. She was lost, she had no way out and no where to go. She couldn't even take her own life if she tried. Jinu already threatened her about it. She was stuck and all she wanted was her family back. She didn't know when she started crying but once she started she couldn't stop. She sobbed heavily into her hands, not hearing the door open.
He scooped her into his arms, cradling her into his chest. She opened her eyes and started to push away but he held her tighter. She didn't fight and just caved in, sobbing into his chest. The comfort was familiar and safe and it was the first sense of security she felt in so long. Since the last time he held her on the rooftops. She was furious for caving in but she needed his touch. He rubbed her head, cooing to her, soothing her as she cried.
"There you go, let it all out." He spoke calmly, softly into her ear.
She continued to cry until her throat hurt. Her eyes were sore, even as she closed them, exhausted. He stood there on the floor with her, her cradled in his lap, her head in his chest. He pressed his lips to the crown of her head.
"I'm sorry Rumi." He whispered. He could take her out of here, away from this room, this house, from Gwi-ma, far from everyone who hurt her. He could release her secretly, help her find her friends and find peace.
Instead he found himself lifting her up and placing her on the cot, tucked her in and quickly left the room.
Chapter 5: The Conference
Notes:
I just want to tell you guys first thank you so much for enjoying this story! This chapter would have been posted 2 days ago but I made the mistake of typing straight here and not another software. Our power went out and bam, lost the whole chapter as I am also on a desktop! I cried, had a meltdown because I legit was one sentence away from the end. So after a break, taking my anger out on a game of Oblivion, I decided to sacrifice sleep a night before a 3am call time for work. I hope you enjoy this!
Chapter Text
Jinu had gotten dressed in more formal attire than he usual has been lately. Usually, his time with Rumi didn’t require any form of fancy wear.
What would even be the attire of a captor? Is it just villain clothes? Maybe I should don a fucking staff.
However, he received a message at his door calling for a meeting at noon in Gwi-mas conference room at his estate. Jinu has gotten a little kick at this modernized version of Gwi-ma. He found himself almost laughing at the ridiculousness of it. Gwi-ma took to his King Mafia style of running this empire very seriously and damn if he wasn’t good at it. He was a smooth talker to the humans, even managing to keep some on staff, though not without a soul eating price.
Gwi-ma also is a stickler for presentation. Baby showed up to a meeting in a tank top and Gwi-ma nearly exploded back to his original form with how much he was steaming.
“IS THIS JUST A JOKE TO YOU INSUFFERABLE IDIOTS?!”
Abby and Romance were struggling with every fiber of their beings to keep it themselves from breaking out in hysteric fits of laughter. Even Jinu couldn’t help himself from biting his bottom lip and turning his face away to avoid making eye contact with anyone. Only thing that amused him more was the other demons in the room who aren’t quite as used to Gwi-ma and were staring at the whole interaction with wide eye horror.
So, lesson learned. He wore a crisp black button-down shirt, slim fit black pants and a black blazer over. He opted out of the vest; it wasn’t a damn wedding. He put on his black boots and an amethyst color ring on his right pointer finger.
He had grabbed a tray of food prepared for Rumi along with a bin. He entered her room and ignored the fact she was on the floor in the corner sleeping with her head on her knees. This had been going on for a week now. He even threatened to tie her down and she stopped for one night but went back to the floor the next day. She doesn’t talk to him or answer him when he speaks to her. She only eats because she isn’t willing to test his bluff on a feeding tube. He decided to be lenient and let her sulk. He had hoped by now she had started to have a little acceptance, maybe try not to hate her inner demon so much. He wasn’t sure how to help her through that any easier than how she was dealing with it. Its not like he was loving himself, who was he to try to tell her it wasn’t so bad.
I told her all we’ll ever be are monsters. Why did I say that?
Jinu stopped himself from questioning his thoughts any further. He has been trying to distract himself by just sitting in the room with Rumi, even though neither say a word for hours. He often just glanced at her, studying every single inch of her face, her dark circles that were getting more prominent by the day. Her eyes still seemed to mesmerized him even now. Her hair was still awfully choppy below her collarbone, which now seemed to take on a frizzy wavy texture due to lack of upkeep. He was more bothered by the blotchy black hair dye she messily lathered her amethyst toned hair. Even some of those purple strands stand out a little almost making it seem like its shimmering at times. He realized he hadn’t offered her much. It was also to help her become less resistant as time would go by, like self-acceptance but she hasn’t budged. She won’t even cry or beg. He couldn’t quite understand why it bothered him so much. Couldn’t she see he was only trying to help her?
As he placed the tray at the end of the cot, he opened the lid of the small bin on the floor to reveal some damp steamed washcloths and a change of clothes he had taken from her room.
“I’m sorry I don’t have a sink in here for you but I had these done before I came in here so they’re fresh. You can clean yourself down and maybe we can talk later about a proper bath.” His emotionless voice cut through the tension in the air.
Rumi lifted her head, already awake when he opened the door. She noticed him now, not in the same old sweats he’s been wearing everyday with her. But dressed to impress. It pissed her off how she immediately felt butterflies at the sight of him. Why did he still have to look like that? She looked at the tray and noticed it held not just one sandwich and one bottle of water. He had 2 bottles, a sandwich and a small bowl of steamed rice.
“Somewhere to be?” Her voice cracked as she spoke, being that she hadn’t said much of anything since the night she sobbed in his arms.
“Gwi-ma has set up a meeting for us. Usually, these things run long but you were unconscious during the last one so I didn’t have to worry much. But in case he has us there until tonight I have a little extra food.”
“Oh, how sweet. Dressed to the nines for master, are we?” Even in her raspy low weak voice, it carried so much malice in her words it nearly made the hairs stand on his neck. He has never heard such coldness in her before.
“Do not call him that.” He warned.
“Why not? Isn’t that what he is to you? He gives his command and like his little slave there you go.”
“You don’t understand I had no other choice. If it wasn’t me it would have been worse.”
“Bullshit, I escaped! You could have let me go but your master calls and there you go dragging me back!” She stood up immediately regretting doing it so fast feeling a surge of pain throughout all her joints. She hid the pain by holding on to her anger towards Jinu which she thought she managed to hide it well. His smirk proved otherwise however.
“If I didn’t bring you back after that stupid escape plan you had, which might I say, brilliant. First place you went was your old home, yeah no one would have seen that coming.”
Rumi angrily glared at his sarcastic comment as he continued.
“Then you get injured, you bleed and guess what! We can sense blood, especially YOUR blood. It’s the same blood patterns we all have and we can see where one of us is if we wanted to, and as Gwi-ma demands, many wanted to. Plus, on top of that, you are in piss poor shape. You did a shit job at patching yourself up and lost a lot of blood and had I not found you when I did, it could have gotten infected. A damn child would have been able to take you out. Then you got yourself stoned and drunk on top of it? How stupid can you be?”
She didn’t care about her pain, she lunged at him. She swung left, right, kick, swing, uppercut. All blocked by Jinu with very little effort. It was insulting to her which angered her more. She was glowing, her eyes burning embers. At the last swing he had decided he had enough and grabbed her wrists holding them above her head as he slammed her against the wall, pressing his body against hers to calm her damn. With his other hand he grabbed her face and forced her to look at him.
“I have had enough. You can fight all you want but all you are doing is making things harder and harder and harder. Not on me, only on you. And whether you believe me or not, I am trying to keep you safe from them. You don’t have to like it, you don’t have to want it. But you need to get over it and accept it. Next time you try to attack me I will strap you down and blindfold and gag you for hours and I will not lose sleep over it. Do you understand?” He spoke through gritted teeth, his face was lowered down, inches away from her face. She couldn’t look away even if she tried since he held her firm. She hated to admit it but she couldn’t fight him. Not like this anyways. It killed her to submit but she had no other choice. She closed her eyes and nodded in his hand.
“Use your words. I need to hear it.” He demanded.
“Yes.”
“Good girl.”
He loosened his grip on her wrists but didn’t let go just yet. He let go of her face first, his fingers softly grazing her jaw as he dropped his hand.
“Rumi…”He breathed.
She opened her eyes to look at him and was stunned at the change in his face. He was pleading. She hadn’t seen that face of his in a long time now. She held her breath, almost melting in his hands.
Why did he have to have those eyes…
He was still undeniably beautiful to her. Now with his eyes seeming so human right now, she dropped her guard for a brief moment. Because as quick as it was suddenly there, Jinu softened, tired, silently begging, it was gone. He let her go and stormed out of the room, locking it behind him. She stared at the closed door for some time, still not sure what to think.
“What the fuck?”
Jinu had been right to give her extra food. They had been there for hours. Gwi-ma spoke to the lesser of his minions first, addressing nonsense matters. He had recruited many new faces and had them in so many forms of business industries. He decided to keep Abby, Baby and Romance in the music industry to keep his hold there. Mystery however, like Jinu opted out for the music works. Jinu never thought much of it since he and Mystery never really clicked. He was a demon he didn’t interact with as much and really was there as a voice and muscle. It helped that he had the look as well. Jinu had gotten pretty well acquainted with the others though. It gave him a sense of belonging he hadn’t felt in centuries. He respected them and enjoyed their company. He felt guilty not talking to them about his true feelings or Rumi. He wasn’t even entirely sure how much of that they knew but if they did know anything, they did a good job keeping their mouths shut about it with him. He was thankful for it, he wasn’t sure it was a conversation he was willing to have.
As the time went by, Jinu struggled to keep himself from zoning out. What helped was Baby’s childish antics of throwing paper planes he made out of post it notes and stealthily launching them at Jinu. Each time he glanced at Baby he was met with a kiss face from him which he returned with a silent “fuck off” or flipped him the finger when no one was looking. After each individual was dealt with, they left the room. Finally, there was no one else besides two of Gwi-mas new muscle men, his new accountant and the Saja Boys.
“Alright. I saved the best for last. Now, Baby and Romance. I like that you guys have been doing some solo things I think its working perfectly. The manager tells me numbers are still skyrocketing since the lack of competition is making it easier now.” He laughed to himself. “Well, I was advised that you reached a good amount of popularity you can even consider doing some film and television works. Break out to the acting industry. Many musicians do this I’ve been told. Keep us growing. Understood?”
“Yeah, I guess I can be a cool rom-com kind of guy.” Baby fluffed his turquoise locks.
“Maybe just the com part.” Romance poked his ear with a pencil.
“Screw off, Neo.” Baby swatted the pencil out of his hand.
Gwi-ma rolled his eyes and his attention now went to Jinu. “Now about our special guest you’ve been holding on to for me. Mystery and I have been chatting and he had an interesting idea. The girl is strong for a half-blooded demon. It’s a shame I cannot get into her head as I can with all my other children. Though I do believe strongly that had I been the one to raise her instead of that Sunlight woman I would have been able to hold something remarkable. But here we are. I have options. Break her in to joining my empire and helping me bring in more souls. Or, Mysterys idea. Having another chance at potentially raising a powerful hybrid army. “
Jinus eyes had widened as the realization settled in. He stood up quickly. “You’re gonna breed her?!” He shouted.
“Why don’t you tell him who gets to father these demonic half-bloods.” Mystery said, smiling at Jinu. It added more fuel to the fire.
“No.” Jinu shook his head.
“No? Why so? You think you are more qualified?” Mystery mocked him.
“You can’t have her.” Jinus voice started deepen more than it already was. His eyes turning into demon form.
“Now, it makes sense Jinu. After all, Mystery is elder than you. I haven’t had to fix some things in his head as I had to with you. Hes a perfect candidate here.” Gwi-ma added.
“NO YOU’RE WRONG!” Jinu shouted.
Now it was Gwi-ma who slowly rose up. His demon colors shining from his eyes to his skin. He wasn’t happy.
“Are you insinuating I am lying, boy?” Gwi-ma said it not as a question but as threat nearly.
Jinu was infuriated. But he needed to clam down. Fighting Gwi-ma is a battle he isn’t ready for especially on this subject. He already lost once. But now this, he was over his head with his talking back right now. So he collected himself and turned his full focus on Gwi-ma. He kept the aggression in his tone yet more calm.
“No sir. Not lying. But wrong to go about it like this. Right now, that girl is in a horrible state physically and mentally. Most women who go into pregnancies struggle to keep the baby healthy and alive, if you added a mentally unwell person who is forced to have a pregnancy, they don’t want its never gonna work. Most times the fetus won’t live if the mother isn’t well physically. She needs to be in a better state of mind and since your last request to me was to “Break her” its not gonna work forcing her into this especially with someone she doesn’t even know. You have a better shot at getting her to join your empire but she needs time. Besides, in your care sir she had escaped and went passed all your men including Mystery here who was within the walls at the time of her escape. I found her, I brought her back and since then…shes still where I last left her.”
“Dude why do you know so much about pregnancies?” Baby asked.
Gwi-ma seemed to relax, returning to his humanized appearance. “Okay, that makes sense. You may even almost be right. So I’ll tell you what. I have some matters to tend to so I will be out for a few days. So when I return, bring her to me. Make sure she’s properly comfortable as well. That was all. You’re all dismissed.”
“Hey, sir…where is Abby?” Baby asked.
It was then that Jinu noticed they were one Saja Boy member down. Gwi-ma exchanged a glance with Mystery that Jinu noted to not forget. He smiled at the boys quickly after. “Abby is on an important task for me. Its between us so no more questions. Dismissed.”
With that, Gwi-ma teleported in his crimson smoke and was gone. Mystery rose up now adjusting his black coat.
“Whats the matter Jinu? You don’t wanna share?”
“Mystery, relax whats your deal?” Romance asked.
“Nothing. Just Jinu being a little unfair. Keeping that exquisite little half blood siren all to himself. Didn’t think I’d ever noticed? I kept my mouth shut to the guys while you sent her little love notes and all your secret meetings. You definitely almost gave it all up for her. You’re too weak to be the man she needs. But don’t worry, in time Gwi-ma will see my worth. Believe me when I say, she will be my prize for it all. And I’ll make sure I’ll fuck-“
Before he could finish his sentence, Jinu couldn’t listen anymore. In a blink of an eye, Jinus blade emerged in his hand and he split the conference table in half, shattered it to large chunks that exploded in the room. Baby and Mystery dodged the incoming debris by disappearing and reappearing after the blow. By then Jinu was launched already through the table and was inches away from Mystery, his blade pushed into his throat, slicing light into his skin. Mystery grunted in the pain but smiled at Jinu before disappearing in black smoke.
Jinu was fuming but the source of his anger now gone, he was forced to calm down. Romance and Baby had nothing to do with what was happening and he will not take his anger out on them. He didn’t even flinch when Baby put his hand on his shoulder.
“Wow. I just know Gwi-ma is gonna either laugh at this or hes gonna send you a bill that is probably more than the actual table.”
“Or maybe hell have you come build it yourself.” Romance added.
“Maybe he’ll make another one out of Mystery.” Jinu mumbled. Baby and Romance chuckled.
“Hey man, you okay?” Romance asked.
Jinu turned to look at them, seeing real worry on their faces. They did care about him and he knew it. But he couldn’t talk to them about anything. He didn’t even know what to say.
“I’m fine.”
“Look you don’t have to say anything but if you need anything, even with this situation…if you need us to do anything…we got you.”
Romance gave him a knowing look and Jinu may have understood but he just simply smiled and nodded at him. As he was getting ready to leave, Baby called out.
“Hey, if you hear from Abby, can you let us know?”
“Yeah, I will. If you hear from him let me know too.”
They all nodded and disappeared from the damaged room.
Jinu opened the door to Rumi’s room to collect the food tray and check on her. He wasn’t sure if he wasn’t surprised to see everything, he left her untouched or more irritated at the fact she was back on the floor, still a mess. She never touched the wash cloths or changed her clothes.
“Really?” He sighed, frustrated into his hand.
“Fuck off.” She mumbled.
“Fine. You don’t wanna take care of yourself? Fine.”
She let out s squeak yelp as he pulled her up from the floor and thew her over his shoulder.
“Really?!” She shrieked.
He ignored the slap she gave the back of his head and stormed out of the room. She didn’t fight much but cursed him out as he walked up the basement stairs, manevering through the dark interior. Rumi couldn’t make much out since the lights were all out and assumed he just knew his way through the house. They went up a second level of stairs and he only put her down when he reached a bathroom. He turned on the lights and placed her on the toilet.
“I am going to bathe you. I will only remove your clothes and clean you and nothing more. If you resist, I will bind you if I have to. Understood?”
“Yes.” She angrily said.
He nodded in approval and went to setting up the tub. After he filled it with water, she noticed he added some oil into the water. She also noticed how large the tub was. She was almost resistant to Jinu when he started to remove her shirt. Its when he started to go “ah ah, what did I say?” when she angrily stopped. He removed her clothes as respectfully as he could and then helped her into the tub. He used his hands to apply the soap and lather her body one limb at a time. He massaged her joints and as much as she wanted to scream, she couldn’t help but close her eyes at the massive amount of relief she felt. It was overwhelming to the point she actually closed her eyes and passed out. He used the opportunity to clean her more intimate parts gently without the awkward tension they both would have experienced. He just wanted to get her clean. She needed it. Not just for hygienic reasons but he needed to remind her about the pleasures he can offer her if she stops fighting. Maybe this will be better? He felt ridiculous trying to justify his role as her captor. So instead, he again shut down his thoughts, finished washing her hair thankful to see some of the black had rinsed. Not all but it was definitely a cheap brand she bought as a temporarily solution.
So stupid.
He thought her actions were dumb of course but he didn’t deny they were justifiable. He carried her out of the tub and took her to his bedroom. He laid her on her bed and dressed her with a pair of white cotton panties and a pastel pink night dress he had left for her in the bin had she used it. They were hers.
He contemplated tying her to the bed, unable to trust her yet. He decided to take some padded shackles he had prepared and connected them to her wrists and locking them to the headboard which had small bars that were decorative but convenient for this.
She actually looked better already just with the bath and fresh clothes alone. He stroked her cheek gently, his thumb tracing around her cheek. Why did this have to be this way?
Why am I still living through this hell?~
He sighed. He wanted to get up to finish cleaning up but he couldn’t pull himself away from her. It was an endless torture he didn’t want to give up just yet.
Chapter 6: The Saja Boy
Chapter Text
Rumi opened her eyes feeling very well rested. Something she hasn’t felt in quite some time. Her body still sore, but not nearly as bad as it’s felt within the last few weeks. She went to rub her forehead, her fingers grazing her skin before a slight tug. She glanced up to see the shackles, sighing in annoyance.
Of course.
Well rested and still captive. A while ago, she would have been freaking out. She would have fought tooth and nail to never be in this position. To be captured and imprisoned by not only demons but Gwi-ma himself. Sure, Jinu was the one she mainly sees but for how long?
She also wasn’t entirely sure which she would prefer to be around. Gwi-ma terrified her. She was raised on stories about him, the brutality he inflicted on others. He never showed any mercy then and she knew he sure as hell won’t be showing any now. She knew he had plans for her but what they were, she didn’t know. But it was easy to hate Gwi-ma. She can be in his presence and despise him, waste no time in thinking of a million ways she can try to kill him or at least just cause him pain. It would be the best way for her to pass time.
Its easy to hate Gwi-ma…and it is so damn hard to hate Jinu. She was so sure with every piece of her heart she was doing the right thing in investing her faith, her hope, her heart into Jinu. She felt their bond, she felt their connection, she found her voice again with him. He was the first to truly see her for who she was and not show fear or hate.
Like Zoey and Mira did…
Her eyes started to well up at the thought of her lost sisters. In the end, she rather herself in this situation then either of them. Even if they did hate her.
“Finally awake?” Jinus voice almost made her jump. She hadn’t heard him at all or notice he had even been in the room.
“How long was I asleep?”
“Two days.”
“TWO DAYS? You could have at least taken these off!” She shrieked.
“I did. I even attempted to wake you but after that, I knew you really needed this. Cuffs only went on when I wasn’t home.” Jinu walked over to the bed, sitting beside her.
“So why are these on now?”
“I was coming to take them off. I just got back.” He said as he leaned in to uncuff her.
She sat up, rubbing her shoulders since they were held up for a few hours. She glanced over at Jinu, who she now noticed his face. To say he looked exhausted was an understatement. He didn’t look like himself at all. She almost wondered even if it was him.
“Jinu…” She whispered.
He caught her eye at the sound of his name. She wasn’t just saying his name. She was looking for him. He wanted to answer but felt himself nearly choke at the thought of it. He shook his head, ignored her and stood up. He placed some clothes at the bed. She recognized them instantly.
“What, did you raid my dresser as I was tied up somewhere?”
“No. I raided it while you probably getting yourself high.”
“You don’t have to keep reminding me.”
He watched her for a moment as she brought the pair of jeans and sweater towards her lap. He watched her eyes flicker as she probably was remembering the last time she wore that sweater. He wasn’t able to free her right now, but there was no harm in laying it on the table. The least he can do was be honest.
“Rumi, I have to tell you something.” He avoided her gaze the moment she looked up at him.
“Something to do with the soirée at your masters?”
“Fine I’ll just keep it to myself and let you be surprised.” He pretended to turn to the door.
“Wait, just tell me!” She wanted to kick herself again for being so annoyingly weak.
“No more master jokes.” He warned.
She nodded.
“Words.”
“I won’t make the jokes anymore.” She sighed.
“Good girl. Alright. Gwi-ma wants to see you. I have no idea what he even wants to say to you, but hes probably going to try to convince you to work for him.” Jinu went back to the bed, grabbing Rumis hands and holding them firmly, ignoring the light tug she attempted.
“Rumi please…whatever you do…do not upset him. Don’t push his buttons. I don’t care how pathetic and weak you feel as you do it, just do it. You seen how he treats the women demons; he wouldn’t hesitate to hurt you. Not kill you, he would make sure of that. But hurt you, there are many ways he can do that and I know I’ve seen it happen. So swallow that fucking pride and get dressed.”
He got up left the room, locking it behind him. She held her breath the entire time he spoke to her, focused on his emotionless face as he begged her. Something just isn’t right about him, not in the way she thought. Had Gwi-ma did something to his head?
Jinu entered the room again in 15 minutes. Rumi had put on the high waisted light blue jeans and an offer the should pastel pink sweater she had only worn in private or just with Celine. He did love the way it complimented her skin and patterns. If her hair was untouched, she would have reminded him of a rose quartz and amethyst stones together. But at least some of the purple shown through. It was almost starting to grow on him. Especially now that she left it loose. The soft waves seemed to show more among the choppy layers she hastily made. She looked like a perfect rockstar rather than a k-pop idol.
As he got closer, she saw what was in his hands and she groaned.
“No come on, I won’t do anything.”
“It’s not my choice or yours. Please.”
She groaned again as he grabbed her wrist and placed them in the tight shackles, demon runes appearing around them once locked in.
“Whats this?” She asked, nervously eyeing the symbols.
“It suppresses your powers. Either that or he gags you.”
She kept her mouth shut at that. In that case, the cuffs were the lesser of two evils.
Jinu held Rumi close and teleported them to Gwi-ma’s office, right outside his doors. His assistant greeted them and led them inside. Jinu was a bit relieved to see only Gwi-ma was waiting. He wasn’t sure if Mystery would have some how gotten an invite.
Gwi-ma eyed Rumi, maliciously grinning at her as she entered with Jinu. It made her skin crawl and she couldn’t hide the scowl on her face.
“Rumi! I hope you have had a beautiful recovery! It does seem so; you look absolutely radiant. Doesn’t she Jinu?”
“Yes sir.” Jinu professionally answered. Somehow that was worse than Gwi-ma staring at her as he was.
“I should hope you think so. After all that fuss with Mystery now.”
Rumis confused expression encouraged Gwi-ma to keep going. “Yes. Seems the Saja Boys aren’t as close as the media showed I’m afraid. See, you are a very essential item that can choose to be very, very beneficial to me. If something has potential, I will nurture it and help it grow to something extraordinary. You can be that something extraordinary here Rumi. If you are willing to obey.”
“What do you mean?” She asked.
“You can join my empire. I would allow you to start small, give you a little freedom here and there. No music unfortunately as I just can’t trust those lovely pipes of yours just yet. In fact, we want the speaking to a minimum when you are out with us. It’s a better to be seen not heard kind of situation, I’m sure you understand.”
“So you just want eye candy for your clients?” Rumi asked, trying not to feel sick.
“That’s a similar way of looking at it, but to start, yes. But you must also pay attention. You still have recognition as a Huntrix. Getting to your previous contacts will be easy I am sure. You do this, you do this well. You get more freedom among us to an extent, hey…maybe I can even show you how to control your power when I deicide its right to grant it back to you. You see, I may not be able to get into your head like I can with my children here but I can control when and how you are able to use your powers. If this doesn’t sound at all appeasing to you…theres also option b. Would you like to tell her option b?” Gwi-ma looked over at Jinu.
Jinu hid his shame as he spoke to her, making sure to meet her eyes, making Gwi-ma grin even more.
“The second option was to hand you over to Mystery to have his children.” It was like ripping off a band aid. At least that’s what he was attempting to go for when he said it so quickly and matter of factly. But seeing the widened look of horror on her face made him realize there was never gonna be an easy way to say this to her.
“What?” She choked. “Jinu, what? What the actual fuck do you mean?!” She started to raise her voice. “You would let them do that to me!?”
“Of course he would. It isn’t his choice and it isn’t yours. The fact I even am allowing you to pick from the two choices is an honor you don’t even understand.
“I AM NOT A BROADMARE FOR YOU!” She turned to Gwi-ma screaming at the top of her lungs, her eyes burning even still through her suppressing restraints.
“Silence her Jinu, I’m exhausted.” Gwi-ma turned his back to make himself an alcoholic cocktail he grew fond of doing in his human state. The alcohol doesn’t get him drunk at all but he did enjoy the taste. Just as he enjoyed making Jinu humiliate Rumi as he took out black cloth Gwi-ma had him prepare and placed it over her mouth, securing it behind her head. Her eyes watering more, angrily trying to keep them in place. She was about to lose her mind until his voice, quick and silent whispered to her.
“Just stay calm, I won’t let him hurt you.”
It wasn’t just a normal whisper. It didn’t even sound like it came from Jinu. It was in her head…how? By the time she processed what was whispered to her, he had already tied the gag and firmly make her sit down in front of Gwi-ma where he now turned to face her, holding a martini in hand.
“There. Now that we’re calm, lets talk.” He sat in front of her, crossing his leg, eyeing her up and down. It was nauseating to her but she was helpless to do anything about it.
“I can be a real evil son of a bitch. I won’t even try to deny it because that’s silly, isn’t it? I’m aware of what I am and I am perfectly fine with myself. That’s the difference between you lot and me. You all have this weak little insecurity about yourselves that its so easy to pull you into whatever kind of paradise lie that’s given. I can crush them all easily. But I don’t. Because as evil as I can be…I can be generous. I can give them a life they won’t feel so miserable and worthless in. I give them promise. I give them drive. I can give you that too. Just obey me. Because if you don’t like being on the front lines with us, then get ready for motherhood.”
Rumi glared at him, her eyes still blazing.
“Now,” He held up his right hand “This is option 1. Get you on the ‘field’ I should say with us. Or,” He held up his left hand “this is option 2. You know what this is. Which is it? Don’t make me choose for you.”
Rumi shut her eyes, trying to remain calm as she nodded her head to his right hand.
“Excellent choice. Though Mystery might be heartbroken. For now, at least. We’ll see how you do. Dismissed.” He waved them out of the room.
Jinu held Rumi by the arm and teleported them back his bedroom.
He untied the gag once they were safely away from Gwi-ma. Rumi didn’t give him a chance to get to the cuffs yet.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” She spun to face him, still struggling to keep the tears in.
“I didn’t know how. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to; I didn’t think he would leave that up to me right then and there.”
“Who the hell is Mystery? A Saja Boy? Like why him? I don’t understand!”
“I don’t either.”
“You were with him all the time!”
“We barely talked! We had a job to do!” He was getting annoyed, still he lifted her hands and removed the cuffs and braced himself for whatever hits she most likely will be inflicting on him.
“Have children…he’s a monster!” she clutched at her head, trying to process everything she held back in that office.
“You won’t have to if you just- “
“Sell my soul?! Bring people straight to him for his own soul buffet? No! I can’t do this; I need to get out of here I can’t”
Jinu grabbed her arms to stop her from pacing as she had started to do.
“I won’t be a monster, Jinu.” She was tired. He saw it in her eyes, felt it in her blood. She didn’t want to keep fighting them. But there was something else. He felt a spark of hope in her too. It was amazing to him how she could even have a little left.
She’s just far stronger than she knows.
“Are you sure this is it?” Baby eyed the very colorful small cottage nestled in the forest hours away from the city they resided.
“Yes. Spoke to her already.” Romance muttered.
“Before Baby can ask another question, the door opened and there stood a tiny elderly woman who warmly smiled at them.
“You must be Abbys friends! You must be Romance, with that lovely hair!” She smiled at his heart shaped mane.
“Yes, and this is Baby.”
“Please come in, I have tea brewing right now, if you need a break from collecting his things!” She said as she led them to a room down the hall.
“Thank you, Miss Seong. We will come have some shortly, we will be quick.”
She left them alone as they entered the dark room. Romance turned the light on where he saw the bed was made nicely. The room seemed cleaned with various belongings of Abbys thrown about.
“How long had he been here?” Baby aksed.
“He came the same week Gwi-ma and Celine made the deal, like a few days after. Still hasn’t checked out but she told me he hadn’t returned in about a week. He would be gone for a day and would let her know but this time hes not answered her. She didn’t wanna keep charging him for the rental so she found my number on the emergency contact he left.” Romance answered, thinking back to the unexpected call he got from Ms Seong. He admitted it gave a little relief thinking he found Abby, ready to let him have it for disappearing but of course his relief was short lived.
Something was off about how Gwi-ma and Mystery have been about Abbys absence and Jinu genuinely doesn’t seem to know but he has his own problems.
“Hey, a phone.” Baby held up an old android phone.
“What is that? It looks ancient.” Romance commented as he went closer to inspect.
“Its not his usual one, maybe there’s something inside?”
“Is it locked?”
Baby tried to swipe to see if the phone required a passcode but to his surprise it opened immediately. Only one app was there besides the phone call option and it was a gallery folder. Baby opened it to see one video filmed by Abby.
Both men took a seat on the bed, Romance shoving Baby.”
“There is no need to aim for my lap.” Romance shrugged him off.
“I’m cold.”
“Shut up.”
Romance tilted the phone sideways allowing the screen to be covered by Abby who sat on the bed they currently were on, phone placed on the desktop next to hold the phone for him. Romance the little triangle to play.
“Hey guys. Uh, I don’t know how exactly is the way to say it so I’m just gonna say it and hope this doesn’t ever have to be played but if you are seeing this then it turns out Gwi-ma figured me out. Everything’s a mess…gosh. I thought we just had to stop the Huntrix from sealing the Honmoon. I’ll be honest. I think being one of the Saja Boys with you guys’ kind cured something in me. I can’t explain it but I know it just felt good to have brothers like you guys. I didn’t wanna hurt anyone anymore because I wasn’t hurting so bad which saying it out loud sounds like an asshole thing to say but we’re demons. Its in the description, I guess. Well, after all that happened with Gwi-ma ending the Huntrix and capturing Rumi, I just felt like there was a shift. Gwi-ma was never gonna let us be free, even after he made that deal and hes enjoying human life while destroying it. I tried talking to Jinu first but he wasn’t the same. He was like this hallowed out shell. It was him but its not…I asked Mystery and then I realized while talking to Mystery…he never really was one of us, was he? He just fit the role as best as he can for Gwi-ma. He loves hurting people. Even as hes happy, he loves it. So I did some digging. Gwi-ma told Jinu he would erase his memories of his human life if he did as he was told. But he started to fall for Rumi. I think its fair to say we all saw that. Unfortunately, so did Mystery. So he decided to use it to his advantage. He poisoned Celines mind, was able to somehow do that alone with her, convinced her to make the deal with Gwi-ma. This earned him some high points. So Gwi-ma threw his deal with Jinu and instead, when he saw Jinu plotting to betray him, he got in his head and stripped all his humanity. Its like whatever soul he had that was coming back to life with Rumi, Gwi-ma destroyed it. At least he did most of it. Theres still a piece of him left but I have no ide how to get him back. Or if its even possible to be honest. I wanted to do this alone because…you both are terrible liars. You especially Baby. I don’t want Gwi-ma to do to you what he did to Jinu. I wanted to try to figure this out so maybe we would have a chance to get Jinu back and hey, maybe even help Rumi escape. The Huntrix weren’t so bad. I did a lot of terrible things in my lifetime. I was no better as a demon. I wanted to fix it all so maybe…I can have a chance to see my mom again. I still remember her voice.....um. Sorry, just give me a second, ha. Wasn’t trying to get emotional here so don’t fry me. Mystery found me out, hes promised that he and Gwi-ma will work something out with me but I highly doubt that will be a promotion. I was able to find a phone number I have it written on a card inside the nightstand. I never got to have this talk to you guys so I hope you are on the same page as I. I hope we still have a chance, even now. If so, whatever you can do, be safe and do not trust Mystery. Save Jinu. Try to survive for me, okay?”
The video ended, and Romance and Baby had been still.
“Abby…hes not dead. Right?” Baby ran his hand through his hair, his voice almost cracked.
Romance squeezed his eyes. Abby was right. They did feel peace as Saja Boys. They did find a connection with each other. They did care about Jinu as their elder brother. They did even enjoy the Huntrix when they weren’t trying to beat them to the ground.
He took a deep breath and stood up, walking to the nightstand where Abby had instructed and there indeed was a card to a ramen shop with a phone number scribbled on the back with a name followed by skull with bones symbol. Abby loved drawing those just because he can make the skull well detailed and tiny.
“I guess that’s a warning?” Romance commented.
“Boys, are you ready for some tea?” Ms. Seongs voice called out.
“Come on. We’ll talk about this on the way back. Let’s have some tea.”
Chapter Text
Rumi sat at the large dining table, zoned out as she stared at the plate of food before her. It was covered with some of the most exquisite looking food you would see in a luxury high end restaurant. She wasn’t even sure what most of it was. In her previous life, she had often chosen to go towards comfort food with her Huntrix sisters. They used to laugh how people though people would assume they ate healthier simpler meals, things you would expect of a pop star. But the girls loved their cakes, snacks and ramen.
She didn’t realize how long she had even sat there, not touching her food. She did make sure not to completely check out, she alerted herself once her name was spoken. Her eyes darted to Mystery who sat on the opposite side of the table, close to the head which of course was Gwi-ma.
“I guess Jino is feeding you well, so well you won’t even touch your meal. Whats the matter little bird? Afraid its poisoned?” He smiled.
“I have no appetite.” She muttered. It was true. She knew she should probably try to eat something but truth is, ever since she was given a role in Gwi-mas ridiculous empire as a captive, she hasn’t even felt human anymore. Jinu had attempted to find ways to make her appreciate where she stood to them but it didn’t work. She’d call him a stupid puppet, they fight, he storms off leaving her alone. That’s been her week so far.
Today she was forced to sit down to a dinner with Gwi-ma and some people he felt worthy to sit in his presence. She knew it was a test. To see how hard she can be pushed, humiliated, how obedient she actually was. She decided for now, she’d just grin and bare it. Or at least just bare it. She doesn’t even remember the last time she smiled.
“Tsk tsk. Now that doesn’t seem very grateful does it?” Mystery sipped his wine, keep his eyes locked on hers. She felt every malicious intent through his gaze. It sickened her.
“Shes full. Drop it.” Jinu snapped. He had sat in silence as well, already annoyed from his argument with Rumi hours earlier.
“So you wanna dress me like his fucking doll now?!” She screamed, throwing the sheer white gown at Jinu.
“No! I just wanna get through this as quick and easy as possible! Its just a dress Rumi, what else do you want me to do?”
“LET. ME. GO!” She shouted, her voice nearly shaking the house.
He had to calm her down by force after that which of course only made things more tense between them. So he tried to compromise.
“Neither of us likes this okay? Hate me all you want. But can we just give him less fuel to play with fire? Please?”
She hated herself for giving in to his dark eyes, his human eyes that made her heart flutter. It almost made her think that maybe hes just as much as a captive as she is. But she quickly removed the thought but gave in to the fight. She put on the strapless white flowy dress that was sheer all throughout her legs. She was thankful for the white briefs she was able to wear underneath. The dress was beautiful but she didn’t wanna give them the satisfaction.
So there they sat. Jinu, Mystery, Gwi-ma, and 3 other high ranking demons Jinu didn’t bother learning about.
“That’s okay Mystery. Afterall, our dear Rumi has gone through a new change in her life. Lost her singing career, no family of her own. Tragic isn’t it? I am more than understanding, if she is unable to eat due to her emotions then who am I to be upset? What kind of leader would I be to tear her down at this difficult time?” Gwi-ma didn’t even bother to look at her as he spoke condescendingly about her. Her hands tightened into fists on her lap, her nails piercing into her palms.
“True. Doesn’t help to teach her some respect though. But that’s just me.” He shrugged, flashing a smile at Jinu.
“If you have something you want to say…”Jinu started.
“Nothing at all. Just observing.”
“Observe in your fucking head then.” Jinus demon eyes flashed.
Rumi was surprised to hear him speak up against Mystery for her. With Gwi-ma he almost lets him say whatever he wants. So, seeing him standup to Mystery was almost like a relief. He wasn’t completely gone.
No more words were exchanged until the men finished their food.
“Rumi, tomorrow morning we fly to a meeting in Tokyo. You and Jinu will come, sit. One of your previous industry people will be attending. Speak to him, offer an opportunity to work with us for Baby and Romance. See if they have any other upcoming talent that we can use as well. You do well, you get rewarded.” Gwi-ma spoke.
“Rewarded?” She asked. “With what?”
“Well, it can be a new little dress. It can be an outing maybe. Or maybe a treat. We will-“
“A phone. I want my phone back.” She blurted out. Her phone had been taken after the abduction but she never thought about it. Having it back will make her feel a little sense of herself again.
“What would you need that for?” Gwi-ma laughed. “You have all you need here now.”
“Its not just for calls. Please. Its probably not even in service right now but I just want it. Just to look through, my pictures, my apps, my playlists…please.” She spilled her plea hoping to find just a shred of compassion.
“We shall see. Jinu, take her back. Make sure she gets rest and make sure to explain the importance of proper verbiage.”
With that, Gwi-ma disappeared. Mystery was starting to say something to her when she suddenly felt Jinu grab her arm and saw a flash of purple and they were back in Jinus home.
“Could have at least warned me you were gonna do that.” Rumi said, her vision refocusing after the sudden teleportation.
“Sorry. Just didn’t wanna hear Mysterys mouth.”
“Fair point.” She sat down on the couch rubbing her temples. Jinu had returned from his room with a pair of sweat pants and a black t-shirt showing a dancing pizza slice. It was a shirt not only from her room, but it was a shirt she had stolen secretly from Mira.
She bit her lip trying not to get emotional but was thankful for the clothes. She didn’t hesitate and rose to the bathroom to change. She splashed her face with water. Her reflection showed her the truth she tried to forget. She was exhausted, she was miserable, she was mentally drained. All that from just a gaze. No more glamour. No more passion. No more.
She shut the light, heading back to the living area when she was greeted by Jinu holding a cup of her favorite thing, ramen.
“I know you like the other brand but this was all I was able to find on short notice. If you want, give me a list and I’ll get whatever food you want. Its not the same but let me try to find something that makes you feel more at home.”
She stood still, staring at how pathetic he just looked to her. He was guilty and it weighed on him hard. She knows, shes been beating him up for it every chance she could. But tonight, she was too tired.
She reluctantly took the warm ramen from him, the spices immediately hitting her in a soft spot.
“My home will make me feel at home Jinu.” She said quietly.
The morning came. Jinu woke Rumi up at 430am. She normally was okay with early wake up calls, it was something she had been used to for a while. It almost made her feel normal as she went into a familiar routine of washing up, shower, and dressed. Only this time she didn’t have her giant closet with endless clothing options. Instead, she had a dresser with some familiar clothes, and a closet with Gwi-ma requested clothes for her. He needed her to appear immaculate and regal. He needed her to be the eye candy he told her she’d be. The clothes were all dresses, lavish and form fitting. He made sure to show skin where she used to hide. Shoulders, arms, mid torso. She didn’t care to fight it. She figured she’d pick a fight worth fighting from here on out. Like for freedom.
Dressed in a black mid length turtle neck dress that was backless and strapless, she tied her hair in a simple bun, not wanting to put any effort. Jinu had once asked her about makeup and hair products but she just hit him with a “I’m not gonna paint myself for any of them!” so he dropped it. He too decided to only pick battles worth fighting. Makeup wasn’t one of them.
They were on a private jet for appearances. Mostly for the humans Gwi-ma was trying to impress. Her stomach sank after several of them recognized her.
“Yes of course, this is previous Huntrix leader Rumi! After such an awful breakup from her group she realized how stressful this life had been on her so she decided to focus on behind the scenes now. She was brilliant enough to trust in my company. Wouldn’t you agree?” Gwi- ma looked to her.
Swallowing her pride, she took a deep breath. “Of course, sir. And it has been a blessing.” She smiled warmly at the guest who felt more relief about trusting this new sudden growing empire.
She answered questions to a limit. Gwi-ma made sure to hold everyone’s attention as much as possibly and made sure to keep her silent. So far, she played the role perfectly. She smiled, she was still, she even picked at food that was offered to her.
After the evening festivities ended, they flew back with the humans. Rumi struggled to stay awake most of the time. Jinu had snuck little mints and candies to her to keep her energized which at first, she declined but couldn’t fight it anymore.
After the humans left, they entered Gwi-mas mansion. Jinu, Mystery and Rumi waited for Gwi-ma to finish talking with his last investor.
“Looks like the little bird can be trained after all.” Mystery smiled.
“Why the fuck are you even here?” Jinu snapped again.
Before he can answer, Gwi-ma entered the room happily.
“My, what a night! You did very well Rumi! In fact, you did much better than I expected. Your recommendation will grant me some more souls and I cannot thank you enough. This turned out to be such a wonderful decision. What do you think Mystery?”
“Next time, doll yourself a little more. Put some effort and you’d almost be perfect.” He winked at her.
“Drop dead.” She said through her teeth.
“Little girl, you need to watch your mouth when you talk to me.” He stepped towards her.
“I am not yours to command.” She stepped toward him.
“Not yet.” He sinisterly said.
Jinu was in front of her in seconds, now towering over Mystery. Both men now donned their demon colors, Jinus eyes blazing.
“Now now boys. All this fuss over her, you’ll have me devouring the world at that rate. For now, she played her role well.” Gwi-ma interrupted them. Mystery calmed down back to his human form, smiling as he turned his back to the still furious Jinu and teleported out.
“My phone?” Rumi asked.
“I didn’t promise you that. I said we’ll see. Jinu.” Gwi-ma motioned them away, having Jinu hold Rumi and teleport home.
She shrugged him off and walked towards the couch. “I sold my soul for what?” She muttered.
“Here.”
He threw an object at her and she caught it with one hand. Her eyes opened wide. She couldn’t believe it. It was her phone.
She almost choked on a sob, taking it in. The service was off. But everything else was there minus a few apps she had for communication in case she had no service. She expected she wasn’t gonna be given easy access to a way out but she was happy to have this.
She went straight to the photos, her hands trembling as she instantly felt the warmth through the images. The girls laughing in every single image. Playful, fun, carefree.
I should have appreciated it all then…
She didn’t notice her eyes watering and tearing as she scrolled. She looked at messages with them, the inside jokes, the teasing, the creative brainstorms.
“Why?” She whispered as she let the emotions go through her.
Jinu turned to walk way but she repeated herself louder this time.
“WHY!”
He stopped and turned to see she was standing, her phone on the couch, her eyes not filled with anger but desperation.
“What?”
“Why did you turn on me Jinu? Why did you make me believe you were gonna help me but turned? Why? Why do you even get angry with Mystery? He gets to say those things because you brought me here, he gets to have an opportunity to make me his fucking breeding cow because you gave it to him! Why did you do this to me Jinu?” She didn’t scream, she pleaded for an answer. She walked closer to him as he stood there unable to say anything.
“I can see you Jinu! I can see the you I knew before…what happened? What did he do to you? I need to understand why everything fell apart!” She grabbed his face with her hands, pulling him to her. She wanted to shake him, maybe shake him back to his original setting somehow, something she knew would make them both laugh if he wasn’t like this.
He tried to take her hands off by gently grabbing her wrists but she held tight.
“No! You need to answer me! You owe me that much!”
“Rumi please, I can’t-“
“You can’t what? Jinu you can’t what?”
“I can’t give you the answer you want! I don’t why and I’m sorry! I know its not enough and I’m sorry!”
She pushed him away, making him stumble back.
“Oh hes sorry! Guess what Jinu, sorry is just another slap in my face.”
This time he went to her and grabbed her face with his hands. She tried to push him but he held her firmly, one hand on the back of her head the other holding her wrist that was about to hit him. His forehead rested on hers as he bend his neck down.
“All I can say is sorry because that’s all he lets me do.” He whispered.
Her eyes widened. “What?”
“He….something changed….I can’t fight it….I’m sorry.” His eyes squeezed shut. His body trembled. It was like he was being restrained everywhere and fought with every bit of his soul to get out but nothing worked. He was powerless to it and he couldn’t even explain to her why.
Which was why he flinched when her hand touched his face gently. His eyes opened and there it was, she was holding him voluntarily, with care.
“Jinu please help me and let me help you…talk to me.” She whispered.
“I…”
“Jinu please…” She looked into his eyes, it nearly killed him. So much desperation but more than that, hope. How was it even possible she can still hope? It amazed him, the resilience and strength she had, even now. Even after everything she still tried to find a chance, not just for herself but him too. It broke his heart more and more as he was incapable of giving her the same hope she tried to give him.
Her eyes suddenly rolled up and her body went limp. He caught her in his arms as she collapsed, lifted her up and cradling her. It destroyed him all over again. The tear left his eyes after using a spell to put her to sleep put into his mind by Gwi-ma. He carried her over to his bed and tucked her in, this time without any restraints. He closed the door and left her alone as he sat at his table.
Gwi-mas voice cut through his mind with a cruel hiss. “You ever let her voice hold you like that again and shes gone.”
