Chapter 1: The smile that awakend his heart
Chapter Text
The air smelled of grilled fish and sweets. The bright lanterns painted the surroundings in hues of gold and red, combining the sight with the sounds of laughter and chattering under the starry night. The sound of a shamisen drifted somewhere near the center square, its melody filling the blather.
Shinobu wandered slowly in a simple yukata with a white, butterfly wing patterned haori through the row of stalls, the sleeve of her haori brushing against the silk of stranger's yukata. She wasn't in a hurry.
Nights like these were rare.
Her eyes traveled to take in her surroundings, smiling faces of couples and children filling her vision, along with the bright colors of the glowing lanterns. Until her eyes landed on a tall man casually leaning by a stall, eyes half lidded in boredom. His pale hair and kimono shimmering in the lantern lights, looking harmless, yet he stood out compared to every other person that passed by.
And that was when her purple eyes met rainbow ones.
Shinobu took just a small glance, and smiled at him as she continued to walk her way, unaware of the head that turned to watch her walk her own path. Just for a moment, he considered of letting her go, Just a fleeting encounter, a pretty memory to keep. But the ache in his chest deepend. The man's figure now turned fully to the direction where Shinobu went, and he slipped into the crowd with silent steps to follow the trail of her presence.

That night, as the lanterns burned out long ago, along with the noises, Shinobu slept peacefully in her small home. And somewhere deep in the mountains, a cult leader sat cross in the heart of his temple. The chanting prayers of his followers echoed through the halls, each prayer symbolising their silent devotion to him. Normally, this sound soothed him. But tonight, it did the complete opposite.
Why do they bore me tonight?
His mind kept replaying the same scene over and over; The gentle gaze that her purple eyes held, the way the lantern lights hit her face in an angle that made her look ethereal- He has seen countless of beautiful women, but none of them had her smile. He smiled back too, of course, with the usual smile he wore as that could make anyone feel at ease. The ache in his chest deepend the more he thought of her, the more he thought of that smile.
Perhaps a little stroll in the moonlight would be helpful.
The moon was high up in the sky, the stars accompanying the illuminating light that bathed the town. The soft chirping of crickets filled the night, weaving a quiet melody of beneath the silver glow of the moon. The clicks of his geta made soft sounds against the stones as he wandered, smiling and humming a soft melody. He didn't need to search long. The faint scent of Shinobu lingered near a small house on the edge of the district.
So this is where you live, little butterfly.
He imagined her making tea in her small house, or perhaps even comb her hair while she hummed a melody. He imagined how she'd tend and organize her small home, and plan her daily routines. She lived alone, without a doubt. Poor thing, he thought. No family by her side, no kin that she could wake up with everyday in her small house- how lonely she must feel in such an empty space.
That same night, he returned to the temple and sat crossed legged with his hands tucked under his chin, surrounded by limbs and corpses. He didn't remember how many he devoured tonight, but he didn't care. Then, the Upper Moon two whispered words he never thought he'd ever say in his life.
"I think...I'm in love"
His own words sent a shiver down his spine. His hand went to his chest, and for the first time in a century, he felt his own heart beat at the thought of her. His smile curved deeper.
I need to see her over and over and over.
Chapter Text
The sun started to set, casting its last light onto mountains. Shinobu stepped outside her home onto the busy streets with a basket tucked against her side. Days have passed since the festival, but the memory of the shamisen, lights and chattering still filled her mind. It was a rare privilege to distract her from the loneliness that accompanied her for more than half of her life. She wanted to feel a part of the world, even if was just a little.
She adjusted the sleeve of her haori and headed towards the marketplace, unaware of the eyes that followed her since the festival night.
Shinobu stopped by the flower stall, observing the various options of different flower types arranged on each row. Her eyes stopped at the camellias, and a pang of nostalgia hit her the moment her eyes landed on them. She remembered her dear sister, Kanae. She always loved camellias, she recalled how Kanae would always arrange the flowers with their mother whenever their father brought fresh ones. The smell that filled their home lingered in her nose till this day. She crouched down, and picked them up.
Across the street, the same rainbow eyes watched the way she hesitated before picking the camellias as he was pretending to inspect a lacquered comb. The faint crinkle at the corner of her lips as she carefully observed the flowers with small, gentle steps. She didn't see him yet, that was fine. Watching her every move and memorizing her careful and gentle movements became a ritual for him the past few days, following her without her awareness each time she left her small house in a perfect, human disguise that hid any of his demon trace. But today, the ache in his chest was unbearable. Curiosity and watching her wasn't enough anymore.
He needed to hear her voice.
His geta clicked softly against the stone as he crossed the street, her frame becoming more clear as he approached her closer and closer.
"What a lovely choice."
Shinobu turned around at the sound of a male voice, and saw the same man she smiled at those nights ago. Those same, rainbow eyes that gazed into her purple ones.
"...Oh, it's you." She murmured, taken back a bit by the sudden approach.
She inspected his features now that he was much closer, he was quite tall. Taller than any man she's ever seen in her life. His irises possessed different shades of colors, giving them a rainbow like hue along with long, dark lower eyelashes and thick eyebrows. His hair however, didn't match the darkness of his eyelashes and eyebrows. The snow white hair fell over his shoulders, down to his back like a waterfall. She never saw anyone in her life with such features that stand out, yet so beautiful at the same time.
The man tilted his head and his smile widened
"So you remember me? That makes me very happy."
Shinobu brought the camellias she was holding closer to her face, as if they could shield her from the intense gaze that was lingering on her smaller frame. Despite feeling nervous, she still held a polite smile.
"We met at that festival, and you smiled at me. Such a sweet, little smile. I've been thinking about it."
Shinobu blinked, unsure what to say. Compliments weren't foreign to her at all, but something about his tone seemed different. It was too genuine.
"I didn't catch your name that night." He folded his hands behind his back as he leaned in slightly closer, softening his smile, as if he sensed her nervousness. "Would you tell me?"
She hesitated for a moment, her breath hitching before parting her lips to give him an answer.
"...Kocho Shinobu." She said softly in a polite tone.
Shinobu.
"Kocho Shinobu..." He repeated it to himself softly in a tone above a whisper, as if he was savouring her name. Her name slid into his ears like music. Then, the man looked at her with a gentle expression before slowly bowing to her politely.
"It is an honor to meet you Shinobu, I am Doma. Your name is very beautiful, it suits you perfectly."
She felt heat rushing to her cheeks, but she gave a small, respectful bow back. "Thank you" She murmured, shifting the basket on her side. He tilted his head again, studying her with childlike curiosity. He felt his heartbeat quickening the more he looked at her. She was up close to him, closer than he has been to her when following her these past few days.
"Do you live nearby?"
She hesitated again for just a slight moment. She should be greatful that someone cared enough to stop her for a small conversation, since he seemed like a harmless man; the one everyone would trust. But something in her guts told her to be careful.
"Yes. I do." She said simply and casually, not wanting to give information directly to a man she just met.
"How lovely. Then perhaps we'll see each other again."
He stepped back with a graceful bow. "Until next time"
You'll see me over and over, Shinobu. Until you belong completely to me.
Shinobu was left stunned as she watched the tall man walk away in the evening lanterns. She remembers him as the man that stood out at the festival, yes, but why would he be eager to start a conversation with a stranger he only saw under lantern lights for a brief moment? Shinobu shook her head, as if wanting to clear her thoughts. She didn't realize that the moon started to peek out from behind the mountains, so she purchased the camellias and started to walk her way home.
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —–· · • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Despite her attempts to try and not think about that man, she felt her chest tighten each time her mind replayed their encounter at the marketplace. She slid the wooden door to her home open, the faint scent of tatami greeting her. As she stepped inside, she slid the door behind her closed, and began arranging the camellias. As she arranged the flowers neatly, her mind drifted back to that man, Doma was it? There was something he wanted from her if he simply approached her like that, she thought. She remembered how men around her age in the past approached her for her looks mostly, most even offering her money to spend a night with her, to which she accepted. Not to please them, but for her own living. Unease crawled in her chest as she remembered how much she struggled a few years ago as a helpless, orphaned girl who wandered the world without a home, destination or guide ever since her family has been slaughtered. The night where her life turned upside down.
She stopped mid movement as she realized how deep she was digging into her thoughts, each one of them being responsible for different sensations building in her chest.
But what else could she do? This is nothing new for her. Loneliness and her own thoughts have been her companions for years, she should have been used to it by now.
Yet...a tiny part of her hoped that this rainbow eyed stranger would not be a fleeting memory in her life like all the others, but someone who'd play a role in her life.
As Shinobu finished arranging the flowers, she hummed in satisfaction. The lantern lights in her home slowly started to dim until darkness settled in as Shinobu tucked herself into her futon, eyelashes growing heavy as each second passes by.
As time passed, Shinobu stirred at the faintest sound outside her home. The whisper of wind? A distant creak? She told herself it was nothing and curled beneath her blanket, unaware of the figure crouched on the roof, rainbow eyes glowing faintly in the moonlight.
Doma rested his chin in his hand, smiling as he watched the light in her window fade. He whispered her name like a prayer, over and over, as if it were a blessing to do so. The sound of it made something inside him spark and ache at once.
"Sleep well, Shinobu," he murmured, his voice sweet and soft.
How beautiful she was, so delicate. So soft. He could still see the faint blush on her cheeks as he complimented her name, the tremor of her voice like the melody of a song he never wanted to end.
Oh, how he wanted to keep her, wrap her up and shield her from the world and its horrors. Humans were so fragile, so quick to break. If he left her like this, she'd wither and die like everyone else. The thought clawed at him with a sharp, choking pain he never knew before.
No... no..I can't allow that. I won't ever allow it.
His fingers tapped against his knee, his smile widening, as he got a solution to the horrifiying thought.
He could fix this. He could make her perfect-- make her last forever. A perfect little demon, just like him. They could smile together for eternity.
The idea bloomed in his mind like camellia: bright and beautiful. But first, he needed her trust and warmth. That smile that became the first color in his world.
"I'll come back for you, my dear Shinobu."
A breeze blew, carrying his silent vow along with it across the sleeping town.

Chapter Text
Shinobu's eyes slowly fluttered open, the morning light filtering through the thin curtain of her window. She sat upright, and stretched her arms while yawning. She looked at the direction of her window for a moment, motionless, letting the stillness of the morning settle into her mind. Eventually, she slowly stood up, dressed herself in a purple yukata, and tied her hair with her signature butterfly hairpin.
Just as she finished getting ready for the day, her stomach grumbled, a reminder that she hadn't eaten. With a small sigh, she made her way to her kitchen and began preparing breakfast. Shinobu didn't eat much, she never did.
Her nourishment relied mainly on her own vegetables that grew in her small backyard garden. But now that the colder seasons came, The soil would harden, making it nearly impossible for any plant to grow. Winter was the season that was the least to her liking. It reminded her that it made even the simplest things difficult; staying warm and keeping her belly full. That was the reason why she didn't eat as much; to save food whenever it becomes necessary.
Ever since she had to figure everything out by herself, she collected as many herbs as she could incase she ever got sick. Chances were that she'd always catch a cold, or a flu whenever it was cold. She hated being sick, and being skillful in medicine was a trait she was thankful to have. It always guided her to what she has to do whenever she was sick.
Shinobu cleaned up after the small mess she made from eating, and stepped outside her home with a basket tucked underneath her arm as the sunlight hit her small form. As her geta softly clicked against the stone ground, she took a deep breath to breathe the fresh, cold air in. The air was slightly colder than the previous days, a common sign of harsh cold and snow approaching, she thought.
The sun sank gently beyond the hills, painting the sky in shades of amber and rose. The basket that was tucked underneath Shinobu's arm was now filled with mountains of herbs, its form casting a long shadow on the plucked plants over the ground.
Shinobu crouched down the pluck the last herb from the ground before throwing it into her towering basket. She turned her head to look at the plucked field of plants, then her basket. She collected more than she actually planned, but perhaps it was better that way. It'll last her for a very long time.
After a several attempts to pick up the heavy basket, she finally lifted the heaviness in her arms. It took a lot of her strength to keep the basket from falling, so she wasted no time and picked up a fast pace to get to her destination as fast as possible.
It felt like forever to even reach halfway back to the town, she underestimated how challenging it would be to do a simple thing for someone so small like her. It was one of the things she despised about herself; her lack of strength.
Feeling the basket get heavier and her arms growing weaker and more tired as each second passes, she stopped and lowered the basket carefully to the ground. Her arms started to ache the moment the basket left her arms, and she rubbed them gently to easen the pain as a soft frown twisted her features.
Her head tilted a bit up, and she immediatley recognized where she was the moment she saw a large sakura tree next to a river. The great sakura's petals flew freely into the flowing water of the neighbouring river, as Shinobu came closer and closer with each struggling step.
She lowered the basket beside onto the soft grass beneath the sakura, then she sat down on the bench and let the petals drift onto her shoulders as she caught her breath.
She looked at the sky, stars were starting to show up and the moon too.
"It's a wonderful evening, isn't it?"
Her eyes snapped open and her body stiffened as the sound of a voice snapped her out of her thoughts. Her head turned towards the direction of the voice.
And she saw him again.
Her breath caught. she didn't hear a sound of him coming, as if he's been here the entire time already.
"My apologies. I must have startled you. I was taking a stroll till I saw you here. Fate really wants us to meet every time, hm?"
"It's you again. Good evening." Shinobu smiled politely.
"Good evening to you aswell." Doma replied with a smile back.
"May I sit here?"
"Of course." Shinobu scooted a bit to the edge of the bench, giving him some space to sit down. She watched as he sat down next to her in a smooth motion.
"Do you come here often?" he asked, tilting his head at her.
"Sometimes. It's not so far away from the town, but it's far enough to let me have peace."
He hummed. "I see. I understand that very well."
Did he? Was he a troubled person just as she was? Consumed by loneliness and self draining thoughts whenever everything felt too heavy? She wondered.
"If you don't mind me asking....Why me?" The words slipped out before she could stop them.
"Why did you even bother to talk to me in the first place...? Is there something you need from me?" She tensed internally as the sentences left her lips.
"Because, dear Shinobu," He turned his torso now to her aswell.
"Your smile melted the ice in my heart that I never thought I had."
Her breath hitched.
"Your smile became the first color in my world, Shinobu. Do you know what that means?" He spoke in a soft voice.
"It means I can't let you go." His hand reached out to her stunned face, and he brushed a stray lock behind her with long, pale and slender fingers.
"My intentions are pure; Shinobu. I wish to protect you from the darkness that waits to consume as all."
She stared at him stunned with her big, hazy purple eyes. Studying his face, as if searching for any hidden truth that his features might mask.
"What...what makes me so different from all the others?" She asked as she felt her fingers tremble lightly.
His smile didn't disappear. If anything, it held more delight.
"You are the first to see me. Not as a god; but something more. Your smile broke the emptiness that lingered inside of me. You are my light, Shinobu. And I am yours, if you let me be."
He moved closer to her, she noticed it but didn't move a muscle.
"Let me take you away from the pain and loneliness that tortured you for years, Shinobu. You'll never feel a hint of sadness ever again, not when I'm with you."
His eyes didn't leave hers. They held a gaze so gentle as if it were meant only for her.
"I...I don't know if I can." She said in a tone above a whisper, as she turned her head away from him to the petal covered water.
Could she trust a man she met not long ago? Could she truly believe in the warmth he offered? Nothing about him seemed dangerous, in fact, it was the complete opposite. Shinobu yearned for a kin, for warmth, for a companion.
And it seems like fate finally answered her internal cries. But she wasn't stupid. She wasn't stupid to let a man she barely knows so quickly in her life. He could hide ill intentions behind that gentle smile, he could mask it with sugar sweet words.
But a part of her wanted so desperately to believe him. The same part that made her chest ache lightly in his presence.
"That's alright." He answered in a sweet tone.
"I'll wait for you. No matter how long it takes."
Shinobu stared at him for a long time before once again turning her head. "Forgive me, but I must go. It's getting late."
Doma's smile did not falter. He watched as Shinobu stood up, and as she looked at her basket for a moment before she took a deep breath.
She slowly lowered herself, and tried to pick the heavy basket up. Much to her embarrasment, she struggled to lift it. She felt his eyes on her and her cheeks turn into a shade of red now that he saw how she struggled.
She kept on trying to lift it, until a strong arm effortlessly lifted it. She blinked and looked up to him, she didn't even hear his footsteps. At all.
He smiled down at her as the tucked the basket to his side, then he extended his large hand towards her, offering it to her to help her up.
"Let me help you carry this home. You shouldn't walk in the darkness alone, especially carrying something heavy. You'd get hurt, Shinobu. And I couldn't bear that."
Something in her chest fluttered, faint and fleeting. The words caught in her throat, light and yet heavy. Her heart gave a quiet termor before she forced a smile back and hesitantly accepted his hand.
The moment her soft skin brushed his, he felt a wave of ache in his chest. Her skin was softer than he imagined, much more delicate than he thought. His large hand dwarfed hers as he gently helped up to her feet. Shinobu's face was fully red at this point, and her hand was still in his before she gently pulled back.
"Thank you...But I managed before."
He chuckled softly "Still, it suits you more to relax beneath the cherry blossoms rather than struggle against them." He turned slightly, his smile still painted across his face as he cast her a sidelong glance.
"Lead the way."
Shinobu nodded and they began walking towards the glowing town. They walked in silence side by side. Shinobu glanced up at him, for a brief moment he stared at the path they were walking, until his eyes caught hers. She looked away shyly the moment he caught her taking a glance at him.
Cute.
When they finally reached her home, she broke their shared silence.
"This is my home, I live here."
I know.
Shinobu bowed deeply. "I thank you for carrying my basket for me and accompanying me all the way home."
Doma smiled, before he gently set the basket down near the entrance of home.
"You musn't thank me. I told you I want to protect you, didn't I?"
Shinobu felt heat reach her cheeks, and she looked a bit until she saw him reach for something in his sleeve. He pulled out a small, silk blue pouch with a red string ribbon that kept it closed together.
"For you." He gently took her hand and placed the pouch in it.
"Open it once you're ready." He stepped back with a bow.
"Until next time, Shinobu. Sleep well tonight." He turned to walk away, leaving a speechless Shinobu with her hand still extended where he left the pouch.
"Wait!"
Doma turned his head. "Hm?"
Shinobu's lips parted slightly, before she spoke again. "Will I see you again?"
For a moment, a gentle breeze caressed their skin as it traveled freely through the moment of silence. Then, he spoke.
"Do you want to?" He asked gently, as if any tone above would destroy their shared moment before parting ways for tonight.
Shinobu hesitated for a moment, as if thinking of a better way to put her answer. She clutched the fabric of her kimono, and let out an exhale.
"...Yes."
Doma's smile widen faintly. "Who knows then? Perhaps if you wish hard enough, You'll see me." His tone shifted to something new, something she didn't hear in his voice before; teasing.
With a final smile, he started to walk away, disappearing into the dim street.
Shinobu stared at his form fading away. She looked at the pouch in her hand for a moment before she opened the sliding door of her home, and brought the basket inside. She gently slid the door closed behind her and began to get herself ready for bed.
As she plopped on her futon, a smile spread on her face. How good it felt to finally rest on comfortable softness all clean after working hard. She breathed in the scent of camellias that greeted her when she entered inside her home, and just for a moment, she forgot the world around her.
Until her eyes landed on the pouch that she put on her low table.
She sat upright and reached for it, carefully, she undid the ribbon and a small gasp left her lips when she saw what was inside.
A beautiful, lacquered comb in the shades of red and gold crystal on its oval shaped edges. It looked like it was supposed to represent a butterfly, each small crystal shimmering faintly in the lantern light. Its quality matched with what only the rich could afford. It was beautiful. Too beautiful.
Carefully, with delicate care, Shinobu placed it back on the lower table, afraid as if one wrong move might shatter it.
She layed down flat on her back, staring into the ceiling. She thought of Doma's words, his silent vows that made her stomach tickle and make heat rush to her cheeks. She wondered if he thought ill of her the moment he saw her vulnerable weakness as she tried to lift that heavy basket. Perhaps he helped her out of pity and kindness.
The moments she recalled from earlier resulted in a flushed face, Shinobu flopped on her stomach and buried her face in her pillow. She didn't realize that today's tiredness settled in, so she relaxed her body on her soft futon as she covered herself with a blanket.
Her eyelids grew heavy, and the last thing she saw was her dim room before sleep embraced her.
Notes:
chapter 3 done! Though i'm not fully satisifed with the length of it. No matter how much I write It'll never be enough :’)
One thing I wanted to make clear; Shinobu and Doma may not be 100% canon accurate when it comes to their personalities. If i’m going to be honest, it’s not easy to write them in character and keeping up with the plot, but i’ll try my best. Feedback is always welcomed
Chapter Text
Cold. Incredibly cold.
She wasn't supposed to be out that night, her parents said no; too late, and too cold.
But Shinobu couldn't help herself, the neighbours whispered about a shooting star that would cross the night sky with its companions. And when it would, it'd 'scare' the demons out of the woods. Demons were just a fairytale, meant to scare children her age, she told herself that night.
"Kanae? Wake up!" A ten year old Shinobu tugged at her older sister's sleeve, but she mumbled only something in her sleep, and turned over.
Shinobu could only frown and let out a frustrated sigh.
She grabbed her sister's white haori, and put it on. It was too large and long for her, but it was enough to keep the cold away. Kanae wasn't coming with her anyway, so she could use her haori just for tonight.
Shinobu tip toed to the exit of her home, careful to not wake her sleeping parents. As soon as she left her house, she ran while looking up at the starry sky, her heart fluttering with excitement.
There weren't many people outside, only a few couples passing by as Shinobu sat down on the soft grass. She hugged Kanae's haori close to her body, as if it were a shelter to shield her from the cold wind.
Just as the rumours said, the sky was suddenly filled with light that didn't belong to the moon nor the stars. A shooting star, along with other meteorites that accompanied from behind crossed the starry sky in what seemed like a decent speed from where Shinobu sat. Shinobu looked at the sight before her in awe. She remembered that she had wishes to make, and she quickly bowed her head down and clasped her hands together.
"One day...I wish to be truly happy in life. Please, dear gods, guide me to a path in life where misfortune shall not meet me or anyone else I love. Let me stay happy like I am now. And if I at some point get sad, then guide me back to being always happy." Shinobu mumbled softly in a hopeful tone, more to the sky than herself.
Her head slowly rose again to the sky, the last crossing trace of shooting stars light disappeared, along with the other meteorites. Now it was only the twinkling stars with the moon left that complemented the sky.
Shinobu stared at the sky for a very long time, stargazing as she was getting lost in her thoughts. It wasn't until she realized that she didn't notice how long she was staying outside this late and how cold it became.
Without hesitation, the young girl stood up rapidly, and walked with steps as fast as her small legs could carry her.
Her home became more clear and visible the closer she walked towards it, and a sense of relief washed over her.
Until something felt wrong. Very wrong.
An unfamilar scent traveled up her nose with each, cautious step Shinobu took. She entered the inside of her home, and it was darker than usual. Too dark.
The disgusting scent lingered as it got stronger and stronger with each trembling step. Shinobu froze as a faint sound broke the silence.
The moment her breathing quickened, she covered her mouth with shaking hands to prevent any loud sounds coming from her.
Each step she took felt wrong and dangerous. But it was her home that she was in, and she had to know where her sister and parents were. The sound became louder and clearer as she got closer. It sounded like...crunching, and like someone was eating something. Or someone.
Sweat started forming on Shinobu's forehead, and her heartbeat picked up a fast pace. She felt her chest tighten with fear she never felt before.
She took the last turn to where the smell and sound sourced from, her heart dropped.
Blood. Everywhere.
Her breath faltered as her gaze fell upon the still figure sprawled on the ground before her. It was her mother. Her clothes torn, and stained a deep, dark red. A small gasp left Shinobu as her hands flew immediately to cover her mouth. Tears welled up in her wide, fearful eyes.
Her gaze then traveled further, the sounds of crunching filled the room. From the darkness, more fresh blood seeped forward, tracing the tatami.
Shinobu took a step back. She slowly came to realization that whoever or whatever killed her family while she was gone, was still there.
The faint silhouette showed another body, if Shinobu was sure, sprawled across the floor. And the silhouette that stood high, was the thing that was responsible for all of this. Silent tears started to flow, as Shinobu's legs started to feel weak. She took another step back, her body shaking with intense fear.
Without a second thought, the ten year old ran away for her life.
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —–· · • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Shinobu jolted awake, strands of her hair clinging to her sweaty forehead. She panted, feeling her limbs tremble. She looked around, she was in the present. Not in the past where her nightmare just jolted her awake. She buried her face in her hands, taking slow and steady breaths to calm herself down.
She stood up from her sweat soaked sheets. She went over to the wooden bucket of water, and washed her face. When she finished, she let her gaze wander to her window. The sun was halfway down to set, indicating that she slept longer than usual.
She sighed, she spent the extra time sleeping rather than to use it for more necessary needs that could have been fulfilled today. But either way, she didn't feel like doing anything today. Not after the nightmare she had reminded her of her mistake that lead her to where she is now.
So instead of stepping out today, she decided that she'll stay indoors.
Shinobu was organizing herbs, the sun disappeared long ago with its lights. While it may have felt like a chore to others, she liked working with herbs. It kept her hands busy whenever she had nothing else to do.
She was humming to herself, a small habit she picked up over the years. There was a peaceful atmosphere, until suddenly...
Two slow knocks came from her front door.
Shinobu froze mid movement momentarily. She slowly looked to her front door, unease gnawning at her as she thought; Who could be knocking this late? She slowly rose, and walked over to her front door.
Slowly, she slid the door open, just enough to see the person behind her front door. The moment she peeked, she recognized the person immediately. It was none other than Doma.
"Good evening, Shinobu. I hope I'm not intruding." He smiled gently, as he looked down at her.
Shinobu felt her unease easen up a bit, as this man now was no longer truly a stranger. She slid her door fully open.
"Good evening." Shinobu replied back with a polite smile as always.
"I see that you're wearing the hair comb I gifted you." He chuckled. "Do you liked it?"
Her hand instinctively went to touch the hair comb on her head that was keeping her bangs together. Despite the beauty of the hair comb, she thought she looked silly with the way the hair comb was keeping her bangs away from her face on the top of her head.
"I do, It's very beautiful. I didn't get to thank you for it."
Doma's smile widened faintly. "You musn't thank me. It suits you perfectly as I have imagined it." He chuckled softly.
"I didn't see you outside today. You weren't planning to hide from me, were you?" He teased with a slightly playful tone, though Shinobu could feel there was something deeper hidden beneath it.
"I...wasn't feeling well enough today to go outside." Shinobu replied as casually as she could to hide the half lie in her words.
"Then I'll keep you company here." He stepped inside without any invitation, as if it were his own home. The sudden act took Shinobu back for a moment, but she let him inside without saying anything. She slid the door closed, and watched him sit by the low table before she eventually went over to sit there aswell.
The low table carried different types of herbs, each smell combined that filled the space with scents of nature. One plant that particularly stood out was a small, plucked branch of wisteria. Shinobu could swore that she saw a hint of discomfort on Doma's face for a moment when he saw the wisteria. But when she blinked, His expression returned to the gentle manner like before, as if it never hid any hint of discomfort.
She shook her thoughts away, and went back to organizing herbs. Not with the same concentration as before now that there's a second presence in front of her.
"You look quite pale, Shinobu. Are you alright?" Doma asked with a hint of curiousity in his gentle tone.
"I'm alright. I just...had a bad dream. That's all." She said as she was moving the herbs.
Doma hummed under his breath, not fully believing her. He watched as her hands worked diligently with herbs.
"Such delicate hands you have, Shinobu. I'd hate to see them stained. Or ruined." His voice lowered a bit as he said that.
Shinobu looked up at him, a bit puzzled and uneased as if trying to figure out what he meant by that, despite already catching a hint of the implication.
Doma noticing the mix her expression carried, smiled softly. As if to easen whatever she may have though when he said that.
"Forgive me, Shinobu. I'm trying to say that you're precious to me. More than I admit." His tone shifted back to the same, gentle tone Shinobu knew. In a heartbeat, he set something on the table. A small lacquered box.
"For you." He slid the small box to her, keeping an eye on her every move.
Shinobu took the box from the table with a curious and nervous face, trembling hands slowly opened the box. Her eyes widend at what she saw; A necklace, made out of pure gold. The pendant was shaped like a butterfly, pretty much like the hair comb he gifted her. It was decorated with small crystals, each one glimmering like stars under the lantern light.
Shinobu's breath hitched, she looked at it for a long time before she looked at Doma, who was smiling like a child in love.
"Do you like it?" He asked, tilting his head. Shinobu stared at him, seemingly speechless for a slight moment.
"This is too much- I can't repay you back-"
"You don't have to. I'm not asking for anything in return. Your smile is enough." He interrupted her gently, easing the intensity that her own words gave her.
"Besides, you are the one to make the jewerly look beautiful. Usually, it's the opposite for other people." He stated as he rose smoothly, brushing imaginary dust off his robe.
Shinobu's heart fluttered at his simple statement. She watched him rise from his seat, his towering figure casting a long shadow over her.
"It's getting late. You should rest, Shinobu." His tone remained soft as always, which matched the increasing softness in his eyes as he inspected the growing tiredness in her eyes.
Shinobu rose to her feet. The moment she stood up, she felt the tiredness kick in. She hadn't even realized it until now. She smiled at him, acknowledging that he was right.
She followed him to the exit to her home, where the front door gently slid open. Before he stepped out, he turned to look at her one last time. Shinobu looked up at him, and for the first time in years, a genuine smile painted her face with her eyes softened aswell.
"Thank you. For coming to me, for even thinking about me. I am truly thankful, Doma."
Something inside him sparkled so much that the ache in his chest went to his stomach when she said his name for the very first time.
"I think of you all the time, Shinobu. I can't imagine how lonely you must feel living all alone for so long without anyone by your side."
She blinked. She didn't directly tell him that she lived all by herself, not even that she was alone for years. Did she? Now that she thought about it, she remembered that he mentioned her living alone at their lasting meeting underneath the great sakura. To her suspicion, he never even saw her house before he carried that basket and accompanied her all the way home. So he never saw whether she lived alone or not till now.
Weird. She thought.
Being too tired to even think any further, she shrugged her thoughts off and turned her full attention to Doma.
"You are right. It's been so long since I felt what friendship felt like. What the presence of someone who cared felt like. Thank you. For giving me what I wanted for some time."
It was true, she really forgot how it felt like when someone was by her side without needing something from her, but by being there because they cared.
His smile only widened as he grabbed her warm hands in his cold ones, dwarfing them easily.
"Like I told you, you shouldn't thank me for doing what I want to do, Shinobu. I want you to know, I'll stay by your side. Always. No matter what."
Her breath caught. Just how many times was this man going to surprise her? She thought.
"Now, please head inside so you don't catch a cold. Sleep well tonight." He gently let her hands go.
"Your house isn't far away, is it?" Shinobu asked somewhat concerned, hoping that he didn't live far away to walk in the darkness and coldness.
"No. Do not worry about me. Go rest, Shinobu. You'll need your energy." He bowed to her as he stepped back.
Shinobu waved him a goodbye as his figure disappeared slowly. She slid her door closed, then she slid to the floor, hugging her knees to her chest. His presence had a bigger effect on her more than she admit. But tonight, she felt more at peace than usual.
For now, he didn't show any signs of ill intentions towards her. And that was the part that made Shinobu feel at ease. Well, partly at ease. Despite his gentle tone, sweet statements, and that serene smile, Shinobu couldn't help but feel that there was something off about him.
She grabbed her head and groaned softly. She was overthinking too much perhaps. This is new for her after all. So thoughts like these should have been normal when someone new entered someone else's life. Right?
She didn't waste any more time drowning in her thoughts as her tiredness increased. She cleaned her low table clean, changed her clothes, turned off the lights and tucked herself in. She closed her eyes for tonight, hoping that this new turn in her life would perhaps mean something good.
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —–· · • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
As days passed, Shinobu found herself thinking more of Doma than she wanted to admit to herself. She'd see him occasionally out in the marketplace, sometimes even underneath the great sakura by the river, where they'd put up small conversations with small laughs.
She learned that he was a man who was mostly on his own aswell when it came to bonds. He told her how he came from a religious community that was called the "Eternal Paradise Faith", where he played a major role there as the "Great Founder" for the followers there. Shinobu didn't completely believe him, but there was no hint of insincerity in his tone.
He in addition told her that the main reason he usually went out after the sun set completely was because he had more free time there from his duties. Shinobu gradually understood him the more he revealed about himself.
She eventually told him how she lost her parents to an 'accident'. She didn't mention anything about blood, or a creature that ate Kanae and her parents to death. Though, the truth nearly slipped out. He listened intentively to her past, as if he were listening to to one of his followers.
Shinobu found more comfort in his presence the more she was around him, and each time she was, her insides felt warm.
Shinobu woke up restless one morning. She went with her day by doing her usual chores and routines. By the time she was done, she noticed that the sun started to sink behind the mountains.
She left her house, lantern lights were starting to lighten up the streets with dim lights. She went to the marketplace, expecting to find him there.
He wasn't to be seen anywhere.
Perhaps he was where the Great Sakura was. She strolled quickly to where the river was located with its neighbouring tree, as she expected his presence there rather in the town.
He wasn't there either.
With a sigh, Shinobu could only turn back and hope that he'd perhaps visit her at her house. As she was walking back while being deep in her thoughts, a few drops fell on her cheek and forehead.
She stopped mid walking. She extended her hand, and another few drops fell into her palm.
She looked up at the sky, and there were no stars neither the moon in sight. In fact, dark, large clouds were to be seen. It went from a few drops to now fully raining. Shinobu didn't waste time and began running back, although she wasn't even halfway back from the Great Sakura.
By the time she arrived in front of her home, she slid the paper door open and let out a small gasp.
Doma was already sitting in a lotus position by the low table, as if he was waiting for her to return briefly.
"Good evening, Shinobu. You poor thing, you're so soaked."
Shinobu stared stunned. She should have told him that this was wrong, that he needed to leave. But she didn't. Instead, she slid the door behind her close as rain started to fall harder and harder against the ground by every second that passed.
"How did you-"
"A thunderstorm was announced earlier, and I was worried for you." He interrupted lightly, not breaking composure.
Her eyes traveled to his lap, where he held a medium sized lacquered box.
"Take a seat, Shinobu. You need warmth right now- or you'll catch a cold." He left the lacquered box where he was sitting and rose smoothly, right as Shinobu sat by the low table. She wasn't too soaked from the rain, but she was soaked enough to make her shiver a bit. Before she could process anything, a warm blanket was dropped on her from behind.
Doma adjusted the blanket on her so that it secured every inch of her body.
She blinked, completely caught off of guard, unable to speak. He sat down across the table as before. As if he didn't stand up at all.
"Better?" He asked with that serene smile of his.
She stared stunned before nodding her head at him softly.
"Yes...Thank you." A faint blush crept up her cheeks.
He slid the lacquered box to her across the table.
"For you. Open it when you feel like it. It'll look gorgeous on you when you come with me."
She stared the the lacquered box. "What is this?"
"A choice. come with me tonight or take your time to think the choice through."
She stared at him, unsure what to say.
"You don't have to answer now if you can't at the moment." He said reassuringly.
She looked at the old paper scrolls with ink and a brush next to it that she left earlier behind on the table. Right. She was going to write a to do list for the next few days, she couldn't remember everything at once. Especially when she barely had any rest over the last few days. She looked at Doma's face for a moment.
"Don't mind me. Do what you have to do. I'd hate to disturb you." He said calmly.
Shinobu gave him a brief smile before she took the brush, dipped it in ink and started writing her reminders for the next few days. The only sounds were the sounds of her soft breathing, and the cracks of thunder and harsh rain outside. Her brush traveled smoothly over the paper, filling it with black ink like soft waves.
She dipped the brush back into the ink, the bristles trembling slightly in her hand. She was focused, very focused. Behind her, Doma hummed. A soft, haunting melody. Yet...something felt wrong with it. A rhythm that didn't feel human.
Shinobu glanced over her shoulder, and froze.
He was perfectly still. Too still.
His chest didn't rise. Didn't fall.
No breath.
Shinobu blinked hard, her heart pounding. Maybe she was imagining it. She turned back to writing.
But then-
"You shouldn't frown, little one." His voice broke the silence suddenly, so loud it made her ears jolt.
She hadn't even hear him move.
The moment before, he was sitting across her. Now, he was behind her that made her question; Did she truly know the man that was now behind her back?
"You're trembling. Still cold, Shinobu-chan?"
She turned her head to glance over her shoulder "No, I'm alright-" Her words were cut off the moment she saw that something was off. He was still again. Perfectly still, like a statue. This time, she knew she wasn't imagining things.
"Doma...what...what are you?"
His smile widened. "Ah. So you noticed. Clever girl."
The weak lantern flickered, his shadow cast a long stretch over the tatami. Cracks that Shinobu never saw were starting to show under his perfect face. A sharp pair of fangs suddenly started to show, a red spot that looked like a blood drop faded in on the top of his head. His long, slender hands started to grow long, purple claws. More over, his pupils split into kanji in both of his eyes.
The thunder cracked, fierce and sudden. Light washed over the world — and for a heartbeat, his eyes shone with it, the kanji within them glinting like heaven’s light reflected in hell.
上弦の弐 'Upper Moon Two'
Shinobu dropped her brush, ink spilling everywhere on her written paper scrolls. Her lips parted, shaking as her eyes widen in fear. Every instinct scream run. But her whole body was frozen, she couldn't move it.
"Don't be afraid, Shinobu-chan. I could never hurt you. Never. You're too precious for me to do that." His fangs glimmered as he said that with the same gentleness that didn't fade away.
"You...Y-you're not-"
"Human? No, I'm far beyond a human. But...I still care about you. I still deem you as very important to me, Shinobu."
Shinobu stayed frozen in fear. A droplet of small sweat slid down her forehead. She knew that neither screaming or running would be smart. She had to think, quick.
"Come with me tonight, Shinobu. Let me take you away from this painful, empty life you lived. I'll make you happy, all you have to do is say yes." He kneeled to her level, in a slow motion as if he were approaching a wild, startled rabbit.
"You...you make it sound like as if I'd never return." She mumbled under a shaky breath.
"You wouldn't want to return."
The room felt like it started to shrink, or at least that's what it felt like for Shinobu only. She remained still, as his hand — now clawed with claws so sharp that could tear skin, cupped her face with reverent care.
"I love you," The words were foreign even on his own tongue. "The first and only time I'll ever love. I vowed that I'll protect you, Shinobu. No matter what it'd take. Come with me tonight, and forget everthing that once made you worry."
Tears pricked at her eyes "I don't know if I can."
His thumb brushed her eyelid gently "That's alright. You don't have to stress about thinking of your choice tonight." He rose to his feet.
“I'll always be there, Shinobu. Whenever you're ready, I'll be there."
Shinobu blinked and he was already gone. She let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. By then, her eyelids started to feel heavy. Before she could think a step further, her vision faded.
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —–· · • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Her whole body ached in discomfort as her eyelashes fluttered open. She fell asleep on the cold tatami, she pushed herself to sit upright with the blanket sliding down her shoulders. Just for a moment, she thought that last night was a dream she had.
Till she saw the spilled ink over the paper scrolls, dried long ago. The house was dim, bathed in soft gray light that slipped through the clouds outside.
And that box. Curiousity got the best of her, and once she opened it, Shinobu froze for a heartbeat, eyes widening despite herself. Inside layed a neatly folded kimono. Not of simple design, but silk and smooth fabric white as snow. The design of various flowers painted the kimono in vibrant colors, giving it an elegant appearance.
Even after all this time, he still found new ways to leave her speechless.
She folded the kimono neatly back into its resting place, and stored the box where she kept her valuable things.
Shinobu walked over to her window and saw small snowflakes fall gently on the wet streets from last nights harsh storm.
She slipped out of the house with the white butterfly haori that once belonged to her sister hugging her small frame. She went to the marketplace to buy a small bag of rice with the small money she had left.
"Did you hear? Some girls in the district went missing."
Shinobu paused. The low and anxious tones of the women nearby a stall caught her attention.
"Yes. Another one vanished last night a few streets away."
Shinobu clutched the bag of rice in her hands, her head low and eyes growing with anxiety. She didn't want to think that Doma was responsible for any of the missing people.
Yet, deep inside, she knew he had something to do with this. Every whisper sunk deeper and deeper the more she eavesdropped to the nearby chatter.
Listening became more unbearable as her anxiety grew. She payed for another bag of rice, and left as soon as she could.
The snow became stronger and heavier as darkness spilled over each house. Shinobu didn't light a single lantern that night at home, she foolishly thought that the darkness would keep him away.
Warmth cradled her curled body with all the blankets that cocooned her in her futon. Maybe he wouldn't come tonight, after all.
Three firm knocks came from her front door, causing her to jolt.
She slowly rose from her warm futon, and walked over to the paper door. She assumed that it might've been Doma, but his gentle moves that she knew suggested that he wouldn't knock this firmly. Knowing him, he'd slide the door open without waiting for her to answer.
She peeked as she slid the door barely a few inches open. To her surprise, she saw a young man no older than nineteen in a black uniform with a sheathed sword that rested on his hip.
"Apologies for the intrusion, but have you seen a suspicious man with hair white as snow around here?"
Shinobu gluped, before she slowly shook her head. "No. I'm afraid not."
The young man nodded, "Thank you for your answer. Please do not go outside late, and lock any entrance you might have in your home. If you do see a man with snow white hair, avoid him at all costs."
Shinobu watched the man walk away in the dim , snowy streets. She slid her door closed to prevent the house from getting colder.
"Oh dear." The voice sang behind her.
"That wasn't very honest now of you, Shinobu."
Her head snapped to the direction of the familiar voice. Doma sat by the low table cross legged, his iridescent rainbow eyes shimmered faintly in the dark.
"Trying to avoid me by keeping your lights out won't work, and it's not very kind, y'know. Have I not been kind to you? Have I not cherished you?"
Shinobu's heart skipped a beat. She stayed frozen as he rose from his seat and headed towards the exit of her house. Shinobu knew instantly what his intentions were.
She moved, faster than her mind could commanded her body to, until she stood in front of him, blocking his way.
"Doma, please — Don't. That young man is innocent, he didn't want to do anything bad."
He tilted his head "Don't what? Protect you? Anyone that looks at you that way shouldn't live, Shinobu. He's dangerous."
"He wasn't intending to do anything! He only asked a simple question." She protested anyway, hoping that he'd listen to her desperate pleas.
"Ohhhh you're worried about him? That's adorable, Shinobu-chan."
"I'm not joking, Doma!" She said firmer than she intended to, but that was mainly her fear speaking.
"If you truly care about me, then don't even go near that man!"
For a moment, there was silence. For the first time, his smile faltered slighlty. He then put his hands gently on her shoulders.
"I care more about you than you can imagine, Shinobu. Protecting you is what I swore to do. That's why I must dispose of that slayer." He spoke in a low tone. Then, it shifted in a more cheerful one.
"But worry not! I'll be granting him paradise at the same time." His voice said the horrific sentence so cheerfully as if he were announcing a sunny weather.
"Doma-"
"Shhh." He placed a long, slender finger on her lips, silencing her.
"Don't worry, little one. I told you, I love you — didn't I? You shouldn't worry your pretty little head about things like this. They're mine to take care of."
He gently moved her aside as he slid the door open. He cast her a glance over his shoulder as snow started to fall on his head.
"Be good now, little butterfly. I'll be back before even the tea cools."
He disappeared before Shinobu could say another word.
Her chest tightened as images entered her mind of what could've happen to that poor slayer, so without any hesitation — She grabbed her haori that was folded neatly on a nearby cushion and ran barefoot in the cold snow. The cold was unbearable, but she didn't care. Not when someone else's life was in line.
She wouldn't let anyone die because of her again.
She looked to the dim street to her left, empty. She ran a direction across, also empty.
Panic gnawed at her chest, she looked — panicked purple eyes looked desperatly for any sign of Doma or the slayer in the dark, snow covered streets.
She saw a faint silhouette.
She ran towards it, recognizing it to be Doma immediately. The blood on his hands that shimmered under the faint lantern light caught her eyes instantly.
"...You killed him..." A shaky breath left her lips in a puff of white.
"I did. He was dangerous, little butterfly. Remember? You're all safe now."
She didn't answer him, She couldn't. Her shaky eyes were kept on his blood stained hands. Doma followed her gaze to where it lingered.
"Oh dear. What a mess." He plucked a silk cloth from his sleeve, then wiped his hands with delicate care, his smile never wavering.
"There. Good as new" He discarded the now bloody cloth aside.
Shinobu couldn't stop shivering, not just from the intense cold, but from what she just witnessed. An innocent life taken. Because of her.
She didn't realize that Doma was now standing in front of her, closer than before. Her gaze slowly ascended to meet his, each breath left her lips that vanished into the winter air.
"...Why?" Tears welled up in her eyes, as the word slipped out before she could stop it.
"Because I love you." He answered as if he was asked a casual question.
Without any warning, he then lifted her off the ground — making Shinobu gasp as she grabbed onto his shoulders.
"Doma-"
"Shh." He interrupted gently, holding her as if she was made out of porcelain. "You'll wake the neighbours."
He wiped a stray tear off of her face as he cradled her body against his. "Don't cry, Shinobu. You don't have to understand everything at once, and that's okay." He shifted her body closer.
"Soon, you'll see the true depths of what I have to offer."
Suddenly, she felt light weight on her; with warmth. He covered her with something, a blanket perhaps. Maybe even a piece of clothing. She wasn't sure.
The ground vanished beneath her as they moved, faster than the wind, faster than any thought. She could have fought him, hit him in the chest, or face — but what was the point? He wasn't human, he was everything she didn't understand.
When they arrived, he gently set her on the ground. Shinobu looked at the large building, a temple it seemed.
"This is the temple I told you about."
The Eternal Paradise Faith
"From tonight on...It's ours. Every flower, Every room, Every space in it."
"I don't want any of this."
"Of course you don't. Humans are always afraid of joy, but that's alright." He turned his head down to her from the towering building.
"I'll teach you how to be happy."
The doors yawned open, spilling lantern light and warmth into the snow.
Shinobu froze.
Inside, the temple seemed dreamlike. Sakura willows draped from the rafters like a gentle waterfall, their pale blossoms glowing in the soft golden light of oil lamps. Tatami mats scrubbed clean, and low tables bore offerings of fruit, incense and lacquered bowls.
And flowers — Everywhere. Camellias, roses, peonies, all arranged in delicate harmony.
It was all too beautiful.
Doma turned to her. "See? Isn't it lovely? It's much more warmer and comfy than that little house of yours."
She slowly turned to him "...Why would you bring me here?"
Cool, long fingers brushed her cheek gently.
"Because I love you." he whispered. "And I can't let the world ruin you. Here, no one will hurt you or touch you. No one will look at you but me. Isn't that wonderful?"
Shinobu's pulse pounded in her ears, her body screamed to run. But the sliding door behind her shut closed with a final click.
"Now then! I'll get you some tea. Your body needs warmth after all of that cold it endured." He said in a sing sang tone.
She sat on the tatami, her hands trembling as he was pouring tea from a teapot into a cup.
He was pouring it so casually, as if it were some ordinary evening.
As if he just hadn't killed an innocent man.
He slid the cup of tea towards her. "Drink. Don't stay cold."
She only looked at the steaming tea in front of her.
"Still frightened?"
She looked at him, he rested his chin in his hand
"That's alright. You'll learn in no time. This is paradise. No fear, no struggling, no sadness."
Her lips parted for a moment before words left her. "....And if I wanted to leave?"
"Oh little butterfly." He shifted his body so that he was now sitting cross legged. "Where would you go? It's so cold, dirty and horrifying out there. You can only expect pain and constant sadness." He brushed a stray lock behind her ear. "But here...you'll never suffer again."
She forced her gaze down, hiding the storm in her eyes. Think. There has to be a door. A window. Anything.
A sudden, gentle touch that caressed her cheek interrupted her thoughts. She looked up. He was caressing her with his fingers.
"There there. All safe, see?"
For a brief moment, Shinobu wanted to lean into the comforting touch, and forget everything that once crossed her mind. But the next words shattered the illusion.
"You won't get far if you run. The snow is thick, darkness surrounds the woods everywhere, and I..."
He leaned in, those rainbow eyes never leaving her. His voice dropping to a whisper. His fingers slipped from her cheek to her chin.
"...am very, very fast."
Her breath hitched.
His smile only widened. "I'd hate to bring you back hurt."
Then — he leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead.
"Sleep well, little one." He murmured as he rose. "Tomorrow, I'll show you the gardens."
And like that, he glided out of the room, leaving her in the golden glow of lantern light. Her skin still tingled where his lips had brushed.
She looked around the room, her gaze falling on the futon prepared for her, the lacquered furniture and the walls. Her eyes were searching for any possible exit. It didn't take long till she saw a shoji door that led outside. Perfect.
She just had to be quiet. Careful.
Her mind replayed his words, which made her stop mid track.
"You won't get far if you run"
Was this truly a smart move? What if she got caught?
She couldn't waste any time overthinking. She slid the door open as the cold gnawed at her skin, and ran into the snowy, dark woods without looking back.
