Summary
A cold breeze was in the air— the rushing feel of spring starting to emerge after winter. The scene was truly something out of a poet’s vision. If only that poet were here though. Instead it was Faer rushing through the streets, trying to find something suitable for her… partner? Husband?
It was complicated at this point, but she did have a ring on her finger.
Speaking of, the hopeless romantic had all but begged her for gifts on the universal day of love. William had eyed flowers, candy, and chocolate shaped into hearts or stamped with cheesy quotes. Now, he didn’t actually say anything, but the small glimmer of longing in his eyes the past week said enough.
-
Or, a domestic modern AU where Faer gets William gifts for Valentine's Day.

Summary
William was currently, almost exactly, 10 minutes late to work this morning. He hadn’t had the time to get breakfast, barely had enough time to get dressed anyway. So when he saw the bakery he hadn’t been to, he decided if he was going to be late, he wouldn’t die of hunger on the way.
The chime on the door sounded as he pushed it open. The smell of fresh pastries and bread swamped over his senses, along with a hint of vanilla. It calmed him down as he went up to the currently unmanned counter and considered his options.
A morning roll would suffice, he guessed. For a man in a hurry.
A crash sounded from somewhere in the kitchen before a woman stumbled out. Not in an apron, but instead in what looked like formal clothing. She was quite cute. No, that wasn’t quite the first thought he wanted after seeing the baker.
“Hi- terribly sorry. The ovens are broken so—” The words were rushed, but even if they weren’t, William wasn’t hearing them anymore. His eyes were still locked on her as he argued in his head.

Summary
Even now, he knew his sentence was only for show. The values this town’s founders held dear have fallen away.
Someone pushed him onto the platform, his restrained arms unable to do much. All he could do was move, step-by-step, onto where he was to be hanged.
Well, after the priest finished his spiel.
“—ll th—!”
“—ill them—!”
“—Kill them!”
William ignored the crowd's chanting. He gazed towards the sky again, another rumble reverberated through the clouds. It was just in time for a rain droplet to roll down his cheek.
She had better not come over, it was enough trouble as is for him to have concealed where she was.
The rope was wrapped— more pulled— around his neck. It was nerve wracking, so to speak. To be fair, he was about to die.

Or, William is about to get hanged for being acquainted with witch Faer.

Summary
Faer was starting to regret her decision in following William all the way to the exhibition. He’d been insisting since last week, a new exhibit on paintings just opened. Some new rising artist by the name of ‘Elberta Smidt’.
The problem? She had been coming down with something just a few days before and put it off for the trip. It would’ve gone away on its own, she thought. A stupid thought.
So, while William was basically jumping from one painting to the next, marvelling at them, she followed ten steps behind him. Her eyes were burning even as she tried to blink it away, the cool air from the air conditioning felt like a blizzard against her skin, and it felt like someone had taken an axe to her head.

Summary
William hadn’t meant to get lost in the forest while foraging, but it happened anyway. The towering trees seemed to curve inwards the longer he went down this way. All this because he had wanted to find herbs to complete his book.
He groaned after finding the marked tree he'd passed four times now. Never getting out wasn't a prospect he wanted to put much thought into.
He was about to walk past it when he saw something on the ground.
A rock.
It didn't look out of place, but William could've sworn that wasn't there before. At least not that big, he'd like to think he would remember if it was. Maybe he'd lost his mind.
He sighed, kneeling down to look at it better. It was a smooth stone, sharper on one horizontal end, but still blunt. It almost looked like it was pointing somewhere.
At this point, William would take his chances with anything. Even if it was something his addled thoughts tampered with.

Summary
The first time a human had the courage to go up to her and live, it was a man.
He had an iron weapon in hand as he went up to her circle, stopping at its edge.
“Fae! I've come to ask for your presence!” he shouted, as if she was some ghost to be summoned.
She wasn't doing anything particularly important, so she parted the tree line. How boring, it was another hunter.
The man looked shocked for a moment before shaking himself off. She heard him mumble as she approached.
“This is stupid… I'm going to get killed…”
She stopped at the edge of her ring and stared at him. The human didn't seem like a hunter though.
“Okay, I can do this.” He looked her up and down, stating rather than asking.
“Faer. That's your name, is it not?”

Summary
There were no words to describe how much William didn't want to be here.
Icarus had tricked him into being here in the first place.
“It'll be fun, I swear! I even found this on the auction that'll be held after the ball.”
There was no auction. The announcement— wherever he got it from— was for an event being held elsewhere.
Now, the man wouldn't even show his face. He was probably hiding away with Iocus in some corner.

Summary
The stone bench looking out to the castle garden was a less than ideal place for both of them to be, but she couldn’t stand the stifling atmosphere of her father’s study. She had sought out her knight and dragged him off castle grounds.
A minute between them passed before she finally got bored and poked his arm. “William.”
Another poke. “William?”
He stayed motionless with only his even breathing indicating that he was alive. She sighed at the lack of entertainment from the man, deciding to leave him to slumber.
A walk around the garden sounded nice, especially with the flowers right now in bloom. She’d hide away here and wait for father to cool off. Her lips tilted up at the panic William would go into if he found her gone.

Summary
The townspeople often told of blue floating fires that led people to what they desired, or led them astray. Some even said they'd seen it firsthand and made a fortune from following it.
Now, William never believed them, but it was no coincidence that his eyes fooled him with that exact image as he was on a path across towns.
The flame danced around in the air where he stared, but no heat came from where it was.
Curious, he reached a hand to try and touch it. Only for it to dissipate once he got within distance, flickering to life a few steps away in front of him again.
He narrowed his eyes at it, picking up his bag and huffing. If it wanted to play that way then.

Summary
Faer rarely came home tired, but when she did, it would always be a bad day. From the aching in her neck or the bone deep tiredness that wrestled with her mind all afternoon.
A month ago, she’d have dealt with it alone, plopping down onto the couch with a tub of ice cream and playing whatever was on the TV as she tried to gain enough motivation to get up again. Which ended up making the gaping maw of apathy even worse.
A month ago, she had to make do with a dingy apartment.
But today wasn’t a month ago and she still felt the same way. Her body unable to move from the couch as she waited for time to pass by.
Today, there was so much more to do.

Summary
She was peaceful, like she was simply sleeping. The too even breathing made her look lifeless.
Faer wasn't meant to look like that. Never like that. She was always a woman of action, each facial expression dynamic as she smirked or scowled. In no world would she ever look so… empty.
William slowly approached the body, eyeing the coins and finding one thing written in all of them. Written in an old language he only knew to read because Faer wasn't interested in the dictionary she got a year ago.
It was uneven, like a crazed being had taken a rock and poured its heart into carving each and every coin with the same word.
Dream.

Summary
“What exactly—” Faer lifted a piece of paper held between her fingers. “—is the meaning of this?”
A tankard of ale could fall over right now, and it wouldn't be heard over her fellow guildmates’ cheering.
“Congratulations—”
“I didn't think you'd be the one for this, but I'll take it!”
“I won the bet, give me that—!”
She turned the paper over and saw ‘William’ scrawled over it. She glared at the laughter resounding from one of the patrons.
Before she dragged one of the louder ones outside for a beating, one of them finally cleared his throat and explained.
“See, we had a…” he snapped his fingers as he thought, “…a lottery sort of thing? You know the gala mission right?”
Faer raised an eyebrow. The undercover commission? They had insisted upon completing it since last week.
He waved his hand. “What matters is he got your name and you got his, so…”
He trailed off, letting her piece it together on her own.

Summary
William gave a quick hiss, warning whatever it was that he wasn’t going down without a fight. He’d valued himself as quite a good striker, having brought down armies on his own.
Instead of a voice, he found himself faced with the shape of an eye. White at its edges and with a circle at its center that gave nothing but the void. One blinked through the darkness, before another followed. More and more opened in the corners where even he couldn’t see until they covered its entirety.
A frozen chill ran up his spine, feeling it even in his scales as he might have just realised he picked the wrong temple to mess with today.
