The world is divided in two: before and after. The sky split apart by the scream of a guillotine blade. In his dreams his hands are bloodied.

    Summary

He almost forgets, sometimes, that Georgia’s seen him vulnerable: showing up on her doorstep at two a.m., stumbling, pale and bleeding from one nostril and clutching at his side, his breath coming in choked-sounding rattles, saying she’s gotta drive him to the hospital. He stayed there for three weeks. Two ribs were broken, his collarbone dislocated, and his lung punctured through. That couldn’t have been more than a month after she’d first hooked up with him.

    Summary

The young woman was standing to his left, leaning against one of the cargo holds, and her feet were the first things Carter saw: her feet clad in a pair of black, steel-toed combat boots, with leather straps and barely susceptive heels. When she walked, the steely tips clinked against the ground.

The whole world was lopsided, through a blur of haze, as he blinked.

For a moment her face suspended above his, glowing and radiant beneath the lights. The face of a mother suspending over the baby’s crib.

“There,” Sammy Bushey said. The flicker of a smile. “That’s better.”

She lifted the bottle in her hand to her lips, and took an easy, satisfied swig.

In which Carter lands in a completely foreign universe and encounters the last person in this Multiverse he is ever likely to meet again. And it all escalates from there.

    Summary

For a moment Linda Everett froze, looking down at the wooden back of the mirror, and in this moment of bewildered terror what came to her was not her mother’s warning ill luck, but a poem she’d studied in high school. Some line in the middle of a Tennyson poem. She bent down and took it with both hands, feeling the almost delirious horror running in her veins like dark roots.

Parts of the mirror’s surface were still intact, but there were ugly, spindly cracks hacking the reflection apart like the cracks of thin ice across a frozen pond. She held it up, was trying to prop it up against the mantlepiece when she saw the reflections, both hers and the one that stood behind her.

She saw her own face, white and flabbergasted, grotesque in the broken reflection, and Carter Thibodeau, standing there in a pair of muddied jeans and a blue cop’s shirt rolled up at the sleeves, the thin dark mirror-cracks cutting lopsided across his waist, his shoulder, his nose, his chin, rendering in fractured pieces a bulky, looming boogeyman.

    Summary

When he looked across again, he saw that Mel was chewing on his lip.

“Maybe that’s not such a great idea,” Mel said.

Slowly, turning his face, Carter paused. “The fuck is up with you?”

For one moment Mel looked uncertain. Then he said, quietly, the flush beginning to recede from his face: “I just want you to think about what you’re doing.”

Carter and Mel meet up in an alternate universe. Finally discuss what they've done under the Dome. Things get ugly.

    Summary

They discovered the compasses about a week ago, and since then, none of them had gone back to breathe the foul, rotten warm air under the Dome. The power of the force-field powered the liquid, smooth as lamp-oil, shimmering faintly blue as it ran into compasses hooked up to an invisible generator. They made the devices for themselves. They experimented, and they ventured out, away from their home universe, to explore.

    They escaped into the Multiverse.

Some called it greatness and some called it power. To Carter, it is simpler than either.
