They continued like that for two months. They’d meet for a few moments, exchange books, talk a little about what interested them, then they’d go their separate ways. They often texted when reading. Sometimes, Mel would text to point out an error in a potion or recount her own experience with a spell, other times Abigael would text her about how she agreed or disagreed with either Mel’s notes or the author. They slowly went from spellbooks and literary classics to lesser-known books, stories they enjoyed for the sake of enjoyment and talked about those.

Mel and Abigael talk about books and fall for each other a little because of it.

But today…

Bookmarker's Notes
Got most of the way through Year 4, dunno what chapter though, maybe a 5th of it yet. I don't mind the concept or the characterizations really, it's just getting rather boring. There's enough there to maintain mild interest and I am wondering exactly what will happen that'll make Harry acquiesce to being crowned King of Avalon and all that entails; it's just all so fucking slow and expository and entirely focused on their world building (which is politically complicated but otherwise fairly basic so far) and how capable of a Lord Harry is even at age 12
(which is bullshit and unrealistic especially considering that the Dursley's behavior basically follows cannon though moderated by his primary teachers and Harry's 'I'm not worthy schtick is completely absent which doesn't work for me with the way his upbringing is treated and the fact that the author has him talking with a therapist for years but shows none of his struggles with his emotions etc. It's like they thought that by giving him a therapist for his last few years of primary means they didn't have to spend any time extrapolating Harry's emotions.)
but I don't give 2 shits about all the politics and have willingly suspended disbelief long enough without getting anything back that I'm just done with this at least for now. The whole general thing has potential, it's just not done well. It's competently done but not well done and that difference is showing itself vastly in this series.
And that mini parenthesis rant made me realize the main reason this story has become so boring to me. There's very little emotional exposition and pretty much no opportunity for emotional connection to anyone. If this was original work, not fanfiction with characters I'm already emotionally connected to, I likely wouldn't have lasted through even half of Year One. It's all exposition of this authors development of pureblood/wizarding culture and politics and how Harry has power within both those spheres and chooses to utilize that. period. end of sentence. There's nothing about how Harry is affected by the power and its implications or how he struggles with it or him really having any difficulties with any of it at all. It's just very one dimensional.
And the relationship with Charlie (which is what got me here btw) is scarily underdeveloped (frequent mention of the fact that they have regular mirror calls and are falling in love with each other) doesn't actually show them falling in love or give them an emotional connection. It also seems very unrealistic to me (for both of their characters) for them to have this understanding that they love each other but that Harry's to young so they're both sleeping around with other people and aware of it as regards the other. Charlie would either be angsting about it or ignoring it or trying to avoid it, not just waiting for Harry to get old enough. And Harry would take the wait as a rejection or push the boundaries or decide to fold it all up inside himself but he wouldn't be off having sex with Blaise and not the twin in particular while biding his time until he's old enough to jump Charlie. It's just not . . . accurate.
