For the moment. He ain't sure how much longer he has, seeing as those flames are set to devour the place like a ravenous beast. He presses back further, and he ain't sure quite exactly how he's gonna get out of this, but what he does know it ain't gonna be by going forward.
He's gotta go on back.

He ain't got no money on him. No, that's long been spent, wasted foolishly on drink a few weeks back when he was drowning out his sorrows. Since then he's been scrounging. Picking pockets where he can and robbing folk on the trail when there's been nobody around. But this close to town he ain't like chancing it; hard telling what kind of law was about. Last thing he needed was to end up behind bars.
So he'll keep his head down, see if there's honest work about. It's a small town, just as many rural towns are. Big enough for the folk who live there, but not big enough to draw all manner of folk in. Arthur knows he getting looks; he sticks out like a sore thumb on the account he ain't shaved nor washed for a time and his clothes are quite a sight. If he can find something, he might have enough to get himself decent. If not, he figures the river works just as well.

So Arthur does. Of course he does. Dutch calls, and he comes, because what else would he do?

Set in Cañon City, Colorado (1894), John has yet to warm up to the newly arrived working girl, Abigail (thank you, pimp Uncle). He can’t get used to the fact that she can open her legs to everyone but him, and it gnaws at him more than he wants to admit. Conflicted and stubborn, he doesn’t even know if he likes her—or if he’s just jealous. Meanwhile, Arthur watches with quiet amusement, clearly seeing John as the new butt of the joke, and John feels every glance and smirk like a silent jab.

In a town like this, the law was near obsolete. The sheriff's nothing more than a small spit of a shack with a single cell to house unruly drunks and so they figured there'd be no challenge in taking what they desired.
But had he looked closer, Hosea would have noted the worn revolvers in every holster, the tell tale sign of weapons well used. He'd of seen the gruffness on each face, the lines etched deep in their features from long and hard trails. Of years spent standing for and defending what was rightfully theirs. A town laden with folk who had more mettle than any pansy sheriff might hope to hold.
A town of men, steadfast and unafraid to shoot first and ask questions later.
It was a venture well failed before it had even begun.

It was almost nine years ago, and John Marston had found acceptance in Arthur being gone, despite what he initially believed as him having accepted it already. But it didn’t stop him from thinking about the man who saved him and his family; it likely never would. It didn’t stop him from feeling a gnaw ache in his heart, sore enough for him to lightly tug onto it through his vest. For a time when John wanted no involvement in any conversation surrounding Arthur, that he was gone and that there was nothing more to it - perhaps he was more so trying to convince someone else of that notion rather than his wife and son.
Or: John goes to visit Arthur's grave as usual, only to see a familiar face standing before his grave. The two reconnect and have a heart-to-heart over their mutual loss.
