The year is 2039.
In the aftermath of the android revolution, Detroit is overrun by CyberLife’s shady dealings and the uprising of a rogue deviant faction that actively opposes Markus' ideals, wreaking havoc all across the city.
As a CyberLife analyst specialized in behavioral assessments for androids, you've been tasked by the FBI to work closely with former deviant hunter Connor at the DPD—your job is to oversee his conduct, making sure he doesn't further jeopardize the corporation’s credibility.
But when Connor's newfound deviancy forces him to confront the inevitable feelings and urges that come with it, there's no more room for professionalism between you. Add to that, you're not exactly immune to his charm, and before you know it, he ends up in your bed.
And that complicates things.

Summary
It’s hard to be vulnerable, because being vulnerable means letting down your shield, letting people in, letting them see the real you. All your cracks and imperfections. You're more susceptible to judgement, and no one likes to be judged. Gavin knew all too well how that game went. Every time he let someone be part of his world, they wrung him dry for their own gain, spat him out when they grew bored of him. Bullies are bullies because they project their insecurities onto those that they deem as weaker than themselves. It makes them feel less scared.
See, Gavin hadn't always been a massive dick. Growing up, him and Tina were attached at the hip. Never apart, shared and did everything together. And, literally everything; it was almost like Gavin lived at her house. Everyone liked him, he was popular in school. But that all changed the second he became bitter and drove everyone away. Shut out his friends, his parents, his coworkers. He didn't even try to get along with people anymore because it didn't seem worth it.
That's why he doesn't understand why the fuck Nines is trying so hard to get close. After everything he'd done, the shit Gavin said, why did Nines still want to be part of his life? It was frustrating.

What is the best course of action when Connor can't figure out the cause of deviancy quick enough? Spitting out another android with more emotional constipation than the first one (and sarcasm to match). Gavin Reed is forced to work with said android after he shows up and saves him during a chase. Now the only thing he can do to escape their partnership is to be as rude as possible to the son of a gun and hope he gives up soon.

The world went spiralling and before he registered what had happened, his shock and fatigue tipped the scale and sent him downwards.
His legs had failed him, so he landed hard on his knees, trying to catch himself with his hands and spilling coffee everywhere.
Letting out a pained grunt and inhaling sharply, Gavin looked up to see Nines heading towards the exit."Wait!"
Faced with death, self-hatred and emerging desire, Gavin reminiscences about his past and finds himself unable to cope. Good thing he has his partner to help him, right after they get into a very necessary fight that helps them see eye to eye again and awakens some feelings Gavin can't quite admit to himself. Shenanigans ensue as the two partners start to slowly become something more.

Gavin leaned forward, keeping his voice low. “Congratulations on officially being my longest partner as of tomorrow.”
“Who says I’m not requesting a transfer tonight?” Nines retorted without missing a beat.
“Pfff whatever asshole,” Gavin scoffed in fake offence, “You love me as your partner, I’m a fucking delight to be around.”
“Well, I suppose I would have trouble finding another competent detective to partner with. Certainly not someone who is as efficient as you.”
“True, I am amazing at my job, aren’t I.”
“At least you’re humble about it.” Nines smiled.
After a moment of debating, Gavin leaned forward again to whisper, “Hey, uh… so my sister wanted me to invite you for dinner. You know, to thank you for putting up with me and all that. I um, I know you don’t eat or anything so it’s fine if you don’t want to but, uh, she’s nosey and wants to meet ‘the crazy motherfucker that can put up with Gavin Reed’ …her words not mine.”
“Okay,” Nines said simply, “I think that would be enjoyable.”

Summary
There came a noticeable shift in public opinion regarding androids, but society remains divided. Reports of missing androids amplified after the android revolution, leaving lead detective Gavin Reed overwhelmed (and irritated).
A change of pace is granted to Gavin when two humans are murdered in an alleyway one night. What appears to be an open-and-shut-case reveals itself to be something much more complicated. Solving the case would complicate itself even further with Gavin and Connor being forced to work with each other.
Whilst balancing work-life, Gavin and Connor try to navigate their personal life, their relationships and what it means to be human.

Part of the Living for Beginners series but can be read separately.
The Interrogation - or one version of it - from Gavin's PoV with a small attempt at justifying his anti-android and general assholery. In terms of his sentiments on androids, there is the tiniest suggestion that maybe, just maybe, he might have reasons to be sour about Connor beyond simply being a prick for the sake of it. Or maybe not. But we'll go with maybe. As to why he seems to hate Hank - canon doesn't tell us but we can make a few decent guesses if we were trying to find a half-decent reason for it.

Little did the two know that the drug-dealer case they were assigned to, was just the beginning of a much bigger storm coming their way and in order to resolve it, they will have to put their major differences and grudges aside.
