Valerie’s pain is constant, her cyberware misfiring, the ghost of Johnny now fully gone. Judy remains steady, grounding her through nightmares, relapse, and recovery. Together, they share intimate moments of care, humor, and aching tenderness showering slowly, eating burnt toast, dodging corporate fallout, and dreaming of a quieter life. V takes a swallow of her tequila and can’t help but notice it’s Johnny’s preferred brand. For some reason that, of all things, really sets her off.
“If you spent the past fifty years in a coma,” she blurts out. “Regrettin’ to hell and back everything that went down ‘tween you and the person you cared about most, an’ then by some miracle, you actually get the chance to say what you wish you coulda said back then...”
She’s aware it’s gotta be the liquor talkin’ at this point, but fuck, ain’t no one else in the goddamn world she can vent to about this shit. “I mean, why the fuck would you pass that up?”
It registers, then, that Kerry’s starin’ at her strangely, mouth slightly agape. “Wha—what’d you say?” he stammers.
Just then Johnny snaps into being, interposing himself between her and Kerry. “Not another fuckin’ word, V.”--

He was not wrong, every Netrunner eventually took it too far, burned too bright, and then they were gone. Even Alt.
