In reality, it was the result of a contact experiment carried out on the ancient being known as Adam, the First Angel. Now, fifteen years later, Adam's offspring, the Angels, have returned to try and reclaim their role as the dominant species on Earth. Humanity's only hope? The humanoid biomechanical weapon systems known as the Evangelions. Piloted by children whose mothers souls have been imprisoned within the cores of the cybernetic monsters, they are the last hope for mankind, and the only thing standing between the Angels and their goal of causing the catacylmic Third Impact. Gendo Ikari has sent for his son, Shinji Ikari, to be the Third Child, and to pilot the Evangelion known as Unit-01. However, Shinji doesn't exist anymore. And Aiko Ikari is not the broken child that her father desired her to be.

On his 7th birthday, Shinji meets an odd girl who shows him kindness when no one else will. So he runs away with her and they live a difficult, but happy life in the forest. All while being protected by the distant and ominous 'Shadow Man'.
But, many years later, Shinji is called upon to join NERV and save humanity from the Angels. Yet this Shinji is far different from the timid boy his father expected. Years of hunting and isolation from society has turned Shinji into a bitter and resentful young man.
But it is thanks to Edward, who has bonded and stayed with him for all these years, that Shinji is friendly and courteous to those who he believes deserve his kindness. And it is because of his unconditional love for Edward that Shinji takes on the challenge of piloting the Evangelion and gladly puts his life on the line to protect the innocent.
But Edward, along with her Tanuki companion Loki, intends to use her hacking skills to help Shinji fight the Angels and save humanity. This leads to them making new friends, rediscovering old bonds, and finding the truth about both the Shadow Man and Edward's mother.
