When the time arises to swing the ax, something happens, and it throws Patrick off his game. Maybe it was the Xanax he took that led him to go along with it, or maybe Patrick, without truly understanding, was ready to accept change in his life for once. Just a small change, though. But that in itself has its own problems. Like unexpected feelings. Then again, those may not be so bad once you get used to them (if that's possible).
