In canon, we’re told Lance got his Altean marks as a reminder of his love for Allura.
But what if he got them through different means? What if they stood as a living memento for him to look at every time he sees his own image, reflecting his inherent belonging to the lions as their paladin?
His story may have begun in the sunny beaches of Varadero, but Lance has traveled far further than he ever thought he would, sprawling out across the universe with first Blue, then Red. But what if there comes a time after the original lion swap in which Keith and Shiro are both indisposed and Lance needs to step up to the plate and pilot Black?
Will she accept him? Or will the barrier remain raised once more, leaving the fate of the universe on the wrong side of history?

Summary
Lance has an abusive father who has used him to basically sell off to other noblemen in an arranged marriage. Lance’s first two husbands mysteriously died before his father was finally able to climb the ranks of finding a duke to marry Lance off to.
Keith does not care about the arranged marriage or the status of Lance’s father and family. He just wanted to marry Lance because he likes Lance as a person. Keith is also a genuinely great duke who has created his dukedom and specifically goes out of his way to hire those who have physical disabilities who would otherwise not be able to have jobs.
Keith is a half-monster and believes that he is a hideous creation and therefore creates walls around Lance until Lance in his Lanceness breaks him down. Angst and misunderstandings ensue but in the end they have a great relationship
TL;DR: Keith is bad at feelings and is a pining mess. Lance is a disaster who’s trying to break Keith's walls down to get to know the real him. In the end they become an unstoppable couple and a force to be reckoned with.
This work was inspired and based upon the story of Disobey the Duke if you Dare that is available on Manta Comics. I do not own the story or the characters.

He’d tried to handle it himself. Stole Pidge’s headphones, hummed out loud to himself; hell, he even left the bathroom sink running for some white noise. None of it worked. None of it was the same as the constant sound of someone breathing right next to you, the grumbles of their snores and strange mutterings of their sleep-talk. The very thing Lance hated with a passion turned out to be the one thing that actually helped his insomniac ass actually sleep. Mother nature, you trick-ass bitch. You have a personal problem.
Now, of course there was an easy solution to this. He shared the castle with six other people — one of them his Garrison roommate! Surely, he could bunk with someone else.
But… no one else seemed to have trouble sleeping. At least, not for the same reason as Lance. And as much as Lance liked to play the obnoxious role, as much as nothing was funnier than pushing just the right buttons to make someone else explode… he couldn’t be that much of a nuisance. It was too much.
So Lance got real used to being sleep deprived.

Shiro, Keith, Pidge, Hunk, Allura, and Coran are all getting along well in the castle of lions, fighting against the Galra forces and freeing captured planets. They're all fighting so hard, quickly bonding with one another, fighting and gaining the strength to save the galaxy from the same fate the Alteans experienced. They're all becoming a family, though rough and bumpy in the beginning, they're blending together as the war acts like sandpaper, smoothing the edges. All the edges except for tiny rough patch called 'Lance'.
Or the one where everyone in the castleship are bonding and becoming a team and family, except Lance just can't seem to get over his insecurities to join them. While he may not think so, they want him included just as badly as he wants to be included.

The only problem is, Lance and Keith's trauma go deeper than the others realize. Coincidentally, their shared trauma also brings them closer together.

Well, now that he’s thinking about it, he’s always been kind of a disappointment compared to his team from the start. Pidge and Hunk are the genius prodigy and engineer, Keith’s the greatest pilot of his generation, Shiro’s a legend who survived being a Galra prisoner for an entire year, and Allura and Coran are literally the last known survivors of their entire race. And Lance is just… A boy from Cuba. Who happened to be there in the cave to bond with Blue the first day they found her. And even when they all switched lions when Shiro went missing, Blue blocked him out and bonded with Allura the moment Lance left to find Red. And the only reason Red let him in in the first place was because Keith bonded with Black.
No special achievements, no special talents. He really has nothing to offer like the rest of them do.
