Grogu sat down next to the dead bird, covered its upper back with his hands, searched for the heart through the Force and opened himself up into a channel of life force energy, just like he had practiced so many times on various jungle animals as well as on the other students whenever anyone was sick or had a cut or a bruise. It always worked, it had to work, it had to work…
But something was different. The bird’s tissues repelled him. Grogu wailed, struggling to force his way in, but it was like the harder he worked, the more every cell in the corpse closed up. Only when he felt a familiar hand on his back did he let go and give into tears instead. Master Luke pulled him into his arms, rocked from side to side and let him cry.
“It’s not yours to heal. Grogu, you have the gift of healing for a reason. So that you’d use it for the benefit of those who need it. But some things are beyond you. When somebody’s time has come, you can’t interfere.”
