Marcy never wanted to go back to Hawkins. Lab or no Lab, it isn’t exactly a place with happy memories. But here she is, because her stupid brother dragged the three of them back. To make an already bad thing worse, she hasn’t gotten a wink of sleep, her head hurts, and just the other day, she got a nosebleed out of nowhere. And where the hell is that ticking coming from?
Jamie loves it here, and they only arrived a week ago. She’s made her first real friend, though Ricky and Marcy are wary of him. She doesn’t understand why. She did meet him in the woods, but why does that matter? She likes his loud music and big black hair. But something’s wrong. She hasn’t seen him in a while, and she heard people talking about him. Whispering things like, murderer, satanist, cult leader. Jaime doesn’t believe a word of it. And she’s going to prove that she’s right.
Ricky is worried. Worried about Marcy’s headaches, and Jaime’s new friend. Worried for Kali and Eleven, wherever they are. Why is he so worried? It’s probably nothing, but he can’t help but worry about the last thing Francine told him, so many years ago.
“We’ll all end up back here in Hawkins. One way or another.”

Francine was smart. She was kind. She lashed out and got angry, like Three. None of the other numbers--even the ones who had grown up outside of the lab--did that. They were too cowardly. Not Francine, who refused to go by her number. Not Francine, who ran away from her family, who only wanted to use her for her powers. Not Francine, who lied to Papa about what she saw in the tank.
The old Three would have hated her for that. He would’ve made her pay for it. But he wouldn’t do that to Francis. He cared for her, like he’d never cared for anyone else. They could’ve stuck together, Three and Six, forever.
But Francine cared about the others. And when her visions turned for the worse, and she and Nine pushed too far and were sent to the hospital, Three made a decision.
He’d leave. For her.

Four whimpers in fear, 'I'm scared.'
I play with my necklace trying to bury my anxiety down deeper. "I know, me too." I mumble to my reflection, "But, if we make ourselves big enough, they can't secret us away. I'm not smart enough or skilled enough to try a different way."
I adjust my wig, and tense further when someone knocks and shouts a five-minute warning at me.
'What if you're wrong?' Four can't help but worry about Papa finding them.
I nod at my reflection and stand tall. One deep breath later and I strut through the door and towards the shouts and screams. "That's why I chose the name Protea. If I'm wrong, we'll find another way to defy that asshole."
