Tony smooths out the sheets, shrugging his jacket off and draping it over the footboard of the bed. He pushes his purple sunglasses up into his messy hair.
He can't help but let his mind wander to... well, there wasn't a word for the relationship they shared, not really. Ex-boyfriend didn't really feel like it cut it. Old flame maybe. They had broken up when they were 18, and yet somehow every time he came back to town, he found himself in Steve's apartment. Which was often. More often than he should've. The last time he had seen Steve had been at Maria's funeral, but before that they had hung out together, they had slept together, they had laughed together. A 10-year long affair doomed to break them both from the start.
And here Tony was, back in Tupelo and ready to face the wounds he had long since decided to ignore.

Tony and Steve have got a good thing going, sharing a home with the Avengers and a bed with one another. Until a mission reveals that Bucky is still alive, and more than that, all three of them remember exactly how the two best friends felt (still feel) about each other.
It's easy for Tony to fall back on his failsafe trigger response to pain. Anger, sarcasm, and alcoholism are his crutches - but when Steve and Bucky return to the compound, knowing that the angry genius is the only person who can bring Bucky back properly, things don't seem so easy anymore; for any of them.
