Arthur returns from Avalon stepping from the lake into a new and confusing world that makes absolutely no sense to him and Merlin is not there waiting for him as he was supposed to be. Where is he? What happened to him?
Taken in by the kind family whose picnic he'd stumbled across upon his return, they fed him, clothed him, and provided a place for him to stay while they helped him adjust to this new life. A year and a half later, Arthur has a good job, a London flat, and even a car, but he is still searching for Merlin. He knows he is out there, he can feel him. He will not stop looking for him.
Trust destiny to bring Arthur to the last place he ever expected to find his loyal servant. The very mental hospital where he had been working for three months as an orderly. Merlin is broken and lost...shattered by fifteen hundred years of being alone, waiting for his king to return. It is up to Arthur to protect him from an abusive doctor and find a way to bring him back from the edge of madness.

When Arthur finds Merlin in the woods three weeks after he goes missing he is overjoyed. However Merlin is not the same and Arthur resolves to stand by him during his long recovery. Over the course of such he thinks he realizes what actually happened to Merlin, While he is wrong the aftereffects of his theory will lead to more than one secret being revealed.
