Summary
No one lives in a vacuum. We saw little of what happen to Jim and Bones between Jim's "death" and the memorial service almost a year later. This story fills in that gap using some characters we have grown to know and love. Second story in the series, many characters introduced in "How We Got Here". I have a list of characters published in this series to help with the story.

Summary
It was brought to my attention that if you didn't start the series from the first story it is hard to follow because of the OC's. I am including a list of the characters from both stories. It will be updated periodically.

Summary
Dean is in Heaven, but the promised peace has a bitter edge.
Castiel lies in the Empty, yet something inside him still stirs.
There’s a pain Dean can’t name, a love left unfinished, and a new threat creeping through the folds of eternity.
Old friends return, new bonds are forged, and the past — especially the parts that still burn — comes back demanding to be heard.A story about redemption, memory, courage… and choices that change everything.
P.s.
Before diving into this long-fic, I recommend checking out my standalone story titled “Happy Birthday, Cas!”, also published here on AO3.
It’s not required to follow the plot, but it adds a touch of sweetness and emotional context — especially if you enjoy Dean awkwardly trying to make his favorite angel happy.

Summary
Dean Winchester walks out of state prison with nothing but the clothes on his back and the ghosts of every mistake he’s ever made. Living under his brother’s roof means rules, curfews, and constant supervision—measures meant to keep him steady, to keep him clean. But loneliness is a dangerous thing, and Dean’s restlessness eventually leads him to the last place he ever thought he’d go: a church.
That’s where he meets Castiel—quiet, widowed, and hiding behind walls no one dares to climb. Dean’s never been good at boundaries, and something in Castiel’s sadness calls to him like a prayer. What begins as hesitant conversation turns into lingering glances, then late-night confessions whispered in the dark.
Dean doesn’t know if Castiel is salvation or sin—only that being near him feels like breathing for the first time. And when friendship starts to blur into something far more dangerous, both men are forced to decide whether love born in brokenness can still be holy.
**
Loneliness brought him to the church. Desire made him stay. Love might just save him.

Summary
Castiel's death hits Dean with a finality that leaves him drowning. Drowning in grief, in regret, in self-loathing, in heartbreak, in liquor. So when he stumbles across Lilly Sunder's notes on angels and, subsequently, a passage mentioning a gate to opening the Empty, he is determined to get Cas back.
No matter the cost.
Three weeks after Cas' return from the Empty, he is slowly healing from what the spell to retrieve him took. Three weeks after Cas' return, omens of angels and demons are scattered around the country. Three weeks after Cas' return, the Empty is bleeding.
Dean swore he would get Cas back no matter the cost. And he has, at the cost of endangering the balance of life and the afterlives. Dean has learned from dying and being the one left behind that it is easy to die for someone, but it is much harder to face the costs of surviving alongside them.
Even so, this time, Dean will not watch Cas die. And Cas has not and will not ever allow the same.

Summary
“Dean,” A low voice echoed from behind him, “wonderful to make your acquaintance. We’re very excited to have you join us, as i’m sure you’ve already heard.”
Dean turned around to find that the deep rumbling voice came from a handsome, rain-drenched man in a trench coat.
“T-thank you, I’m excited to be here,” He said, trying to catch the name on the man's ID badge attached to a bee lanyard around his neck.
“My name is Castiel,” He stepped forward, stretching a hand out to Dean, “-but the kids call me Mr.Novak.” Dean met his hand where it was extended, returning the man's strong and sure grip. His striking blue eyes stared deeply into Dean's, so intensely that Dean had to break the contact and swallow.

Summary
Castiel knows three facts about Dean Winchester: he loves coffee, he loves pie, and as heartbreaking as it is, he’s homeless.
When Castiel offers Dean a place to stay on a cold winter night, he never expects it to lead to anything more than a simple act of kindness. But as Dean begins to take refuge in his home, Castiel’s life is turned upside down by the unanswered questions Dean carries—and the growing connection between them.
In the warmth of shared moments and quiet understanding, they both begin to heal from the past, but the future remains uncertain.
