Bruce closed the distance between them before grasping Dick’s shoulder. “Time for you to learn the family business, son.”
Dick shook his head before taking a step back. “No. Get out of my house and stay away from my kids and-”
The sudden slap to his cheek shut him up. Dick felt the countertop digging into his back as his father grasped his chin tightly. Dick swallowed the lump in his throat as Bruce gently pressed a quick kiss to his forehead before adding, “Now, son, you know better. I paid for this house. Your siblings are in my custody. You are here because I allow you to stay here. I allow you to look after my other children because I have far too much to worry about than eight children and two grown adults. I have generously allowed you all to live like this. And now, it’s time to repay my generosity. Tomorrow.”

Summary
As Batman signed for him to add his backup smoke pellets in his belt after forgetting to in a recent patrol, Dick was suddenly hit with the memory of the man scolding him for it. He remembered how Bruce had walked towards him, brushing the dirt off of Dick's face and pinched his cheeks. He recalled sticking his own tongue out at the man and the low — but free, so free — chuckle Bruce let out in response. And Dick reminisced on how warm he felt in its wake.
Large age gaps between friends existed.
It made perfect sense.
Except...it didn't.
Or, how Dick transitioned from seeing Bruce as his mentor to seeing him as his dad.

Mac was just reaching into his inner jacket pocket for his SAK when a hand clamped over his mouth, forcing his head back, and there was a sharp sting against the side of his neck. It was done quickly. Smooth, professional, and almost casual in nature: hand over mouth, needle into neck. A well-rehearsed one-two.
Mac reacted immediately, trying to pry the hand off his mouth with one hand, and driving his other elbow back.
His elbow lacked the room to be effective, and the hand that had plunged the needle into his neck switched to a restraining hold around his chest. The hand over his mouth was rigid, unshifting as Mac scrabbled for a grip to yank it away.
Then the drug took effect.///

That was it.
Less than fifteen minutes and Buck was gone without a trace and her husband was haunted by an incoming ransom demand given by someone using a voice modulator.
Fifteen minutes.
Fifteen minutes from the moment that man stepped out of the elevators to the point that he disappeared from view, taking Buck with him. Four minutes to get to Buck’s door, seven for a struggle and to subdue him, four to exit.
That was all it took.
