Lanceboard usually wasn’t this difficult for Gale. He was an expert at the game, with skills far surpassing Astarion’s. He was too good for Astarion, enough that it just wasn’t fun for either of them unless Gale was handicapped in some way. And, it wasn’t that Astarion was too stupid for the game, but rather Gale was too intelligent. Even blindfolded, his memory never failed him as he remembered each piece’s location and every move made throughout the game. Astarion had proposed another handicap: a distraction during the game. Many distractions during the game, actually. As if Astarion himself wasn’t distraction enough.

Summary
Astarion wants Gale by his side forever. He wants him to be his spawn, his perfect, magically power hungry wizard by his side but doesn't understand why Gale refuses to become the man he'd been before he returned the crown to Mystra. He'd be happier, they'd be happier.
Gale wants to be anything but Astarion's consort, yet agrees for the sake of the poor souls that might be subjected to the vampires whims. After all, he couldn't ever come to love and care for the man Astarion has become. Could he?

With two discerning appetites, a deal to keep each other fed is the one thing that ties Astarion and Gale together. But the proverbial collar slips all too easily around Gale's throat, the lead feels right in Astarion's unchained hands, and both men think they've bested the other in a game neither should be playing.
In any case. As the greats say in lanceboard: there is no shame in losing to a stronger foe.
