Lan Huan is smiling softly, eyebrows raised when Lan Zhan clarifies that they have not discussed marriage in specifics. Not a lie, at least, not quite. Uncle is frustrated with him - surely they did not intend to be unwed romantic partners for all time. Lan Zhan is careful not to say that such a descriptor would be quite preferable to incomparably intimate best friends.
Or: Lan Zhan and Wei Ying are best friends and roommates, about to adopt a toddler together. It helps - and doesn't help - that their families believe they've been romantically together for years.

“What’s the meaning of this?” Wei Wuxian starts playing up his anger. “This is no way to treat a fellow cultivator. I may not be a clan leader, but I’m second in command of the Jiang clan of Yunmeng. Unhand me… or I’m afraid I’ll have to resort to violence.”
He coats his words with as much venom as he can muster.
“I will treat you however I wish,” Lan Wangji’s steady voice says behind him, and oh, that’s a very good proposal; very tempting. But Wei Wuxian isn’t going to let him do that so easily. Where would the fun be in that?

Okay. Okay, great. Lan-laoshi is known for being fair, so of course, he would not go out of his way to make Wei Ying miserable. Wei Ying watches with relief as Lan-laoshi undoes the belt around his waist, and he promises to kneel diligently until Lan-laoshi is done with his work.
And, um, wait-
Why…why is he-
“Why,” Wei Ying’s mouth is suddenly bone dry, and he has to swallow several times before he can speak. “Ah, what’s going on?”
