Summary
Grian never thought he’d get this far in the games. At least, not with Scar by his side.
Scar? By his side? When had that happened? Was it that night, when Grian had pledged his life in a haze of apologies, desperate to atone for that irrevocable mistake? Was it when he had stayed, even after that promised life had been lost and the weight of their shared past became something too heavy to ignore? Or had it been when that heated argument in the desert had turned into a raw, unintended confession of something more than his words ever meant to convey?
Or, Grian and Scar have that final, fateful fight on the mountain.

Scar seemed to tense at the echo of his wish. His face shifted as wonderful splotches of color heated his cheeks. Those green eyes looked askance, nervous laughter filling the air around them. “Yeah, uh, y’know. I’ve never really tried out that holiday tradition. Would be nice to check it off my bucket list.”
“Oh,” Grian said, willing his voice not to break. “Have you… got someone particular in mind?”
Scar just huffed out a little laugh and sent an unreadable glance Grian’s way. "I think I’ll just go for whoever’s nearby when midnight strikes.”

Summary
The day after Scar breaks up with Grian, the dead come back to life. Knowing that venturing out alone is a death sentence, the sudden onset of the apocalypse forces them to stick together despite the tensions between them. In the wreckage of the world, they're forced to survive side-by-side, coming to terms with the fact that—try as they might—there's no one they trust more than each other.
“Go!” Grian shouts as the monster charges, putting his whole force into the blow.
Scar watches, frozen stiff as Grian fights until blood and gore and viscera mark the creature up like a Pollock painting.
“What are you waiting for?!” Grian snaps when he finally notices that Scar is still standing there. He grips his weapon tight and attacks a final time, slamming the zombie down—good and dead—and standing panting over top of it, strained but victorious. He starts rushing from the scene, calling back for Scar over his shoulder. “Run!”
And in a way that’s as familiar to him as breathing, Scar chases after him.

Summary
“No, Grian!” Scar exclaims, reaching for his diamond sword. “You know, I was planning on hitting Team BEST first, give ‘em a real good thrashing. Send a message and all that! Can’t mess with ol’ Scar! Not anymore, no sir!” He takes another step toward Grian.
It’s the instinct of green life, Grian knows, that has him backing away slowly. He takes a few tiny steps backwards.
Scar looks at him, something angry and hurt in his gaze, “But I think you’ll make a good first message to the masses. You were the first to take advantage of me, after all.”
or, grian has won third life. choking on his guilt, he jumps. but he isn’t taken to the afterlife. and he seems to be the only one who knows about third life.
