"She's not a paladin," the girl surmises, squinting as though to telepathically glean a greeting from Krolia.
Keith pets her head, smile growing strained. "That's Krolia, Mizzi. She was with you before I got there, remember?"
"Ooooh," Mizzi hums. "Your work friend, right?"
The low chatter in the cockpit stutters to a halt, and Keith wonders if he's imagining that Krolia's grip tightens on the controls.
Krolia doesn't know how to deal with kids, and Keith does. He really shouldn't be surprised by this fact, but he is.

Summary
The policewoman who'd marched him here releases her vice grip on Keith's shoulder, and he almost considers bolting out of spite, but his legs are still shaking from the walk here. Besides, the grim look on her face doesn't bode any good reaction to him doing something that stupid. She steps up, a sympathetic tilt bleeding into her posture as she takes the other officer's place at the matron's side. "It was confirmed?" she asks her coworker softly, running a hand up and down the matron's back as she does, like Keith does when he wants one of the younger kids to stop crying about their parents leaving them when it's late enough that he actually feels like sleeping.
The man nods with a grimace. "The EMTs cleared out a while ago with the body so it wouldn't scare the other kids."
The matron chokes out another sob at that, and the lady opens her mouth to say something comforting again. Keith doesn't hear it. His brain is screeching to a halt. Body? What do they mean, body?
