“What time do you get off?”
Bucky freezes. Even if the diner were jam-packed with customers, Bucky wouldn’t need to look back to know who that voice belongs to.
But he does turn around; he does seek the source. What he finds is Steve staring back at him with more of that dark heat than Bucky’s ever seen before.
“Six,” he replies, though the answer comes out breathless. “I finish here at six. Why?”

Steve is everything dark and mysterious, while Bucky is bored out of his mind. The fourth time Steve stops into the diner where Bucky passes his days pouring coffee, Bucky decides to take a leap. He just hopes he likes where he lands.

“This isn’t the kind of story I usually read.”
Bucky Barnes, beta, is a high-strung workaholic in the publishing industry. When he’s suddenly forced out onto vacation by his boss, much to his chagrin, he gets in the car and heads north out of Brooklyn for a month-long stay at a vacation rental on Maine’s mid-coast. His host—a mysterious omega named Steve Rogers—is an idle and lonely romance author with a shelf full of unsubmitted manuscripts and a pocket full of secrets he’s finally ready to share.
“I know,” Steve calls back. All around them, the salty sea air rushes off the ocean, tangling itself with gold and crimson leaves in the surrounding tree line. “That’s why I wrote it.”

“How are you feeling now?”
The tone in Bucky’s voice makes Steve open his bleary eyes, and he smiles up into a face he knows far better than his own and grins. “I feel grounded. Whole. Home.”
The returning grin makes his heart soar, and Bucky leans forward to kiss him, the fresh mint on his tongue means he’s already brushed his teeth, and Steve knows he spaced out after his orgasm to have missed Bucky leaving the bed.
“Love you,” he whispers as Bucky moves back to snuggle down next to him, to pull Steve in tight, curling around his back—just the way Steve likes to be held.
“‘Til the end of the line, right?”
“And beyond,” Steve replies softly and starts to fall into a safe, deep sleep, wrapped up in Bucky’s arms, warm and content, knowing that no matter what happens next—even an alien war, Thanos, whatever—nothing could keep them apart.

“Looks like that could brew into rain tonight,” Bucky muses. “I think I picked out the lady on the radio saying something about lightning, at least.”
Steve finishes the last plate and hands it to Bucky before turning off the sink. He wipes his wet hands on the kitchen rag over his shoulder, following the direction of Bucky’s gaze out the window.
“Would be kinda ominous if it weren’t for the sun lookin’ so pretty out there on the water.” Steve runs the rag over the edge of the countertop, cleaning up stray splashes from the sink. “Wanna go sit outside and watch it roll in?”

Bucky doesn’t know why he does that. He doesn’t know why he always feels the impulse to make that correction—‘our baby’—because he knows it isn’t to remind Steve. Steve knows. Steve likes it very, very much.
Bucky thinks he does it to remind himself that he can be good. He has killed sixty-eight men, fourteen women, and one child. He remembers doing it. He remembers all of them.
But Steve is good. Steve is good, and Bucky is carrying Steve’s child.
That means that maybe a part of Bucky is good, too.

James is straddling him. Sitting firmly on his hips, arms braced on either side of him, staring down with heavy eyes.
Steve’s breath hitches, chest tightening under the sudden weight. His hands twitch at his sides, instinct urging him to push James off, but he doesn’t move. He can’t. Not with James looking at him like that.
“James,” Steve says, his voice low and warning, though it comes out softer than he intends.
James tilts his head, smirking. “Relax. You should be used to this by now. Don’t you and your Bucky do this all the time?”

There's nothing he can do as their bond grows stronger and he actually starts to have feelings for the alpha, expect keep his secrets close to his chest. If Steve ever found out what he was hiding the fake little fantasy they've built together will all come crashing down.
