"From his vantage point on the museum steps, Buck can see Eddie for a little longer than Eddie can see him, and he watches as Eddie scans the crowd. Buck’s heart flutters in his chest, feeling like it's going to explode. He can still go home, he thinks, he can still leave. If he turns around right now, Buck can go home before Eddie even knows he was there. He can pack up his locker at work and leave, just like he did in Pennsylvania and South America. "
After a not-quite-unexpected kiss, Buck and Eddie finally begin their journey as more than friends. However, as the pair get to know each other in a new way, Buck must finally come to terms with and heal from the past he has worked so hard to bury.

Summary
Evan Buckley grew up with one understanding; he wasn’t of value unless he was hurt. That belief fueled all his actions, and turned him into the reckless firefighter he is today. But it had also been festering into something more, turning into this ugly monster deep inside him.
When that belief system begins to feed Bucks low self esteem, and lead to mental health issues he is not equipped to deal with, he doesn’t know what to do. But he’s definitely not going to tell anyone.
He can’t be another thing for people to worry about.
But the team begins to suspect anyways, despite how hard he tried to keep them away. And Buck has no clue how to handle it when they begin to break down the walls he worked so hard to put up.
