Kaito's Fake Girlfriend

And His Very Real Actual Boyfriend

"I can't believe Kaito has a girlfriend and doesn't introduce her to Aoko."

Kaito nearly dropped his phone, turning to glare at his best friend. She stood right behind him, glancing at his phone. Thankfully enough, he had saved tantei-kun's number under a fake name – Arthur Josephine. So for all Aoko knew, he was texting some girl. Which, of course, had quickly led to the assumption that he was texting a girlfriend. And... who was Kaito to deny that?

It wasn't even all that far from the truth. He'd had growing feelings for the brilliant mind of his Great Detective for a while now. Longer than he cared to admit. Stealing his phone and starting to text him had just been the tipping point. Now, he really was gone. Conversations! Real actual conversations, not about heists or terrorists or anything other 'work' related.

"I can't believe he has such bad taste."

Kaito narrowed his eyes at Akako, who stood leisurely next to Aoko, a judgmental look on her face. Of course she had opinions. She always did. Especially about Kaito's love-life, since her own opinion was that Kaito should date her. Which. No.

"Why do you say that?" Aoko asked, curiosity piqued. "Do you know her?"

"Not personally," a mean glint in Akako's eyes. "But I think I have a good idea."

"You have so many ideas. None of them are good," countered Kaito dryly.

Every day, Kaito would be texting with tantei-kun. A good morning text, a good night text, an update on how the day was going, just... just talking. Though his favorite were the after heist texts, they'd talk for hours after a heist, how tantei-kun had figured it all out, how easy it was to trick Nakamori-keibu, how funny Mouri had been. It had reached a point where the first thing Kaito wanted to do when something happened in his life – good or bad alike, whether he was feeling down and lonely in the big house all alone, or he was happy because he'd pulled a good prank – the first one he wanted to tell was his Great Detective.

"Are you ever going to introduce us?" Aoko asked. "As your best friend... I thought meet her."

"Uh. In... In due time. Probably. Maybe," Kaito laughed sheepishly, earning a skeptical look from Aoko. "You, uh, you could say that we haven't really met in person yet."

Aoko looked confused. "What does that mean?"

"It means we're just... texting. We haven't gotten to meet yet. So..."

"How very... modern of you," Akako sounded dry and unimpressed as she regarded him. "Sure there are no other reasons at all, mh?"

Oh, mocking him now? Just because his beloved was stuck in a grade schooler's body and, well, technically, also the whole problem with the detective and thief. But Kaito was sure they could put that aside once Kudou Shinichi was back. They'd... They would make it work. Kaito knew that his own feelings were strong enough to get past it. And though he didn't entirely know about tantei-kun's feelings, their conversations and the question – the question to meet, it sounded like a date.

"Whoever this... Arthur-san is, I am sure I would like to meet her," Hakuba chimed in, eyes narrowed. "I have so much I would love to share with her."

"I can assure you, nothing that would be a surprise at all," countered Kaito cheekily.

Oh, this was going to drive Hakuba absolutely mad. Knowing that Kaito's 'girlfriend' knew exactly that he was KID and would still be interested in him. Heh. The blonde was in for a surprise once he realized the great Kudou Shinichi, a fellow teen detective, was Kaito's chosen one. Kaito wasn't saying that was the only reason he wanted to date Shinichi, but it was a certain perk.

Hey? Are you okay, tantei-kun? Kaito frowned worried even as he hit sent.

Above it, three other texts from him, that had gone unanswered. It was like tantei-kun had fallen off the face of the Earth. Sure, he had warned Kaito that he may not be available for a few days, but that had literally been the last text! Kaito's questions about how long, why, where to, they had all gone as unanswered as this latest one. So, color him concerned.

Was he at some retreat, some dangerous case? What is something had happened to him? Kaito groaned and rolled over, resting his phone on his chest. It was silly, how attached he'd gotten to this. Two days without texting Shinichi and Kaito was growing antsy, and also bored.

The buzzing of his phone startled him so much more with it against his chest. When he turned it over, he saw that he had a notification – from Arthur Josephine. When he opened the chat, he actually dropped his phone in surprise. A picture. A photo. Of Kudou Shinichi, a weak smile on his face. Wait. Hold on. Was that why he hadn't texted, because he'd... but...

Without even thinking about it, Kaito dialed the number. They'd never talked before, only ever texted. Still, his detective picked up very quickly.

"You could have told me!" Kaito's voice was a bit squeaky. "Is this temporary, or... or..."

"Hello to you too, sneak thief," mmmmh, Shinichi's voice, Shinichi's real, actual voice. "It's hopefully permanent, though we don't know just yet. We didn't even know if it'd actually work for good. That's why I didn't... tell you. I didn't want to get your hopes up in case it didn't work."

"Oh," that was actually considerate of him. "So... What does that... mean?"

"I don't know," Shinichi sounded... nervous? "What would you want it to mean?"

That was... That was a big question. Swallowing hard, Kaito considered his options. They had never actually talked about it. Sure, tantei-kun had texted him once, months ago, asking if they would meet face to face after he got his body back. But was that going to be a... friendly meeting? Or had that been meant as a date? Kaito had never asked for clarification and tantei-kun never offered one either. So, this was it, wasn't it? The big conversation they'd avoided so far.

"You know my friends think that I'm texting a secret girlfriend," Kaito offered.

"Yours too, huh?" Shinichi chuckled. "Ran was..."

When he just trailed off, Kaito felt like pushing. "Yeah?"

"Ran was the one who made me realize I might... like you..." Kaito could hear the blush on Shinichi's cheeks. "Because she pointed out how it looked like Conan had his first crush, the way I was looking at my phone when texting you..."

Okay, so Shinichi said it first then, huh? Kaito's heart was racing in his throat and he nearly felt like he would be unable to reply. Kudou Shinichi, his Great Detective, had a crush on him. Damn.

"Heh, so I'm the better detective then? Since I figured it out all on my own, that I like you."

"Really," Shinichi's voice was flat. "You have to tease me even when you confess."

"You know my charming personality, it's what you lo—ove about me," Kaito grinned, broad and teasing. "I... Would you like to go on a date, with me?"

"My evil scientist-doctor is glaring at me so... At the earliest in a week. Ouch. Ten days."

"Ten days sound good. Give me all the time to plan the perfect first date, tantei-kun."

"You... You should not call me that, though, sneak thief."

"Oh, don't worry about that, Shin-chan," Kaito grinned impishly. "But you definitely shouldn't refer to me as sneak thief, unless this is a big ruse to get me arrested."

"Then tell me what else I'm supposed to call you."

"I'll tell you when I see you, Great Detective. Now rest, before your evil scientist-doctor comes back to haunt me for keeping her patient engaged."

"Right, right. Will be safer for the both of us. I... am... looking forward to it, sneak thief."

Kaito was grinning broader than he ever had in his life. "So am I!"

/break\

They'd texted, afterward. But neither brought their date up again, not until the day before, when Kaito texted Shinichi the exact time and location he wanted to meet. At precisely noon, in front of the clock tower. The very first time they met, even though they didn't meet. Only in the aftermath had Kaito found out that some Kudou Shinichi had been on that helicopter that night. And only much, much later had he met Conan and learned of his secret.

There he sat, on a bench in front of the clock tower, looking up at it. Watching the hands move. Waiting for Shinichi. The grin on Kaito's lips was genuine, soft and filled with all the affection he had for Shinichi, as he pushed himself into Shinichi's line of sight.

"Hello, Great Detective," Kaito's voice was but a whisper, as though he tried not to break the moment. "It's... a pleasure to finally meet you. I'm Kuroba Kaito."

He produced a blue rose out of thin air, with a pink puff of smoke, and presented it to the detective. Shinichi's eyes darted to it only briefly before they returned their inspection of Kaito. Checking to see if it was a disguise. Noting all the obvious similarities in their features – what had allowed Kaito to pass for Shinichi in the past – but also all the way they differed.

"So that's what you look like beneath all your masks."

Kaito wondered if Shinichi knew just how true this statement was. He'd never laid more bare before than he did right now. Presenting his real face and real name to a detective. Presenting his heart to the person he loved. There were no masks, no poker-face. There was only Kaito, showing honesty and sincerity in a manner that went against his very nature as a thief and showman.

"Not what you were expecting?" Kaito joked, trying to mask his nervousness after all.

"Well, certainly not what anyone would expect 'Tsukino Guinevere' to look like," countered Shinichi, a small smile on his lips as he accepted the rose. "Well then, Kuroba-kun, what have you planned for me? This is the first time I was allowed out of my warden's sight."

"I thought we'd start with dinner," Kaito smiled back at him, falling in step with Shinichi as they walked. "I wanted to take you to a museum, but I thought you might mistake it for work."

Shinichi huffed out a laugh and elbowed him. Gentle. Teasing. Kaito's heart fluttered loudly.

"I do admit it sounds like an interesting date to go to a museum with Kaitou KID and have him tell me all the ways he'd break in and all the security he can spot," Shinichi mused. "But maybe not a first date, yes. Perhaps we'll save that for the fifth date."

Fifth date, huh? That sounded good. Kaito's smile brightened.

~*~ The End ~*~

Notes:

Thiiis is the... last one. Technically not even from the poll, because this one hadn't made the cut. But it's one where I really wanted to write a sequel for. So here it is. But yeah, this is going to be the last Magic Monday. It's been well over a year of weekly fics, which is quite honestly much longer than I had anticipated for this to last. But I think I really did cover everything at this point and I just don't have the time these days to upload trice a week. Who knows, if I find more inspiration and time, I might bring this format back, but I'm afraid this is it for now. Thank you all for reading and even more for commenting; the great, positive response in my comment sections is what has kept this going for as long as it did! <3
