Aventurine doesn't grieve, but it would be remiss of him to pretend he doesn't feel a sharp pang in his chest every time he pulls up a certain phone contact and his messages remain unanswered.

(or; Ratio hasn't contacted Aventurine since Penacony. Aventurine... copes.)

if we die at the same time, does it still scare you?

Perhaps it was his damned luck, Aventurine thought to himself. And he should’ve known better, that this kind of love — the type that comforted him, benefitted him — could never have found him without him needing to pay some kind of price in return.

Mother Goddess, he prayed silently, a warm tear tracing the side of his face. Please let this be real, because I don’t think my heart can handle this being a dream.

    Summary

The first time they meet, Aventurine sees the mark before he sees Ratio’s face. Eighteen elegant words scrawled in bold, black ink tracing the curve of Ratio's exposed deltoid like an invitation. Who is Aventurine to not take the obvious bait?

“‘Does the conscious act of reading another's soulmark constitute as a defiance of fate or alignment with it?’” he reads aloud, lips twitching into a half-smile. “How befitting of a renowned scholar such as yourself. It’s very… unique.”

Whatever Aventurine said seems to pass some unspoken test, because Ratio reaches up and removes his headpiece. "A paradox, self-contained and self-contradictory. One worth contemplation, wouldn’t you agree?" Ratio’s eyes, a brilliant shade of rusty gold, catch the light as he inclines his elegant head and extends his hand. "I am Veritas Ratio."

“Aventurine of the Stratagems,” Aventurine answers, flashing a polished, professional smile as their hands clasp in a firm shake. “A pleasure to meet your acquaintance.”

    Or:

In perhaps the greatest defiance of fate, Aventurine is given choice.

    Summary

“… Androids are now matching, maybe even surpassing human intelligence!”

Since Sunday had become the mayor of a nearby city, it became the talk of the town: ‘the rise of androids’. They're cold, inhumane and unpredictable: an emerging threat, as stated by Sunday. When one day Aventurine, a perfectly inconspicuous ‘android’, is making his way to an early morning IPC meeting, he witnesses an unprecedented incident. By coincidence or maybe by destiny, Veritas Ratio, a prominent researcher and professor within the Intelligentsia Guild, beholds the same scene. Though differently motivated, a silent understanding passes between them: these anti-android sentiments, spurred on by Sunday, are escalating beyond reason. And so, an unexpected shared mission commences. Can the combined determination of a brilliant scholar and a senior manager alter the fate of a complete species?

    Summary

Why was he so insistent on understanding something so inherently inscrutable? Why did he push when Aventurine pulled? Why were they so flawed, so perfect together despite it all?

Jokingly, Aventurine considered the idea that there was simply no one else who could keep up with his… eccentricities. But that fondness only lasted for so long.

He needed to distract Ratio. Quickly.

Aventurine can only keep his secrets from Ratio for so long.

    Summary

Penacony storyline, with the addition of everything that happened between Ratio and Aventurine which we weren't told. Canon-compliant.

"Of course out of all people, you had to have a big dick. But that doesn't count since it's proportional."
Ratio raised an eyebrow at that, "Size isn't proportional with your height nor weight."
Aventurine smirked before groaning, and Ratio felt like he walked right into a trap. "I am not talking about height nor weight, doctor. I am simply saying that it's most of the time proportional to your personality."
Aventurine laughed out loud at Ratio's stare, feeling proud of the doctor's dumbfounded expression. Ratio sighed in defeat, "Well done gambler, ten points. However, if I were you, I would think twice about biting the hand that fingers feeds you."

"KV-0506A, do you copy?" Ratio's voice cuts through the silence when Aventurine doesn't respond.

Aventurine's words catch in his throat. He exhales slowly, anchoring himself with the pain radiating from his ribs.

"VP-0841R," he murmurs, collapsing onto the floor and covering his eyes with his uninjured arm to shield them from the flashing lights. "I copy."

Despite everything, a faint smile tugs at the corners of his lips.

Ratio is here. He's in good hands.

    Summary

Three sharp knocks punctuate the pitter-patter of the rain outside. Strange. Ratio isn’t expecting any deliveries or guests at this hour. He peers through the peephole and freezes.

Three long years after his disappearance in Penacony, Aventurine stands at Ratio’s doorstep with a casual, lopsided grin.

    Unthinkable. Unbelievable. Unimaginable.

Numb fingers open the door before caution can intervene. Aventurine, the eternal outlier, opens his mouth.

“Schrödinger looked in the box; I live.”

Without fail, Ratio finds him after every project, at every bar and casino. He drags Aventurine back to his hotel or penthouse, plying him with water and food until Aventurine is almost eating three meals a day.

Each night, Aventurine is lulled to sleep by Ratio’s irritated scolding, and every morning, he wakes to a tall glass of water and hangover pills on his nightstand, with breakfast pre-made and waiting in the fridge.

One night, after Ratio leaves, Aventurine coughs. It must be allergies.

    “My dear doctor—”

Aventurine says this with the gravitas of an opera villain, waving his hands for emphasis as he points directly at Ratio.

“—you’re going to betray me to The Family.”

When Aventurine and Dr Veritas Ratio find themselves at the centre of the mystery of Penacony, they discover that their personal goals, and rising mutual attraction, aren't all that dissimilar. (Alternatively, Aventurine and Dr. Ratio fight, fuck, and figure out what they mean to each other against the backdrop of the Penacony storyline. 2.1 spoilers.)

Aventurine wants to laugh because everything that reminds him of Ratio is so bitter, just like him, and Aeons, what a horrible person he is to hate a man like Veritas Ratio when he was—is and will ever be, really—the best damn person in Aventurine’s life.

The question that comes after is in the shape of a pistol with one bullet in its revolver. Doctor spins the cylinder carefully and stops. "Do you remember me?"

How can I not remember you? He laughs bitterly inside his head. You just made me realize how dumb I was before for not having the will and wit to hold on to the people I care about. And how I am now smart enough to come out alive.
