Alas, the living are only human, feeble to the cosmos' delicacies. Ergo, what this echo witnesses makes it question if the will it encompasses is worth being fulfilled.

Summary
No longer sure of what's real and what's not, whether she's truly dead, and whether the conversations she has really occur or are figments of her guilty conscience, Maria confronts her past and the secret of the fishing hamlet she still guards with her life. Elsewhere, Gehrman contemplates his role in the fishing hamlet massacre, too. In conversation with the doll, unclear if she is real or merely a vision, he knows the hunter aims to unravel the secret and kill Maria once and for all, which only dredges up memories of his sin and the question of if he will ever or even should be set free. If Maria even will.
When the hunter confronts Maria for the last time, she knows her imminent fate has caught up with her. She watches her body fight, the last bastion between the hunter and her terrible secret lying unconcealed, but her spirit knows what must be done.

Summary
Maria has been dead for decades, if not centuries, trapped within a nightmare of her own making. But even perishing there will not allow her to rest, as she soon finds herself bound to the Hunter's Dream and, inexplicably, very much alive. Yharnam is much changed from the city she once knew, yet delving into its mysteries is the best chance she has of learning what has happened to her and why.
Provided, of course, that she's willing to join the Hunt one last time.
Perhaps, this time, she can do some good.

Though Maria has sparred with the First Hunter a great many times since joining the Hunt herself, she has never once defeated him. Perhaps today will be different. She could die happy if she were to win against him even once.
