The first time Hannibal Lecter saw Will Graham was in the middle of spring, April 3rd, 1978. Hannibal remembered seeing Matron usher another kid inside the orphanage: unruly curls sticking out from his head, cheeks round, an innocent facade. Hannibal thought he’d be just like the other kids—shallow, boring, simple. Nothing more than another story of parents abandoning a child they found annoying and unwanted.
But no. How mistaken he had been.

Post-fall, Will finds himself recovering in an unfamiliar, new home. He falls into a deep depression and can't bring himself to get out of bed or do anything. Meanwhile, Hannibal is caring but impatient to touch Will. One day Will finds himself drugged and taken advantage of, and with shock, turns mute.
The months pass and Will comes to surrender to Hannibal's whims.
And then one day he starts to feel better and unexpectedly finds that he wants to return to normal life again, with Hannibal.

Will looks down from the balcony, face still swollen and healing. My palm tingles, remembering the weight of his injured cheek within it. I touch my fingers to my mouth, to lips that kissed him for the first and last time, and he touches his, too. Then he smiles at me, crooked and beautiful, and goes back inside.
“Scarface always did seem a drifter to me. What’d you say his name was?”
"Will." It’s the first time Hannibal’s said his name outside of bedroom walls in a decade.

The thing is, Hannibal doesn't have a soulmark; so of course the good doctor just has to hunt whoever has Will's. After a lot of misunderstanding, (Will thinks Alana and Hannibal are going out and Hannibal thinks he is doesn't have a soulmate) Hannibal finds out Will is actually mute and on his wrist is Hannibal's very specific order. :3
