One night, it all changes.
Trapped in another dream, you’re forced to watch yourself trudge slowly down a ruined street you vaguely recognize, littered with wet vines and dead cars and broken streetlamps like every other. Unremarkable minutes pass until, without warning, you stumble and fall as if you tripped over something, and as you hit the ground, you hear a pitiful, gnarled cry that you aren't even sure is human. It sends a shiver down your spine.
As you slowly pick yourself up on weak, stuttering arms, you freeze. A puddle on the sodden road, disturbed by your fall, evens out, and you see your face.

Summary
It is November, 1989. The Party is now in college. Mike, Dustin, and Lucas are attending Purdue University - while Will is an art student at the Pratt Institute in New York. Meanwhile, back in Hawkins, Eleven, Max, Joyce, Hopper, Steve, Nancy, Jonathan, and Robin are all trying to live normal lives the best they know how. Max and Eleven both have jobs at Family Video. Joyce, Hopper, and Murray, are Private Detectives who assist Chief Powell and the Hawkins P.D. Steve and Robin are now police officers with Hawkins P.D. and primarily serve as traffic cops until they respond to a disturbing call. Finally, Jonathan–now a local photographer–and Nancy, reporter at The Hawkins Post will have to overcome their break-up two years prior and work together to solve an unearthed mystery. These characters and their respective plots will come together when our college kids come home for Thanksgiving break. What they thought was a time for thanks and turkey, will become an amalgam of an unexpected guest showing up in Hawkins, a mysterious string of disappearances and (eventual) deaths, unhinged governmental forces, and the familiar threat of the Upside Down.

Steve wasn't happy to be left alone in an unfamiliar house amiss the annual Cleanse. But as long as Steve stayed inside the fortified security system he’d be safe.
But when events don't go to plan, Steve is gifted a hard choice - staying safe all the while keeping his eyes closed to the terrible events happening outside or saving complete strangers at the cost of opening his doors, which counter-promised his own safety and meant disobeying his parents.
Steve learns an awful lesson that day. It wasn’t just the monsters that he had to worry about or his displeased parents.
No, it was humans that turned out to be much worse than the nightmarish creatures roaming the streets. Will Steve survive the night? Will the handful of strangers? How far would Steve go to make sure that he and those he comes to care for survive?

He doesn't bother holding the child when he first meets it. It's small, weak and squalling; whatever affection he's meant to be feeling is more like how he feels about Clau's current boyfriend. It's nothing to write home about.
His sister is a determined to celebrate though, so he deigns to take a traditional picture at her request.
They still leave the hospital empty handed- the picture goes up on the mantelpiece to be ignored for nearly a decade. -
