Some days the grief settled on him so hard, he couldn't force himself into the day, resigned to wither to nothing where he lay. Others, he was able to lock it all back in its cage, a clawing, snarling creature tamed only by his desire to not fall victim to it again. Today though, he let the memories burn just enough to remind him how he'd gotten here, what he'd survived to have the opportunity to still be able to remember, and he was grateful.

"Stede can't believe he's identifying with Izzy, who is attempting to disappear into the shadows. The man seems to sense this uneasy camaraderie, and, in a rare feat, actually glances over at Stede and grimaces. It's not a Fuck You Stede Bonnet grimace, it's more of a Can You Believe This Shit sort of thing.
Stede, for his part, leans in and whispers, "Is it always like this?"
Izzy nods, grimly, "Bloody pissing contest every time."
Or, four pirates walk into a bar.
Sam Bellamy brings out the worst in Edward Teach, and vice versa. Izzy has no idea he's in the middle of the world's ugliest love triangle. It isn't even a triangle. Sam doesn't love him, and he doesn't love Sam. Izzy loves Ed, and Ed loves him, but that's not a good thing. Stede has only the barest idea of what's going on, but he's joining the triangle anyway.
They talk it out, with varying degrees of success."

Ed knows he can simply do as he’s told and he’ll get exactly what he needs. But then it’ll be over, and the boredom will start creeping back in again. Or he can continue being a bastard. And Stede will definitely make him pay for being disobedient, but he’ll have something to focus on for just a little while longer.
“Make me.”
Stede ceases his attack on Ed’s neck. “Say that again?” His voice has already dropped to that lower, more authoritative register that goes straight to Ed’s dick every time.
Yeah, he made the right decision.
