Summary
Rui feels something gently caressing his cheek. The touch is as light as a feather and as smooth as can be. He melts into the touch, gently scrunching his face up and shifting around a bit before trying to doze off again. The calming patterns traced onto his cheek almost lull him back, before it suddenly stops, and his long strand of cyan hair is tucked behind his ear.
Rui stirs and scrunches his face once more, before opening his mouth wide and letting out a quiet yawn, he brings the soft plush blanket over his mouth and leans forward, forehead resting against something warm— the same warmth from earlier. He smiles contentedly, nudging himself as close as he can, before throwing his arms out and holding the warmth within his grasp.
There’s a breathy chuckle, before the hand returns and combs its fingers through his messy, sleep rustled hair.
“Rui,” a soft voice speaks, in that way that makes Rui weak.

“you can’t possibly cat nap all day!” tsukasa responds, tone lilting towards joking as he steps out of the way. the cooling sensation of his fan’s winds reuniting with rui’s body again as he stretches into it, before getting into a more comfortable position to make space for tsukasa. “this is the perfect weather to go out.”
“i don’t cat nap,” rui mumbles, eyes opening just enough to squint at tsukasa. as if he can sense his protest at the accusation, tsukasa’s amusement only grows in response, appearing as an upwards tick to one side of his mouth. rui blinks, closing his eyes again. “just avoiding the heat outside by napping.”
“so, making this a cat nap,” tsukasa reaffirms, laughing when rui makes a disgruntled noise. “alright rui, you’re taking a very normal, very unrelated-to-cats rest.”

“..what would you do without me?” tsukasa asks, not bothering to disguise the unimpressed tone of his voice. from rui’s low hums after, he hadn’t really processed his words at all.
“i’m glad you came,” rui does reply instead, his voice sounding so fragile it has tsukasa’s heart clenching in his chest. despite having to come to his house at this ridiculous hour, tsukasa can't even be angry at his partner. turning away before rui can catch a glimpse of his expression, he retrieves a blanket and lays it over him to avoid any embarrassment.
“i hope you're reflecting on your mistakes,” tsukasa reprimands, but he can't bring himself to put any heat into it. “you need to take better care of yourself, you know.”
rui smiles softly at that, pressing into tsukasa’s touch. “but it’s better when tsukasa-kun does it.”

“hey! i know you’re still sleeping! you’d better wake up right this instant!” tsukasa grits his teeth as he drops his backpack to the floor, getting right down to business. rui mumbles another incoherent sentence, perhaps a feeble protest, so tsukasa, exasperated, sinks down to the floor to hear what exactly he has to say.
“i’ve missed you,” is the only chilling sentence tsukasa manages to make out.
he immediately snaps his head up with a pair of widened eyes at what sounded like rui stuck in a dream, blinking furiously as he stands back up. he staggers backwards, holding onto a table for support.
“come back,” he whispers again, his sleepy expression magically softer.

no longer will he hear that remark anymore. like a normal individual, he will just ask what is for breakfast and possibly a kiss. he wouldn’t succumb to these out of the blue, unexpected cat accusations from tsukasa, or nene, or emu.
yet as soon as he clambers into the kitchen and he sees tsukasa, his previous thoughts becomes foggy.
the apron-adorning chef has his back turned, busy preparing what smells lile pancakes for the both of them. under the apron, he’s wearing a sweater, one of rui’s, with its sleeves pushed remarkably far back. the longer sleeves threaten to spill under the sunlight from how bunched up they are, and rui has forgotten how to form a coherent thought.
fine, maybe he is like a cat, as much as tsukasa pleases.

his smile reaches rui’s eyes and only grows bigger as they make eye contact with each other, until his eyes flicker downward. his hair had grown.
or rather, tsukasa too, had finally realised how long it had gotten over the course of a few months. his hair had made its way to rui’s shoulders, purple strands peeking out of the sides of his neck as if to make themselves known. tsukasa internally repeats to himself over and over again that hair is just hair.
he raises a hand to show the plastic bags on his wrists, watching them crinkle before he turns to look at rui again. more of his longer hair is revealed as he tilts his head to get a better look.
tsukasa’s mouth goes dry.

"i thought you were asleep,” tsukasa remarks when he catches rui staring, his alarmed voice melting into something more tender seconds in, something softer. in truth, he’s suddenly self-conscious of how rui knows him; of how he knows the every nook and cranny of his affections. rui knows to look for the embarrassed tinge of red over his cheeks, despite the darkness of his room.
the know-it-all hums, the tune soft from sleep, with his head a comforting weight against tsukasa. tsukasa sincerely hopes he can’t hear how loud his heart is already pounding.
“you stare too much,” tsukasa whispers, growing embarrassed. “close your eyes.”

“close your eyes,” tsukasa suddenly whispers into the dark, his eyes still closed, and rui’s heart stutters to a stop in his chest.
“my eyes..?” rui echoes, barely breathing. it does little to hide the way his voice wavers. “why do you—”
“you stare too much,” he answers before he can even finish his question.
then, rather abruptly, a hand reaches forward, and tsukasa’s fingers intertwine with rui’s.
their fingers slot together like puzzle pieces. rui’s hand is slightly larger, the both of them realise as they join hands. tsukasa sinks into rui’s hand from the top of his own, locking his fingers as he takes in a deep breath, and rui notices. he mirrors him, chest rising on an anxious inhale — and secures his own fingers too.

when a sleepy rui irreparably breaks the heater, tsukasa takes matters onto his own hands for the night.

he raises the phone to take a look, and sees an incoming call from rui’s mother.
tsukasa, now looking lost, stares back and forth between the screen and a peacefully sleeping rui resting on his table, now covered haphazardly with a blanket and face clear of any worries. he makes the split decision to answer the phone after just two more rings, bringing it up carefully to his ear and answering as softly as he can, “hello! rui is unavailable right now.”
“tenma-kun?” rui’s mother asks in a melodious voice at the other end of the line, the smoothness of it familiar, one alike to her son’s. “i see, is rui still with you? it’s getting rather late..”
