Summary
[Sokka is five when the first mark appears.
It writes itself in a deep red like a wound, as if someone had carved the word “nonbender” in a messy font across the knuckles of his left hand, as if it was handwritten with a knife.
When he asks his mother, as she applies salve on Sokka’s knuckles, she sighs deeply and says nothing for a few moments.
“Sometimes, spirits don’t make much sense.”
Sokka has yet to turn thirteen when he wakes up screaming in pain, about ten soulmarks all over each other between his left shoulder and his ear, red and vivid like burning flesh. Among the few words that are somehow possible to read out of the disastrous scribbling, “disrespectful” and “coward” and “burned” and “sorry sorry sorry” are the ones that stand out the most to Sokka. He thinks, at the tender age of twelve, whoever did this to his soulmate will be sorry too, one day.
A month after Hakoda leaves him with the job of the protector at the age of thirteen, Sokka realizes, with a bitter taste in his mouth, that he’s got more soulmarks than his entire village combined.]
Or, to have a soulmark is to carry the vilest things that your soulmate believes about themselves on your skin.

It's clear that the Firelord and Firelady aren't going down anytime soon.
That doesn't mean they can't hit close to home, though.
Besides, Ambassador Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe is an easy target anyway.

each chapter has a different letter interspersed. zukka and mailee, but zuko and mai are official since they had to have Izumi (elementary-ish aged). sokka and suki are off with some kyoshi warriors investigating some rebels when they find out that they are coming for sokka, so they fake his death to buy some time. sokka sends a letter to aang and katara but it arrives after they leave so everyone’s grief is terrifyingly real. zuko secretively joins citizens in the city during a vigil. hakoda hears the news and is literally sick with grief. sokka and suki return, impressed by everyone’s acting, and sokka runs around the palace looking for his people. he finds aang and katara first: she never accepted his death and aang has to be the one to realize he is real. sokka finally learns that no one knew his death was fake, so he hurries to find zuko and izumi. he finds her first, but she also had firmly believed he would come back. she hasn’t seen zuko in a month. sokka eventually finds zuko holed up in not their room, and zuko thinks he is hallucinating, but sokka finally convinced zuko that he is real. ends with a beautiful cuddle pile of everyone who loves sokka or loves someone (like Izumi) that loves sokka

the boys are properly in love and married with baby Izumi. sokka runs into a lone fake kyoshi warrior on a pier late at night after a party. he kills the assassin, takes her armor, and drops the body in the bay, before another assassin catches up with him and sokka hands over his space sword and betrothal necklace as proof (they are put in a box in his hotel room and eventually sent to zuko). Zuko immediately goes to the town to investigate with Katara, and she finds a single Kyoshi warrior fan. Sokka is hiding with the rebel group, trying to learn their plan. they travel to the capital and get into the palace via a noodle shop. the main group heads to the throne room, and run into suki on the way, who sokka “kills” but actually warns to get everyone to head to the throne room. he then follows the main leader guy to Izumis room, where the 2 of them have a three way fight with zuko. zuko recognizes sokka while trying to choke out his husbands murderer. they take out the assassin and have some sweet cuddles with Izumi before going to the throne room to see that suki and katara and taken care of the rest of the group. toph and aang show up later and sokka has to clear up the confusion for them and toddler bumi

Summary
What Zuko wasn’t prepared for was something else, something far more animalistic. Every time he saw that necklace, he felt something clawing at the pit of his stomach: a sensation that was somewhere between “protective” and “possessive.” Although logically he knew it wasn’t true, the thought always appeared before Zuko could stop it: Sokka belongs to me.
Or, Azula kidnaps Sokka. That doesn't sit very well with Zuko or Katara.

Summary
When Azula is nine, she becomes an only child. She hears the Fire Lord call for Zuko's life, and in the morning, her mother and brother are gone. Azula may be young, but she isn't naive. She knows what happened to them.
Which makes it all the more surprising when Azula tracks the Avatar down and fights his group of peasant friends, only to find herself staring into an eerily familiar face.
